Microsoft Upgrade to Windows 11? MSoft Recommends NO to Many

Windows 10's New Start Menu May Kill Live Tiles Forever

HTG 27 FEB20

Windows 10X Has a Start Menu Without Live Tiles

Microsoft hasn’t officially announced it yet, but the writing is on the wall: Windows 10’s live tiles are going away.

Windows 10X has a new Start menu without live tiles, and we expect it to arrive on all versions of Windows 10.

Windows 10 ...MAY 2021 > Update Is Here; Windows 10X Is NO MORE

HTG 19 May, 2021

Another big Windows 10 plan bites the dust

Windows 10X was going to be a dramatically redesigned version of Windows 10: First, it would appear on dual-screen devices. Then, it would roll out to other PCs.

Later, Microsoft changed its mind and announced Windows 10X would arrive on traditional PCs first. It had some big new features, like a redesigned interface and container functionality that would isolate desktop applications from each other and from the rest of the Windows operating system.

Now, none of that is happening. A few of Windows 10X’s planned features may arrive on other editions of Windows 10, but Windows 10X is no more. Add it to the pile of failed Windows versions along with Windows 10 in S Mode, Windows 10 S, and Windows RT....

Anyway, Windows 10’s May 2021 Update is out...

Microsoft Windows 11 CONFIRMED: The LEAKED Build

Windows 10’s Weather Widget Is a Mess. Is Windows 11 Next?

Have you heard about the big new interface changes in Windows in June 2021? No, we’re not talking about the Windows 11 announcement Microsoft is teasing. We’re talking about that buggy new weather widget popping up on more than a billion Windows 10 PCs.

HTG 16 JUN 2021

Why Is It So Blurry?

The blurry News and Interests widget on Windows 10's taskbar.

Windows 10’s Weather widget—technically called the “News and interests” widget—makes a terrible first impression on many PCs. It’s just so… blurry. Why is the text so blurry?

The real question isn’t why it’s so blurry, of course. The real question is why Microsoft rolled out the taskbar weather widget to everyone’s Windows PCs in such a buggy state.

As Windows Latest points out, Microsoft was aware of the blurriness (and other issues) before this feature was released. The issue was even apparently fixed in a preview build. But Microsoft shoved this feature out of the door to everyone in an unpolished form rather than making it work right first.

RIP Windows 10’s Weather App

Okay, Windows 10’s Weather app isn’t dead yet, but it seems dead to Microsoft. If you click the weather information in the Weather widget you’ll see the weather on MSN.com in your web browser.

This isn’t a surprise. The Weather widget is designed to push MSN on Windows 10 users.

MSN Ads News on Your Taskbar

The News and Interests panel popping up from Windows 10's taskbar.

Have you ever wondered why you have to click your mouse to see the latest trending news stories on MSN? Wouldn’t it be great if they just popped up as you moved your mouse cursor around the screen?

By default, when you move your mouse cursor over the Weather widget, it will pop up a panel full of news stories, sports scores, and other stuff from “Microsoft News.”

How to Remove Weather and News from Windows 10's Taskbar

With a single click from anywhere, you’re now reading a story on MSN.com and seeing ads. This Weather widget is a great new source of revenue for Microsoft. (At least you can disable Weather on the taskbar.)

It’s Bad Under the Hood, Too

But it’s not that bad, right—-is it? Well, here are some other problems with the Weather widget:

It Ignores Your Default Browser: When you click a story, it will always open Microsoft Edge.

Web-Based Configuration: Rather than a normal Windows settings interface, the News and Interests panel is configured on a web page in your browser.

It’s Just So Blurry: Seriously, why is it so blurry?

According to prominent Windows leaker Albacore, this is just “the old Search/Cortana app” showing a different web page. It uses the old and discontinued EdgeHTML engine from the original Edge browser, which was removed from Windows 10 in favor of the new Edge.

Albacore says the blurriness is caused by the fact that the widget itself is an embedded web view. Yes, with this feature enabled, the Windows taskbar is now basically showing a website all the time. Welcome to Windows in 2021.

Please, Microsoft: Just Do It Right

Look, we’re not totally against this feature! Having the weather on Windows 10’s taskbar is a cool idea. And some people will likely enjoy the news, interests, and other up-to-the-minute information the panel provides.

What’s sad is how cheap and low-quality the News and Interests widget feels. It doesn’t feel like something designed to make Windows better. It feels like shovelware designed to push MSN at the expense of the Windows experience.

After all, not only do Macs have an extremely polished interface, but Chrome OS is looking pretty slick, too. Neither competing platform has blurry web views on its taskbar.

Computer users have options, and Microsoft should respect its users enough to polish features like this before they’re deployed.

After all, what are you gonna do, switch to a Mac? Haha—wait a minute, come back!

Bad News for Windows 11

Microsoft keeps teasing amazing “Sun Valley” design coming soon. Perhaps it will even be called Windows 11!

But why does it feel like Microsoft’s Windows interface designers have just given up?

We’re all supposed to be excited about a new Windows user interface design from the team that brought up this blurry, buggy, lazy Weather widget?

Say what you will about the People Bar—at least it wasn’t blurry when
Microsoft released it on us. Windows 10’s new features are going downhill.

Update re: MSCHIT GURUS Back Down: W11 Will Run on Any PC ..

Windows 11 CONFIRMED: What We Learned From the Leaked Build

Goodbye Windows 10

HTG, 18 JUN 2021

Say goodbye to Windows 10: Windows 11 is on the way. We played with the first leaked build of Windows 11, which appeared on June 15, 2021. Here’s what Microsoft has in store for your PC.

Note: This is based on a leaked prerelease of Windows 11, so the final version will probably be more polished. (Then again, Microsoft has released some unpolished things lately.)

Is Windows 11 Just a Renamed Windows 10X?

Microsoft may have axed Windows 10X in name only. The new Start menu design being tested for Windows 10X makes an appearance here. Live tiles are gone.

For some reason, the Start button and pinned taskbar icons are now in the center of your taskbar. As you open and pin applications, the Start button gradually moves to the left on your taskbar. As you close and unpin them, it gradually moves to the right.

Now you can’t move your mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen to access your Start button by default. This seems like a big violation of Fitt’s Law—in other words, it’s easier to get your mouse cursor to a corner and click on it. It’s also a rather funny move from the company that brought us Windows 8, which was absolutely obsessed with the concept of mouse-based hot corners.

The good news is that you can move the Start button and pinned applications back to the left side of your taskbar. If you right-click the taskbar and select “Taskbar Settings,” it takes you to the Settings > Personalization > Taskbar window and you can change the “Taskbar Alignment” setting to control this.

Easy Window Management With Snap

Windows 11 includes some smart tweaks. Snap is much improved—something that was likely inspired by the dual-screen devices Windows 10X was originally designed for.

Now, you can mouse over the “Maximize” button on any window’s title bar to see a menu of Snap options. Click one of the gray rectangles or squares to choose a screen layout and position for the window.

You can do this on Windows 10 today by dragging a window to the left edge, right edge, or any of the four corners of the screen, but the new interface should make this more discoverable to the average Windows user.

The same keyboard shortcuts for Snap work on both Windows 10 and Windows 11, too: Press and hold the Windows key and tap the arrow keys to move the current window between Snap regions.

Windows 11's leaked Snap popup

The Weather Widget Becomes the Widget Widget

What if Windows 10’s Weather widget didn’t actually show the weather on your taskbar and was just a “Widgets” button that would open the News and Interests feed?

That’s the question Microsoft is answering with the “Widgets” button that appears to the right of the Task View button.

In the leaked build, clicking the button shows widgets over your open applications windows or the desktop. It’s called the “Windows Dashboard.” We think it looks cleaner with a background.

This already has us missing Windows 10’s Weather widget.

But What About the Rest of Windows 10X?

Unfortunately, there’s no indication that Windows 11 includes one of Windows 10X’s most exciting features: The ability to run apps in containers for security reasons, providing better protection from rootkit-like malware and buggy applications that can crash your operating system.

This container-based technology was designed to help Windows 11 install big updates in less than 90 seconds thanks to a read-only operating system. While this might change, Windows 11 mostly appears to be skin deep for now.

Windows 11 doesn’t appear designed to run on dual-screen devices, either. That was the original point of Windows 10X when it was originally announced, after all: A new interface for a new type of device.

In other words, It looks like the features in Windows 10X that were the most technically complex are gone. Instead, the interface being tested for Windows 10X is being recycled into Windows 11.

Are the Changes Just Skin Deep?

So is Windows 11 really a big change? Our sister site Review Geek is branding it “a lightly skinned Windows 10.”

There’s some merit to that. The Settings app looks straight out of Windows 10, for example. If you were hoping the Control Panel would finally be gone and we’d have a unified settings interface, too bad: The Control Panel lives on alongside the Settings app in Windows 11. Is the Control Panel ever going away?

Those new icons in File Explorer look pretty slick, though!

Will There Be a New Store App?

There’s been a lot of chatter that we’d see a new Microsoft Store app with more of a focus on desktop apps. It’s something that we wish Microsoft had originally done with Windows 8 rather than spending a decade trying to make Metro, Modern, and then Univeral Windows Platform apps happen.

However, in this leaked build, the Microsoft Store appears exactly as it does in Windows 10.

Want a Local Account? That Costs Extra

Finally, one change that isn’t a surprise: Microsoft has been pushing Microsoft accounts on Windows 10 users for a while now. It’s hard to create a local account while installing Windows 10—you have to disconnect your PC from the internet first.

In Windows 11, that doesn’t seem to work. With the standard Windows 11 Home, you can’t create a local account anymore. You’ll need the more expensive Windows 11 Professional edition to do that.

(With Windows 11 Professional, you can select Set Up for Personal Use > Sign-in Options > Offline Account > Limited Experience to create a local account. But you can’t do this on Windows 11 Home.)

Creating a Microsoft account in Windows 11's leaked setup process

But Wasn’t Windows 10 the Last Version of Windows?

Microsoft’s Jerry Nixon famously called Windows 10 “the last version of Windows” before it was released. Now, Microsoft is releasing a new version of Windows.

Well, let’s face it: “Windows as a service” was a bad idea anyway.

Windows Isn't a Service; It's an Operating System

It does seem like Windows 10 users will likely get the upgrade for free:

Our colleagues over at Review Geek were able to activate Windows 11 with a Windows 7 key. (Yes, you can still activate Windows 10 with a Windows 7 key!)

But when will it be released? Are there any other new features? What about the new Windows Store? Is the Settings app getting a visual upgrade? There are a lot of outstanding questions!

We’ll hear more about Windows 11 at Microsoft’s event on 24 June 2021.

Computers re: MSCHIT GURUS Back Down: W11 Will Run on Any PC ..

W11 Makes It Hard to Change Your Default Web Browser

With W11 Available as a Beta and W10 ending
14 October 2025, you might be wondering what will happen to your PC if you don’t upgrade.

HTGeek 1 AUG 2021

Microsoft is moving full steam ahead on Windows 11. A month after its first “dev” release, Windows 11 is now available in beta form as of July 29, 2021. If you want to try Windows 11 but were intimidated by the dev channel warnings, now might be the time.

Do I Have to Upgrade to Windows 11?

Even though Windows 11 is coming this fall, Microsoft says you won’t have to upgrade your Windows 10 installation to Windows 11. Like previous major “Feature Updates” to Windows 10, we guess that you’ll be able to decline or defer any offer Microsoft makes to upgrade your system by not starting the upgrade process in Windows Update.

Until October 14, 2025, you won’t have any trouble sticking with Windows 10. Microsoft will keep supporting Windows 10 until that date, and you can still use it safely on your current PC while expecting vital security updates to arrive when necessary.

But after October 14, 2025, running Windows 10 will become a lot riskier. That’s because Microsoft will stop releasing new security updates for Windows 10 on that date. If someone discovers a new exploit or vulnerability in Windows 10 after that date, Microsoft won’t release a Windows 10 update to fix it.

Will Windows 10 Stop Working When Windows 11 Launches?

When Windows 11 launches, you’ll still be able to use Windows 10 as you normally do now. It won’t stop working automatically.

Whenever Windows 11 launches, Microsoft will likely offer Windows 10 users a chance to upgrade to Windows 11 for free from within Windows Update in Settings. If you decline the update, you might still see pop-up reminders asking you to upgrade to Windows 11, unless your PC doesn’t support it.

After Windows 10 support expires in 2025, Windows 10 will still work. You’ll just be at a greater security risk.

What If I Can’t Upgrade to Windows 11?

You may have already checked your PC and realized that it won’t be able to upgrade to Windows 11. If that’s the case, you have a few options. The most secure option will be to buy to a newer PC some time before that 2025 cutoff date. That way, you’ll be running the latest, most secure Windows OS. The other option is to keep using Windows 10, which comes with significant security risks.

What Happens If I Keep Using Windows 10?

Every time a Windows upgrade comes along, there are always some people who prefer to stick to an older version of Windows, even when it becomes unsupported. Even today, some holdouts still use Windows 7, Windows 8, or even earlier versions like Windows XP every day. But those people take on dramatically greater security risks.

What could go wrong? A lot of things. Running an unsupported version of Windows 10, you’ll be more susceptible to malware that spies on you or damages your data, ransomware that holds your data hostage, RAT software that compromises your webcam, and more.

After a few years, some applications may drop support for Windows 10, which will leave you vulnerable to other types of security exploits if you can’t keep them updated to their latest versions.

What’s the Safest Way to Keep Running Windows 10?

First of all, we don’t recommend running Windows 10 beyond October 14, 2025. It’s simply not worth the risk, and basic PCs (even used PCs) that can run Windows 11 should be inexpensive at that point.

There’s no doubt that, even with the risks, people who practice good security hygiene will have a better chance at running Windows 10 without major issues past the 2025 cutoff date. Here are a few common-sense things that everyone can do, even now, to stay safe online:

But let’s face it: How many people brush their teeth twice a day and floss after every meal like dentists recommend? Some people do, but not everybody. So for the average Windows PC owner, it’s best to upgrade to the latest version of Windows and stick to it—while also practicing everything listed above—to greatly reduce your chances of getting hit with malware, ransomware, or another security exploit.

In the End, It’s Best to Upgrade

When Windows 11 launches, Windows 10 will begin its fade into the sunset—whether we like it or not. You may feel pressure to make an upgrade decision immediately, but that’s not necessarily the case. As of this writing, you have over four years to plan ahead before Windows 10 support ends, which is a long time in the tech world.

But do take the time to plan ahead so you can make a smooth transition to Windows 11 when the time comes. (Or, there’s always another option: Install Linux on your PC when Windows 10 support expires.) Good luck, and stay safe out there!

Don't Panic: You Can Keep Using Windows 10 Until 14 October 2025

Microsoft re: MSCHIT GURUS Back Down: W11 Will Run on Any PC ..

Why Windows 11's Best Feature Is New Emoji (Seriously)

Windows 10’s emoji look strange. That’s no surprise because they were designed for Windows 8—and they haven’t aged well.

Windows 11 completely replaces every single emoji in Windows, getting rid of that flat design language and delivering something beautiful and modern.

HTG, 24 AUG 2021

Take a Look at Windows 11’s New Emoji

Microsoft is solving this problem by throwing out Windows 10’s emoji and replacing them with new, totally redesigned, made-from-scratch emoji. Now, you might actually want to press Windows+. (period) to insert emoji.

Really? Windows 11’s Best Feature?

Windows 11 doesn’t have a big standout feature. What’s really great about Windows 11 is the polish. Microsoft actually seems to be sitting down and rethinking the entire interface so that it all makes sense and looks like it belongs together.

Sometimes, we disagree with Microsoft’s decisions, but Microsoft is finally putting some work into making Windows look good. Just take a look at the new folder icons in File Explorer.

So yes, we’re going to say that the emoji are Windows 11’s best feature. They’re the best example of polish in Windows 11: Taking a long-forgotten part of Windows with a phoned-in design and putting a lot of effort into making it look really good.

Seriously, Microsoft even animated them! That’s going above and beyond.

Microsoft Re: MSCHIT GURUS Back Down: W11 Will Run on Any PC

Microsoft Backs Down: Windows 11 Will Run on Any PC

HTG 29 AUG 2021.

One of the most significant sticking points with Windows 11 is the strict system requirements.

However, Microsoft has just announced that any PC can install the Windows 11 ISO, opening up the new OS to just about anyone who wants to install it.

Windows 11 Running on Older PCs

Microsoft is mostly sticking to the original Windows 11 system requirements, though the company did add a few more processors to the list of supported models. However, the firm told The Verge that it would only enforce restrictions when upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11—a fresh installation with a Windows 11 ISO would have no such restrictions.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that Windows 11 will run well on older PCs since Microsoft is optimizing it for newer, more powerful computers. However, at least you’ll be able to try for yourself to see whether it’ll work. Microsoft also said it intends for this workaround to be used by businesses that wanted to evaluate Windows 11, not so much by regular users. The company doesn’t even plan to advertise this method to consumers.

You’ll still need to have a 64-bit 1GHz processor with two or more cores, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage to even think about running Windows 11, but at least your PC won’t have to fall into Microsoft’s stricter list of supported CPUs.

Of course, many more casual PC users will run the Windows 11 upgrade process, be told they can’t install the OS, and never think about downloading an ISO to install Windows 11. But for those willing to go through that extra layer, it’s nice to see that Microsoft has backed off and relaxed its stance.

Other Processors Getting Full Windows 11 Approval

Microsoft also announced that some other processors are getting Windows 11 support. There’s the Intel Core X-series, Xeon W-series, and select devices running the Intel Core 7820HQ chips. While these aren’t a ton of new processors, any additional computers getting the easy Windows 11 upgrade path is a good thing.
