Staunch Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny is alive and is being held in a penal colony in Siberia, according to his spokesperson.

'We found Alexei Navalny,' Kira Yarmysh said on Monday, adding that he is now in northern Russia.

His team had not been able to contact him since December 6, after he was moved from a previous prison.

Yarmysh said Navalny had been moved to the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District.

Navalnys' new home, known as 'the Polar Wolf' colony and located above the Arctic Circle, is considered to be one of the toughest prisons in Russia.

Winters are harsh and temperatures are due to drop to around minus 28 Celsius there over the next week.

'His lawyer saw him today. Alexei is fine,' Yarmysh wrote on Telegram.

Navalny had previously been held at the IK-6 facility Melekhovo in the Vladimir region of central Russia, 235 km (145 miles) east of Moscow, but his lawyers said they had not been able to reach him over the last three weeks.

Navalny has been imprisoned since 2021 and is serving a 19-year sentence on charges of extremism.

Yarmysh said Russian authorities were set on isolating Navalny and 'trying to make his life as unbearable as possible'.

'This colony is very distant, it is very difficult to access it and for lawyers, it will be very difficult to go there and to see Alexei,' she said.

Navalny's aide Ivan Zhadov said that his move highlighted how 'the system deals with political prisoners, trying to isolate and suppress them'.

His team had become increasingly concerned after he failed to appear at several court hearings.

They were particularly alarmed when he could not be found because he had been ill and was reportedly being denied food and kept in an unventilated cell.

The town in which Navalny is being held is about 100 kilometres (60 miles) from Vorkuta, whose coal mines were among the harshest of the Soviet Gulag prison-camp system.

'It is almost impossible to get to this colony; it is almost impossible to even send letters there. This is the highest possible level of isolation from the world,' Navalny's chief strategist, Leonid Volkov, said on X.

Transfers within Russia's prison system are shrouded in secrecy and inmates can disappear from contact for several weeks.

Yarmysh said the transfer was connected with the campaign for the Russian presidential election in March.

'They deliberately sent him to this particular colony precisely in order to isolate Alexei as much as possible, so as not to give him any opportunity to communicate with the outside world,' she said.

'This is all happening precisely because Alexei, despite the fact that he is in prison, is still the main opponent of Vladimir Putin ... It is not surprising that they began to transfer him to another colony right now, so that he could not interfere with Putin's campaign.'

Navalny earned admiration from Russia's disparate opposition for voluntarily returning to Russia in 2021 from Germany, where he had been treated for what Western laboratory tests showed was an attempt to poison him with a nerve agent.

His supporters cast him as a future leader of Russia who will one day walk free from jail to lead his country, though it is unclear how much popular support Navalny has inside Russia.

The authorities view him and his supporters as extremists with links to the CIA intelligence agency who they say are seeking to destabilise Russia. They have outlawed his movement, forcing many of his followers to flee abroad.

While Putin's reelection is all but certain, given his overwhelming control over the country's political scene and a widening crackdown on dissent, Navalny's supporters and other critics hope to use the campaign to erode public support for the Kremlin leader and his military action in Ukraine.

Before his arrest in 2021, Navalny campaigned against official corruption and organised major anti-Kremlin protests.

He has since received three prison terms and spent months in isolation in Penal Colony No. 6 for alleged minor infractions.

He has rejected all charges against him as politically motivated.

The United States expressed serious concern on Monday about Navalny's detention, as it urged Moscow to end the 'escalating repression' of dissidents.

The State Department said it welcomed reports that Navalny has been located after his whereabouts were unknown for more than two weeks.

'However, we remain deeply concerned for Mr. Navalny's wellbeing and the conditions of his unjust detention,' a spokesperson said in a statement, adding that US officials condemn the 'malicious targeting' of the 47-year-old.
