R. Kelly’s Trial Begins: Here Are The Main Takeaways

Topline

Prosecutors accused R&B singer R. Kelly of being a “predator” who used his fame to coerce victims while Kelly’s defense called the allegations a “mess of lies” during the opening of Kelly’s trial on nine counts of sex trafficking and racketeering Wednesday, the result of multiple acusations spanning two decades across three different states.

R Kelly Appears In Court in Chicago For Status Hearing

Key Facts

At the federal trial New York, Jerhonda Pace, one of Kelly’s accusers, testified that she entered into a sexual relationship with Kelly at the age of 16, though she had lied and told Kelly she was older.

After their first sexual contact, Pace revealed the truth to Kelly, who she said told her “to continue telling people I was 19 and act like I was 21.”

Pace said Kelly took her virginity and the two continued a sexual relationship over the next 6 months, during which she said Kelly physically and emotionally abused her by restricting her movements and taking her phone away.

Lead prosecutor Maria Cruz Melendez, deputy chief of the civil rights division of the Eastern District, told the jury in her opening statement that Kelly used his fame to entice victims and coerced them into sexual acts with him, saying he “learned that he could take advantage of this access.”

She also alleged Kelly enacted his control on his inner circle of bodyguards, managers, personal assistants and drivers, who assisted in recruiting victims and helped facilitate a criminal enterprise system.

Cruz Melendez highlighted new evidence against Kelly submitted last month that alleged he married singer Aaliyah Haughton so she would be unable to testify against him about any alleged sexual misconduct, and he obtained a fake ID for her when she was 15 so they could get married.

Kelly’s defense lawyer, Nicole Blank Becker, said in her opening statement the allegations against him were a “mess of lies,” alleging he did not recruit women, but that fans willingly came to Kelly.

Becker told the jury the women “knew exactly what they were getting into,” and Kelly was transparent about dating multiple women, according to The Independent.

R. Kelly pled not guilty to all charges last year.

Crucial Quote

"This case is about a predator," Cruz Melendez said in her opening statement Wednesday. "... A man who for decades used his fame and his popularity in order to target girls, boys, and young women for his own sexual gratification."

Big Number

24. That’s the total number of criminal charges against R. Kelly in three states, New York, Illinois and Minnesota. Along with the nine charges in New York, the singer also faces 13 charges of child pornography and obstruction of justice in Chicago, with that trial date still waiting to be set. He also faces two criminal charges of prostitution with a minor in Minnesota.

Key Background

The charges against R. Kelly, whose real name is Robert Kelly, were filed in 2019, but the trial was delayed multiple times due to the pandemic. He faces one charge of racketeering and eight charges of violating the Mann Act, which criminalizes transporting women across state lines for the purpose of prostitution. Multiple women came forward with the allegations against Kelly following the “Me Too” movement in 2018 and the “Surviving R. Kelly” documentary released in 2019. Kelly has denied all allegations against him. Prior to the trial, Kelly’s lawyers filed a motion to dismiss some charges, but were unsuccessful. This isn’t the first time the R&B singer has gone on trial. He was previously charged with child pornography in 2008, but was acquitted. The federal trial in New York is expected to go on for about a month, and Kelly could face decades in prison if he is found guilty.

R. Kelly Found GUILTY in Sex Trafficking Trial

US singer R Kelly has been found guilty of exploiting his superstar status to run a scheme to sexually abuse women and children over two decades.

R. Kelly 'is the worst, a dangerous sexual predator.'

Eleven accusers, nine women and two men, took the stand over the searing six-week trial to describe sexual humiliation and violence at his hands.

After two days of deliberation, the jury found Kelly guilty on all the charges he was facing.

Sentencing is due on 4 May and he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.

R. Kelly ‘abused Aaliyah when she was 13 or 14’

The jury found Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was the ringleader of a violent and coercive scheme that lured women and children for him to sexually abuse.

The singer - most famous for the award-winning song I Believe I Can Fly - was also found to have trafficked women between different US states.

Along with eight counts of sex trafficking, Kelly was found guilty of racketeering - a charge normally used against organised crime associations.

During the trial prosecutors detailed how his managers, security guards and other entourage members worked to assist him in his criminal enterprise.

One woman who testified that Kelly imprisoned, drugged and raped her said in a written statement after the verdict that she had "been hiding" from Kelly due to threats made against her since she went public with her accusations.

"I'm ready to start living my life free from fear and to start the healing process," added the woman, identified in court as Sonja.

Another woman who testified in court, Lizette Martinez, said she was "relieved" by the verdict.

"I'm so proud of the women who were able to speak their truths," she added.

Legal documents have revealed the mental torment that Kelly subjected his victims to. They were not allowed to eat or use the bathroom without his permission, he controlled what clothes they wore and made them call him "Daddy".

Gloria Allred, a lawyer who represented several victims, told reporters: "I've been practicing law for 47 years. During this time, I've pursued many sexual predators who have committed crimes against women and children.

"Of all the predators that I have pursued, Mr Kelly is the worst."

At a news conference outside the court on Monday, prosecutor Jacquelyn Kasulis said that the jury had sent a message to other powerful men like Kelly.

"No matter how long it takes, the long arm of the law will catch up with you," said Ms Kasulis.

The verdict comes 13 years after Kelly was acquitted of child pornography charges after a trial in the state of Illinois.

Many of the allegations heard in the trial were first laid out in the 2019 documentary Surviving R Kelly.

Victims were sometimes selected from his concert audiences, or were enticed to join him after being offered help with their fledgling music careers after chance encounters with the singer.

But after joining his entourage, they found that they were subjected to strict rules and aggressively punished if they violated what his team had dubbed "Rob's rules".

A swift verdict after decades of waiting

Analysis box by Nada Tawfik, New York correspondent

This was a swift decision by the jury of seven men and five women.

They took nine hours over two days to reach a verdict, meaning they must have been fairly united in their examination of the evidence.

Right before the verdict was read, a handful of R. Kelly's fans blasted his music outside the courthouse. I asked them how they felt after he was found guilty. They were visibly sad and told me they still supported him.

On the other hand, R. Kelly's victims are feeling some measure of comfort.

One - who remained anonymous throughout the trial - issued a statement saying she felt like she could now start the healing process. This verdict no doubt hinged on their testimony and willingness to recount personal trauma.

For decades these black women kept asking when they would be heard, when their voices would matter. This conviction is their Me Too victory.

During the federal trial, the court also heard how he had illegally obtained paperwork to marry underage singer Aaliyah, who died in a plane accident in August 2001 after marrying Kelly at age 15.

Kelly's lawyer Deveraux Cannick told reporters that the singer did not expect to be found guilty.

"The government cherry-picked their version that they thought would support the continuation of the narrative," said Mr Cannick. "Why would he expect this verdict given all the inconsistencies that we saw?"

Kelly is separately facing trial in Chicago on child pornography and obstruction charges. He is also due to face sex abuse charges in Illinois and Minnesota.

At least two former Kelly associates have pleaded guilty in separate cases related to attempts to silence Kelly's accusers.

R Kelly Sentenced to 30 Years on Sex Trafficking and Racketeering Charges

US singer R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for using his celebrity status to sexually abuse children and women.

R Kelly child abuse survivors 'grateful' for 30 year prison sentencing

30 Jun 2022 Guardian News

The R&B artist, 55, was convicted last September in New York of racketeering and sex trafficking crimes.

He had faced years of allegations and the judge on Wednesday said he had an "indifference to human suffering".

Lawyers for the singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, say he will appeal.

Ahead of his sentencing, a handful of women took the stand to confront Kelly.

A woman identified only as Angela called the singer a Pied Piper who "grew in wickedness" with every new victim, while others who were not named testified he had broken their spirits.

"I literally wished I would die because of how you made me feel," said one.

Dressed in prison khakis and dark glasses, Kelly declined to make a statement of his own and did not react as the verdict was handed down.

US District Judge Ann Donnelly said the celebrity had used sex as a weapon, forcing his victims to do unspeakable things and saddling some with sexually transmitted diseases.

"You taught them that love is enslavement and violence," she said.

The court heard how Kelly - known for hit songs like I Believe I Can Fly and Ignition - used his influence to lure women and children into sexual abuse over two decades.

Jurors at his six-week trial in Brooklyn heard how he trafficked women between different US states, assisted by managers, security guards and other members of his entourage.

The court also heard how Kelly had illegally obtained paperwork to marry singer Aaliyah when she was 15 in 1994, seven years before the singer died in a plane crash.

The certificate, leaked at the time, listed Aaliyah's age as 18. The marriage was annulled months later.

Jovante Cunningham, a former backup singer for Kelly, said she never believed this day would come.

"There wasn't a day in my life up until this moment that I actually believed that the judicial system would come through for black and brown girls," she told reporters.

"I stand here very proud of my judicial system, very proud of my fellow survivors and very pleased with the outcome."

Federal prosecutors had recommended that Kelly be sentenced to more than 25 years in prison, given the seriousness of his crimes and "the need to protect the public from further crimes".

But his lawyers called for a sentence of 10 years - the mandatory minimum for his conviction - or less.

They portrayed Kelly as growing up poor in a household rife with domestic violence and suffering sexual abuse from a young age.

They said he was "devastated" by the sentence and planned to appeal.

Lizzette Martinez, who met Kelly when she was 17, said that there were "so many things he could have done to stop himself."

"He had all the resources; we don't have resources like that. He could have gotten help," she told BBC News.

She said he avoided justice for years due to the "power of celebrity".

"I believe that he was just making so much money for so many powerful people that they protected him."

Kelly has been in custody since he was indicted by federal prosecutors in New York and Chicago in July 2019.

His three years behind bars have been eventful, including a beating from a fellow inmate in 2020 and a bout with Covid-19 earlier this year.

The singer faces further legal action in August, when he goes on trial again, this time in Chicago on child sex images and obstruction charges.

He is also due to face sex abuse charges in courts in Illinois and Minnesota.

R. Kelly Convicted of Child Pornography Charges

Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly, who is serving a 30-year sentence for sex offenses, was found guilty of child pornography and other charges on Wednesday after a month-long trial in his hometown of Chicago.

Daily Mail UK 15 SEP 2022

Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly, seen here in a 2019 file photo, was found guilty of child pornography charges

Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was convicted of three counts of producing child pornography and three counts of enticement of a minor.

The three-time Grammy Award-winner was acquitted by a federal jury of seven other counts, including charges that he obstructed justice in a previous trial.

Kelly and two ex-associates had been accused of rigging the singer's 2008 child pornography trial in which a jury delivered a verdict of not guilty.

Kelly's former manager, Derrel McDavid, and an ex-employee, Milton "June" Brown, were tried alongside the singer in the latest trial and were also acquitted of obstruction charges.

The 12-person jury took around 11 hours over two days to deliver the verdicts, which could add additional decades in prison to the 30 years Kelly is already serving.

A minor victim declined to testify in the 2008 trial because of alleged threats and bribes, but the now 37-year-old woman took the witness stand this time.

"The guilty verdicts finally hold Robert Kelly accountable for the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl, and they help right the wrongs that occurred in a prior prosecution in Cook County," the US attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, John Lausch, said of the 2008 trial.

"The damage Mr. Kelly inflicted on his victims is immeasurable. I want to thank the victims for their strength, perseverance and courage in coming forward to testify at trial," he added.

No sentencing date was immediately set. Kelly faces 10 to 90 years in prison for these new convictions, Lausch's office said in a statement.

Excerpts from videos depicting sexual abuse by Kelly of girls as young as 14 were played for the jury during the trial.

Kelly was convicted in New York in September last year of recruiting teenagers and women for sex.

The "I Believe I Can Fly" artist was found guilty of eight charges of sex trafficking and one count of racketeering in the New York case.

- Faces further charges -

Kelly's conviction in New York was widely seen as a milestone for the #MeToo movement: it was the first major sex abuse trial where the majority of the accusers were Black women.

It was also the first time Kelly faced criminal consequences for the abuse he was rumored for decades to have inflicted on women and children.

Kelly also faces prosecution in two other state jurisdictions.

In the New York case, his accusers described events that often mirrored one another.

Many of the alleged victims said they had met the singer at concerts or mall performances and were then handed slips of paper with Kelly's contact details by members of his entourage.

Several said they were told he could bolster their music industry aspirations.

But prosecutors argued all were instead "indoctrinated" into Kelly's world -- groomed for sex at his whim and kept in line by "coercive means of control," including isolation and cruel disciplinary measures.

Core to the New York case was Kelly's relationship with the late singer Aaliyah.

Kelly wrote and produced her first album -- "Age Ain't Nothin' But A Number" -- before illegally marrying her when she was just 15 because he feared he had impregnated her.

His former manager admitted in court to bribing a worker to obtain fake identification allowing the union, which was later annulled.
