Big Grin The Queens' Favourite TV Show - The Kumars at No. 42

The Queens' Favourite TV Show That She Liked So Much She Could Even Recite One-Liners

Journalist Phil Jones claimed that the Queen once told him what her favourite show on television was and then even went on to recite several lines from the programme

Daily Mail UK 14 SEP 2022

The Kumars at No. 42 was the favourite TV show. The Queen loved the show

Following the Queens' death on September 8, people around the world have been desperate to learn as much about the late monarch as possible, reading memories from those who had met her and discovering all sorts of facts about her life. For instance, some have only just learned that Queen Elizabeth II was never actually meant to take the crown. Others might be interested to learn more about her favourite television show.

In a piece for The New Statesman, journalist Phil Jones claims that back in 2001 the Queen told him all about her favourite programme during a visit to Buckingham Palace. Jones has kept the contents of this conversation secret for over 20 years but recently brought it to light as he's left BBC Radio 2.

He claims the Queen's favourite show was The Kumars at No. 42 and Her Majesty was such a big fan of the programme that she could even "recite some of the one-liners" from it.

Jones wrote: "In 2001 I was invited to a media function at Buckingham Palace.

"We chatted for ages, which I can tell you is rather surreal. My brain kept saying, 'Bloody hell I’m talking to the Queen and I can’t think of a single thing to say!'

"In the end, I alighted on, 'What’s your favourite programme?' Straightaway, she said, 'The Kumars at No. 42' and, even more astonishingly, proceeded to recite some of the one-liners from the grandma character, played by the brilliant Meera Syal."

It was also told by Jones that the Queen was a big fan of Terry Wogan, though this was not such a big secret.

The Kumars at No. 42 was a British television show that ran from 2001 to 2006.

It starred Sanjeev Bhaskar as Sanjeev Kumar, an aspiring chat show host who had celebrity guest over to his house to talk to them.

However, everything started to go wrong when Sanjeev's family started to interrupt the conversations, with the celebs ending up chatting more with his mother, father and grandmother.
