Alan Catterall

A man who was reportedly 'cooked alive' inside a giant oven, had his own skin melted on to the door, despite his desperate screams for help echoing through a factory.

Alan Catterall died while working at Pyranha Mouldings, a kayak-making factory located in Cheshire. His task for the day had been to clean plastic off the sides of the massive oven. Tragically, his co-worker Mark Francis, oblivious to Alan's presence inside the oven, switched it on. As the temperature inside the oven began to rise, Alan made frantic attempts to escape.

Alan resorted to banging on the walls of the oven with a crowbar, hoping to attract someone's attention. However, the heat soon became unbearable. "The walls of the oven would have glowed red-hot and before long the crowbar he was using to try to open the door must have become so hot he couldn't have held it," podcaster Mr Ballen recounted.

Painting a horrifying picture, he added: "The ground as well would have been red hot and his shoes would have begun to melt and then the air temperature inside would have gotten so unbelievably hot he couldn't have breathed."

Despite the rising temperatures inside the oven, workers elsewhere in the noisy factory remained unaware of Alan's dire situation. Mr Ballen added: "And so, screaming in pain and pounding on the door leaving his skin on the door every time he hit it Alan eventually just collapsed to the ground in unimaginable pain as he cooked alive."

Alan was engulfed in flames, with black smoke billowing from his body and filling the factory floor, marking the moment when the factory finally acknowledged the severity of the situation.
Alan's wife Pearl, who also worked at the company, said she absolved co-worker Mark of any blame. Pearl pointed the finger squarely at Pyranha Mouldings Ltd for the horrifying incident, adding: "I blame Pyranha Mouldings Ltd for what happened. It's still a huge shock."

Martin Heywood, a representative from the Health and Safety Executive, shed light on the conditions within the factory. He said: "The doors were set to automatically close whenever the electrical supply was switched back on, which meant there was a high risk of someone being trapped inside."

In connection with this horrific incident in 2011, the firm's technical director Peter Mackereth was found guilty of two health and safety breaches.
