Important WhatsApp to Stop Working on 43 Models:

Should You Keep Using WhatsApp? Plus Five Tips to Start The Year With Your Digital Privacy Intact

We spoke to convicted hacker turned security consultant Kevin Mitnick to find out how to maintain your security online

The Guardian UK, 23JAN 2021.

If you use the popular messaging service WhatsApp you may have noticed a pop-up message in recent days asking you to accept the service’s new terms and conditions by 8 February in order to continue using it.

The update has prompted calls for users to leave the popular messaging service in favour of alternatives such as Signal and Telegram. And on Friday a legal challenge on privacy grounds was filed against WhatsApp in India, the service’s biggest market. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has reported an influx of 25 million global users to the rival service since the announcement was made.

But what do the new terms and conditions mean for you? We asked former most-wanted hacker turned security consultant Kevin Mitnick which messaging app he prefers – and to share his tips to set yourself up for a cyber-safe 2021.

“I prefer Signal because I know the developer behind the original project, and I know that Signal has been tested in the security community,” Mitnick says. “I believe Telegram has too, and I use Telegram, but not for secure messages.”

The main thing to know is that messages remain end-to-end encrypted and WhatsApp maintains that neither it, nor anyone else, has access to the content of messages between friends, family and groups. WhatsApp also says it doesn’t keep records of your call logs, share your contacts with Facebook and can’t see your shared location.

Facebook faces biggest legal battle in years as US officials launch lawsuits

What has changed is privacy around the content of communication between individuals and businesses that use Facebook hosting services, which will now be accessible to those businesses for their own marketing purposes. As the Guardian’s UK technology editor, Alex Hern, points out the changes aren’t huge, but they do mark a step down the road of a long-term plan to integrate the chat app with Facebook.

At the end of the day choosing a messaging app is a personal preference and Mitnick says as long as the service uses end-to-end encryption and its policies protect your privacy you should be OK. Nevertheless, Mitnick says he has “never communicated a secure message over WhatsApp”.

While choosing a messaging service is an important choice, there are other ways you can ensure your digital security. Here are Mitnick’s top five tips for protecting your privacy online.

1. Use a Password Manager

Mitnick says the future of security is password-free, with solutions such as Trusona doing away with usernames and passwords in favour of QR codes and two-factor authentication. But until that technology is widespread, a password manager is the number one tool Mitnick recommends.

Make your master password a full sentence with all the spaces and correct capitalisation, such as “I went to Byron Bay today”. The password manager will do the heavy lifting from there. Every time you visit a site, it will either autofill your existing password or, if it’s a new site, create a strong password for you. Password managers can also scan your current passwords for weaknesses and recommend stronger versions that conform with randomness.

When choosing a password manager, go for Australian, UK or US companies and avoid those based out of Russia or China, Mitnick says. It’s also better to choose a product that has lots of users, like LastPass and One Password, because it’s more likely any vulnerabilities will be picked up quickly.

2. Implement Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication or multi-factor authentication is a sign-in method that requires two or more pieces of evidence of your identity to enable login. The first piece is usually a username and password and the second might be an SMS or an app, such as Google authenticator or Authy. You might find SMS more convenient, but an authenticator app is much more secure.

If you need even more security, you can use a YUBikey – a USB authentication device you plug into your computer. A YUBikey is highly secure, but you do have to carry it around with you.

3. Use a VPN

Mitnick says whenever you’re not on your home or work network you should be using a VPN – a virtual private network – which keeps your browsing safe from spying.

You can find a service online that will cost you around $60 a year, but, again, you want to make sure you’re using a service that has a good reputation, such as HMA or ExpressVPN. There’s always a risk with VPNs and using an untrustworthy service goes against the purpose, since it will have access to all your browsing data.

Things to consider when choosing a service include how many people use it (more is better), and where the company and its servers are located (aim for Five Eyes countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US).

4. Do Security Awareness Training

Mitnick says everyone should undertake good security awareness training, which will help you understand how you, as a consumer, could be compromised. There are security courses available for free online that walk you through different areas of consumer-based security, including passwords, online banking, avoiding malware, keeping your personal information confidential, protecting your kids online, and securing your home network, email and attachments.

5. Keep Your Financial Transactions Separate

Not everyone will be able to implement this last tip and Mitnick acknowledges it’s a pain, however it’s a good idea to use a separate device for financial transactions. When you’re surfing the internet, opening files people send you, playing games, the computer you’re using has a high risk of being compromised without you realising it – even if you’re using antivirus software. Mitnick suggests buying an iPad or cheap tablet to use exclusively for financial transactions. He also suggests creating a separate account in your password manager with a distinct master password to store your financial passwords.

A warning has been issued over a sneaky WhatsApp scam which pretends to come from one of your phone contacts.

Fraudsters are trying to catch people out on the messaging service by posing as someone saved in your phone.

If allowed, the scammers will hack into your device before carrying on the trick with others - while posing as you.

Tech expert Alexis Conran has shared the scam on Twitter and urged people to be vigilant, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Consumer company Which? has now also been informed of the scam and urged the public to be aware.

Update re: WhatsApp Update Deadline Looms >They Want to SPY on You

Reminders on Rise as WhatsApp Update Deadline Looms

Users yet to accept new terms and conditions for the messaging platform WhatsApp will start to get "persistent" reminders after the 15 May deadline.

BBC 14 MAY 2021

The changes relate primarily to the way businesses interact with customers.

Since they were announced, in January, there has been concern about the prospect of increased data sharing with WhatsApp's parent company, Facebook, but this will not be changing.

Most of the app's two billion users had already accepted, the company said.

Those who do not will start to lose functionality - beginning with being unable to see chat lists and ending with not receiving video calls and messages - but no accounts will be deleted.

Following the January announcement, users threatened to boycott the app and rival platforms such as Telegram and Signal saw record downloads.

But WhatsApp said it had been a victim of "misinformation".

WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted, so they can be read on the devices of the sender and recipient only.

In an earlier post, WhatsApp said the data it shared with other Facebook companies included:

phone number and other information provided on registration (such as name)

information about users' phone, including make, model, and mobile company

IP address, which indicates the location of users' internet connection

any payments and financial transactions made over WhatsApp

But this does not apply in Europe and the UK, where different privacy laws exist

WhatsApp Warning Over New App That Mimics Features & Could Leave You Blocked

WhatsApp has warned its billion of users that if they download any unsupported third-party software claiming to have added chat features, they could face permanent exile from the app

Daily Mirror UK, 5 JUL 2021.

WhatsApp has warned its billion of users worldwide they will be blocked from the messaging platform if they download an unofficial app claiming to have added features that WhatsApp still won't unlock.

The Facebook-owned company issued the warning on its website after an unsupported Android app claiming to unlock some new WhatsApp messaging features went viral at the end of last month.

The app goes by the name of 'GB WhatsApp' and boasts of giving users the ability to send more pictures at once and reply with auto-responses such as 'In a meeting'.

It also claims to allow you to hide read receipts while still being able to see others' read status, along with other benefits.

While they may sound attractive to many users, WhatsApp has warned that downloading such unsupported third-party software could come at a huge cost.

It could see you initially suspended from WhatsApp and, if you fail to switch to your official WhatsApp account, you could be banned all together, losing access to the most popular on the planet.

"If you received an in-app message stating your account is 'Temporarily banned' this means that you're likely using an unsupported version of WhatsApp instead of the official WhatsApp app," the Facebook-owned firm said in an update to its small-print on its website.

"If you don't switch to the official app after being temporarily banned, your account might be permanently banned from using WhatsApp."

'GB WhatsApp' isn't available on Google Play Store but only on unofficial app repositories online which force you to disable some of the safeguards turned on by default on Android when downloading, reports the Express,

WhatsApp said: "Unsupported apps, such as WhatsApp Plus, GB WhatsApp, or apps that claim to move your WhatsApp chats between phones, are altered versions of WhatsApp.

"These unofficial apps are developed by third parties and violate our Terms of Service. WhatsApp doesn't support these third-party apps because we can't validate their security practices."

Warning for WhatsApp Users as Loophole Could See Strangers Able to Access Messages

Anyone using WhatsApp could be susceptible to a major security loophole, which puts them at risk of others hacking their messages

Daily Mirror, 5 AUG 2021

WhatsApp users are still susceptible to a major security loophole which could mean hackers gaining access to messages, a tech expert has warned.

Chats on the messaging platform are end-to-end encrypted but could be exposed when backed up via iCloud or Google Drive by cyber thieves.

As well as the potential risk of hackers, it is also possible for law enforcement to request access to messages and media files if they're backed up on the cloud.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a way to independently encrypt user chats before they reach the cloud.

In a Twitter post, it said: "WhatsApp is finally enabling another important feature: the possibility to encrypt your backups!

"What does it mean? Encrypting your backups protect your chat history and media from unauthorized access."

The feature being trialled on the beta version of the Android app, with users who opt in to get chat history and anything else shared back up securely.

🆕 WhatsApp is also working to bring end-to-end encrypted LOCAL backups on WhatsApp beta for Android!
They were working on E2EE backups on Google Drive, but they will extend the feature for local backups as well.

This feature will be available in a future update.

What should you do if you have one of these phones?

Sadly if you want to continue using WhatsApp, you may need to consider upgrading your phone.

However, if you're holding off buying a new phone and want to save your chat history there is a way of doing it.

You can back up your message history to Google Drive or iCloud depending on which platform you use (iOS or Android).

Alternatively, you can export your chat history as an email attachment.

If you have a younger phone but are running it on outdated software, now is probably a good time to update your phone.

To do so, you need to look in the general settings to download and install the upgrade.

It is ideal to have WiFi enabled when doing so unless you are ok with using your phone data, but if it is a large download then it could be costly.

Sadly if you want to continue using WhatsApp, you may need to consider upgrading your phone.

If your phone is too old to update the software then you may want to think about upgrading to a newer model in order to continue to use the app.

WhatsApp has lost a lot of users over the last year due to ongoing privacy concerns around its new terms of service.

WhatsApp has traditionally marketed itself on offering secure, encrypted messaging, but announced wildly unpopular changes to the way it handles user data.

These changes would have seen user data handed to private companies to aid in marketing.

WhatsApp U-turned drastically on the plans following a major backlash which has seen competitors Telegram surpass one billion downloads.

It seems big tech companies are closing in on anyone who doesn't want to buy the latest kit every year.

Google announced that it plans to completely end sign-in support for older Android devices this month. That means anyone with a device older than Android 2.3.7 will no longer be able to access basic Google services that make their phones functional.
