Detectives investigating the Jimmy Savile child sex abuse scandal have arrested Gary Glitter on suspicion of sexual offences in the first of what is likely to be a series of arrests of suspected associates of the late DJ.

The glam rocker, who was a friend of Savile and appeared on his TV shows, was arrested at his London home early on Sunday by Scotland Yard officers working on Operation Yewtree, which is following about 400 lines of inquiry involving 300 victims – mostly young girls but also a few boys – of alleged sexual exploitation by Savile and others.

Glitter was taken into custody at a London police station and held for more than nine hours before being bailed until mid-December pending further inquiries.

The arrest was made amid growing public anger about Savile's activities and a suspected cover-up by the BBC. Over the weekend the walls and windows of Savile's cottage in Glencoe, where he once entertained Prince Charles to a private supper, were daubed with "abusive slogans" according to a spokesman for the Northern Constabulary. "Jimmy the beast" and "Worst beast" were painted in black half-a-metre high letters on the side of the building in the Highlands, which was searched last week by police looking for "evidence of any others being involved in any offending with him".

Glitter, 68, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was filmed leaving his home on Sunday morning, wearing a hat, sunglasses, dark coat and gloves. He was driven away in an unmarked people carrier without commenting.
He has previously denied allegations he was involved in child sex abuse with Savile. He was drawn into the scandal after Karin Ward, a former pupil at Duncroft approved school for girls in Surrey, told the BBC last year that she had seen Glitter having sex with a schoolgirl in Savile's BBC dressing room while Savile and several other people were there.

Glitter is a convicted paedophile. He was jailed for four months in the UK in 1999 for downloading child porn, and in 2006 for child sex offences in Vietnam where he served two-and-a-half years in prison. Glitter always maintained he was innocent of the charges.

The corporation cancelled plans to broadcast a Newsnight expose of Savile's sex crimes last year, which included testimony from Ward. Lord Patten, chairman of the BBC Trust, has apologised unreservedly to the abused women who spoke to Newsnight but did not have their stories told. He said there would be "no covering our backs" in the BBC's investigation of the abuse scandal.

"Can it really be the case that no one knew what he was doing?" he asked in an article for the Mail on Sunday. "Did some turn a blind eye to criminality? Did some prefer not to follow up their suspicions because of this criminal's popularity and place in the schedules? Were reports of criminality put aside or buried? Even those of us who were not there at the time are inheritors of the shame."

The editor of Newsnight, Peter Rippon, has already stood aside and on Sunday it was claimed that the BBC's former director general, Mark Thompson, must have known about sex abuse allegations against Savile because they were raised with his office by journalists earlier this year.

In May the BBC was asked by the Sunday Times, under the Freedom of Information Act, to reveal what it knew about exchanges between BBC bosses – including Thompson – about Savile and the Newsnight investigation as well as any contact the BBC had with police over claims that Savile "sexually molested minors on BBC premises in the 1970s". When it refused to answer, a reporter called Thompson's office and asked to speak to him about the claims.
Thompson has repeatedly denied having any personal knowledge of the allegations. A spokesman for Thompson, who takes over as chief executive of the New York Times next month, said he was on holiday at the time and "this brief conversation was not relayed to him, either then or subsequently".

In September, ITV separately emailed the BBC with detailed questions about the findings of its own investigation based on interviews with 10 victims. The broadcaster confirmed the note was forwarded to Thompson's office, but a spokesman for Thompson said the former director general does "not recall being briefed and took no part in the response to the email".
Last week police revealed that they were investigating three former BBC bosses from a 1980s TV programme after some of the 130 victims they have interviewed claimed the men were in league with Savile. The publicist Max Clifford said on Saturday that up to 15 celebrities had approached him, fearful that their sexual exploits in the 1960s and 1970s might lead to them being caught up in the police inquiry.

On Sunday evening, Savile's great-niece told Sky News she believed some members of his family knew of what they called his "dark side" but that they turned a blind eye to it. Caroline Robinson, 49, said she was sexually abused twice by Savile: at a family gathering when she was 12, and again at an engagement party when she was 15.

"It was not as though I was on my own. There were members of the family there as well," she said. "Jimmy got it down to perfection, where he managed to do it … and nobody noticed.

"After it happened when I was 12, I spoke to my grandmother. I told her what Jimmy had done. Her reply was: 'It's only Jimmy, it doesn't matter, I'll sort it out'. I think certain members of the family who were closer to him knew what kind of man he was but they kept it secret."

They emerged as it was revealed Scotland Yard investigated the pervert for molesting a young girl in a mobile home at BBC Television Centre up to 30 years ago.
But they failed to act and merely warned him to stay away from children rather than take the chance to arrest him for his sick crimes.

The Jim’ll Fix It star faced questions in the 1980s after the child claimed she was indecently assaulted in his caravan, which he had parked outside the BBC’s headquarters.
The allegation came to light after a retired officer from the Met’s juvenile bureau at Hammersmith and Fulham police station came forward.

He said there had not been enough evidence to prosecute Savile.
It is one of the earliest known full police inquiries into the entertainer and took place at the height of his abuse.

It means police missed at least seven chances to expose Savile’s crimes during his lifetime.

Officers in forces including the Met, Surrey and Sussex investigated his activities but the claims were never made public. And it raises fresh questions about what the BBC knew about his sordid activities and whether there was a cover-up.

Details of the investigation emerged as the man in charge of Scotland Yard’s investigation said it marks a ‘watershed’ in tackling child abuse.

Commander Peter Spindler said 300 people have now claimed to be victims of the TV presenter and others in his circle, while the size of the team responsible for the investigation has been trebled to 30.

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Agency has been asked to examine whether anyone named by victims is still working with children.

These could include BBC staff and even doctors from some of the hospitals where Savile abused patients under the guise of charity.

Mr Spindler said: ‘While Britain reflects on how Savile was able to hide in plain sight, I think it’s quite important that we focus on what’s happening today in our society.
'Our activities in the coming weeks will be a stark warning to any men out there today who think they can exploit their positions of power and influence and abuse children and young people in Britain.

‘I want them to take heed and tell them that we will come for them. You may believe you will get away with your crimes.
'But one day – it might not be this decade – we will come and get justice for those victims. Victims may not want to speak straight away, but when they are ready, we will be listening.’

Scotland Yard’s inquiry, Operation Yewtree, is moving into a new and more secretive phase as detectives prepare to arrest surviving suspects.

The Met has also discovered a second complaint made in 2003 by a woman who said she had been abused in the 1970s, he revealed.

Mr Spindler added: ‘She did not want a prosecution but wanted us to know what happened in case there was a pattern of offending.’

Nestled in the Highlands a mile from any other building is paedophile Jimmy Savile's Scottish hideaway, and these pictures show the chilling scene inside the cottage where he may have abused more than 20 people.
The remote white-washed property outside the village of Glencoe has been untouched since the pervert died last year and now police have raided it hunting for evidence of his crimes.
Frozen in time, his hairbrush, documents, ashtray and even his food are shown scattered around the empty home just as he left them.
Other rooms in the cottage, where he once entertained Prince Charles over dinner, contain bunk beds and a double bed all made up neatly with fresh bed linen.

Officers believe Sir Jimmy's cottage, called Alt-na-reigh, could hold vital clues that could help the Britain-wide investigation.

The property was swooped on yesterday by three cars full of police. It is believed that they were looking for forensic evidence.

Famously Savile had the Prince of Wales around for dinner in 1999 and hired three waitresses in aprons with HRH sewn into them.

It came as a police source said today that the number of the broadcaster's victims was 'fast approaching' 300, with 400 separate lines of inquiry, Scotland Yard said this afternoon.

Meanwhile 160 people alone have complained of abuse to the NSPCC since the scale of Savile's paedophilia was revealed.

'Glencoe will be one of the first places they search. There are more than 300 lines of enquiry – and the house is part of that,' a source close to the investigation said.

The Northern Constabulary, which led the raid, said they were helping the Met with their probe, while Scotland Yard said they would not comment on the ongoing investigation.

Savile maintained it was his dream to live in the Highlands and he spent huge sums converting the home, adding glass walls, mains water and sewage as well as modernising its decor throughout.

Because the cottage remains untouched since his death, it is stacked full of photos, clothes and documents, which could lead to identifying more victims or help those who have already made allegations of abuse.

A hospital volunteer has said Jimmy Savile raped her while wearing a 'Sex instructor, first lesson free' T-shirt.

And a former Stoke Mandeville nurse has also waived her anonymity to tell how the pervert DJ assaulted her in her bedroom.

Helen Wakeling said Savile shoved her on to a bed and tried to molest her.
Mrs Wakeling, 59, of south-west London, said: 'One afternoon in 1973, I came off duty at about 4.30 and bumped into Jimmy Savile and I invited him round to the nurses' quarters for a cup of tea. I made him tea in my room, and the next thing I know he pushed me on to the bed and jumped on top of me.
'I was so shocked, but I was 20 and a Londoner and I just said to him, “What do you think you're doing?” 'He was trying to grope me, but I shouted at him and pushed him off. He stood up and said he was “only joking”, but obviously he wasn't.'

Meanwhile detectives investigating Jimmy Savile have been passed the names of three doctors accused of molesting youngsters.They abused children at the same hospitals where the late entertainer preyed on young and vulnerable patients, it can be revealed.

One victim told the Mail she was groped aged 12 by a Stoke Mandeville doctor who had a Jim'll Fix It picture on his wall.

Another woman, who named a separate doctor, is convinced there was a 'sex abuse ring' operating at the Buckinghamshire hospital.

There are now demands for a full independent inquiry into how Savile was given easy access to his victims at children's homes and NHS hospitals, as well as at the BBC. So far, no NHS trust has apologised for Savile – despite him being given the keys to Broadmoor, a bedroom room at Stoke Mandeville and free rein of Leeds General Infirmary.
James Huestis from Renfrewshire said: 'We stopped to have breakfast. On the way out, we saw Savile. He was very friendly and chatty.

'I asked for his autograph and I was struggling to get a bit of paper. So I went to the car and got the map. He opened it on the page where his cottage was. The he wrote his note.

'At the time I didn’t think anything of it. I thought it was a bit of banter. Now it takes on a different meaning. The message is pretty clear.'
The cottage was to be sold this year for £300,000 but this was halted by his charitable trust, who wanted to convert it into a respite centre for the disabled.

But this is now in doubt after it announced it is to close down.

Trustees had hoped the property - one of only two in the Glencoe gorge - could be used by mountaineering groups.
But the Mountaineering Council of Scotland said it had had no further contact since before the scandal broke.
A spokeswoman for the trust said all funds would be distributed to other charities but details over assets such as the cottage 'are still being worked out at present.'
It came as it was alleged two BBC staff may have been carrying out vile sex crimes on the same scale as Jimmy Savile.

Bosses at the corporation have passed dossiers on the pair's alleged behaviour - who may still be working at the organisation - to police.

They are two of the nine staff they are currently investigating, sources said.

It came as Scottish police raided and began a search of Jimmy Savile's former home in the Highlands, where he may have raped and abused more than 20 people.
Potentially hundreds of children were abused by Savile, many on BBC premises, and an insider told The Sun that a couple of others may be on the same level as the pervert DJ.

'There are one or two that are serious and a small number are with the police,' the source added.
A BBC spokesman told MailOnline today: 'As a result of the allegations about Jimmy Savile and subsequent contact from staff, former staff and members of the public, we are currently aware of nine allegations of sexual harassment, assault or inappropriate conduct regarding current staff or contributors.

'Some of these cases have been passed to the police where appropriate, and we are reviewing others within our normal HR processes and procedures.'

Lord Patten, who has come under criticism for the speed of his response, said that the best way of restoring public trust in the BBC was for the independent inquiries set up to look into the scandal to get to the bottom of what happened as soon as possible and for the corporation to be 'open' about what they find.

A veteran TV presenter has claimed he was 'laughed at' by his bosses for raising concerns about Jimmy Savile after seeing him grope a child in an ITV studio.

Broadcaster Alan Hardwick (above right) spoke of his shock at seeing the shamed Jim’ll Fix It star brazenly pinch a young girl’s bottom in front of a room full of other youngsters.

But disgusted Alan, 63, revealed that peers told him that it was well-known the disgraced star 'liked them young' when he approached them about the incident.

Alan, who presented Yorkshire Television’s flagship ‘Calendar’ news programme, said he was convinced TV execs had covered up Savile’s behaviour because of his popularity.

'I went into the studio and standing with his back to me was Jimmy Savile with about half a dozen girls with him. They were probably 12 or 13,' he said.

'They were about to go on set so I decided I would speak to Savile later but before I could leave he squeezed the bottom of the little girl to his right who he had his arm around.

'The thing that’s always stayed with me was the look on her face, it wasn’t quite horror but it was hard to describe.

'It was haunting, it has haunted me for 20 years, even since then whenever I have heard Savile’s name that’s the picture that comes in to my mind.

'I raised the issue with a manager, who said that the girl must have been a relative to Savile and was just being friendly and I accepted that.

'I mentioned it to other people in the industry and at the BBC and I was laughed at because they all said, ‘Don’t you know that Savile likes them young?’ I felt a bit of a fool.'
An ITV spokesman said: 'We will be speaking to Mr Hardwick as a matter of priority with a view to establishing the details relating to the serious allegation he makes and will take whatever action is appropriate.'

The Trust chairman admitted that he did not read press reports earlier this year about the scrapping of a Newsnight film exposing Savile, but denied charges that he was devoting too little time to the job of heading the BBC’s regulator because of his other interests.

He said that BBC director general George Entwistle had faced a 'baptism of fire' after taking up the job in September, as the corporation was engulfed by a 'tsunami of filth' within weeks of his appointment.

Asked about Mr Entwistle’s widely-criticised appearance before the Commons Culture Committee earlier this week, Lord Patten did not leap to the defence of his performance, but said that even 'a combination of Benjamin Disraeli and Mr Gladstone' would have had a difficult job dealing with the hearing.

Lord Patten confirmed that he had offered to join Mr Entwistle in front of the committee of MPs, but was turned down.

And he appeared to suggest that it was him who insisted on inaccuracies about the Newsnight investigation in a blog by editor Peter Rippon being corrected.

He agreed that it was 'wrong' for a BBC executive to rely on the misleading information when writing to Conservative chairman Grant Shapps ahead of his appearance to discuss the Savile case on BBC1’s Question Time.

And he said the terms used in the letter were 'unfortunate'.

Mr Shapps has complained to the BBC Trust about the letter from BBC head of public affairs Julia Ockenden.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s World at One, Lord Patten said: 'Whatever the other questions we get asked and the other considerations, our main concern has to be for the victims of abuse and worse - men as well as women, but mostly women, who have been marooned for years, trying to tell their stories and not being believed - including, it seems, by the BBC.

'We have to deal with the terrible damage to the reputation of the BBC, which has hitherto been a national institution which people have trusted.

'The way of getting at this issue is by pursuing the inquiries which have been set up - independent inquiries led by people of huge integrity.

'Whatever the perfectly legitimate questions people ask about other things, my main concern has to be to get to the bottom of what has happened and be open about it as soon as we can.'
Lord Patten also said it was important to remember that 'the BBC is independent, it is answerable to licence fee-payers, it is not an agent of the Government'.

And he stressed that the BBC Trust was not involved in the editorial decisions made by the broadcaster: 'We don't have any executive responsibility over the BBC, we are the strategic authority, we have the obligation to hold the BBC to account for complying with the law, with statutory regulations and with our objectives for programme quality.

'One reason we don't interfere with editorial decisions is we have to deal with complaints which may be made about those editorial decisions.'

A senior Government minister has now said he cannot see 'any merit' in holding a full independent inquiry into Jimmy Savile scandal.

Commons leader Andrew Lansley said investigations by the police and the independent probes commissioned by the BBC and NHS should be allowed to run their course.

Labour said the BBC still had 'serious questions to answer' following director-general George Entwistle’s “unsatisfactory” appearance in front of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee.

But answering questions in the Commons, Mr Lansley said: “There are inquiries being undertaken by the police, of course, as a criminal investigation; by Kate Lampard on behalf of the NHS and appointed by the BBC two inquiries by Nick Pollard and by Dame Janet Smith.

'All of those are independent and I see no reason for us at this stage to think that there would be any merit in seeking to overturn those inquiries which are making progress but simply to make sure, which I know they will, that they all respect and understand that the police’s criminal investigation must take precedence.'

Police investigating the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal are dealing with around 300 alleged victims, Scotland Yard revealed today.

Commander Peter Spindler said officers are following more than 400 lines of inquiry linked to the victims, of whom all except two are women.

He said investigators have so far spoken to 130 people who have come forward, and 114 allegations of crime have emerged.

Officers are using a 'triage' approach, first making contact with victims by phone to get initial details of their allegations, Mr Spindler said.

He told reporters that most of the allegations are linked to Savile, but some involve others who may have acted with him.

The inquiry will be a 'watershed' moment in the investigation of child abuse, he said, adding nobody has yet been arrested or interviewed under caution as yet, but the force is 'preparing an arrest strategy;.

'We are trying to make contact with as many victims as quickly as we can. We are doing it initially by telephone but some of those telephone contacts are taking up to four hours.

'This may be the first time that some people have actually spoken in any detail, and we don't underestimate how significant an event it is for them to disclose sexual abuse.'
So far, the NSPCC has had 439 calls about sexual abuse in the past three weeks, a 60 per cent rise on what they would normally receive. Two out of five have been referred to social services and the police.

Mrs Wakeling, 59, of South West London, said: 'One afternoon in 1973, I came off duty at about 4.30 and bumped into Jimmy Savile and I invited him round to the nurses' quarters for a cup of tea. I made him tea in my room, and the next thing I know he pushed me on to the bed and jumped on top of me.
'I was so shocked, but I was 20 and a Londoner and I just said to him, “What do you think you're doing?” 'He was trying to grope me, but I shouted at him and pushed him off. He stood up and said he was “only joking”, but obviously he wasn't.'

There are already accusations Savile had at least one accomplice at the BBC, and at Top of the Pops, he allegedly ran a 'gang of four' – staff including a cameraman who were part of the paedophile scandal.

But Pete Saunders, of the National Association for People Abused in Childhood, said the NHS was a major line of inquiry. He said:

'We have had several calls alleging abuses by doctors at the same hospitals that Savile worked at. This is much bigger than we thought.'

One woman said her Stoke Mandeville doctor sexually abused her every fortnight for four years from the age of 14. She said:

'There is no doubt in my mind there was a sex abuse ring operating at Stoke Mandeville. It is no coincidence that this man was doing the same thing as Jimmy Savile.'

She said the doctor operated on her at the hospital after a burns accident, and she then attended his follow-up clinics at a separate hospital.
Now 52, she recalled: 'He called me his “special patient”. I had to go and see him once every fortnight for cortisone injections under the skin.' But the doctor insisted he needed to 'massage' the fluid into her body in her groin area, she said.
She reported it to her teachers and her mother but said no one took her allegations seriously. The doctor accused by the woman has since died.

A second woman told the Mail she was abused by a Stoke Mandeville consultant paediatrician called Dr Michael Salmon, at his clinic on another site.

In 1990, Salmon was jailed for three years after admitting indecent assaults on two 13-year-old girls and a 16-year-old girl.

The woman told the Mail: 'I was so shocked but I didn't know what to do, and I never told anyone. But he had a Jim'll Fix It picture on his sideboard and he worked at Stoke Mandeville, so now I wonder if there was any connection with Savile.'

A third doctor has also been implicated in Leeds.

A spokesman for Stoke Mandeville said: 'We have been shocked and saddened to hear of the very serious allegations about Jimmy Savile dating back to the 1970s. We have no record of any complaints of this nature and would have taken swift and decisive action if this had formally been raised with us.'

The Crown Prosecution Service yesterday faced questions over why it let Savile off the hook three years ago despite a 'clear pattern' of claims against him. Keir Starmer QC announced a review of why four cases were dropped at the end of a two-year probe involving two police forces in 2009.

The Director of Public Prosecutions said he believed the right decision was taken and the internal inquiry will take place out of an 'abundance of caution'.

Beyond the hysterical media feeding frenzy surrounding the BBC, little has changed since I wrote about Jimmy Savile a couple of weeks ago. He’s still dead.

Of course, the BBC has serious questions to answer. But I have to admit I felt a twinge of sympathy for new Director-General George Entwistle when he was subjected to snide, grandstanding interrogation by self-important MPs this week.

He was evasive, and hasn’t properly explained his own role in screening two tributes to Savile when he knew that Newsnight had been investigating the abuse allegations.

Yet Entwistle didn’t deserve the contemptuous treatment he received from some members of the select committee. Trying to hold him responsible for behaviour at the BBC that happened when he was still at school is patently absurd.

While it is apparent that some people at the Beeb were complicit in covering up Savile’s crimes — and others may also have been involved in abusing minors — proving it could be impossible.

What concerns me is that the focus on the BBC is diverting attention from the far more serious aspect of this scandal.

That is the way in which vulnerable children were abused in state-funded institutions, which had a statutory duty of care towards them.

How the hell was Savile given the run of supposedly secure care homes and special schools, as well as Broadmoor and Stoke Mandeville hospitals?

The most chilling photo produced so far was Savile posing for pictures inside Broadmoor with the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe.

Say cheese, Jim. Big grin, Pete. Thumbs up, three sombreros.

Who thought it a good idea to give Savile access to Britain’s most notorious psychopath and serial killer? That name must be on file. ???

So must the identities of those who handed him the keys to the wards at Stoke Mandeville and allowed him unsupervised access to children in their care.

Other patients have come forward to complain that they were molested not just by Savile but by doctors, medical staff and social workers.

The lawyers are circling and the multi-million-pound claims for damages are being prepared.

Picking the fluff out of Auntie’s navel may be great sport. But don’t let’s lose sight of the bigger picture, which includes the inability of the police and the CPS to bring prosecutions against Savile when he was still alive.

This explosive, stomach-churning scandal is about much, much more than who knew what and when at the BBC.

He has compiled a dossier allegations for the Metropolitan Police, which is currently dealing with hundreds of allegations of abuse against Jimmy Savile.

Scotland Yard today said the number of the broadcaster's victims was 'fast approaching' 300, with 400 separate lines of inquiry.

Meanwhile 160 people alone have complained of abuse to the NSPCC since the scale of Savile's paedophilia was revealed.

But the scandal was widened yesterday when Mr Watson suggested a Number 10 insider was named in files connected to the conviction of a child porn smuggler in the early 1990s.
Writing on his blog Mr Watson said: 'I have no doubt the Met will take this seriously.'
He said he has written to Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe with more details of the case, which he said would 'obviously remain confidential'.

Mr Watson said there was a trail between the evidence used to convict a child abuser called Peter Righton in 1992, and No 10.
He told the Commons: ‘The evidence used to convict paedophile Peter Righton, if it still exists, contains clear intelligence of a widespread paedophile ring.
‘One of its members boasts of his links to a senior aide of a former prime minister who says he could smuggle indecent images of children from abroad.

‘The leads were not followed up, but if the file still exists I want to ensure that the Metropolitan Police secure the evidence, re-examine it and investigate clear intelligence suggesting a powerful paedophile network linked to Parliament and No 10.’
Mr Cameron said Mr Watson ‘raises a very difficult and complex case’ and he was ‘not entirely sure which former prime minister he is referring to’.

But he agreed to look at the case ‘very carefully and see what the Government can do’ to give Mr Watson the assurances he wanted.

In the Sunday Times she claimed she heard that Sir Peter, who was Mrs Thatcher’s parliamentary private secretary and deputy chairman of the party, had sex with 16-year-old boys when the age of consent was 21. Sir Peter died aged 51 in 1995.
However yesterday afternoon Mr Watson wrote on his blog: ‘I am not naming the person for obvious reasons but for clarity it is not former MP Peter Morrison.
‘This afternoon my office has been bombarded with calls regarding Morrison, I think because he was named by Edwina Currie at the weekend as having inappropriate sexual relations with teenage boys.’

Sexual abuse allegations against Jimmy Savile emerged after his death

Adults and children, including a boy of eight, were abused by Jimmy Savile.

Police and the NSPCC outlined offences by the late presenter at venues including 13 hospitals and a hospice.
Some 214 crimes were recorded across 28 police force areas, including 34 of rape or penetration, the report said.
The CPS apologised for missing the opportunity to prosecute Savile in 2009, while he was still alive.
The Metropolitan Police said the victims' accounts painted a "compelling picture of widespread sexual abuse by a predatory sex offender", and Cdr Peter Spindler, who is leading the investigation, said Savile had "groomed the nation".

The NSPCC said Savile had been one of the most prolific sex offenders in its 129-year history.

'Sincere Apology'

The former BBC presenter of Top Of The Pops and Jim'll Fix It, who also worked as a Radio 1 DJ and received a knighthood in 1990, died aged 84 in October 2011 - a year before the allegations were broadcast in an ITV documentary.
Revelations that Savile had sexually abused children prompted hundreds of victims to come forward, including those who said they were attacked on BBC premises and a number of other institutions.

NSPCC director of child protection advice and awareness Peter Watt said:

"The sheer scale of Savile's abuse over six decades simply beggars belief.
"He is without doubt one of the most prolific sex offenders we have ever come across and every number represents a victim that will never get justice now he is dead."

The Giving Victims a Voice report set out the findings of Operation Yewtree, which launched three months ago to investigate the Savile abuse claims.
The 30-page document detailed a number of findings, including:

Savile offended at 13 hospitals, including Great Ormond Street, with one offence recorded at Wheatfields Hospice in 1977
A total of 14 offences were recorded in relation to schools
Savile's youngest victim was an eight-year-old boy, and the oldest was a 47-year-old woman
The earliest allegation is from 1955 in Manchester and the last is from 2009
Offences were carried out at the BBC between 1965 and 2006, including at the last Top of the Pops recording
Peak offending took place between 1966 and 1976
A total of 450 people have made sexual abuse allegations against Savile since October - of whom 73% were under 18, with most aged 13 to 16
There is "no clear evidence" he operated in paedophile ring, although "whether he was part of an informal network" is still being investigated

In response to the report, the BBC said it was "appalled" some of the offences were committed on its premises and restated a "sincere apology to the victims of these crimes".

The report also revealed 16 offences were committed at;

Leeds General Infirmary between 1965-95
22 at Stoke Mandeville Hospital between 1965-88.

One offence was committed at each of the following hospitals -

Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital,
St James Leeds Hospital,
High Royds Psychiatric Hospital,
Dewsbury Hospital,
Wycombe General Hospital,
Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1971,
Ashworth Hospital,
Exeter Hospital,
Royal Portsmouth Hospital,
St Catherine's Hospital in Birkenhead,
Saxondale Mental Health.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he wanted to be able to assure NHS patients that it would be "much, much harder" for abuse on such a scale to happen again by establishing whether NHS procedures were to blame.
He told BBC Radio 4's World at One programme that the scale of the challenge for the NHS's investigation into Savile's abuse on its premises was "absolutely huge" because it would cover a period of about 40 years.
Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper called for "a proper overarching review led by child protection experts into why everyone failed to stop Savile and what should be done now".
"A myriad of small reviews and inquiries into how it could happen in different hospitals or the BBC are just not enough," she said.

The Crown Prosecution Service also published a review of a decision in 2009 not to charge Savile with sexual offences in relation to four complaints made to police in Surrey and Sussex.
It said further action might have been possible had "police and prosecutors taken a different approach", prompting director of public prosecutions Keir Starmer to apologise on behalf of the CPS and say the report represented a "watershed moment".

'Extremely Distressing'

Great Ormond Street Hospital called the report "extremely distressing", adding the allegation relating to the hospital was "not reported at the time and therefore neither the police nor GOSH hold any records relating to the matter".
Wheatfields Hospice said it was "appalled and dismayed" to hear the allegation against it and its "thoughts are with the individual involved and their family at this difficult time".

BBC media correspondent Torin Douglas said the main target for victims making compensation claims would be the Savile estate. The BBC could also be targeted, he added.

Operation Yewtree has three strands - claims against Savile, claims against Savile and others, and claims against others. The report marks the end of the investigation into claims against Savile.

The allegations against Savile prompted a series of investigations, including three at the BBC and another by the Department of Health into his role at Broadmoor.

The Dame Janet Smith List of Victims,

is looking into the culture and practices of the BBC while Savile was an employee, said it had now been contacted by more than 350 people. The investigation is ongoing.

More than 500 people have reportedly been abused by Jimmy Savile, new figures show, as shocking evidence emerged of how the pervert talked his way into the heart of government.

Details of his close relationship with those in power came as research showed that his youngest victim was just two years old.
The research by the NSPCC was commissioned by the BBC's Panorama as part of an investigation into Savile's links to government.

Whitehall officials referred to the predatory paedophile as ‘Doctor’ as they allowed him to intervene in a staff dispute at Broadmoor Hospital.

The DJ and Top of the Pops presenter even gained direct access to then health minister Edwina Currie, who suspected Savile of trying to ‘blackmail’ staff after discovering some were illicitly sub-letting hospital housing and fiddling overtime.

Confidential Department of Health documents have now revealed the full extent of Savile’s influence over the Berkshire hospital.
He first became involved through the League of Friends charity in the late 1960s and was later given his own set of keys and a house in the grounds.

In 1987 he was appointed by the Government to serve on the secure unit’s board and was paid £1,230 a month.

Despite having no medical qualifications, the entertainer was referred to as ‘Dr Jimmy Savile, OBE, KCSG, LLD’ in official documents. He secured unchecked access to patients, despite concerns from staff about his behaviour.

A year later, Mrs Currie made Savile the head of a task force addressing tensions between Broadmoor’s management and unions. A memo suggests his appointment was pushed by senior civil servants, who appear to have been ‘star-struck’ by him.

It adds that Savile was going through the hospital’s main departments like a ‘dose of salts’ and that he would be instrumental in solving the row with medical staff.

‘I would say he was one hundred per cent sincere and committed in his desire to improve the management of Broadmoor and the lives of its patients,’ the memo says.
‘But I doubt he’ll let anyone stand in his way, and he clearly doesn’t mind how many people get trampled underfoot in the process.’

Panorama quoted Mrs Currie as saying Savile told her some staff were sub-letting hospital housing and fiddling overtime claims. He planned to use the information to pressure the union to end an overtime ban.
Asked if this was blackmail, Mrs Currie said: ‘That sounds like blackmail to me. I made a note of it at the time, because I was so surprised.
‘If this meant that we broke the strike and could help the patients, then we had an issue of ends justifying means.’

The scale of Savile’s offending continues to grow and Thames Valley Police said it has received a further 16 complaints against him. Broadmoor Hospital is one of dozens under NHS investigation over the scandal, including Stoke Mandeville.

Peter Watt, of the NSPCC, said: ‘There’s no doubt that Savile is one of the most, if not the most, prolific sex offender that we at the NSPCC have ever come across … somebody who at his most prolific lost no opportunity to identify vulnerable victims and abuse them.’

The West London Mental Health NHS Trust, which now runs Broadmoor, said its governance is ‘much more robust’ than at the time of Savile’s involvement.

The ‘Chosen One’ aged 16

One victim said nurses laughed when she told them she had been sexually assaulted by Savile in a hospital basement.

So far, 103 victims have come forward to describe the abuse they suffered at Jimmy Saviles hands while in the care of the National Health Service

The woman, who was then a 16-year-old patient at Leeds General Infirmary, said Savile made her feel like the ‘chosen one’, taking her to the local shop and buying her sweets and magazines.

But she claimed that later, a hospital porter led her to an area where Savile was waiting behind a closed door.

‘He pulled me in immediately and started to kiss me with his tongue,’ she told the BBC.

One victim said nurses laughed when she told them she had been sexually assaulted by Savile in a hospital basement

‘At the same time his left hand went on to my right thigh under my dress.
‘There wasn’t time to draw breath, there wasn’t time to analyse even what’s happening here because it was seamless. . . And then he said you’ve got to go.’
The assault lasted no more than five or six minutes, she said.
The incident made her feel ‘dirty and ridiculously stupid’, but when she tried to tell nurses they started laughing, making her feel she couldn’t finish. Only her mother took her claims seriously.
But, she added, ‘everybody knew’ what was going on – yet staff, porters and patients at the hospital all accepted it.
The victim said that when she discovered the full extent of Savile’s abuse, she wished she had reported the harrowing encounter to police.

Terror at Broadmoor

A Broadmoor patient revealed how Savile repeatedly targeted his victims at the psychiatric hospital in the 1990s.
Staff often allowed him to sit unaccompanied in the day room, she said. On one occasion, while talking to her with his back to other patients, he put his hand on her leg and sexually assaulted her, speaking all the time.
She said she froze and felt guilty – but a member of staff later insisted she must have imagined the abuse.
Savile was able to assault her in the same way several times over a number of weeks. The cycle caused her ‘significant distress’, she told investigators.
Savile had a long association with Broadmoor hospital, having worked there as a volunteer in the 1970s and 1980s.

He was later given a central position in the administration and was allowed to personally select managers, it has been claimed. He had a set of keys and even living quarters on site.

Hurt herself in vain bid to escape his clutches

Another victim told of the ‘major and lasting impact’ of Savile’s abuse in the late 1970s, when she was less than ten years old.
The first time he attacked her, he picked her up from her house in a two-seater car – meaning that her family were forced to travel in a separate car rather than accompany the pair to Leeds General Infirmary, she said.
As they arrived at the hospital, Savile took her into a room with no windows. When her parents left, he kissed her several times.

She was targeted again six months later, when he picked her up in the same car to take her alone to another appointment.
By the third appointment, she was terrified of the entertainer.
To avoid the abuse, she said she deliberately hurt herself so badly that she needed to be treated at a different hospital.
But she couldn’t escape – for while she was recovering there, Savile visited her again.
The traumatic experience when she was just a child has left her scarred for life, the report found.
It states that she was only one of many victims at the Leeds hospital, including men, women,
-boys and girls, who ranged in age from five to 75.

The presenter used to sit with patients to watch himself appear on the popular music show, which was pre-recorded.
The victim, known in the report as Ms B, told investigators how on one occasion, he was watching the show with patients in front of a large sofa in the day room.

Staff were standing behind the sofa, with their view blocked by the furniture. The paedophile sat on the floor next to the victim.
Effectively hidden from sight, he placed his hand between her legs before assaulting her. The attack lasted for two to three minutes, she said.
But like many others, she felt unable to complain because staff were unsympathetic. She said she did not feel able to tell her story then or later, for fear of being punished as a troublemaker.
Savile presented the BBC show Top of the Pops, which had a largely teenage audience, from 1964 to 1984.
Throughout this period, he escaped punishment for the horrific abuse of young stars and fans. Singer Coleen Nolan has previously claimed that Savile invited her to come to a hotel when she was just 14 after she had recorded at the Top of the Pops studio.

The veteran entertainer, Australian Rolf Harris has been found guilty on all 12 charges of indecent assault at Southwark Crown Court, UK.

The 84-year-old has been convicted of attacks on four victims between 1968 and 1986, after the jury of six men and six women deliberated the case for more than 33 hours and into an eighth day.

During his trial, which opened on 9 May, prosecutors claimed that the entertainer was a “Jekyll and Hyde” character who had a dark side to his personality and used his fame to abuse under-age girls with impunity.

His conviction is the most high-profile of those achieved by officers from Scotland Yard as part of the sex crime investigation Operation Yewtree, set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile/BBC Pedo scandal.

Once regarded by a UK audience as a national treasure, Australian Harris had enjoyed years of success, bringing him a multi-million pound fortune and the opportunity to paint the Queen.

He remained impassive as the forewoman delivered the jury’s unanimous verdicts, while his daughter Bindi, wife Alwen and niece Jenny watched on from the public gallery.

Harris has now been released on bail until Friday, when he will be sentenced.

He was warned by Justice Sweeney that, given his conviction on all 12 counts, it was “inevitable” that there was the possibility he will face a jail term.
Seven of those 12 counts related to a single woman, who said Harris abused her from the age of 13 over the course of several years, starting while she was on holiday in Hawaii.

Another victim claimed Harris groped her when she was seven or eight after she went to get his autograph at a community centre near Portsmouth between 1968 and 1970.
She told the jury he aggressively assaulted her “out of nowhere” at the packed venue.

A third victim said Harris touched her bottom when she was waitressing at a celebrity event in Cambridge, either in 1975 or 1978.
She said she saw Harris “playing up to the crowd”, crouched on all fours barking at a dog, before he groped her.

The fourth victim, Tonya Lee, who has waived her right to anonymity, said she was abused while on a tour of the UK with an Australian youth theatre group in 1986.

The aspiring theatre star, then 15, said she “felt disgusting” after Harris groped her when he went for dinner with the group at a London pub.

A mural painted by convicted paedophile Rolf Harris at a Melbourne hardware store in 1990 has been painted over in red.

The store owner of Penhalluriack's Building Supplies asked a survivor of sexual abuse to do the honours and paint over the mural at his Caulfield store, Melbourne's south-east, on Monday.

The mural showed Harris's smiling head on the body of a kangaroo, which carried a can of paint with the catch phrase 'Trust British Paints - Sure Can!'. It was then signed 'Rolf Harris 1990'.

'Instead he treated them immorally, and, according to the judge, without remorse.

'His reputation, and his power, has gone [and] it is my intention to remove all signs of the man from my business.'

Former top judge Baroness Butler-Sloss is to lead the wide-ranging inquiry into child sex abuse.
She will lead the panel of experts investigating allegations that politicians, the police, celebrities, the BBC, the NHS and the Church conspired to cover-up abuse over several decades.

Home Secretary Theresa May said the inquiry would examine whether a string of organisations failed in their ‘duty of care’ to protect children from harm.

For months MPs from all parties had called for an independent inquiry to be set up.
Yesterday, Mrs May finally bowed to pressure and said she was now willing to establish an inquiry panel, based on the Hillsborough Inquiry, which could start more quickly than a full-scale public inquiry.
If the panel members - who are yet to be appointed - demands it, ministers could convert it to a public inquiry at a later date.

However, the scale of the task means it is 'not likely' to report in full before the general election in May 2015.

Today it was announced that the panel will be chaired by Baroness Butler-Sloss, a former president of the Family Division of the High Court who chaired the Cleveland Child Abuse Inquiry.

Baroness Butler-Sloss said: ‘I'm honoured to have been invited to lead this inquiry. The next step is to appoint the panel and agree the terms of reference. ‘We will begin this important work as soon as possible.’

The wide-ranging probe was ordered amid mounting public concern at organisations failing to protect children.
It includes years of attacks carried out by celebrities including Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris, as well as the systematic abuse of vulnerable girls in areas including Derby, Rochdale and Oxford.

Mrs May said: ‘In recent years, we have seen appalling cases of organised and persistent child sex abuse that have exposed serious failings by public bodies and important institutions.
‘That is why the government has established an independent panel of experts to consider whether these organisations have taken seriously their duty of care to protect children from sexual abuse.’

Details of the scope of the inquiry will be agreed when all of the members of the panel have been appointed.
The government has committed to 'maximum transparency' to release all reports, reviews and files are made available to the panel.

It could include reports from Special Branch, intelligence services and submissions sent to Prime Ministers.

Mrs May said it would ensure that where there has been a failure to protect children from abuse 'we will expose it and we will learn from it'.

A 67-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of historical child abuse following an investigation into claims of a paedophile ring with links to Downing Street.
The unnamed suspect was held in Dorset yesterday and questioned at a local police station before being released last night, Scotland Yard said.
The arrest was part of an inquiry named Operation Brancaster, which was set up after MP Tom Watson claimed there was a child abuse group which had with links to Number 10 Downing Street.

In 2012, he used Prime Minister's Questions to claim that a file of evidence used to convict a man called Peter Righton of importing child pornography in 1992 contained 'clear intelligence' of a paedophile gang.
He also claimed that a member of the group had bragged about links with a senior aide to a former Prime Minister.
Mr Watson wrote to Scotland Yard about the case, and the force later launched a number of separate criminal investigations after assessing the information.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said:

'A 67-year-old man has been arrested this morning, Tuesday, 14 October, at an address in Dorset on suspicion of historical child abuse offences.
'He was taken into custody locally and has now been released on police bail to a date in late November pending further inquiries.
'This arrest falls under a strand called Operation Brancaster, which was originally assessed as part of Operation Fairbank, and subsequently reached the criminal threshold.'

Police have arrested the suspected paedophiles in Britain and Northern Ireland

A major sex crime crackdown has led to the arrest of 660 suspected paedophiles across Britain, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has said.

The six-month operation targeted internet users who access child abuse images but has already led to charges for serious sexual assault.
Among the several hundred people arrested across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are workers who had access to children through their jobs and had no previous contact with police.

The massive investigation, involving 45 police forces, led to hundreds of children being "safeguarded", the NCA said.
It stressed that none of those arrested is a serving or former MP or member of the Government.

The NCA said suspects include doctors, teachers, Scout leaders, care workers and former police officers. In total, only 39 registered sex offenders are among those arrested.

Officers have searched 833 properties and examined 9,172 computers, phones and hard drives.
The NCA said it built up "intelligence packages" on suspects and sent them to police forces across Britain.

NCA deputy director general Phil Gormley said the crackdown, the biggest ever operation of its kind, involved alleged paedophiles who used the so-called "dark web" as well as traditional internet access.
The "dark web" is internet content that is not listed by normal search engines. Users will often use payment methods such as virtual currencies to help avoid detection.

The 431 children who were safeguarded were in the "care, custody or control" of the suspects, and included 127 who were deemed to be at immediate risk of harm.

Mr Gormley said he was "profoundly disappointed" that so many suspects had been arrested over this type of crime, and said a harder look needs to be taken at the high numbers of people accessing child abuse images.
He said:

"The alternative is not to look under the stone, and we cannot afford not to look under this stone."

Claire Lilley, head of online safety at the NSPCC, said:

"This is an important two-pronged operation which has rescued children from abuse and also identified many previously unknown sex offenders. Direct action like this sends a strong message to those who subject children to harrowing sexual assaults that they can and will be traced and prosecuted.
"But law enforcement agencies alone cannot deal with the vast problem of illegal images which continue to flood the market. Industry has to find inventive ways of blocking the flow of such horrendous pictures which are only produced through the suffering of defenceless children - many of who are not even old enough to go to school.
"So while this operation must be rightly applauded we should view it as yet another warning sign that far more needs to be done if we are to stem the sordid trade in these images, which are often used by those who go on to abuse children."

The sex offender - jailed for a series of assaults on young girls over an 18-year period - had planned on fleeing the UK to settle in Spain once he is set free.

However, probation officers will stand in his way, with the terms of his release requiring him to report to police regularly - and banning him from travelling abroad for 30 months.

A source said, 'Hall thought that he would be able to slip quietly out of the country and live a life of quiet relaxation in the sun.

'That won't happen because he must be available to probation officers and police during the remaining period of his sentence, which is effectively served on the outside in the UK.'

Hall, 85, was jailed for only 30 months in 2013 after admitting 14 counts against girls aged from nine to 17 between 1967 and 1985.

In May last year, the former It's a Knockout host was sentenced to another two years and six months in prison for indecently assaulting an under-age girl.

At the same time, he was cleared of 15 rape charges and four indecent assaults.

Hall's lawyers previously said the family are 'fully supportive' of the former BBC presenter.

Last month it was revealed his wife Hazel has moved out of the couple's £1.2million mansion after failing to sell it.

Mrs Hall was spotted leaving the four-bedroom detached property after telling friends she 'can't stand living there any longer'.

Savile reads a letter saying: “It do say here, dear Jimmy, I have always wanted to see Rolf Harris doing one of his paintings, please could you fix it for me. Love, Lynn.”

The camera then cuts to Savile and Harris on stage with the nervous-looking girl.

Savile says: “You see this young lady, sir? She wishes that she could help you with one of your paintings, do you think I may leave her in your charge?”

Harris replies: “Safely leave her in my capable hands here...”

Harris then starts painting and tells Lynn: “Enjoying it so far? Give them a big smile because they only see the back of your head otherwise, you see?”

After the drawing is finished, Savile returns and Harris says: “She is anxious to run away.

Savile replies: “She is, I’ve got fast hold of her here...” Harris says: “You stay here and enjoy it, girl.”

Then huge TV stars, the pair also appeared side by side in 1992 on Rolf’s Cartoon Show and attended a fete at Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire, touring a ward together.

The Jim’ll Fix It footage is part of new ITV documentary Rolf Harris: Hiding In Plain Sight. There is no suggestion Lynn was abused.

The programme shows how Harris became a national treasure, who painted the Queen’s portrait in Buckingham Palace, but allegedly humiliated girls and sexually assaulted women for decades.

It includes the story of a woman known in court as Victim A, who was a family friend and was instrumental in gaining a conviction against the TV entertainer in 2014.

The grooming of Harris’ daughter Bindi’s childhood friend from her early teens was key evidence that led to his downfall.

Therapist Chip Somers, speaking on behalf of Victim A for the first time, says of her claims: “In the second half of the 1990s, a woman came looking for help for an alcohol problem. And it became apparent there was a huge secret that she was holding on to.

“She was having an enormous amount of difficulty talking about.

“She had experienced prolonged instances of sexual abuse. And she has given me permission to talk about those experiences.

“She said ‘This person is very well-known, I’ve been part of the family for some time and I don’t know whether or not I should say the name’. I reassured her and she said ‘it is Rolf Harris’.

“She started to experience innocent physical contact. There was a specific point when it changed completely from anything that could be perceived as innocent.

“These things were happening both in his home, in her home, becoming more frequent, and she is also quite clearly told, ‘This is something that you cannot talk about. Do not tell anybody about this. This is our little secret. I am a powerful person, I have money, so tread carefully’.

“She was having to carry this incredible secret, this incredible sense of guilt and disgust and hatred.”

A number of other women make claims of “degrading and awful” treatment by Harris over decades.

They have waived their right to anonymity to describe how his alleged behaviour impacted on them, and the pressures that finally forced them to come forward to testify in court.

Karen Gardner, who met Harris on TV show Star Games in 1977 when she was 16, says he assaulted her three times in the space of 35 minutes.

She tells the programme: “He said something, which still makes me feel sick now. He said to me, ‘You’re irresistible.’ I was 16. He was 48. He was 10 years older than my dad.”

Harris was acquitted of assaulting Ms Gardner, now a BBC journalist, after the jury failed to reach a verdict.

Former family friend Chris Brosnan recalls he once pulled over his car and shouted at Harris when he remarked that he wanted to sleep with young schoolgirls they had driven past.

He also remembers noticing resentment from daughter Bindi towards Harris. Brosnan, known to the family as Bear, says: “I was privy to far more predatory behaviour than a lot of other people. There was this shadow that began to creep in more and more and more.

“I ended up promoting Rolf as an artist as well as playing in the band... being somebody organising shows.

“I started to notice resentment from Bindi towards her dad. She said it was to do with his behaviour toward one of her friends, something that her friend had revealed to her.

“And to tell you the truth I didn’t want to expand on it, I didn’t want to say ‘well what do you mean?’ I knew what she meant.

“I actually took it up with Rolf and he looked at me, cut me off, and he said ‘Bear, we’ve all made mistakes in life. And I’ve made some pretty big mistakes and let’s just leave it there’.”

In June 2014, Harris was found guilty of 12 counts of indecently assaulting four girls in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

In court, Bindi Harris admitted learning about her father and Victim A in the late 1990s, but claimed Victim A was 18 and the relationship was consensual.

Harris was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault, one of which was later overturned. He was released in May 2017 after serving three years of a five-year, nine-month sentence.

He now lives in Berkshire with his wife of 64 years, Alwen Hughes, who has Alzheimer’s disease. Last October he was “gravely sick” according to friends and neighbours.

Harris, now 93, has not spoken out publicly since his release but provided a statement for a book last year saying he was “convicted of offences I did not commit”. The Mirror approached his representative for comment.

Convicted paedophile Rolf Harris has died aged 93, it has been announced today.

The disgraced TV presenter's death was confirmed by a registrar at Maidenhead Town Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

Harris “died peacefully surrounded by family and friends and has now been laid to rest”, his family said in a statement.

According to his death certificate, Harris died of neck cancer and “frailty of old age” at his home in Bray, Berkshire, on May 10. His death was registered by his former PA Lisa Ratcliff on Tuesday.

The final pictures of Harris in public showed the paedophile walking with cane as he battled cancer, with the dad-of-one seen using a cane as he struggled to walk after getting out of a vehicle in Berkshire in 2020.

His funeral has already taken place, with a fan of Harris' writing on Facebook: "The family have confirmed the very sad news that our much-loved Rolf recently passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends. He has now been laid to rest. They would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone here for their continued love and support."

Three neighbours on the estate where Harris lived in Bray, Berks, told the Mirror he had died earlier this month. A fourth said he had seen a sudden influx of carers into Harris' mansion.

A residents’ WhatsApp group for members of the estate’s Fisheries Residents’ Association, seen by the Mirror, wished Rolf “RIP” in messages.

One neighbour told the Mirror: “People around here were very conscious of what happened last time (when the Mirror revealed Rolf had walked into a local schoolyard) so they wanted it to remain quiet until all the members of his family and close friends learned about it.”

Lostprophets musician and convicted sex offender Ian Watkins has been rushed to hospital.

Sources say the disgraced singer, 46, was set upon by fellow inmates inside HMP Wakefield, where he is serving a 29-year sentence for multiple sex crimes, including offences against young children and babies.

A source said: “He was found by officers after being held hostage and battered on Saturday morning. He’s in a life-threatening condition and there are fears he could die. If he survives, he’ll have been very lucky.”

It is understood Watkins was taken hostage by three other inmates shortly after 9am on Saturday morning. He is said to have suffered stab wounds and beatings before eventually being freed by prison officers around six hours later.

Witnesses said paramedics worked to save his life in an ambulance outside the jail. A Prison Service spokesperson said: “Police are investigating an incident which took place on Saturday at HMP Wakefield. We are unable to comment further while the police investigate.”

Watkins found fame and fortune as frontman for the rock band Lost Prophets until he was unmasked as a drug-crazed predatory paedophile in 2013. He shocked the rock world after pleading guilty to the attempted rape of a baby and 10 other sex offences after preying on fans, including two who offered up their babies to be abused by their idol. Watkins was described in court as a “determined and committed paedophile”.

The court heard he plotted to abuse two babies with their own mothers in text and internet messages in which he spoke of his desire to “cross the line” and to intoxicate one young victim by blowing crystal meth smoke into the child’s face. And the judge heard details of a sickening 17-minute video shot in a London hotel room which showed Watkins perform a sex act on a child.

In 2013, the Welsh native pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court to 13 child sex offences. He also admitted to the rape and sexual assault of a child who was under the age of 13. Watkins also admitted conspiring to rape a child, three counts of sexual assault involving children, seven involving taking, making or possessing indecent images of children and one of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving a sex act on an animal.

Sentencing Mr Justice Royce said the case broke 'new ground' and 'plunged into new depths of depravity'. He said Watkins had a 'corrupting influence' and had shown a 'complete lack of remorse'. He added Watkins posed a significant risk to the public in particular to women with young children.

Watkins also admitted conspiring to rape a child, three counts of sexual assault involving children, seven involving taking, making or possessing indecent images of children and one of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving a sex act on an animal.

The musician was later handed an extra 10 months after he was discovered to have a mobile phone in his possession while behind bars. Initially, he denied having a three-inch GSTAR phone in his cell. As the verdict was read out, Watkins claimed that "known murderers" in his prison told him to keep an eye on the phone after chucking it on his bed.

During the hearing, Judge Rodney Jameson QC said: "I am very conscious of the fact you are serving a very long time and you will be well into middle age by the time you are released. The fact of the matter is if there is not an appreciable penalty for having had a mobile phone in these circumstances then of course you would draw from that the lesson you could have another one and that is not a position I would want to encourage."

A 'depraved' paedophile Radio 1 DJ who was a friend of Jimmy Savile has died in prison.

Chris Denning was serving two 13 year prison sentences after being convicted of sex offences against boys as young as eight. His death at the age of 81 in hospital from diabetes last year has only just been disclosed in a prison watchdog report into his care in prison. He was being held at HMP Bedford at the time of his death last June.

Denning found fame in the 1960s as a BBC DJ and once held a party in the home of notorious paedophile Jimmy Savile In addition to using his fame and showbiz connections to dazzle his child victims, he opened a string of computer game shops to lure boys for abuse.

Denning was one of the original Radio 1 DJs in the 1960s

Denning hosted shows on Radio Luxembourg, where he interviewed The Beatles, then hosted shows with Kenny Everett for the BBC. He was one of the founding DJs on BBC Radio 1 and was the first voice ever to speak on BBC2.

He left the BBC for Decca Records, then moved to Bell Records, where he helped to launch the careers of paedophile Gary Glitter and the Bay City Rollers. Their manager, Tom Paton, was convicted of gross indecency involving boys aged 16 and 17 and is alleged to have been a paedophile.

But in the 1970s Denning was exposed as a sex offender. He was convicted of gross indecency in 1974. In 1988, he was jailed for three years for indecent assault and possessing indecent images. In 1996, he was prosecuted for publishing indecent articles.

Despite his numerous convictions, he was invited in 1997 to participate in a 30-year anniversary reunion for BBC Radio 1, alongside Terry Wogan, Tony Blackburn and John Peel. It was later revealed that he was already a convicted sex offender in Europe before he ever found fame in the UK.

He was prosecuted in 1959 in Germany for circulating pornographic images. In the late 1990s, Denning relocated to Prague, where he was accused of running a paedophile ring.

Denning had photographed himself abusing boys he picked up from amusement arcades and swimming pools. He represented himself in that case and delivered a record 44-hour closing argument, which only ended when the judge cut him off.

He was convicted of abusing boys under 15 and jailed. In 2001, it was announced that police were seeking to extradite Denning from the Czech Republic to question him under Operation Arundel – the investigation into paedophile offences linked to the Walton Hop – a disco for teenagers.

That was the operation that saw former DJ Jonathan King convicted of abusing boys. The extradition failed and Denning went on the run after his Prague sentence ended, first settling in Slovakia. In 2005, The Sun newspaper tracked him down in Austria, which promptly deported him to England.

The following year, at Kingston Crown Court, he admitted five charges of abusing boys under 16 and was jailed for four years. After the Kingston case, Denning was extradited to Slovakia and sentenced to five years for producing indecent images of children.

The former police detective who exposed Jimmy Savile a decade ago says that he is now working on bringing down another “very significant” and “untouchable” sex offender.

Mark Williams-Thomas revealed that former television host and radio personality Savile was a prolific paedophile in his award-winning film in October 2012. The documentary shook the entertainment industry, with the five women who spoke of suffering sexual abuse at the late DJ's hands followed by many more following its broadcast.

The revelations prompted the Met Police to launch Operation Yewtree, which led to the arrests of 19 people and eventual imprisonment of seven of them. Retired detective and child protection expert Williams-Thomas has claimed that he has a similar bombshell about another high-profile person.

Speaking to the i last year, he said: “There are still people out there who are untouchable. There is one very significant person who I've done everything to try and get prosecuted because he is clearly a child sex offender.

To date the CPS won't prosecute.

"The police and I have tried really hard to get there. He will die in due course and then the floodgates will open in the same way they did with Savile. That's not right. But justice takes many different forms. The truth is no broadcaster would have done a programme about Savile when he was alive - we live in a society where there are some people you can't take on and that's really sad.”

Williams-Thomas did not give any details away about who this "significant person" was. However, he hinted that one way in which these types of cases could be made less risky for prosecutors would be if victims gave up their right to anonymity.

He explained: “I've seen the value of lifting anonymity for victims to come forward. It's one of the reasons the CPS didn't have evidence to prosecute Savile when he was alive.

"The media plays a vital role in getting victims to come forward by publicising names, but they have to consider the impact on the accused because there is no more abhorrent crime than child sex abuse.” The CPS has been approached for comment.

He was driven away in an unmarked people carrier without commenting. He has previously denied allegations he was involved in child sex abuse with Savile. He was drawn into the scandal after Karin Ward, a former pupil at Duncroft approved school for girls in Surrey, told the BBC last year that she had seen Glitter having sex with a schoolgirl in Savile's BBC dressing room while Savile and several other people were there. Glitter is a convicted paedophile. He was jailed for four months in the UK in 1999 for downloading child porn, and in 2006 for child sex offences in Vietnam where he served two-and-a-half years in prison. Glitter always maintained he was innocent of the charges. The corporation cancelled plans to broadcast a Newsnight expose of Savile's sex crimes last year, which included testimony from Ward. Lord Patten, chairman of the BBC Trust, has apologised unreservedly to the abused women who spoke to Newsnight but did not have their stories told. He said there would be "no covering our backs" in the BBC's investigation of the abuse scandal. "Can it really be the case that no one knew what he was doing?" he asked in an article for the Mail on Sunday. "Did some turn a blind eye to criminality? The editor of Newsnight, Peter Rippon, has already stood aside and on Sunday it was claimed that the BBC's former director general, Mark Thompson, must have known about sex abuse allegations against Savile because they were raised with his office by journalists earlier this year. In May the BBC was asked by the Sunday Times, under the Freedom of Information Act, to reveal what it knew about exchanges between BBC bosses – including Thompson – about Savile and the Newsnight investigation as well as any contact the BBC had with police over claims that Savile "sexually molested minors on BBC premises in the 1970s". When it refused to answer, a reporter called Thompson's office and asked to speak to him about the claims. Thompson has repeatedly denied having any personal knowledge of the allegations. A spokesman for Thompson, who takes over as chief executive of the New York Times next month, said he was on holiday at the time and "this brief conversation was not relayed to him, either then or subsequently". In September, ITV separately emailed the BBC with detailed questions about the findings of its own investigation based on interviews with 10 victims. The broadcaster confirmed the note was forwarded to Thompson's office, but a spokesman for Thompson said the former director general does "not recall being briefed and took no part in the response to the email". But the Mountaineering Council of Scotland said it had had no further contact since before the scandal broke. A spokeswoman for the trust said all funds would be distributed to other charities but details over assets such as the cottage 'are still being worked out at present.' It came as it was alleged two BBC staff may have been carrying out vile sex crimes on the same scale as Jimmy Savile. Bosses at the corporation have passed dossiers on the pair's alleged behaviour - who may still be working at the organisation - to police. 'I went into the studio and standing with his back to me was Jimmy Savile with about half a dozen girls with him. They were probably 12 or 13,' he said. 'They were about to go on set so I decided I would speak to Savile later but before I could leave he squeezed the bottom of the little girl to his right who he had his arm around. 'The thing that’s always stayed with me was the look on her face, it wasn’t quite horror but it was hard to describe. 'It was haunting, it has haunted me for 20 years, even since then whenever I have heard Savile’s name that’s the picture that comes in to my mind. 'I raised the issue with a manager, who said that the girl must have been a relative to Savile and was just being friendly and I accepted that. 'I mentioned it to other people in the industry and at the BBC and I was laughed at because they all said, ‘Don’t you know that Savile likes them young?’ I felt a bit of a fool.' An ITV spokesman said: 'We will be speaking to Mr Hardwick as a matter of priority with a view to establishing the details relating to the serious allegation he makes and will take whatever action is appropriate.' The Trust chairman admitted that he did not read press reports earlier this year about the scrapping of a Newsnight film exposing Savile, but denied charges that he was devoting too little time to the job of heading the BBC’s regulator because of his other interests. He said that BBC director general George Entwistle had faced a 'baptism of fire' after taking up the job in September, as the corporation was engulfed by a 'tsunami of filth' within weeks of his appointment. Asked about Mr Entwistle’s widely-criticised appearance before the Commons Culture Committee earlier this week, Lord Patten did not leap to the defence of his performance, but said that even 'a combination of Benjamin Disraeli and Mr Gladstone' would have had a difficult job dealing with the hearing. Lord Patten confirmed that he had offered to join Mr Entwistle in front of the committee of MPs, but was turned down. And he appeared to suggest that it was him who insisted on inaccuracies about the Newsnight investigation in a blog by editor Peter Rippon being corrected. He agreed that it was 'wrong' for a BBC executive to rely on the misleading information when writing to Conservative chairman Grant Shapps ahead of his appearance to discuss the Savile case on BBC1’s Question Time. And he said the terms used in the letter were 'unfortunate'. Mr Shapps has complained to the BBC Trust about the letter from BBC head of public affairs Julia Ockenden. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s World at One, Lord Patten said: 'Whatever the other questions we get asked and the other considerations, our main concern has to be for the victims of abuse and worse - men as well as women, but mostly women, who have been marooned for years, trying to tell their stories and not being believed - including, it seems, by the BBC. 'We have to deal with the terrible damage to the reputation of the BBC, which has hitherto been a national institution which people have trusted. 'The way of getting at this issue is by pursuing the inquiries which have been set up - independent inquiries led by people of huge integrity. 'Whatever the perfectly legitimate questions people ask about other things, my main concern has to be to get to the bottom of what has happened and be open about it as soon as we can.' Lord Patten also said it was important to remember that 'the BBC is independent, it is answerable to licence fee-payers, it is not an agent of the Government'. And he stressed that the BBC Trust was not involved in the editorial decisions made by the broadcaster: 'We don't have any executive responsibility over the BBC, we are the strategic authority, we have the obligation to hold the BBC to account for complying with the law, with statutory regulations and with our objectives for programme quality. 'One reason we don't interfere with editorial decisions is we have to deal with complaints which may be made about those editorial decisions.' A senior Government minister has now said he cannot see 'any merit' in holding a full independent inquiry into Jimmy Savile scandal. Commons leader Andrew Lansley said investigations by the police and the independent probes commissioned by the BBC and NHS should be allowed to run their course. Labour said the BBC still had 'serious questions to answer' following director-general George Entwistle’s “unsatisfactory” appearance in front of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee. But answering questions in the Commons, Mr Lansley said: “There are inquiries being undertaken by the police, of course, as a criminal investigation; by Kate Lampard on behalf of the NHS and appointed by the BBC two inquiries by Nick Pollard and by Dame Janet Smith. 'All of those are independent and I see no reason for us at this stage to think that there would be any merit in seeking to overturn those inquiries which are making progress but simply to make sure, which I know they will, that they all respect and understand that the police’s criminal investigation must take precedence.' Police investigating the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal are dealing with around 300 alleged victims, Scotland Yard revealed today. Commander Peter Spindler said officers are following more than 400 lines of inquiry linked to the victims, of whom all except two are women. He said investigators have so far spoken to 130 people who have come forward, and 114 allegations of crime have emerged. Officers are using a 'triage' approach, first making contact with victims by phone to get initial details of their allegations, Mr Spindler said. He told reporters that most of the allegations are linked to Savile, but some involve others who may have acted with him. The inquiry will be a 'watershed' moment in the investigation of child abuse, he said, adding nobody has yet been arrested or interviewed under caution as yet, but the force is 'preparing an arrest strategy;. 'We are trying to make contact with as many victims as quickly as we can. We are doing it initially by telephone but some of those telephone contacts are taking up to four hours. 'This may be the first time that some people have actually spoken in any detail, and we don't underestimate how significant an event it is for them to disclose sexual abuse.' So far, the NSPCC has had 439 calls about sexual abuse in the past three weeks, a 60 per cent rise on what they would normally receive. Two out of five have been referred to social services and the police. As the list of his victims grew, a former Stoke Mandeville nurse yesterday waived her anonymity to tell how Savile assaulted her in her bedroom, while a hospital volunteer said the star raped her while wearing a 'Sex instructor, first lesson free' T-shirt. Former nurse Helen Wakeling said Savile shoved her on to a bed and tried to molest her. Mrs Wakeling, 59, of South West London, said: 'One afternoon in 1973, I came off duty at about 4.30 and bumped into Jimmy Savile and I invited him round to the nurses' quarters for a cup of tea. I made him tea in my room, and the next thing I know he pushed me on to the bed and jumped on top of me. 'I was so shocked, but I was 20 and a Londoner and I just said to him, “What do you think you're doing?” 'He was trying to grope me, but I shouted at him and pushed him off. He stood up and said he was “only joking”, but obviously he wasn't.' There are already accusations Savile had at least one accomplice at the BBC, and at Top of the Pops, he allegedly ran a 'gang of four' – staff including a cameraman who were part of the paedophile scandal. One woman said her Stoke Mandeville doctor sexually abused her every fortnight for four years from the age of 14. She said: 'There is no doubt in my mind there was a sex abuse ring operating at Stoke Mandeville. It is no coincidence that this man was doing the same thing as Jimmy Savile.' She said the doctor operated on her at the hospital after a burns accident, and she then attended his follow-up clinics at a separate hospital. Now 52, she recalled: 'He called me his “special patient”. I had to go and see him once every fortnight for cortisone injections under the skin.' But the doctor insisted he needed to 'massage' the fluid into her body in her groin area, she said. She reported it to her teachers and her mother but said no one took her allegations seriously. The doctor accused by the woman has since died. A second woman told the Mail she was abused by a Stoke Mandeville consultant paediatrician called Dr Michael Salmon, at his clinic on another site. In 1990, Salmon was jailed for three years after admitting indecent assaults on two 13-year-old girls and a 16-year-old girl. The woman told the Mail: 'I was so shocked but I didn't know what to do, and I never told anyone. But he had a Jim'll Fix It picture on his sideboard and he worked at Stoke Mandeville, so now I wonder if there was any connection with Savile.' A third doctor has also been implicated in Leeds. A spokesman for Stoke Mandeville said: 'We have been shocked and saddened to hear of the very serious allegations about Jimmy Savile dating back to the 1970s. We have no record of any complaints of this nature and would have taken swift and decisive action if this had formally been raised with us.' The Crown Prosecution Service yesterday faced questions over why it let Savile off the hook three years ago despite a 'clear pattern' of claims against him. Keir Starmer QC announced a review of why four cases were dropped at the end of a two-year probe involving two police forces in 2009. Daily Mail UK, 26 October 2012 Given free reign: Savile Beyond the hysterical media feeding frenzy surrounding the BBC, little has changed since I wrote about Jimmy Savile a couple of weeks ago. He’s still dead. Of course, the BBC has serious questions to answer. But I have to admit I felt a twinge of sympathy for new Director-General George Entwistle when he was subjected to snide, grandstanding interrogation by self-important MPs this week. He was evasive, and hasn’t properly explained his own role in screening two tributes to Savile when he knew that Newsnight had been investigating the abuse allegations. Yet Entwistle didn’t deserve the contemptuous treatment he received from some members of the select committee. Trying to hold him responsible for behaviour at the BBC that happened when he was still at school is patently absurd. While it is apparent that some people at the Beeb were complicit in covering up Savile’s crimes — and others may also have been involved in abusing minors — proving it could be impossible. What concerns me is that the focus on the BBC is diverting attention from the far more serious aspect of this scandal. That is the way in which vulnerable children were abused in state-funded institutions, which had a statutory duty of care towards them. How the hell was Savile given the run of supposedly secure care homes and special schools, as well as Broadmoor and Stoke Mandeville hospitals? The most chilling photo produced so far was Savile posing for pictures inside Broadmoor with the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe. Say cheese, Jim. Big grin, Pete. Thumbs up, three sombreros. Posed with Savile: Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper Who thought it a good idea to give Savile access to Britain’s most notorious psychopath and serial killer? That name must be on file. ??? So must the identities of those who handed him the keys to the wards at Stoke Mandeville and allowed him unsupervised access to children in their care. Other patients have come forward to complain that they were molested not just by Savile but by doctors, medical staff and social workers. The lawyers are circling and the multi-million-pound claims for damages are being prepared. Picking the fluff out of Auntie’s navel may be great sport. But don’t let’s lose sight of the bigger picture, which includes the inability of the police and the CPS to bring prosecutions against Savile when he was still alive. But the scandal was widened yesterday when Mr Watson suggested a Number 10 insider was named in files connected to the conviction of a child porn smuggler in the early 1990s. Writing on his blog Mr Watson said: 'I have no doubt the Met will take this seriously.' He said he has written to Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe with more details of the case, which he said would 'obviously remain confidential'. Mr Watson said there was a trail between the evidence used to convict a child abuser called Peter Righton in 1992, and No 10. View a NSPCC report detailing allegations over 50 years Police and the NSPCC outlined offences by the late presenter at venues including 13 hospitals and a hospice. Some 214 crimes were recorded across 28 police force areas, including 34 of rape or penetration, the report said. The CPS apologised for missing the opportunity to prosecute Savile in 2009, while he was still alive. The Metropolitan Police said the victims' accounts painted a "compelling picture of widespread sexual abuse by a predatory sex offender", and Cdr Peter Spindler, who is leading the investigation, said Savile had "groomed the nation". The NSPCC said Savile had been one of the most prolific sex offenders in its 129-year history. 'Sincere Apology' The former BBC presenter of Top Of The Pops and Jim'll Fix It, who also worked as a Radio 1 DJ and received a knighthood in 1990, died aged 84 in October 2011 - a year before the allegations were broadcast in an ITV documentary. Revelations that Savile had sexually abused children prompted hundreds of victims to come forward, including those who said they were attacked on BBC premises and a number of other institutions. NSPCC director of child protection advice and awareness Peter Watt said: "The sheer scale of Savile's abuse over six decades simply beggars belief. "He is without doubt one of the most prolific sex offenders we have ever come across and every number represents a victim that will never get justice now he is dead." The Giving Victims a Voice report set out the findings of Operation Yewtree, which launched three months ago to investigate the Savile abuse claims. The 30-page document detailed a number of findings, including: Savile offended at 13 hospitals, including Great Ormond Street, with one offence recorded at Wheatfields Hospice in 1977 A total of 14 offences were recorded in relation to schools Savile's youngest victim was an eight-year-old boy, and the oldest was a 47-year-old woman The earliest allegation is from 1955 in Manchester and the last is from 2009 Offences were carried out at the BBC between 1965 and 2006, including at the last Top of the Pops recording Peak offending took place between 1966 and 1976 A total of 450 people have made sexual abuse allegations against Savile since October - of whom 73% were under 18, with most aged 13 to 16 There is "no clear evidence" he operated in paedophile ring, although "whether he was part of an informal network" is still being investigated In response to the report, the BBC said it was "appalled" some of the offences were committed on its premises and restated a "sincere apology to the victims of these crimes". The report also revealed 16 offences were committed at; Leeds General Infirmary between 1965-95 22 at Stoke Mandeville Hospital between 1965-88. One offence was committed at each of the following hospitals - Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital, St James Leeds Hospital, High Royds Psychiatric Hospital, Dewsbury Hospital, Wycombe General Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1971, Ashworth Hospital, Exeter Hospital, Royal Portsmouth Hospital, St Catherine's Hospital in Birkenhead, Saxondale Mental Health. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he wanted to be able to assure NHS patients that it would be "much, much harder" for abuse on such a scale to happen again by establishing whether NHS procedures were to blame. He told BBC Radio 4's World at One programme that the scale of the challenge for the NHS's investigation into Savile's abuse on its premises was "absolutely huge" because it would cover a period of about 40 years. Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper called for "a proper overarching review led by child protection experts into why everyone failed to stop Savile and what should be done now". "A myriad of small reviews and inquiries into how it could happen in different hospitals or the BBC are just not enough," she said. The Crown Prosecution Service also published a review of a decision in 2009 not to charge Savile with sexual offences in relation to four complaints made to police in Surrey and Sussex. It said further action might have been possible had "police and prosecutors taken a different approach", prompting director of public prosecutions Keir Starmer to apologise on behalf of the CPS and say the report represented a "watershed moment". Deborah Cogger describes being abused by Savile at the age of 14 'Extremely Distressing' Great Ormond Street Hospital called the report "extremely distressing", adding the allegation relating to the hospital was "not reported at the time and therefore neither the police nor GOSH hold any records relating to the matter". Wheatfields Hospice said it was "appalled and dismayed" to hear the allegation against it and its "thoughts are with the individual involved and their family at this difficult time". BBC media correspondent Torin Douglas said the main target for victims making compensation claims would be the Savile estate. The BBC could also be targeted, he added. Operation Yewtree has three strands - claims against Savile, claims against Savile and others, and claims against others. The report marks the end of the investigation into claims against Savile. The allegations against Savile prompted a series of investigations, including three at the BBC and another by the Department of Health into his role at Broadmoor. The Dame Janet Smith List of Victims, is looking into the culture and practices of the BBC while Savile was an employee, said it had now been contacted by more than 350 people. The investigation is ongoing. END For years I couldn't bear to watch any TV Programs that Savile and Benny Hill were in, as they both gave me the creeps.......now I know why. Shame both Savile and Benny Hill were never "outed" before they died. Details of his close relationship with those in power came as research showed that his youngest victim was just two years old. The research by the NSPCC was commissioned by the BBC's Panorama as part of an investigation into Savile's links to government. Whitehall officials referred to the predatory paedophile as ‘Doctor’ as they allowed him to intervene in a staff dispute at Broadmoor Hospital. The DJ and Top of the Pops presenter even gained direct access to then health minister Edwina Currie, who suspected Savile of trying to ‘blackmail’ staff after discovering some were illicitly sub-letting hospital housing and fiddling overtime. Confidential Department of Health documents have now revealed the full extent of Savile’s influence over the Berkshire hospital. He first became involved through the League of Friends charity in the late 1960s and was later given his own set of keys and a house in the grounds. In 1987 he was appointed by the Government to serve on the secure unit’s board and was paid £1,230 a month. Despite having no medical qualifications, the entertainer was referred to as ‘Dr Jimmy Savile, OBE, KCSG, LLD’ in official documents. He secured unchecked access to patients, despite concerns from staff about his behaviour. A year later, Mrs Currie made Savile the head of a task force addressing tensions between Broadmoor’s management and unions. A memo suggests his appointment was pushed by senior civil servants, who appear to have been ‘star-struck’ by him. It adds that Savile was going through the hospital’s main departments like a ‘dose of salts’ and that he would be instrumental in solving the row with medical staff. ‘I would say he was one hundred per cent sincere and committed in his desire to improve the management of Broadmoor and the lives of its patients,’ the memo says. ‘But I doubt he’ll let anyone stand in his way, and he clearly doesn’t mind how many people get trampled underfoot in the process.’ The entrance to Broadmoor, the high-security psychiatric hospital: In 1987 Savile was appointed by the Government to serve on the secure unit¿s board and was paid £1,230 a month Panorama quoted Mrs Currie as saying Savile told her some staff were sub-letting hospital housing and fiddling overtime claims. He planned to use the information to pressure the union to end an overtime ban. Asked if this was blackmail, Mrs Currie said: ‘That sounds like blackmail to me. I made a note of it at the time, because I was so surprised. ‘If this meant that we broke the strike and could help the patients, then we had an issue of ends justifying means.’ The scale of Savile’s offending continues to grow and Thames Valley Police said it has received a further 16 complaints against him. Broadmoor Hospital is one of dozens under NHS investigation over the scandal, including Stoke Mandeville. Peter Watt, of the NSPCC, said: ‘There’s no doubt that Savile is one of the most, if not the most, prolific sex offender that we at the NSPCC have ever come across … somebody who at his most prolific lost no opportunity to identify vulnerable victims and abuse them.’ The West London Mental Health NHS Trust, which now runs Broadmoor, said its governance is ‘much more robust’ than at the time of Savile’s involvement. The ‘Chosen One’ aged 16 One victim said nurses laughed when she told them she had been sexually assaulted by Savile in a hospital basement. So far, 103 victims have come forward to describe the abuse they suffered at Jimmy Saviles hands while in the care of the National Health Service The woman, who was then a 16-year-old patient at Leeds General Infirmary, said Savile made her feel like the ‘chosen one’, taking her to the local shop and buying her sweets and magazines. But she claimed that later, a hospital porter led her to an area where Savile was waiting behind a closed door. ‘He pulled me in immediately and started to kiss me with his tongue,’ she told the BBC. One victim said nurses laughed when she told them she had been sexually assaulted by Savile in a hospital basement ‘At the same time his left hand went on to my right thigh under my dress. ‘There wasn’t time to draw breath, there wasn’t time to analyse even what’s happening here because it was seamless. . . And then he said you’ve got to go.’ The assault lasted no more than five or six minutes, she said. The incident made her feel ‘dirty and ridiculously stupid’, but when she tried to tell nurses they started laughing, making her feel she couldn’t finish. Only her mother took her claims seriously. But, she added, ‘everybody knew’ what was going on – yet staff, porters and patients at the hospital all accepted it. The victim said that when she discovered the full extent of Savile’s abuse, she wished she had reported the harrowing encounter to police. Terror at Broadmoor A Broadmoor patient revealed how Savile repeatedly targeted his victims at the psychiatric hospital in the 1990s. Staff often allowed him to sit unaccompanied in the day room, she said. On one occasion, while talking to her with his back to other patients, he put his hand on her leg and sexually assaulted her, speaking all the time. She said she froze and felt guilty – but a member of staff later insisted she must have imagined the abuse. Savile was able to assault her in the same way several times over a number of weeks. The cycle caused her ‘significant distress’, she told investigators. Savile had a long association with Broadmoor hospital, having worked there as a volunteer in the 1970s and 1980s. A Broadmoor patient revealed how Savile repeatedly targeted his victims at the psychiatric hospital in the 1990s He was later given a central position in the administration and was allowed to personally select managers, it has been claimed. He had a set of keys and even living quarters on site. Hurt herself in vain bid to escape his clutches Another victim told of the ‘major and lasting impact’ of Savile’s abuse in the late 1970s, when she was less than ten years old. The first time he attacked her, he picked her up from her house in a two-seater car – meaning that her family were forced to travel in a separate car rather than accompany the pair to Leeds General Infirmary, she said. As they arrived at the hospital, Savile took her into a room with no windows. When her parents left, he kissed her several times. Savile's coffin drives past The Leeds General Infirmary in 2011. According to the report his victims at the hospital ranged in age from five to 75 She was targeted again six months later, when he picked her up in the same car to take her alone to another appointment. By the third appointment, she was terrified of the entertainer. To avoid the abuse, she said she deliberately hurt herself so badly that she needed to be treated at a different hospital. But she couldn’t escape – for while she was recovering there, Savile visited her again. The traumatic experience when she was just a child has left her scarred for life, the report found. It states that she was only one of many victims at the Leeds hospital, including men, women, -boys and girls, who ranged in age from five to 75. Attacked while she watched Top Of The Pops A female patient at Broadmoor revealed how Savile assaulted her in the early 1970s as she watched Top of the Pops The presenter used to sit with patients to watch himself appear on the popular music show, which was pre-recorded. The victim, known in the report as Ms B, told investigators how on one occasion, he was watching the show with patients in front of a large sofa in the day room. Staff were standing behind the sofa, with their view blocked by the furniture. The paedophile sat on the floor next to the victim. Effectively hidden from sight, he placed his hand between her legs before assaulting her. The attack lasted for two to three minutes, she said. But like many others, she felt unable to complain because staff were unsympathetic. She said she did not feel able to tell her story then or later, for fear of being punished as a troublemaker. Savile presented the BBC show Top of the Pops, which had a largely teenage audience, from 1964 to 1984. Throughout this period, he escaped punishment for the horrific abuse of young stars and fans. She will lead the panel of experts investigating allegations that politicians, the police, celebrities, the BBC, the NHS and the Church conspired to cover-up abuse over several decades. Home Secretary Theresa May said the inquiry would examine whether a string of organisations failed in their ‘duty of care’ to protect children from harm. Former High Court judge Baroness Butler-Sloss is to lead the independent inquiry into child sex abuse For months MPs from all parties had called for an independent inquiry to be set up. Yesterday, Mrs May finally bowed to pressure and said she was now willing to establish an inquiry panel, based on the Hillsborough Inquiry, which could start more quickly than a full-scale public inquiry. If the panel members - who are yet to be appointed - demands it, ministers could convert it to a public inquiry at a later date. However, the scale of the task means it is 'not likely' to report in full before the general election in May 2015. Today it was announced that the panel will be chaired by Baroness Butler-Sloss, a former president of the Family Division of the High Court who chaired the Cleveland Child Abuse Inquiry. Baroness Butler-Sloss said: ‘I'm honoured to have been invited to lead this inquiry. The next step is to appoint the panel and agree the terms of reference. ‘We will begin this important work as soon as possible.’ The wide-ranging probe was ordered amid mounting public concern at organisations failing to protect children. It includes years of attacks carried out by celebrities including Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris, as well as the systematic abuse of vulnerable girls in areas including Derby, Rochdale and Oxford. Mrs May said: ‘In recent years, we have seen appalling cases of organised and persistent child sex abuse that have exposed serious failings by public bodies and important institutions. ‘That is why the government has established an independent panel of experts to consider whether these organisations have taken seriously their duty of care to protect children from sexual abuse.’ Details of the scope of the inquiry will be agreed when all of the members of the panel have been appointed. The government has committed to 'maximum transparency' to release all reports, reviews and files are made available to the panel. It could include reports from Special Branch, intelligence services and submissions sent to Prime Ministers. The unnamed suspect was held in Dorset yesterday and questioned at a local police station before being released last night, Scotland Yard said. The arrest was part of an inquiry named Operation Brancaster, which was set up after MP Tom Watson claimed there was a child abuse group which had with links to Number 10 Downing Street. Mr Watson wrote to Scotland Yard about the case, and the force later launched a number of separate criminal investigations after assessing the information. A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: 'A 67-year-old man has been arrested this morning, Tuesday, 14 October, at an address in Dorset on suspicion of historical child abuse offences. 'He was taken into custody locally and has now been released on police bail to a date in late November pending further inquiries. 'This arrest falls under a strand called Operation Brancaster, which was originally assessed as part of Operation Fairbank, and subsequently reached the criminal threshold.' Scotland Yard say the man has now been bailed until late November while the investigation continues RELATED: 660 Suspected Paedophiles Arrested in Massive Sting By Sunday World, 21 October 2014 Police have arrested the suspected paedophiles in Britain and Northern Ireland A major sex crime crackdown has led to the arrest of 660 suspected paedophiles across Britain, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has said. The six-month operation targeted internet users who access child abuse images but has already led to charges for serious sexual assault. Among the several hundred people arrested across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are workers who had access to children through their jobs and had no previous contact with police. The massive investigation, involving 45 police forces, led to hundreds of children being "safeguarded", the NCA said. It stressed that none of those arrested is a serving or former MP or member of the Government. The NCA said suspects include doctors, teachers, Scout leaders, care workers and former police officers. In total, only 39 registered sex offenders are among those arrested. Officers have searched 833 properties and examined 9,172 computers, phones and hard drives. The NCA said it built up "intelligence packages" on suspects and sent them to police forces across Britain. NCA deputy director general Phil Gormley said the crackdown, the biggest ever operation of its kind, involved alleged paedophiles who used the so-called "dark web" as well as traditional internet access. The "dark web" is internet content that is not listed by normal search engines. Users will often use payment methods such as virtual currencies to help avoid detection. The 431 children who were safeguarded were in the "care, custody or control" of the suspects, and included 127 who were deemed to be at immediate risk of harm. Mr Gormley said he was "profoundly disappointed" that so many suspects had been arrested over this type of crime, and said a harder look needs to be taken at the high numbers of people accessing child abuse images. He said: "The alternative is not to look under the stone, and we cannot afford not to look under this stone." Claire Lilley, head of online safety at the NSPCC, said: "This is an important two-pronged operation which has rescued children from abuse and also identified many previously unknown sex offenders. Direct action like this sends a strong message to those who subject children to harrowing sexual assaults that they can and will be traced and prosecuted. "But law enforcement agencies alone cannot deal with the vast problem of illegal images which continue to flood the market. Industry has to find inventive ways of blocking the flow of such horrendous pictures which are only produced through the suffering of defenceless children - many of who are not even old enough to go to school. "So while this operation must be rightly applauded we should view it as yet another warning sign that far more needs to be done if we are to stem the sordid trade in these images, which are often used by those who go on to abuse children." The programme shows how Harris became a national treasure, who painted the Queen’s portrait in Buckingham Palace, but allegedly humiliated girls and sexually assaulted women for decades. Therapist Chip Somers, speaking on behalf of Victim A for the first time, says of her claims: “In the second half of the 1990s, a woman came looking for help for an alcohol problem. And she has given me permission to talk about those experiences. “She said ‘This person is very well-known, I’ve been part of the family for some time and I don’t know whether or not I should say the name’. I reassured her and she said ‘it is Rolf Harris’. “She started to experience innocent physical contact. There was a specific point when it changed completely from anything that could be perceived as innocent. “These things were happening both in his home, in her home, becoming more frequent, and she is also quite clearly told, ‘This is something that you cannot talk about. Do not tell anybody about this. This is our little secret. I am a powerful person, I have money, so tread carefully’. “She was having to carry this incredible secret, this incredible sense of guilt and disgust and hatred.” A number of other women make claims of “degrading and awful” treatment by Harris over decades. They have waived their right to anonymity to describe how his alleged behaviour impacted on them, and the pressures that finally forced them to come forward to testify in court. Karen Gardner, who met Harris on TV show Star Games in 1977 when she was 16, says he assaulted her three times in the space of 35 minutes. She tells the programme: “He said something, which still makes me feel sick now. He said to me, ‘You’re irresistible.’ I was 16. He was 48. He was 10 years older than my dad.” Harris was acquitted of assaulting Ms Gardner, now a BBC journalist, after the jury failed to reach a verdict. Former family friend Chris Brosnan recalls he once pulled over his car and shouted at Harris when he remarked that he wanted to sleep with young schoolgirls they had driven past. He also remembers noticing resentment from daughter Bindi towards Harris. Brosnan, known to the family as Bear, says: “I was privy to far more predatory behaviour than a lot of other people. There was this shadow that began to creep in more and more and more. In court, Bindi Harris admitted learning about her father and Victim A in the late 1990s, but claimed Victim A was 18 and the relationship was consensual. Harris was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault, one of which was later overturned. He was released in May 2017 after serving three years of a five-year, nine-month sentence. He now lives in Berkshire with his wife of 64 years, Alwen Hughes, who has Alzheimer’s disease. Last October he was “gravely sick” according to friends and neighbours. Harris, now 93, has not spoken out publicly since his release but provided a statement for a book last year saying he was “convicted of offences I did not commit”. In 2013, the Welsh native pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court to 13 child sex offences. He also admitted to the rape and sexual assault of a child who was under the age of 13. Watkins also admitted conspiring to rape a child, three counts of sexual assault involving children, seven involving taking, making or possessing indecent images of children and one of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving a sex act on an animal. Sentencing Mr Justice Royce said the case broke 'new ground' and 'plunged into new depths of depravity'. He said Watkins had a 'corrupting influence' and had shown a 'complete lack of remorse'. He added Watkins posed a significant risk to the public in particular to women with young children. Watkins also admitted conspiring to rape a child, three counts of sexual assault involving children, seven involving taking, making or possessing indecent images of children and one of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving a sex act on an animal. The musician was later handed an extra 10 months after he was discovered to have a mobile phone in his possession while behind bars. Initially, he denied having a three-inch GSTAR phone in his cell. As the verdict was read out, Watkins claimed that "known murderers" in his prison told him to keep an eye on the phone after chucking it on his bed. During the hearing, Judge Rodney Jameson QC said: "I am very conscious of the fact you are serving a very long time and you will be well into middle age by the time you are released. The fact of the matter is if there is not an appreciable penalty for having had a mobile phone in these circumstances then of course you would draw from that the lesson you could have another one and that is not a position I would want to encourage." Speaking about possible repercussions, he said: "Chances are someone would sneak up behind me and cut my throat. It's not like one-on-one. Stuff like that, you don't see it coming." He is said to be sharing his wing with murderers, killers, rapists and paedophiles, who he described as "the worst of the worst". Watkins told the court his band had sold between five and ten million records across the world between 1999 and 2012. Denning found fame in the 1960s as a BBC DJ and once held a party in the home of notorious paedophile Jimmy Savile In addition to using his fame and showbiz connections to dazzle his child victims, he opened a string of computer game shops to lure boys for abuse. Denning was one of the original Radio 1 DJs in the 1960s Denning hosted shows on Radio Luxembourg, where he interviewed The Beatles, then hosted shows with Kenny Everett for the BBC. He was one of the founding DJs on BBC Radio 1 and was the first voice ever to speak on BBC2. He left the BBC for Decca Records, then moved to Bell Records, where he helped to launch the careers of paedophile Gary Glitter and the Bay City Rollers. Their manager, Tom Paton, was convicted of gross indecency involving boys aged 16 and 17 and is alleged to have been a paedophile. But in the 1970s Denning was exposed as a sex offender. He was convicted of gross indecency in 1974. In 1988, he was jailed for three years for indecent assault and possessing indecent images. In 1996, he was prosecuted for publishing indecent articles. Despite his numerous convictions, he was invited in 1997 to participate in a 30-year anniversary reunion for BBC Radio 1, alongside Terry Wogan, Tony Blackburn and John Peel. It was later revealed that he was already a convicted sex offender in Europe before he ever found fame in the UK. He was prosecuted in 1959 in Germany for circulating pornographic images. In the late 1990s, Denning relocated to Prague, where he was accused of running a paedophile ring. Denning had photographed himself abusing boys he picked up from amusement arcades and swimming pools. He represented himself in that case and delivered a record 44-hour closing argument, which only ended when the judge cut him off. Denning was a friend of paedo Jimmy Savile He was convicted of abusing boys under 15 and jailed. In 2001, it was announced that police were seeking to extradite Denning from the Czech Republic to question him under Operation Arundel – the investigation into paedophile offences linked to the Walton Hop – a disco for teenagers.
