Oh Crap! re: UK Prime Minister & Health Minister Have Covid-19.

Boris Johnson Tests Positive for Coronavirus and is Self Isolating in Downing Street

A Downing Street spokesperson said Boris Johnson was tested after experiencing mild symptoms of coronavirus. He will continue to lead the government's response while self-isolating.

Daily Mirror UK, 27MAR 2020

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tested positive for coronavirus and is self-isolating in Downing St.

Mr Johnson revealed the news in a tweet after developing symptoms in the last 24 hours but insisted he would continue to lead the government through the crisis.

The PM chaired this morning's Covid-19 meeting via videolink from his flat above Number 11.

It raises fears that other key Downing St staff may have been exposed - and prominent members of the Cabinet, including the Health Secretary and the Chancellor.

No 10 staff do not have to self-isolate unless they show symptoms and a Downing St spokesman said he was "not aware" of any further testing of Cabinet ministers.

Anyone showing signs of coronavirus, which include a temperature and a persistent dry cough, have been instructed to self-isolate for seven days, and everyone living in their household should do the same for a two-week period.

Mr Johnson received his test results at midnight last night after being tested late yesterday afternoon.

He will self-isolate for seven days in No 11 Downing St, normally home to the Chancellor Rishi Sunak, where a video conferencing system has been installed.

A spokesman confirmed that the doors between No 10 and No 11 would be closed and Downing Street would follow the strict guidelines on how they would interact with the PM.

The spokesman said meals and work would be left at the door of the Prime Minister's flat.

He added: "Number 11 in its entirety will serve as the Prime Minister's office and his home - he lives above Number 11 in the flat.

"The doors between Number 10 and Number 11 have been closed off to all other staff who work in the building.

"The PM will work from the office and the study in Number 11, which has been kindly vacated by the Chancellor.

"Full video conferencing facilities have been installed in those downstairs rooms in Number 11.

"All Number 10 staff will observe Public Health England guidelines on contact with the PM and will of course remain two metres apart from him at all times if they were to have any contact."

Last week the Government confirmed that Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab would take over from the PM if at any point he was incapacitated.

In a video message Mr Johnson said: "Over the last 24 hours I have developed mild symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus.

"I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government's response via video-conference as we fight this virus."

Mr Johnson, 55, posted a video on Twitter to say that people should "be in no doubt that I can continue thanks to the wizardry of modern technology to communicate with all my top team to lead the national fightback against coronavirus".

It is not known whether he is staying with his fiancee, Carrie Symonds, who is several months pregnant.

Ms Symonds falls into the group of vulnerable people urged to avoid contact with those with symptoms of Covid-19.

Downing St would not comment on if Ms Symonds was with Mr Johnson in the No 11 flat, but it is understood that she is not.

Ms Symonds, who is expecting the couple's baby in the summer, is also advised to take social distancing seriously.

While pregnant women do not appear more likely to contract coronavirus than the general population, pregnancy itself alters the body's immune system and response to viral infections in general.

Guidance updated on Thursday from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) says viral infections can "occasionally be related to more severe symptoms and this will be the same for Covid-19".

It says that, while the risks are small overall, health professionals should look out for more severe symptoms of Covid-19 in pregnant women who test positive, such as pneumonia and a lack of oxygen.

But the RCOG says the current expert opinion is that unborn babies are unlikely to be exposed to Covid-19 during pregnancy.

It is thought Mr Johnson last saw the Queen on March 11 when the monarch held her weekly audience with the Prime Minister at Buckingham Palace.

Their following meeting, held on March 18, was conducted via telephone as have their subsequent conversations.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman confirmed the Queen last saw Mr Johnson just over two weeks ago.

He said: "Her Majesty the Queen remains in good health. The Queen last saw the Prime Minister on the 11th March and is following all the appropriate advice with regards to her welfare."

Rishi Sunak, is not self-isolating, a Treasury source said.

When Britain clapped health workers on Thursday evening, Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak came out of separate entrances on Downing Street and did not come into close contact, according to a photographer at the scene.

Confirming the news, a Downing Street spokesperson said: “After experiencing mild symptoms yesterday, the Prime Minister was tested for coronavirus on the personal advice of England’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Whitty.

“The test was carried out in No 10 by NHS staff and the result of the test was positive.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan posted: "Sorry to hear this and hope you feel better soon. Thank you for everything your Government is doing to help us fight this. This is a reminder that anyone can get £COVID19. We must all follow the rules and stay at home to support our amazing NHS staff to save lives."

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford tweeted: "I am sorry to read this & I hope @BorisJohnson makes a speedy recovery. This sadly shows nobody is immune. Everybody must follow the advise on social distancing, non essential work must not take place. We need to take all measures to isolate if need be."

Former chancellor Sajid Javid wrote: "Whole Javid family and country thinking of you @BorisJohnson & @carriesymonds. Thank you for your strong leadership at a time of crisis. Get well soon!"

Jeremy Hunt, Matt Han****'s predecessor as health secretary, posted: "Thoughts and prayers of whole nation with @BorisJohnson having tested positive for coronavirus.

"We are so grateful for your strong leadership at this time of crisis and know you will back with your trademark optimism before long! Thinking of you and Carrie."

Earlier on Friday, Labour deputy leadership candidate Angela Rayner confirmed she has quarantined herself after developing Covid-19 symptoms.

Ms Rayner posted on Twitter: "I am now in self isolation as I have the symptoms of coronavirus - they started last night and have gradually got worse.

"I will be a bit quieter than usual but will still be keeping in touch with people as best as I can."

The timing of the Ashton-under-Lyne MP's isolation means she will be permitted to leave her house by the time the leadership result is announced next Saturday.

Mr Johnson was last seen on Thursday night standing outside No 10 as part of a nationwide thank you to NHS staff.

There are more than 11,600 confirmed cases of coronavirus cases in the UK, and 578 people have died.

Prince Charles also tested positive for coronavirus this week, but the 71-year-old, "remains in good health".

Who Runs The Country While the PM is in Quarantine?

The PM is still "continuing to lead the government’s response to coronavirus.”

But he'll be self-isolating in Number 10 as per the government guidance.

When the Prime Minister is away or unable to perform his duties, the First Minister usually takes over for them.

Currently, the first minister is the Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab.

So while Number 10 say Johnson is still "leading" from inside his quarantine - if there's anything the PM can't physically do, Raab would take over.

Coronavirus: Inside NHS Nightingale - Built in 10 Days, With 4,000 Beds and 16,000 Staff

The ExCeL has been turned into what's believed to be the largest critical care facility in the world, with the Army working 15-hour shifts alongside plumbers, electricians and carpenters to get it ready to treat coronavirus Covid-19 patients

Daily Mirror UK, 2 APR 2020

This was meant to be Colonel Ashleigh Boreham's last week in the Army, but everything changed when he got a call asking him to plan a temporary hospital to look after people suffering from Covid-19.

Alongside his team, he joined NHS bosses to draw up plans over a cup of tea, and less than two weeks after work began NHS Nightingale is almost ready to open it's doors.

Based in the ExCel in east London, the hospital will have 4,000 beds, most of which will go to younger sufferers - making it the largest critical care facility in the world.

It's thought that a team of 16,000 staff, including doctors, nurses and cleaners, will work at the hospital, which is being looked after by the Barts Health NHS Trust, when it reaches full capacity.

Among them will be easyJet and Virgin Atlantic staff who are out of work since planes were grounded, who will work alongside medical staff to help care for people.

There will also be an army of up to 500 volunteers from St John Ambulance, with chief operating officer Richard Lee saying their team "needed little encouragement to step up".

A team of about 200 soldiers have joined electricians, plumbers and carpenters to get the first phase of the hospital ready for patients, with many working 15-hour days.

Each station has the same set up (Image: PA)

The 88,000 square-metre centre is now unrecognisable from the event space - normally used for business conferences or trade fairs - it was just two weeks ago.

Hundreds of beds are now lined up in separate cubicles, each with a ventilator and oxygen which will hopefully save somebody's life.

Every station also has it's own power sources, monitors and medical waste bins.

There are shelves of equipment labelled with sticky notes, including dressings, hand sanitiser and eye wash kits.
Initially it will care for 48 patients, with the first expected to arrive any time now.

Once it's officially open, the expansion will be "ramped meet its full 4,000-bed capacity in two weeks' time if needed, Nightingale's chief medical director Alan McGlennan has said.

A statement from Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said military planners and engineers had been working "hand in hand" with the NHS (Image: PA)

Colonel Boreham has said it's by far the biggest job he's ever done.
He said: "We are building a hospital for people in our nation. You are saving people's lives and they could be the lives of your families. It's the biggest job I've ever done.

"My grandfather was at the Somme, this is no different. I'm just at a different battle.

Everything is labelled (Image: PA)

"We are doing this to save the lives of Londoners. These are our comrades, there's no difference. It doesn't matter if they are civilian or military."

He later told BBC Breakfast: "This is my last week in the Army, well, it was until I got the phonecall.

"I've been hospitals, planned hospitals around the world. I've been a commander in Afghanistan. I've got hospitals in Oman, in Iraq and in the Balkans, so this is what I prepare for, it's what I do.

The space is unrecognisable from just a few weeks ago (Image: UK Ministry of Defence 2020)

"It's why I've come together with the NHS to work with them to deliver this facility at scale, at pace."

Chief operating officer Natalie Forrest said a "scary" number of staff would be needed to run the facility at full capacity and appealed for volunteers to come forward.

"If we have to use this facility, which I really hope we don't because everyone is staying home and washing their hands and social distancing, we will need thousands of doctors and nurses and volunteers to run this facility," she said.

The NHS and Army worked together on the huge project (Image: PA)

Asked to clarify how many are required, Ms Forrest said: "The numbers are scary, but if I tell you that to run one ward, including all of our ancillary staff, we need 200 members of staff."

When the hospital was announced, the NHS's chief executive Simon Stevens said: "Under these exceptionally challenging circumstances the NHS is taking extraordinary steps to fight coronavirus.

"That’s why NHS clinicians and managers are working with military planners and engineers to create, equip, staff and open the NHS Nightingale London, and we’re very grateful for their support.

The Queen’s Gurkha Engineer Regiment (Image: UK MOD/Crown copyright)

“This will be a model of care never needed or seen before in this country, but our specialist doctors are in touch with their counterparts internationally who are also opening facilities like this, in response to the shared global pandemic.

“Despite these amazing measures, the fact is no health service in the world will cope if coronavirus lets rip, which is why NHS staff are pleading with the public to follow medical advice – stay at home, stop the virus spreading, and save lives.”

Angry re: Lazy Boris On Holiday AGAIN as Brits Suffer From DEBT & COVID

‘A Clap in The Face’: Thousands of NHS Nurses and Healthcare Staff March Through UK Streets in Protest at Being Excluded in Pay Rise for Public Sector Employees Who Worked During Pandemic

Masked demonstrators take to the streets of London and urge the Government to give them a pay rise

Nurses were excluded from July public sector pay rise announcement because of prior deal made in 2018, even though they saved Boris life when he had COVID

Government awarded pay rises for workers including teachers and doctors who worked through lockdown

Daily Mail UK, 6 AUG 2020.

Thousands of NHS workers are taking to the streets of the UK to protest against their exclusion from a recent public sector pay rise announcement.

Anger is mounting as NHS workers were overlooked in the latest round of public sector pay rises – despite more than 500 NHS and social care staff dying from Covid-19.

Unite, which has a 100,000 members in the health service, is supporting its members wishing to attend the socially-distanced protests, so that the government can see the depth of discontent and frustration of NHS staff, they say, who continue to be in the frontline in the battle against Covid-19.

A flagship march is taking place in London, which began at St James's Park before protesters made their way along Whitehall towards Downing Street. The march is expected to finish in Parliament Square.

A blue banner reading 'End NHS pay inequality, together we win' led the march.

Many were carrying placards, including one which said:

'Boris remember my neighbour Lewis, what about his pay rise?
'He saved your life now reward us.'

Last month Chancellor announced a 3.1% pay rise for 900,000 public sector workers, including senior doctors, teachers and police officers.

Nurses were not included because they negotiated a separate three-year-deal in 2018. Junior doctors were also excluded because they agreed a new four year deal last year.

NHS workers have said the exclusion from the most recent public sector pay rises flies in the face of the Clap for Carers gesture which saw thousands of Britons head to their doorsteps and show appreciation for NHS workers with applause

NHS nurse who worked on the coronavirus frontline is forced to sell her house and move in with her mother after landing in debt...

An NHS nurse who contracted coronavirus while fighting the pandemic was forced to sell her house and move in with her mother after landing in debt over pay problems.

Vikki Gardiner - a community staff nurse and single mother to a six-year-old son - worked 30-hour weeks and took on extra shifts just to make ends meet.

The 33-year-old has even been forced to miss meals in a desperate bid to save up her funds.

She was admitted to hospital in April with Covid-19 after she was left unable to breathe properly.

Ms Gardiner: 'If I didn't love my job so much I would have signed up to stack shelves long ago.

“I had to sell my three-bed house in February because even while working 30 hours a week and taking extra shifts to make ends meet, I was getting more in debt and couldn’t do it anymore.

She added: 'Now I live with my mum and am buying a much smaller property, but even with that I’m so anxious because I don’t know if I’ll have to go back to robbing Peter to pay Paul.'

Ms Gardiner will join the march in Cambridge.

Angry re: Boris Accused of Misleading Rape Victims Re Missing £1bn

'Exhausted' NHS Heroes Vent Fury at Absolutely Disgusting' £3.50-a-Week Pay Rise

NHS workers have blasted the Government's 1% pay rise offer and told the Mirror of their struggles during the Covid pandemic as they take on side jobs or are isolated from family

Boris Johnson blows £12,500 on gourmet food as he lectures nurses on 'affordability'

Number 10 defended the Government's measly 1% pay rise proposal as all that is "affordable" - while the PM enjoyed luxury organic food store 'smuggled in' to Downing Street from a store owned by a major Tory donor

Daily Mirror UK, 5 MAR 2021.

'We have sacrificed so much during the pandemic'

Matt, 30, has taken on a part-time job as an Amazon driver

Exhausted and demoralised NHS workers are being forced to take on side jobs as delivery drivers or turn to food banks as they struggle to get by on their current pay.

Frontline workers have slammed the Government's proposed pitiful 1% pay rise as "absolutely disgusting" and "insulting", saying they would take home an extra £3.50 or less per week.

For some that barely covers the cost of getting to and from work in a single day.

NHS workers have told the Mirror they are prepared to go on strike as this offer is the latest slap in the face after a decade of austerity that saw them fall behind and a coronavirus pandemic in which they continue to risk their lives.

One mental health nurse has been forced to take a part-time Amazon gig, delivering parcels when he should be recuperating or spending time with family

An NHS colleague, referring to the 850-plus healthcare workers who have died during the pandemic, said: "The Government clearly didn’t value our lives and they don’t value us alive, either."

They have shared their harrowing pandemic stories, from seeing patients die on overwhelmed wards to helping the rising number of traumatised NHS staff who are turning to the service for help with their mental health or long Covid symptoms.

They work unpaid overtime to complete tasks or help out when it is busy and don't take breaks because staff shortages mean there isn't enough cover.

They fear the 1% offer will just drive more to quit.

As unions warn of strikes as a last resort, the Royal College of Nursing announced it will set up a £35 million fund to support industrial action.

Health minister Nadine Dorries gave a series of media interviews defending the Government's position, saying nurses have received a 12% increase in pay over the last three years and the average nurse's salary is around £34,000.

However, frontline workers have branded these claims "lies".

They hit out at the "hypocrisy" of Boris Johnson, whose life was saved by the NHS when he battled Covid-19 last year, his Government, saying their earlier support, which included clapping on doorsteps, now seems fake.

Unions say NHS workers deeserve a pay rise as high as 15 per cent after being ignored.

Movies NHS Heroes Worse Off After BORISs' Paltry Pay Rise

NHS Heroes Have Been Left £3,000 Worse Off Under The Tories Even With 3% Pay Rise

Health Secretary Sajid Javid announced the pay rise of 3% but rise was met with anger from pandemic heroes who demanded a decent real-terms pay increase after a decade of below inflation deals

Daily Mirror UK, 25 JUL 2021.

NHS staff have had a £3,000 real-terms pay cut since the Tories came to power.

Analysis by the TUC reveals the full extent of the inflation-adjusted hit since 2010, amid a growing backlash over last week’s 3% pay award.

Even with a 3% rise, nurses on £31,533 have suffered a £2,469 cut in their spending power.

Paramedics are £3,194 worse off. Workers are being consulted by health unions over possible industrial action and TUC chief Frances O’Grady said: “After the hardest year of their working lives, they deserve better.

“The Prime Minster must follow through on his promise to ‘build back fairer’. It’s not only about valuing them properly – it’s the fuel in the tank our economy needs.”

The Government says a typical nurse will get an extra £1,000 a year. Inflation is currently at 2.5% and expected to hit up to 4%.

After the pay rise announcement on Wednesday, nurse Jodie Elliot, 31, who works on a paediatric ward in a London hospital, told the Mirror: “That’s not enough as far as we’re concerned.

“In real terms the Government could be giving me another pay cut. I’ve been doing this for around ten years and I’ve literally never known a decent pay packet.

“The NHS has been doing its damndest to keep things going and we are now working at over 100% capacity.”

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: “NHS staff are rightly receiving a pay rise this year despite the wider public sector pay pause, in recognition of their extraordinary efforts.

“We asked the independent pay review bodies for their recommendations and I’m pleased to accept them in full, with a 3% pay rise for all staff in scope, from doctors and nurses to paramedics and porters.

“We will back the NHS as we focus our efforts on getting through this pandemic and tackling the backlog of other health problems that has built up.

“I will continue to do everything I can to support all those in our health service who are working so tirelessly to care for patients.”

The pay deal will be backdated to April 2021.

European Union UK NHS Gets £6bn Boost to Reduce Backlog

UK NHS Gets £6bn Budget Boost to Reduce Backlog

Autumn Budget 2021: NHS to get £6bn boost to tackle record backlog after Covid

Funding will pay for millions of tests, scans and operations by 2024/25 as 5.7m patients await treatment

The Telegraph 25 OCT 2021.

The NHS is to get a £6 billion Budget boost for operations and screening in a bid to reduce record backlogs, Rishi Sunak will announce this week.

The Chancellor will set out the extra capital funding on Wednesday to provide nine million more tests, scans and operations by 2024/25 for patients requiring treatment for hip and knee replacements, cataracts, hernias and other non-emergency conditions.

It comes amid warnings from doctors that backlogs of 5.7 million patients waiting for non-emergency treatments are “dangerously close” to crippling the NHS.

The money will increase the amount of elective surgery and checks by nearly a third on pre-pandemic levels, and more than double the number of “one-stop shop” diagnostic centres.

It will also create dozens of new surgical hubs with operating theatres in hospitals and improve digital technology to free up staff to treat patients, rather than being tied up with paperwork.

It comes as Mr Sunak suggested that the Budget will see an end to the public sector pay freeze, meaning potential salary increases for 2.6 million workers including teachers, police and civil servants.

The Chancellor said on Sunday that he would set out a “new pay policy” in the Budget after imposing a freeze last November, with only NHS staff and public servants earning less than £24,000 being exempt.

‘We are committed to getting health services back on track’

He said "strong investment in public services" would be at the heart of his plans for rebuilding the economy when he sets out his Budget.

The extra £5.9 billion for the NHS comes on top of £9 billion announced in September. It is feared that without additional funding to clear the backlog, the money raised through a 1.25 per cent hike in National Insurance will never reach its intended target of social care.

Mr Sunak said: “We are committed to getting health services back on track and ensuring no one is left waiting for vital tests or treatment.

“This is a game-changing investment in the NHS to make sure we have the right buildings, equipment and systems to get patients the help they need and make sure the NHS is fit for the future.”

Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, said: “This £6 billion investment will support the delivery of millions more checks, scans and procedures for patients across the country.

“Business as usual won’t be enough. That’s why we are going to reform care with more community diagnostic centres, new surgical hubs and the latest technology to help recover NHS services by tackling waiting lists.”

Waiting Lists Rise at Rate of 100,000 per Month

The waiting list for non-emergency treatment has been rising at a rate of 100,000 per month, up from under four million at the start of the pandemic to more than 5.7 million today.

The number waiting more than 12 months nearly trebled to 292,138 in August, up from 111,026 at the same point last year. That prompted warnings from the British Medical Association that the “immense backlog of care is dangerously close to crippling our health service”.

Some £2.3 billion of the new funding is to help establish at least 100 community diagnostic centres across England, including 44 which have already been announced. These centres are expected to help clear most existing test backlogs caused by the pandemic, including for CT, MRI and ultrasound scans, by the end of the parliament.

The Treasury said the additional capacity would also ensure the resilience of the country's diagnostic services in the years to come.

Some £1.5 billion of the £5.9 billion will pay for increased bed capacity, equipment and new surgical hubs to tackle waiting times for elective surgery. Each hub will be equipped with four or five surgical theatres.

£2.1 billion will be invested in technology and data in a bid to improve efficiency and security within the NHS. The new and improved IT will give NHS staff access to the fastest broadband, while digital patient records will ensure patients get the best care wherever they are.

Movies Re: NHS on its Knees -Worst Staffing Crisis in History

NHS on its Knees - Worst NHS Staffing Crisis in its History Putting Patients at Serious Risk, MPs Warn

'Chronic workforce shortages' are heaping pressure on overstretched staff

The Guardian UK 25 JUL 2022

The NHS is facing “the greatest workforce crisis” in its history which is putting patients at serious risk of harm, an influential group of MPs warns today.

In its report, the cross-party Commons health and social care select committee slams the “absence of a credible government strategy” on NHS-wide understaffing and criticises ministers for delaying a blueprint it says is urgently needed to address critical gaps in almost every area of care.

The hard-hitting report includes evidence showing that the staffing crisis in the NHS in England is even worse than official figures suggest. NHS Digital figures suggest that the service has vacancies for 38,972 nurses and 8,016 doctors. However, the real figures could be as high as 50,000 and 12,000 respectively, according to estimates the Nuffield Trust prepared for the MPs.

The trust’s analysis accords with the view of many frontline doctors and managers that some posts are not advertised, and thus not picked up by the statistical agency, because hospitals cannot afford to fill them, even if suitable doctors or nurses are identified.

“We now face the greatest workforce crisis in history in the NHS and in social care, with still no idea of the number of additional doctors, nurses and other professionals we actually need,” said Jeremy Hunt, the former health secretary – and failed Tory leadership contender – who chairs the committee.

Overworked, often-exhausted NHS personnel still recovering from the Covid pandemic “know there is no silver bullet to solve this problem but we should at least be giving them comfort that a plan is in place. This must be a top priority for the new prime minister.”

The NHS is emerging as a key issue in the contest between the former chancellor Rishi Sunak and the foreign secretary, Liz Truss, to become Britain’s next prime minister.

At the weekend Sunak highlighted the 6.6 million-patient backlog of NHS care, long delays patients face getting care and growing numbers of people forced to pay for private treatment “with a gun to their heads”. He said the state of the health service now constituted a national emergency and that its increasing inability to provide prompt, high-quality care is so serious that the service could “break”.

Truss has pledged to scrap the 1.25% rise in national insurance – the “health and social care levy” – that began in April and is expected to yield £12bn a year, mainly for the NHS. Her pledge has raised questions about how the government would fund the service properly.

The committee’s findings will prove uncomfortable for both candidates, especially its warning that the chronic lack of staff is a threat to both patients and health professionals.

“The persistent understaffing of the NHS now poses a serious risk to staff and patient safety, both for routine and emergency care. It also costs more as patients present later with more serious illness,” the report says.

“While shortages in any area pose patient safety risks, these are particularly pressing in maternity services,” the MPs add. They point out that the government last year accepted their recommendation that the NHS in England needs 2,000 more midwives and 500 more obstetricians in order to provide care that experts consider safe, given the risks involved in childbirth.

“However, despite this, the NHS in England lost 552 midwives between March 2021 and March 2022. We asked the secretary of state for a deadline by when the shortfall would be addressed but as yet no date has been set.” Pregnant women need that recruitment to occur so they can “have confidence their maternity services are heading towards safety”.

The MPs praise the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) for making progress towards delivering the 50,000 extra nurses by 2024 that Boris Johnson pledged in 2019. However, they also highlight the former health secretary Sajid Javid’s admission that another key NHS promise – to increase the number of GPs by 6,000 by the same date – will not be met.

They criticise the government’s “refusal to do proper workforce planning” and “marked reluctance to act decisively” despite the seriousness of the situation. Javid vowed last year to produce an outline of an NHS staffing plan by this spring but it did not appear and is now scheduled to emerge later this year. It is also unclear if it will include plans to hire specific numbers of extra staff.

Sam Higginson, the chief executive of the Norfolk and Norwich university hospitals NHS trust, said in a recent interview that it was operating with an 11% vacancy rate.

Amid a raft of recommendations for action, the MPs urge the Treasury to overhaul the rules regarding doctors’ pensions, problems with which are leading to experienced medics working less than they otherwise would – or even quitting. “It is a national scandal that senior doctors are being forced to reduce their working contribution to the NHS or leave it entirely because of NHS pension arrangements,” they say.

Responding to the committee’s findings, a DHSC spokesperson said: “We hugely value and appreciate the dedication and contribution of NHS and social care staff. We are growing the health and social care workforce, with over 4,000 more doctors, and 9,600 more nurses compared to last year, and over 1,400 more doctors in general practice compared to March 2019.

“As we continue to deliver on our commitment to recruit 50,000 more nurses by 2024, we are also running a £95m recruitment drive for maternity services and providing £500m to develop our valued social care workforce, including through training opportunities and new career pathways.

“We have commissioned NHS England to develop a long-term workforce plan to recruit and support NHS staff while they deliver high-quality, safe care to patients and help to bust the Covid backlogs.”
