The Duchess of Sussex says she upset the "dynamic of the hierarchy" of the Royal Family "just by existing".

Talking about her exit from the Royal Family the duchess said it "takes a lot of effort to forgive".

She also spoke about Prince Harry's relationship with his father, the Prince of Wales.

Asked by journalist Alison P Davis about the impact of her privacy case against the Mail on Sunday, Meghan said: "Harry said to me, 'I lost my dad in this process.'

"It doesn't have to be the same for them as it was for me, but that's his decision."

A spokeswoman for the duchess later told BBC News that Meghan was referring to her own father, from whom she is estranged, and was saying she hoped the same would not happen to her husband.

A source close to Prince Charles told the PA news agency he would be saddened if Prince Harry felt their relationship was lost, adding: "The Prince of Wales loves both his sons".

The 37-year-old prince has previously said his father "stopped taking my calls" after the couple stepped back as senior working royals in 2020.

Under the arrangement, the couple gave up their Royal Highness titles, and became able to work to become financially independent. Harry retained the title of prince through birth.

Prior to this, the Sussexes reportedly set out a vision for continuing to be working royals in the Commonwealth and to earn their own money, in the hope this would reduce "the noise" about them.

Meghan told The Cut: "That, for whatever reason, is not something that we were allowed to do, even though several other members of the family do that exact thing."

After announcing they would step back from royal duties, Prince Harry and Meghan initially moved to Canada in January 2020.

But, after Canada said it would stop providing security for the family, the family moved to California, where they lived in a home provided by media mogul Tyler Perry before buying their own property in Montecito.

Meghan is media dynamite, so a fairly gentle interview, with some open-to-interpretation comments, has blasted its way on to the front pages.

For her fans, it was another slice of the unfair, crabby-minded pressures of royal life that forced Meghan and Harry to move to California.

For her critics, it was more deluded self-promotion, seizing on quotes such as Meghan being told that her marriage to Harry was greeted in South Africa with rejoicing the same as "when Mandela was freed from prison".

The article describes them living in the "home equivalent of billionaires dressing down in denim" and their complaints might grate with families worried sick about paying energy bills.

But the interview raised some of the contradictions facing Harry and Meghan.

They wanted to get away from the suffocation of royal life, but their royal links are their most bankable assets.

It's like old rockers not wanting to talk about their early records, when that's the only reason people are interested.

They also wanted to escape media intrusion and they have in effect become part of the media, with deals with Spotify and Netflix.

And Harry voiced the perennial royal dilemma: "If you do something, they criticise you. If you don't do anything, they criticise you anyway."

Davis, a features writer who has previously interviewed celebrities such as Jada Pinkett Smith and Lena Dunham, asked Meghan if she thought there was room for forgiveness between her and her royal in-laws and her own family.

The duchess responded: "I think forgiveness is really important. It takes a lot more energy to not forgive.

"But it takes a lot of effort to forgive. I've really made an active effort, especially knowing that I can say anything."

In the 6,450-word interview, Meghan also:

spoke of her fears that staying in the UK may have exposed her son, Archie, three, to excessive media attention
criticised the lack of control she had over the release of family photographs when she was a senior royal
said Archie is taught the importance of manners, with the phrase "manners make the man" often repeated

The Cut interview was part of a promotion effort for the duchess's Spotify podcast, Archetypes, which launched last week.

The series promises to "investigate, dissect and subvert the labels that try to hold women back", with tennis legend Serena Williams discussing ambition on the first episode, while pop star Mariah Carey features in the second instalment, released on Tuesday.

In Carey's episode the duchess says there was more focus on her race once she started dating her husband.

"Then I started to understand what it was like to be treated like a black woman, because up until then I had been treated like a mixed woman and things really shifted," she said.

The Sussexes, who also have a one-year-old daughter, Lilibet, have signed deals with Spotify and Netflix since leaving the UK.

Prince Harry told Davis he did not believe some members of the Royal Family could live and work together as closely as he and his wife do.

The article described the Sussexes running their company Archewell while sitting at a single desk in a shared home office.

"Most people that I know and many of my family, they aren't able to work and live together," Prince Harry said.

"It's actually really weird because it'd seem like a lot of pressure. But it just feels natural and normal."

Both Harry and Meghan have had legal battles with parts of the British media and the duchess told Davis she would not have been able to pick Archie up from school in the UK "without it being a royal photo call with a press pen of 40 people snapping pictures".

"Sorry, I have a problem with that. That doesn't make me obsessed with privacy. That makes me a strong and good parent protecting my child," she said.

Several royal correspondents have taken to social media to say this would not be the case and have said its time for Meghan to just SHUT UP and try to show some dignity as that shown by The Royal Family

This was the first visit to the UK by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and the first public address in the UK by Meghan since the couple's move to the United States.

It's also a visit that follows a strongly-divided reaction to an interview with Meghan last week, which re-opened claims of family tensions.

"It is very nice to be back in the UK," she began her keynote address at the One Young Summit in Manchester's Bridgewater Hall - after an earlier welcome from the city's mayor Andy Burnham.

In a speech that side-stepped any controversy, the duchess described her own imposter-syndrome feelings when she attended the 2014 version of the event, when she was a TV actress and before meeting Prince Harry.

"I wasn't sure that I belonged. I was so nervous. I doubted myself and I wondered if I was good enough to even be there," she told her audience of young leaders from more than 190 countries.

"I was so overwhelmed by this experience. I think I even saved my little paper place card that said my name on it. Just proof that I was there," Meghan told the audience.

"I'm thrilled that my husband is able to join me here this time," she said, at an event with fees of over £3,000 for delegates, which organisers say are mostly funded by scholarships or charity partners.

She told the young delegates: "You are the ones driving the positive and necessary change needed across the globe."

Critics accuse the couple of still relying on royal connections to promote their new careers in the US

Meghan's speech followed a coruscating address from the pop star Bob Geldof, who warned the young leaders not to turn into "creeps" if they were ever in power.

The Sussexes had travelled by train from London to Manchester for the first of a series of events on their UK visit.

But it's not known whether the duke and duchess will meet other members of the Royal Family this week, including the Queen, who is in Balmoral and due to hold an audience on Tuesday with the new prime minister.

Sources say an open invitation remains for a meeting with Prince Charles, although not one specifically issued for this week.

There is no confirmation about whether Prince Harry and Meghan will meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - with both couples near each other on the Windsor estate.

But there will be a trip to Germany to support plans for next year's Invictus Games for injured veterans and they will make an appearance at the WellChild Awards, celebrating the achievements of seriously-ill children, which will be held in London on Thursday.

The visit to the UK follows a blizzard of publicity surrounding Meghan's US interview with New York magazine The Cut and the first episodes of her Spotify podcast series.

Meghan's magazine interview, conducted in the sunshine of her Californian mansion, strongly divided opinion - with her supporters seeing it as a further account of why she needed to escape the pressures of life within the Royal Family.

She said she upset the "dynamic of the hierarchy" of the Royal Family "just by existing" - and suggesting unresolved disputes she said it "takes a lot of effort to forgive".

But her vociferous critics accused her of "delusion", seizing on quotes such as Meghan recounting being told that her marriage to Harry was greeted in South Africa with rejoicing the same as "when Mandela was freed from prison".

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were in the country as part of a mini Euro tour when the monarch suddenly passed away on Thursday.

Harry, 37, had been due to speak at the WellChild awards in London on the same day but pulled out so he could rush to Balmoral Castle in Scotland where Elizabeth II died surrounded by her family.

Meghan, 41, remained in the English capital, similarly to Kate who stayed at home while Prince William travelled up north.

The Sussexes touched down in Britain last Saturday and have appeared at events in Manchester and in Dusseldorf, Germany, and were thought to be planning to jet back home to California, US, imminently.

But are now understood to be staying until at least Monday, September 19 when the state funeral is expected at Westminster Abbey.

They are also said to have discussed whether their children, Archie, three, and Lilibet, one, will be making the trip over, reports HELLO.

The magazine's royal editor Emily Nash said: "We understand that Harry and Meghan will be staying in the UK until after the funeral.

"It's fair to say that they obviously want to be present for the Queen and pay tribute to her."

Ms Nash went on to say Balmoral itself holds further significance for William and Harry because they were staying there when they learned of their mum Diana's death in 1997.

She added: "One of the most painful times in their lives happened while they were on holiday at Balmoral and that won't have been lost on them when they travelled back there to be there at the Queen's bedside.

"It must have been incredibly sad for everyone involved, but it was the place she loved, the place which her grandchildren said was one of the most beautiful in the world and I'm sure they'll take comfort in knowing that she was in such beautiful surroundings."

Harry is said to have received news his grandmother had died while he was still in the air, flying to the Highlands from Windsor.

He was then seen leaving Balmoral in a Range Rover shortly after 8am on Friday.

The duke had always shared a strong bond with the Queen, as he did with Prince Philip who died in April 2021.

Despite stepping down as a working royal, alongside Meghan, in March 2020 and moving to Montecito in Santa Barbara, he had jetted back for his grandfather's funeral.

Yesterday it was reported how Prince Harry was reportedly denied the chance to wear military uniform as he mourns the Queen, even though his disgraced uncle Prince Andrew will be permitted to do so at a lying in state vigil.

Harry, who saw action on the front line during two tours of duty in Afghanistan, will be in civilian dress for official events including the late monarch’s state funeral.

Only working royals – which Harry and Andrew are not – are being permitted to dress in uniform at five ceremonial occasions.

These are the St Giles’ Cathedral service in Edinburgh, which took place earlier where Andrew wore a morning suit, and the coffin’s procession to Westminster Hall, the vigil at the lying in state, the funeral in Westminster Abbey and the committal service in Windsor.

After the initials were not removed from Prince William, a pal told The Sunday Times: "He is heartbroken. To remove his grandmother’s initials feels very intentional."

Reports suggest Harry nearly decided to wear the morning suit anyway to avoid "humiliation".

However it does not appear to be an intentional snub - the initials are traditionally only worn by those 'in service' of the monarch.

Hopes for a reconciliation between the two brothers still seem like a long way away, despite some comparisons being made between them keeping vigil yesterday and the moment they walked behind Princess Diana's coffin in 1997.

The brothers have put on a united front in public along with their respective wives Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, despite the reports of the rift between them continuing.

A row then ensued where Harry tried to persuade his father to allow Meghan to join him.

After the dispute he missed the flight carrying his brother and uncles to Scotland and also a chance to say farewell to his grandmother.

Reports initially suggested Harry found out about his grandmother's death via a phone call from his father.

The Telegraph, however claims says the call never made it through.

King Charles tried to reach Harry who knew he was trying to be contacted, but was unable to speak to him before the Queen died.

It is claimed Harry heard of the late monarch's passing through a notification on his phone about breaking news.

Palace sources, however, insisted the official announcement "was not made until all family members had been informed."

A source quoted in the Daily Mail said: "The official announcement was delayed until after everybody had been told.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly ditched their PR firm.

New York-based Sunshine Sachs has represented the Duchess of Sussex since her acting days.

The firm helped Harry and Meghan start a new life in America after they stepped down as senior royals in 2020.

Sunshine Sachs partner Keleigh Thomas Morgan apparently shared her key California contacts with the couple when they crossed the Atlantic.

And Ms Morgan's pal American filmmaker Tyler Perry allowed Harry and Meghan to stay in his home when they first moved to LA.

A source told the Daily Mail: "This is a really big deal for Meghan. She takes the view that she doesn't need to pay an outside firm a lot of money to do PR for her and Harry anymore."

Ms Morgan, who is friends with Meghan, also helped orchestrate the couple's successful African royal tour in 2019.

Christine Schirmer, head of communications at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's charity Archewell, will now handle publicity for the couple.

It comes after sources said Harry and Meghan were desperate to edit their Netflix show and memoir following the Queen’s death.

The couple have been working on a docuseries as part of a multi-million dollar Netflix deal.

However, it's thought the bombshell series, that was rumoured to air sometime in November or December, could be pushed back to next year as Harry and Meghan want to make edits.

Meanwhile, Harry’s explosive memoir, originally scheduled for release in November, has already been pushed back until next year.

The couple have had a hand in the editing process of the series so far but, following the Queen's death earlier this month, want to scale back some of the comments made about the likes of King Charles, Queen Consort Camilla and William and Kate, the new Prince and Princess of Wales.

“A lot of conversations are happening. I hear that Harry and Meghan want the series to be held until next year, they want to stall," one source told Page Six.

“I wonder if the show could even be dead in the water at this point, do Harry and Meghan just want to shelve this thing?”

On Harry's memoir, an insider told The Sun on Sunday that the publishers, Penguin Random House, paid £18.4million up front for the book, but were "disappointed" by the first draft because it apparently focused on mental health issues more than they wanted.

They added that the Duke of Sussex is "desperate" to get the book "refined" in the light of his grandmother's passing, but warned that it "might be too late".

It was previously claimed by a royal expert that King Charles hoped the Queens' funeral would "convince Harry and Meghan to accept the olive branch" offered by the family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are rumoured to be keen on a move to the Hope Ranch community because their $14 million mansion in nearby Montecito “does not properly accommodate them”.

A journalist who recently visited the nine-bedroom property described it as "startlingly big".

Hope Ranch homes can fetch as much as $22 million, according to a Santa Barbara News-Press report.

The community contains a range of facilities including a country club, golf club and tennis court – as well as a strong equestrian community comprising 27 miles of riding trails.

The Daily Mail cites a News-Press report that the couple may already have purchased a property there, although no buy has been confirmed.

There has been no indication as to whether the couple are likely to seek a larger property than their current home or downsize.

While Montecito is popular with Hollywood celebrities such as the Sussexes' friend Ellen DeGeneres, as well as the likes of Katy Perry and Jennifer Aniston, Hope Ranch's affluent private neighbourhood would offer quieter surroundings for the royals to raise children Archie and Lilibet.

The potential move comes on the back of police action in Montecito designed to combat a rise in crime.

An email from the Montecito Association to residents said license-plates recognition cameras were being installed “in response to the high-value property crime we've experienced recently,” according to reports in The Sun.

“The crimes are being committed by sophisticated out-of-the-area theft gangs.”

The Sussexes have been affected by the crime spree, with their home reportedly subject to two intruder scares in the space of 12 days earlier this year.

Santa Barbara Police records logged cops visiting their mansion on May 19 at 5.44pm after reports of a trespasser.

They then responded to a second intruder report on May 31 at 3.21pm – a matter of hours before Harry and Meghan returned from the UK after attending the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The Sun reported Craig Bonner, undersheriff for Santa Barbara County, telling an online meeting that the area was having “some problems with professional burglars”.

The unincorporated village of Hope Ranch had a population of about 2,200 at the time of the last census in the US.

Harry and Meghan bought their existing property in June 2020, four months after stepping down from royal duties and deciding to relocate across the Atlantic.

The first-look trailer is finally here for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's eagerly-anticipated Netflix docuseries - and it appears explosive.

The minute-long teaser shows never before seen pictures of the couple, as well as a photo of the Princess of Wales, along with several clips of an emotional-looking Meghan appearing to wipe tears from her eyes.

In it Harry says: "No-one sees what is happening behind closed doors" while Meghan adds: "When the stakes are this high, doesn't it make more sense to hear our story from us?"

However, littered throughout the teaser clip are hidden details you may not have clocked on first viewing - and here we reveal some of the biggest buried details....

The trailer includes the first photo from inside Meghan and Harry's private wedding celebration back in 2018.

While the religious part of the day was televised and became a public celebration, the lunch and evening events were behind closed doors with strict confidentiality rules for guests.

Only their closest and most trusted friends were invited, with some of Harry's oldest pals being cut from the guestlist.

The new unseen photo shows the newlyweds on the dance floor, holding hands as they party the night away.

Guests around them seem to be enjoying the festivities, holding drinks as they show off their moves.

There are huge floral displays and what appear to be fairy lights in the background. The large by-folding doors are wide open, suggesting the party carried on into the grounds of Frogmore House.

For their first Christmas card photo as husband and wife, the couple shared a snap of them watching the fireworks display outside the party.

Meanwhile a hidden detail within the wedding photo is the appearance of Harry's cousin Zara Tindall and her husband Mike, who recently appeared on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here.

They can be seen behind Harry and Meghan on the dancefloor with Mike appearing to be busting a move to the music.

Many of the snaps in the first part of the trailer chart Harry and Meghan during the early days of their romance.

Several of the photos appear to show them on what appears to be a holiday - and it's known that they once enjoyed a getaway to Botswana.

The couple travelled to Botswana in 2016 just months after going on their first romantic date in London.

Using the trip as a chance to get to know one-another, Meghan and Harry spent five nights away from their luxury log cabins in the wilderness to camp "alone".

According to new biography Finding Freedom, Harry was "delightfully surprised" by how down-to-earth Meghan was when it came to "roughing-it" for the week.

The Duchess reportedly packed very little clothing and "cleaned her face with baby wipes and happily wandered into the woodlands if she needed a bathroom break".

Harry and Meghan were said to have bonded over their love of nature during the trip, and the pair returned a year later after getting engaged to work with elephant conservation groups.

Another snap shows the Sussexes relaxing as Harry holds a guitar while Meghan places her hand in his.

It seems to suggest that Harry can play the instrument, although it has never been confirmed if this is the case.

It has previously been hinted that he can indeed play the instrument although he once refused to sing on a record with Jon Bon Jovi saying he would rather leave it up to the professionals.

The brand new second trailer for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's explosive new Netflix docuseries features a clip that echoes Princess Diana's final hours.

The new one-minute promo, which was released today, has several shots of Harry's late mother being hounded by photographers as the prince talks about "the pain and suffering of women marrying into this institution".

It also features a crying Meghan saying: "I realised they are never going to protect you" as it cuts to a short frame of the couple sitting in a car looking concerned as they turn towards the back window.

A clip is then shown of a car seemingly following behind while hordes of photographers swarm around a vehicle.

In August 1997, Diana was killed following a car crash in Paris with the vehicle she and her companion Dodi Al-Fayed had been travelling in tailed by paparazzi.

It comes after earlier in the trailer when a photo of the royal family at Trooping the Colour in 2019 appears and Harry says: "There is a hierarchy in the family. You know, there's leaking but there is also planting of stories."

It ends with Harry saying: "“No one knows the full truth. We know the full truth.”

Meanwhile Netflix has also confirmed the first half of the six-part series will drop on Thursday (December 8) and the rest will come the Thursday after 15 December .

It comes as the Royal Family have been warned to brace themselves for their worst nightmare as Harry and Meghan’s bombshell Netflix documentary series airs this week.

One source in contact with a Netflix production insider said: “I genuinely think it’s going to be worse than the royals can imagine.

Last Thursday the first official teaser for Harry & Meghan, the Sussexes’ behind-the-scenes Netflix docuseries, dropped.

In one section of the footage, Meghan appears to be wiping away tears with both hands as they stream down her face, while Harry sits and tilts his head right back, seemingly in distress.

The couple is heard by a voice in the background being asked: “Why did you want to make this documentary?”

Charles Spencer has broken his silence after the final episodes of Harry & Meghan were released on Netflix.

Princess Diana's younger brother Charles, 9th Earl Spencer, shared a picture of King Charles I - whose quarrels with Parliament provoked a civil war that led to his execution in 1649.

The British peer and author has remained silent since his nephew Prince Harry's explosive claims about the royal family.

But he has now taken to Instagram with a post that royal fans dubbed "very apt" in the light of recent revelations.

He posted: “Portrait of Charles I, hanging in the Picture Gallery at @althorphouse - the king visited the house in the 1630s, as an honoured guest - at one banquet recorded as feasting on herons, pea****s, and even the humble potato (which was relatively new to England then)."

"He was also allowed to visit Althorp [the Spencer estate] several times in 1647, when being held prisoner at his palace of Holdenby - after losing the first English Civil War. The king’s hobbies included Bible-reading, chess, and lawn bowls, and Althorp had an excellent bowling green. Charles was executed in London, in January 1649.”

One royal fan replied: “Very apt portrait and king to reflect on today.”

“I wish I was a fly on your wall. The history your family would have collected in time,” another added.

A third wrote: "You may be silent on the Netflix drama but after this post about a previous King Charles, might one dare to say you are #TeamHarry - very sagacious to stay silent but let history speak for you.."

Diana, who died at the age of 36, is buried in the grounds of Althorp Park.

Her brother Earl Spencer has been the custodian of the family estate since the death of his father in 1992.

After their mother's death, Prince Harry and Prince William revealed they could not understand why people were "breaking down" until they realised the impact she had on the world.

The two brothers spoke of their heartbreak in the days after their mother's death in a documentary called BBC documentary called Diana, 7 Days, which was released in 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of her death.

Speaking on the programme, William said: "People wanted to grab us, to touch us.

“They were shouting, wailing, literally wailing at us, throwing flowers, and yelling, sobbing, breaking down, people fainted, collapsed. It was a very alien environment.

William and Harry were at Balmoral with their father, grandmother the Queen and grandfather Prince Philip when they were told the tragic news that Diana had died aged 36 following a car crash in Paris.

Ndileka Mandela praised the couple for having the courage to break away from the Royal family, but she added that she found the use of her grandfather's name "deeply upsetting and tedious".

Speaking from Johannesburg about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex second Netflix documentary Live To Lead, she was critical of their use of the former South African president.

Prince Harry's controversial book looks set to focus on his strained relationship with his brother William, and could damage their relationship forever, royal experts have said.

And there has always been some hearsay that she had a child with him.

Writing in his memoir Spare - which is released next week - Harry makes reference to the rumours and how the now-King Charles had often made light of guessing who his real father was.

The Duke writes: "The joke was damn funny in light of the rumour going around at the time that my real father was one of my mother's ex-lovers: Major James Hewitt.

"One cause of the rumour was Major Hewitt's red hair, but another was sadism.

"Tabloid readers loved the idea that Prince Charles's youngest son was not Prince Charles's son. They never got tired of that 'joke', for some reason."

Harry goes on to ponder whether it was to help paint him as a "laughing stock".

He says it didn't seem to matter that Diana hadn't even met Major Hewitt "until long after I was born".

Harry also claims some journalists went so far as to begin "hunting my DNA to verify it" and his initial response was that after "torturing" his mum into hiding "soon they would come for me".

He writes that over the years, rehashed versions of the story seem to be published "with some seriousness" and any accounts of Charles having to reassure him Major Hewitt was not his dad are "invented".

In a statement on Monday, he said he emailed the couple on Christmas Day to say his language had been "disgraceful" and he was "profoundly sorry".

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan said the article was not an isolated incident for Clarkson.

Clarkson had released a statement before Christmas saying he "was horrified to have caused so much hurt".

The Sun newspaper has also apologised for the December article and removed it from its website.

In the column, Clarkson wrote that he lay in bed "dreaming of the day when she [Meghan] is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant 'Shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at her".

He also claimed "everyone who's my age thinks the same way", and that her appeal to young people who "think she was a prisoner of Buckingham Palace" made him "despair".

A record 25,000 complaints have been made to press regulator Ipso since the piece was published.

In his lengthy Instagram post on Monday, the presenter of Amazon Prime's The Grand Tour and Clarkson's Farm and ITV's Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, said he usually reads what he's written before filing his copy, but he was home alone that day and in a hurry.

"So when I'd finished, I just pressed send. And then, when the column appeared the next day, the land mine exploded."

He said he picked up a copy of The Sun and quickly realised he had "completely messed up".

"You are sweaty and cold at the same time. And your head pounds. And you feel sick. I couldn't believe what I was reading. Had I really said that? It was horrible."

He said he had been thinking of a scene in Games of Thrones when he wrote about imagining the duchess being abused in the street, but had forgotten to mention it.

"So it looked like I was actually calling for revolting violence to rain down on Meghan's head."

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said Clarkson addressed his correspondence solely to Prince Harry.

"While a new public apology has been issued today by Mr Clarkson, what remains to be addressed is his long-standing pattern of writing articles that spread hate rhetoric, dangerous conspiracy theories and misogyny," the spokesperson said.

"Unless each of his other pieces were also written 'in a hurry', as he states, it is clear that this is not an isolated incident shared in haste, but rather a series of articles shared in hate," they added.

In a recent interview with ITV, Prince Harry criticised Clarkson as well as the Royal Family for not commenting on the matter at the time.

In his statement, Clarkson added that he had "tried to explain" himself. "But still, there were calls for me to be sacked and charged with a hate crime. More than 60 MPs demanded action to be taken. ITV, who make Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and Amazon, who make the Farm Show and the Grand Tour, were incandescent."

It was then that he "wrote to everyone who works with me saying how sorry I was" as well as emailing the duke and duchess.

"On Christmas morning, I emailed Harry and Meghan in California to apologise to them too. I said I was baffled by what they had been saying on TV but that the language I'd used in my column was disgraceful and that I was profoundly sorry."

He also acknowledged that his own daughter Emily had been among his critics.

Variety is reporting that Amazon Prime "is likely to be parting ways" with Clarkson after 2024, when his shows that are already in the pipeline are due to end. Amazon declined to comment.

Last month, ITV's media and entertainment boss Kevin Lygo described Clarkson's column as "awful" but said there were no plans "at the moment" to replace him as host of game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

ITV is believed to have one more series due to be filmed with Clarkson but no further current commissioning commitments beyond that.

Oprah celebrated her 69th birthday over the weekend, with stars like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Sharon Stone all on hand to help the legendary interviewer mark the occasion in style.

But Harry and Meghan were nowhere to be seen at the star-studded party - something that has surprised many people due to the fact Oprah was the journalist they chose to sit down with for their explosive TV interview in 2021.

It's not known if the couple had prior engagements and were simply unable to make their friend's party, or if Oprah - who attended Harry and Meghan's 2019 wedding - snubbed the pair and left them off the guestlist.

While no-one knows for certain why the Duke and Duchess didn't attend their pal's birthday party, one expert has suggested their conspicuous absence could signify something bigger.

Kara Kennedy claims Harry and Meghan's "loud mouths" are being used against them following the couple's decision to tell their story via Netflix documentaries and tell-all memoirs.

"On a more serious note, snubs like this show that the tide is turning with the Sussexes — and that the gamble that saw them trade in the lifelong duty of being working royalty for the money and fame of being celebrities hasn’t paid off," Kennedy writes in The Spectator.

"It’s easy to see why Oprah wouldn’t want the pair at her birthday shindig after Harry’s latest revelations," she went on to claim.

During their televised interview with Oprah in March 2021, Harry and Meghan claimed a member of Harry’s family had expressed "concerns" over what colour their son Archie’s skin would be while the former Suits actress was pregnant.

The revelation caused many to speculate if the Royal Family is a racist institution, but Harry slammed those claims earlier this year.

Speaking with Tom Bradby ahead of the release of his bombshell memoir, the dad-of-two was told: "In the Oprah interview you accused members of your family of racism," before Harry cut in to insist: "No I didn’t. The British press said that."

Tom looked briefly nonplussed before Harry added: "Did Meghan ever mention that they’re racist?"

The ITV journalist replied: "She said there were troubling comments about Archie’s skin colour."

Harry then said there was 'concern' about his skin colour, to which Tom asked if that would not be described as 'essentially racist'.

The former working royal replied: "I wouldn’t, not having lived within that family."

Kennedy continued to reference the contrasting interviews in her Spector column, claiming: "The interview [with Oprah] was not an attempt to speak truth, nor was it an attempt at reconciliation.

The duke and duchess now live in California with their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

They quit life as working royals in 2020 and left the UK shortly afterwards.

Frogmore Cottage, a Grade-II listed 10-bedroom property in the grounds of Windsor Castle in Berkshire, was a gift to the royal couple from the late Queen.

Prince Harry and Meghan refurbished the property, owned by the Crown Estate, at an estimated cost of £2.4m in 2018-19. The cost was initially covered by taxpayers through the Sovereign Grant before being repaid in full by the duke.

They were reportedly told to leave the property by Buckingham Palace in January, days after Harry published his explosive memoir, Spare.

The book - which was released in January and became the fastest-selling non-fiction book in the UK since records began in 1998 - included claims Prince Harry was physically attacked by his brother, the Prince of Wales. He also wrote that he and his brother, the Prince of Wales, had begged their father not to marry Camilla, now Queen Consort.

Prince Andrew, the late Queen's second son, lives in the nearby 31-bedroom Royal Lodge, in Windsor Great Park, Berkshire.

He stepped down as a working royal in 2019 after a controversial Newsnight interview about allegations that he had sexually assaulted Virginia Giuffre. He has repeatedly denied the allegations.

In February 2022, he paid an undisclosed sum to settle the civil sexual assault case Ms Giuffre brought against him in the US.

Reports in recent weeks, not confirmed by the BBC, suggested the King is to cut Andrew's annual grant which could leave him unable to afford his home's running costs.

The cottage has a rich and varied history. Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, had it built in 1792 as a place for her and her daughters to escape the court.

At the time it was fashionable for the wealthy to build large homes disguised as idyllic rural cottages.

Surviving relatives of Tsar Nicholas II also lived there after fleeing to the UK, following the murder of other family members by Bolsheviks in 1918.

Since World War Two, the cottage is believed to have been used as a home for members of royal household staff, before Prince Harry and Meghan moved in.

Documents have been filed on behalf of Prince Harry over the alleged illegal interception of voicemail messages, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

A spokeswoman for News Group Newspapers (NGN) - the publishers of the Sun and the News of The World - said: "We confirm that a claim has been issued by the Duke of Sussex."

The details of the duke's new legal action were first reported by the website Byline.

The BBC understands the duke's allegations against NGN predate 2010, but it is not yet clear when his claims against the Mirror date from.

A source at Reach, which owns the Mirror, told the Press Association it was aware proceedings had been issued but had not yet received them, so was unable to comment further.

Jonny Dymond, the BBC's royal correspondent, says the presumption is the legal action goes back to the phone-hacking scandal of the early 2000s.

Last month, a US poll showed the pair are now rated lower than disgraced royal Prince Andrew.

According to a poll conducted by Redfield & Wilton for Newsweek on February 19, Harry was disliked by 42% of Americans, compared to 32% who said they liked him — with a 'net approval rating of -10.

The same poll saw Harry at 38 points in a December 5 poll showing a staggering 48 point drop .

Former suits star Meghan was liked by 27 percent of Americans and disliked by 44 percent giving her a net rating -17 in February 19 figures on the same poll.

Prince Harry has made a surprise trip to London and is at the High Court to attend a hearing in his latest legal claim.

The Duke of Sussex is among a number of high-profile individuals who have brought a case against Daily Mail publisher Associated Newspapers over alleged unlawful information-gathering at its titles.

As he arrived at the Royal Courts of Justice this morning flanked by security, a smiling Harry bid waiting photographers and reporters a "good morning" and almost walked into one snapper before he entered the building.

It is believed to be the first time Harry has been back in the UK since the late Queen's funeral in September.

His surprise return comes nearly three months after he laid bare his troubled relationship with his father King Charles and brother Prince William in his controversial autobiography Spare.

The hearing today was due to coincide with Charles and Queen Camilla's state visit to France, which was due to start yesterday but was shelved due to unrest in the country.

But according to the Telegraph, Harry is not expected to meet up with his father while in the UK - even though the King was informed of his visit - as he is "busy".

However, the judge gave her sibling, Samantha Markle, the opportunity to partially refile her claim.

The Duchess of Sussex, 41, was accused by Samantha of spreading "demonstrably false and malicious lies" to a "worldwide audience" in the royal's tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021.

A Florida judge has now thrown out the lawsuit, saying the former Suits actress was expressing "an opinion about her childhood and her relationship with her half-sibling" and a statement of pure opinion was "not capable of being proved false".

In court papers, US District Judge Charlene Honeywell wrote: "As a reasonable listener would understand it, defendant merely expresses an opinion about her childhood and her relationship with her half-siblings.

"Thus, the court finds that defendant's statement is not objectively verifiable or subject to empirical proof.... plaintiff cannot plausibly disprove defendant's opinion of her own childhood."

Judge Honeywell yesterday wrote “the court grants the motion to dismiss” in favour of the Duchess of Sussex.

In a dramatic series, the ex-head of the Army says he kept his private audiences with the Queen, 96, secret.

But he adds: “I will break the rule about not divulging what goes on on this one occasion, when she was very clear. She said, ‘My grandsons have taken my shilling, therefore they must do their duty’ – and that was that.

“But it was decided that for William, as heir to the heir, the risk is too great.

“But for his younger brother, the risk was acceptable.”

Ex-Army captain Harry, 38, served two Afghanistan tours from 2007 to 2008, and 2012 to 2013, the latter as an Apache pilot. Prince William, 40, was an officer in the Household Cavalry and later became an RAF Search and Rescue helicopter pilot.

The ITV series, out later this month, also claims Princess Margaret refused to stop listening to the Archers as the late Queen visited her on her deathbed in 2002.

It also says Prince Andrew, 63, was embarrassed the royals long before his friendship with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein came to light.

The five-part series reveals the personal challenges facing the Queen throughout her reign.

Some of the key figures interviewed have never previously spoken on camera. Princess Margaret’s former lady-in-waiting says when the Queen’s sister was dying after a fourth stroke she refused to stop listening to Radio 4’s the Archers when the late monarch arrived.

Lady Anne Glenconner recalls: “I could hear the Queen going upstairs.

“About two minutes later, I heard footsteps coming down the stairs.

“So I said ‘Ma’am, is there anything wrong?’ And she said, ‘Yes. Margaret’s listening to the Archers and every time I say something she just says, ‘Shush’.

“So I went up and said to Princess Margaret, ‘the Queen’s only got a short time’, turning off her wireless, and I brought them tea and left them.”

Archbishop George Carey was one of the last people to see Margaret, 71, alive. He hints she never got over being banned, by the Queen as head of the Church of England, from marrying her first love Peter Towns-end as he was divorced. The cleric says: “I heard she was dying, so I talked to her quietly, said a prayer, anointed her with the oil and she died soon after. A moving occasion.

“But she was sad. Here is a woman who longed for love and the love of her life was forbidden for her.

Prince Harry has claimed Piers Morgan “knew about, encouraged and concealed” illegal targeting of Diana, Princess of Wales when he was editor of the News of the World.

Harry alleges that his mother’s private text messages and phone calls were obtained by journalists working for Rupert Murdoch’s tabloid newspapers before she died, with the information used as the basis for multiple stories in the Sun and the News of the World.

Harry alleged in court documents that this illegal targeting of Diana – as well as Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles – was known about and hidden by Morgan and other editors in the mid-1990s.

Morgan, who now hosts a nightly show on Murdoch’s TalkTV channel, has always denied any direct knowledge of phone hacking during his time as a tabloid newspaper editor. The television presenter has had repeated run-ins with Harry. In 2021, Morgan quit ITV’s Good Morning Britain after making comments about the prince’s wife, Meghan.

Harry lists a number of articles that were published during Morgan’s time as News of the World editor between January 1994 and August 1995. The prince alleges that all were the result of illegal information-gathering.

They include:

“Di’s cranky phone calls to married Oliver; She called 3 times in 9 minutes and hung up as she heard Oliver’s voice”, about Diana’s alleged relationship with the art dealer Oliver Hoare.

“Di’s roam alone”, about Diana flying to the US on holiday and leaving behind princes William and Harry with other members of the royal family.

“Di and Fergie bury the hatchet”, about a private meeting between Diana and the Duchess of York.

“It’s Diana or me; Di: Will’s my dear friend – not my lover; Carling sneaked into palace when boys went out”, about Diana’s alleged relationship with the England rugby player Will Carling.

“Di’s VJ Day fury over Tiggy”, about a supposed dispute between Diana and the royal nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke.

Several of these stories were written by Clive Goodman, the newspaper’s royal correspondent, who would later be sent to prison for hacking Prince William’s voicemails.

One of the stories that is allegedly based on illegally gathered information was written by the News of the World reporter Gary Jones, who is now the editor of the Daily Express.

Harry made the allegations in proposed amendments to his phone-hacking claim against Murdoch’s company News Group Newspapers (NGN), which is being heard at the high court.

He also alleges that journalists working for NGN obtained messages from Diana’s secret personal pager – a device used to receive text messages before the widespread use of mobile phones.

Harry states that a 21-page log of text messages sent to this device in late 1994 by Oliver Hoare were later found in a safe in the office of Tom Crone, a top lawyer at Murdoch’s company.

The messages were said to include Hoare asking Diana whether her children were staying with their grandparents and questioning whether William and Harry were excited to meet members of Take That.

Harry also claims that journalists working for Murdoch’s newspapers intercepted personal phone calls and messages sent by his father, now King Charles, and his stepmother, Camilla.

Morgan has also been linked to other phone-hacking allegations relating to his time as editor of the Mirror between 1995 and 2004. Last year, lawyers suing the Mirror’s parent company alleged that Morgan “must have had knowledge of voicemail interception” during the time he was running the tabloid. Harry has a separate legal case against the publisher of the Mirror, which is due to go to trial next month at the high court.

The television presenter Jeremy Paxman, speaking under oath at the Leveson inquiry, said Morgan once invited him for lunch and explained how a mobile phone’s voicemails could be hacked. Morgan has previously told the Guardian: “I’ve never hacked a phone nor told anybody to hack a phone.”

Amendments to Harry’s legal claim also allege that the former News of the World editors Phil Hall and Bob Bird, and the former Sun editors Stuart Higgins and David Yelland, must also have known about the illegal targeting of Diana during the mid-1990s.

Harry has made clear that he blames the tabloid media for the death of his mother while being chased by paparazzi through Paris. On Tuesday, the high court heard his claim that press intrusion by the Sun and other newspapers led to her choosing to travel without a police escort in order to avoid leaks, ultimately leading to her death in 1997.

Harry suggests that Murdoch’s newspapers concealed their illegal activity, publicly criticising Diana’s “paranoid delusions” about being illegally targeted when in reality “she was under close surveillance and her calls were being unlawfully intercepted” by individuals working for the Sun and News of the World.

Harry also suggests Diana was punished by the newspapers for giving an interview to the BBC’s Panorama in 1995, rather than providing private information to the Sun or News of the World.

Harry previously told the court that he was personally the victim of widespread phone hacking and illegal activity by the Sun and News of the World, while claiming there was a secret deal between the royal household to keep such deals out of court.

Murdoch’s company has always denied any illegal behaviour took place at the Sun and is trying to block Harry’s legal claim on the basis he waited too long to file his legal paperwork.

Meanwhile, another guest remarked how Prince Harry 38, "looked unbelievably proud" of his wife.

The couple had earlier attended an award ceremony in New York on Tuesday evening, where Meghan accepted a prize celebrating feminist champions. The Duke and Duchess, who were also with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, were forced to seek refuge in multiple police stations as they tried to lose the photographers.

It is understood the trio were staying at a friend’s house, but felt unable to return there after the ceremony as they were being followed.

Harry has long had a difficult relationship with the media. He blames press intrusion for causing the death of his mother in a car crash in a tunnel in Paris in 1997 while she was being pursued by paparazzi.

In a US television interview earlier this year he recalled seeing the final photos of her and realizing that the last thing she saw before she died was photographers taking her picture.

Meanwhile, an alleged stalker was arrested outside the couple's Montecito mansion in the early hours of Monday morning, according to TMZ. Kevin Garcia Valdovinos, 29, was arrested when the couple’s security team spotted the man near their home at around 2am on Monday.

It is unclear whether the Duke and Duchess and their two children, Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, one, were at home at the time of the incident.

Police have released a statement after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said they were in a "near catastrophic car chase."

The incident happened after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left an awards ceremony in New York on Tuesday night.

The New York Police Department said in a statement: "On Tuesday evening, May 16, the NYPD assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

“There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries or arrests in regard.”

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess had released a statement saying the "relentless pursuit" lasted more than two hours by half a dozen vehicles.

It said: "Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi.

“While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety.

“Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all involved.”

The couple left the awards in their SUV with a police escort, but as paparazzi followed on motorbikes, cars and electric scooters, they diverted to NYPD’s 19th Precinct on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Once outside, they used the SUV and following police vehicles to block off the road and move the couple into a yellow cab.

However, those on scooters and motorbikes were still able to follow.

According to an eye witness, at one point, the driver of the cab was spoken to police after he was caught up in the melee.

The source said: “As Harry, Meghan and Doria sat in the back of the cab, their taxi became stuck in traffic.

“It was at this moment several snappers who had followed them began to take pictures of them.

“At one point, two police cars were several vehicles behind their taxi with the lights and sirens on, but they were attending another call, not realising what was developing in front."

Sources said Harry’s security detail had launched a probe into the incident to “evaluate the events” that led up to the couple being pursued.

The trio were pursued after leaving the Ziegfeld Theatre in midtown Manhattan where the former actress, 41, was honoured at the Women of Vision Awards.

After climbing into the back of a yellow cab with Meghan in the middle around 10pm, their vehicle was followed by around 12 paparazzi.

As the couple began to be followed, their taxi driver opted not to remain in place but tried to lose the photographers.

One cameraman allegedly hit a car in the pursuit, while another almost ran over a police officer.

At least one of those following is said to have run a red light, reversed down a one-way street and mounted the pavement.

Despite a warning from uniformed officers not to continue, four paparazzi ignored their warnings.

During the incident, Harry, 38, captured the following photographers with his iPhone camera while one of the couple's security sat in the front passenger seat.

The incident came after Meghan picked up the Ms Foundation’s Women of Vision Award, recognising her "global advocacy to empower and advocate on behalf of women and girls".

The ceremony honoured “game-changing” grantee partners and visionary leaders committed to the organisation’s mission of “advancing collective power and creating safe, just and equitable futures for women, girls, and gender-expansive people”.

The duchess received the Ms Foundation’s Women of Vision Award, recognising her “global advocacy to empower and advocate on behalf of women and girls”.

Meghan was presented with the award by renowned journalist and feminist activist Gloria Steinem.

Her acceptance speech closed out the gala where she said: “It’s never too late to start.

“You can be the visionary of your own life… There is still so much work to be done.

“I am a woman who remains inspired and driven by this organisation,” she said, looking over Ms Steinem, who introduced her alongside current foundation chief executive Teresa Younger.

“It allowed me to recognise that part of my greater value and purpose in life was to advocate for those who felt unheard, to stand up to injustice, and to not be afraid of saying what is true and what is just and what is right.”

The World woke up on 27 November, 2017, to some exciting news: American actress and humanitarian Meghan Markle is engaged to Prince Harry of Wales.

Yet not everyone was so pleased. When Kensington Palace announced their engagement, the conservative U.K. magazine The Spectator ran an article arguing that Markle is “unsuitable” for Harry, whose grandmother is the supreme governor of the Church of England, because she is divorced.

It included this choice line: “seventy years ago, Meghan Markle would have been the kind of woman the Prince would have had for a mistress, not a wife.”

That’s a pretty strange thing to argue, considering that King Henry VIII only established the Church of England to “annul” his 24-year marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Even more bizarrely, this isn’t the only way that the stories of Markle and Henry VIII intersect. According to The Telegraph, Henry VIII also beheaded one of Markle’s relatives.

The Telegraph credits this discovery to Michael Reed, “a Australian teacher and amateur historian” who has studied the Royal Family’s ancestry. By his account, Markle is related to Lord Hussey, 1st Baron Hussey of Sleaford. This 15th- and 16th-century royal earned knighthood during the Cornish rebellion of 1497. But when he was unable to put down another rebellion four decades later, Henry VIII called for his land, his wealth, and his head.

Researchers have been scrutinizing Markle’s family tree since last year, when she and Harry revealed they were dating. Markle is a biracial woman with a black mother and a white, Jewish father, and the relation to Lord Hussey comes from her father, Thomas W. Markle.

He is descended from Captain Christopher Hussey, the great-great-great-grandson of Lord Hussey, who is also one of the English colonists who founded Nantucket in the 1600s. The Telegraph suggests Markle and Prince Harry may actually be very distant cousins through a shared ancestor: High Sheriff of County Durham Ralph Bowes, born in the late 15th century.

On the other side, Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, is descended from Africans who were forcibly taken to the Americas to work as slaves in Georgia. This involuntary removal broke up families in a way that makes it difficult, if not impossible, to trace the genealogy of enslaved Africans back as many centuries as Britain’s white royals are able to do.

Markle probably isn’t the first British royal to have African roots; historian and TV producer Marios y Valdes y Cocom has argued that Queen Charlotte of England, who married King George III in the 1760s, was of European and African descent. If true, The Guardian points out this would mean the modern Royal Family already has some African ancestry.

Nevertheless, the news that Markle was dating a member of the House of Windsor was met with racist and sexist coverage in the British press. In November 2016, Harry released a statement through his communications secretary condemning this reaction.

“His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment,” the statement read. “Some of this has been very public—the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments … Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety.”

Clearly, Markle will face hurdles as a royal that even Harry’s mother, Princess Diana—who was famously hounded by the media—did not. But the marriage will set an important precedent for the U.K., similar to the one set by former first lady Michelle Obama in the U.S. While she was still living in the White House in 2016, Michelle Obama said: “I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.”

It was a poignant statement from a woman whose great-great-great-grandmother was born into slavery.

The British crown has its own link to American slavery. The country founded America’s slaveholding colonies, and oncedominated the international slave trade. Like Obama’s grandmother, Markle’s great-great-great-grandfather was also born into slavery and lived through emancipation.

Queen Elizabeth II had refused requests to apologize for Britains’ role in the slave trade (and Prince Harry hasn’t spoken about it either). But the issue will likely surface again as a descendant of slaves moved into the royals.

Now Meghan could be about to join the well-paid bunch as she's proved her credentials as a loyal fan of Dior over the years.

The Duchess of Sussex wore a head-to-toe look from the brand for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee service last year.

And two years ago she carried a Lady Dior bag - the iconic style named after Princess Diana - to a Global Citizen concert in New York.

Harry has also inherited the love of Dior from his mother and wore a custom-made suit from the fashion house to the King's Coronation.

The rumours that Meghan could be the 'Duchess of Dior' come after she and Prince Harry were dubbed "f***ing grifters" by a top Spotify executive after their $25million contract was ended.

But it seems that Meghan's team is ready to fight for more lucrative contracts and a partnership with Dior would be her first fashion brand deal.

According to a source, the Duchess' new agent Ari Emanuel, the chief of talent agency William Morris Endeavor (WME) is pushing Meghan's clout as a top fashion influencer.

A source from WME told the Mail on Sunday : "We knew the Spotify announcement was coming.

"It might be a shock to everyone else but we've been working on the rebranding of Meghan for weeks.

"Ari is the best in the business when it comes to corporate deals and making money.

"He's excited to be representing Meghan and has thrown all his energy into it. The offers have been pouring in, including from other podcast platforms."

The Mirror has contacted Meghan's representatives for comment.

It comes after a top Spotify executive called the royal couple "f***ing grifters".

Bill Simmons, Head of Podcast Innovation and Monetisation at Spotify hit out at the pair in an episode of his own podcast released on Friday.

"The f***ing grifters. That's the podcast we should have launched with them," he said.
"I've got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It's one of my best stories."

The real reason Meghan Markle's podcast has been axed has been revealed as the move appears to be driven by a change in strategy for the company away from big money exclusive deals with celebrities that don't perform and hit listener targets.

Meghan now plans to "develop more content for the Archetypes audience on another platform", her spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal.

A "highly defamatory statement in 'Endgame' by Omid Scobie 'mistakenly' names the member of the Royal Family who allegedly made an offensive comment about the skin colour of Archie, the son of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, before he was born.

Translated passages from the pulled book claim Charles was identified in letters as the royal who speculated on Archie’s skin colour. Another passage makes a more oblique reference to Catherine in connection with the allegation.

It claimed Meghan and Charles exchanged letters about “unconscious bias within the family after it was revealed that the king and Princess of Wales took part in such discussions about Archie”.

A royal author has said an investigation is under way into how the Dutch version of his new book named two senior members of the British royal family alleged to have discussed the skin colour of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s unborn son.

In an edition that has now been withdrawn from bookshelves, King Charles and the Princess of Wales were named as taking part in conversations with Princess Anne about Prince Archie before his birth, according to allegations in the book that have been broadcast on TV programmes in the UK and the Netherlands.
The book claims conversations about Archie related to how it opened up discussions about whether there was “unconscious bias” in the royal family.

BBC Names King and Princess of Wales as Royal Figures at Centre of Racism Row

Radio 4’s Today programme announced the names to its listeners, just an hour after saying the corporation would not be disclosing them.

The decision is understood to have been taken by senior news executives, after multiple British newspapers and broadcasters identified the pair as the royal figures said to have commented on the colour of Prince Archie’s skin.

The names were first made public in the Dutch edition of Omid Scobie’s book Endgame, in what has been described as an error.

After the names spread around the world online, Piers Morgan announced them on his Talk TV show, arguing it was farcical that Dutch readers knew the identities while those in the UK did not

But on Friday morning, Jonny Dymond, the BBC’s royal correspondent, said: “Dutch editions of the book named the King and the Princess of Wales as the two members of the Royal family who allegedly raised the issue of the skin colour of Meghan’s first child.

“The circumstances and context of the discussion and the context in which the questions are raised is not clear.”

Shortly afterwards, Nick Robinson, a presenter on the Today programme, clarified: “To be clear, I told listeners about an hour ago, the BBC was not naming them, we are now naming the King and the Princess of Wales as being at the centre of those allegations.”

It is understood that the decision was finalised by senior news editors at the BBC, and now applies across the news division. The names have since been used on Radio 2 and online.

“King Charles and Catherine, Princess of Wales, were the two royals named in the Dutch book.”

Prince Harry and Queen Camillas' fractured relationship will be examined in a bombshell new TV documentary about her on Channel 4, it was claimed today.

Sources claimed the programme would explore Camillas' 'dynamic with Harry', although it has not yet been named and has no transmission date at this stage.

The Duke of Sussex claimed in his book Spare last January that his stepmother was leaking stories about the Royal Family to the media to bolster her image.

He also labelled her 'dangerous' and a 'villain' and claimed she had 'sacrificed him' to improve her reputation - allegations that are likely to be examined in the new show.

A TV insider told The Sun: 'Although this documentary will focus on various elements of Camilla as our new 'Queen', her dynamic with Harry is tackled in the new show.

That is likely to be one of the subject areas gaining the greatest attention and these Channel 4 documentaries on the royals aren't afraid to go where other profiles often fear to tread.

The documentary is separate to another that Camilla will star in on domestic and sexual abuse which is being made by the production company Love Monday and has seen Her Majesty being followed by a film crew at several recent events.

In Spare, Harry wrote of Camilla: 'I have complex feelings about gaining a step-parent who I thought had recently sacrificed me on her personal PR altar.'

Harry also said that he and his brother Prince William had 'begged' their father King Charles III, then Prince Charles, not to marry Camilla because they feared she would become their 'wicked stepmother'.

In another blow, Harry described Camilla as 'dangerous' and a 'villain' who left 'bodies in the street' in her desire to change the public's perception of her.

In a TV interview to promote the book last January with Anderson Cooper on CBS News show 60 Minutes, Harry elaborated on his claims.

The Duke said: 'She was a third person in their [my parents'] marriage, she needed to rehabilitate her image.

'That made her dangerous because of the connections that she was forging within the British press.

'Because of the connections that she was forging… there was open willingness on both sides to trade information.

'And with a family built on hierarchy, and with her on the way to being Queen Consort, there was gonna be people or bodies left in the street because of that.'

Three months after the book's publication in April, an aide told The Sunday Times of Camilla's response to Harry's claims, saying: 'It was not stamping of feet or gnashing of teeth – it was much more of an eye-roll response.'

It comes after Channel 4 documentary Diana: The Truth Behind The Interview in October 2020 looked at allegations that Martin Bashir used forged bank statements to convince Princess Diana to carry out her famous interview with Panorama in 1995.

This prompted an investigation which found in May 2021 that the BBC fell short of 'high standards of integrity and transparency' and Mr Bashir acted in a 'deceitful' way. It also found an internal probe by the BBC in 1996 was 'woefully ineffective'.

Hugh Grant Settles Court Claim Against Sun Publisher For Enormous Sum

Hugh Grant has said he has settled a high court claim against the publisher of the Sun for “an enormous sum”.

The actor had accused the Rupert Murdoch-owned Sun of phone hacking, unlawful information-gathering, landline tapping, bugging his phone and burgling his flat and office. His case was due to go to trial at London’s high court in January 2025, alongside those of other high-profile individuals including Prince Harry and the Labour peer Doreen Lawrence.

His decision to settle the claim is a significant blow to the wider case against the Sun, which Grant, Harry and others had accused of illegally blagging medical records. They also said key figures had lied and destroyed evidence related to the case. The actor had brought legal action against News Group Newspapers (NGN) only in relation to the Sun; he previously settled a claim with the publisher in 2012 relating to the News of the World.

Last month, Harry’s lawyers alleged that Murdoch had “turned a blind eye” to an extensive cover-up of wrongdoing at his newspapers, arguing that the 93-year-old billionaire oversaw a “culture of impunity” at News Group Newspapers (NGN).

In a three-day hearing in advance of the trial scheduled for January 2025, Harry, Grant and others asked the judge for permission to change details of their case against NGN, including allegations that there was a cover-up by senior executives.

The high court in London heard on Wednesday that there were 42 outstanding claims against the publisher, with some due to be heard at a trial in January 2025.

Writing on X on Wednesday, Grant said he had been forced to settle or face a legal bill of £10m. Strict rules about costs in civil litigation mean that if Grant had not settled and had won the case his legal costs could have far outstripped any damages awarded to him. In civil cases, if the damages awarded to a successful claimant are less than the settlement amount offered by a defendant, the claimant may have to pay the legal costs for all sides. Losing the case could make a claimant liable for damages and costs.

Grant said the Sun had offered him “an enormous sum of money” to keep the matter out of court.

“I don’t want to accept this money or settle. I would love to see all the allegations that they deny tested in court,” he said. “But the rules around civil litigation mean that if I proceed to trial and the court awards me damages that are even a penny less than the settlement offer, I would have to pay the legal costs of both sides.

“My lawyers tell me that that is exactly what would most likely happen here. Rupert Murdoch’s lawyers are very expensive. So even if every allegation is proven in court, I would still be liable for something approaching £10m in costs. I’m afraid I am shying at that fence.”

Grant said that the money he received from NGN, the publisher of the Sun and the now-defunct News of the World, would be “repurposed” via press reform campaign groups such as Hacked Off to help fund the “general campaign to expose the worst excesses of our oligarch-owned press”.

Grant has been a thorn in the side of the Murdoch-owned empire for more than a decade, since the Guardian exposed the phone-hacking scandal that led to the closure of the News of the World in 2011.

The star of Notting Hill and Love Actually played a prominent role during the Leveson inquiry into press standards and has been the public face of the Hacked Off campaign since it launched at the height of the scandal.

“Murdoch’s settlement money has a stink and I refuse to let this be hush money,” Grant said on Wednesday. “I have spent the best part of 12 years fighting for a free press that does not distort the truth, abuse ordinary members of the public or hold elected MPs to ransom in pursuit of newspaper barons’ personal profit and political power.”

The Sun has paid a high price as a result of the fallout from the phone-hacking scandal. It lost £66m last year, in part because of the high cost of paying damages to victims of illegal information-gathering.

In his lengthy Instagram post on Monday, the presenter of Amazon Prime's The Grand Tour and Clarkson's Farm and ITV's Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, said he usually reads what he's written before filing his copy, but he was home alone that day and in a hurry. "So when I'd finished, I just pressed send. And then, when the column appeared the next day, the land mine exploded." He said he picked up a copy of The Sun and quickly realised he had "completely messed up". "You are sweaty and cold at the same time. And your head pounds. And you feel sick. I couldn't believe what I was reading. Had I really said that? It was horrible." He said he had been thinking of a scene in Games of Thrones when he wrote about imagining the duchess being abused in the street, but had forgotten to mention it. "So it looked like I was actually calling for revolting violence to rain down on Meghan's head." In a statement, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said Clarkson addressed his correspondence solely to Prince Harry. "While a new public apology has been issued today by Mr Clarkson, what remains to be addressed is his long-standing pattern of writing articles that spread hate rhetoric, dangerous conspiracy theories and misogyny," the spokesperson said. "Unless each of his other pieces were also written 'in a hurry', as he states, it is clear that this is not an isolated incident shared in haste, but rather a series of articles shared in hate," they added. In a recent interview with ITV, Prince Harry criticised Clarkson as well as the Royal Family for not commenting on the matter at the time. In his statement, Clarkson added that he had "tried to explain" himself. "But still, there were calls for me to be sacked and charged with a hate crime. More than 60 MPs demanded action to be taken. It was then that he "wrote to everyone who works with me saying how sorry I was" as well as emailing the duke and duchess. I said I was baffled by what they had been saying on TV but that the language I'd used in my column was disgraceful and that I was profoundly sorry." He also acknowledged that his own daughter Emily had been among his critics. Variety is reporting that Amazon Prime "is likely to be parting ways" with Clarkson after 2024, when his shows that are already in the pipeline are due to end. Amazon declined to comment. The New York Police Department said in a statement: "On Tuesday evening, May 16, the NYPD assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries or arrests in regard.” A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess had released a statement saying the "relentless pursuit" lasted more than two hours by half a dozen vehicles. It said: "Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi. “While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety. “Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all involved.” The couple left the awards in their SUV with a police escort, but as paparazzi followed on motorbikes, cars and electric scooters, they diverted to NYPD’s 19th Precinct on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Once outside, they used the SUV and following police vehicles to block off the road and move the couple into a yellow cab. However, those on scooters and motorbikes were still able to follow. According to an eye witness, at one point, the driver of the cab was spoken to police after he was caught up in the melee. The source said: “As Harry, Meghan and Doria sat in the back of the cab, their taxi became stuck in traffic. “It was at this moment several snappers who had followed them began to take pictures of them. “At one point, two police cars were several vehicles behind their taxi with the lights and sirens on, but they were attending another call, not realising what was developing in front." BBC 4 JUNE 2023 HISTORICAL REPORT: The World woke up on 27 November, 2017, to some exciting news: American actress and humanitarian Meghan Markle is engaged to Prince Harry of Wales. Yet not everyone was so pleased. When Kensington Palace announced their engagement, the conservative U.K. magazine The Spectator ran an article arguing that Markle is “unsuitable” for Harry, whose grandmother is the supreme governor of the Church of England, because she is divorced. It included this choice line: “seventy years ago, Meghan Markle would have been the kind of woman the Prince would have had for a mistress, not a wife.” That’s a pretty strange thing to argue, considering that King Henry VIII only established the Church of England to “annul” his 24-year marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Even more bizarrely, this isn’t the only way that the stories of Markle and Henry VIII intersect. According to The Telegraph, Henry VIII also beheaded one of Markle’s relatives. The Telegraph credits this discovery to Michael Reed, “a Australian teacher and amateur historian” who has studied the Royal Family’s ancestry. By his account, Markle is related to Lord Hussey, 1st Baron Hussey of Sleaford. This 15th- and 16th-century royal earned knighthood during the Cornish rebellion of 1497. But when he was unable to put down another rebellion four decades later, Henry VIII called for his land, his wealth, and his head. Researchers have been scrutinizing Markle’s family tree since last year, when she and Harry revealed they were dating. Markle is a biracial woman with a black mother and a white, Jewish father, and the relation to Lord Hussey comes from her father, Thomas W. Markle. He is descended from Captain Christopher Hussey, the great-great-great-grandson of Lord Hussey, who is also one of the English colonists who founded Nantucket in the 1600s. The Telegraph suggests Markle and Prince Harry may actually be very distant cousins through a shared ancestor: High Sheriff of County Durham Ralph Bowes, born in the late 15th century. 1533 portrait of Lord John Hussey, 1st Baron Hussey of Sleaford. On the other side, Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, is descended from Africans who were forcibly taken to the Americas to work as slaves in Georgia. This involuntary removal broke up families in a way that makes it difficult, if not impossible, to trace the genealogy of enslaved Africans back as many centuries as Britain’s white royals are able to do. Markle probably isn’t the first British royal to have African roots; historian and TV producer Marios y Valdes y Cocom has argued that Queen Charlotte of England, who married King George III in the 1760s, was of European and African descent. If true, The Guardian points out this would mean the modern Royal Family already has some African ancestry. Nevertheless, the news that Markle was dating a member of the House of Windsor was met with racist and sexist coverage in the British press. In November 2016, Harry released a statement through his communications secretary condemning this reaction. “His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment,” the statement read. “Some of this has been very public—the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments … Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety.” Clearly, Markle will face hurdles as a royal that even Harry’s mother, Princess Diana—who was famously hounded by the media—did not. But the marriage will set an important precedent for the U.K., similar to the one set by former first lady Michelle Obama in the U.S. While she was still living in the White House in 2016, Michelle Obama said: “I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.” It was a poignant statement from a woman whose great-great-great-grandmother was born into slavery. The British crown has its own link to American slavery. The country founded America’s slaveholding colonies, and oncedominated the international slave trade. Like Obama’s grandmother, Markle’s great-great-great-grandfather was also born into slavery and lived through emancipation. Queen Elizabeth II had refused requests to apologize for Britains’ role in the slave trade (and Prince Harry hasn’t spoken about it either). Now Meghan could be about to join the well-paid bunch as she's proved her credentials as a loyal fan of Dior over the years. And two years ago she carried a Lady Dior bag - the iconic style named after Princess Diana - to a Global Citizen concert in New York. Harry has also inherited the love of Dior from his mother and wore a custom-made suit from the fashion house to the King's Coronation. The rumours that Meghan could be the 'Duchess of Dior' come after she and Prince Harry were dubbed "fing grifters" by a top Spotify executive after their $25million contract was ended.* Meghan Markle wore Dior to the Platinum Jubilee celebrations last year But it seems that Meghan's team is ready to fight for more lucrative contracts and a partnership with Dior would be her first fashion brand deal. According to a source, the Duchess' new agent Ari Emanuel, the chief of talent agency William Morris Endeavor (WME) is pushing Meghan's clout as a top fashion influencer. A source from WME told the Mail on Sunday : "We knew the Spotify announcement was coming. "It might be a shock to everyone else but we've been working on the rebranding of Meghan for weeks. "Ari is the best in the business when it comes to corporate deals and making money. "He's excited to be representing Meghan and has thrown all his energy into it. The offers have been pouring in, including from other podcast platforms." The Mirror has contacted Meghan's representatives for comment. It comes after a top Spotify executive called the royal couple "f*ing grifters". Bill Simmons, Head of Podcast Innovation and Monetisation at Spotify hit out at the pair in an episode of his own podcast released on Friday. "The fing grifters. That's the podcast we should have launched with them," he said. "I've got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It's one of my best stories." The real reason Meghan Markle's podcast has been axed has been revealed as the move appears to be driven by a change in strategy for the company away from big money exclusive deals with celebrities that don't perform and hit listener targets.
