A man arrested for stealing bones from a cemetery has admitted to trying to eat human meat.

Self-confessed cannibal Israel dos Santos Assis said he fried a piece of a person's leg, seasoned it with lemon and vinegar before chewing on it. He made the confession on a video recorded by police during an interrogation. The footage was later to local media.

In the clip, 22-year-old Assis said: “I put it in a dish of frijoles beans but didn’t swallow it. I chewed on it and then threw it away. It was just to try it. It was sweet but you can’t swallow it.” His shock confession came after police in the north-east Brazilian state of Bahia held him for allegedly stealing bones from a cemetery.

Local reports say he told cops he stole them to order in exchange for a payment equivalent to £25, from three people who wanted to use the bones as part of a black magic ceremony. He used the money to buy shoes and sandwiches, as well as getting his hair cut.

Israel, nicknamed Pinguim which is Portuguese for Penguin, was allegedly paid upfront but caught red-handed as he delivered the bones to the buyer. It was not immediately clear, if he obtained the human meat he claimed to have tried from the same cemetery in Sao Francisco do Conde near the city of Salvador.

The video emerged following Israel’s release on bail pending an ongoing investigation. He faces charges of desecrating a tomb. His lawyer Luan Santos told local media after he was released from custody he suffered from mental health issues and was taking anti-depressants.

He said that as the criminal case against him advanced, he would be demanding psychiatric tests to ascertain whether his client was fully aware of what he was doing.
