Mysterious Disappearance of Great White Sharks Found With Livers Ripped Out

WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES

South Africa's False Bay was once the great white shark capital of the world but now the deadly predators are myseriously disappearing from the ocean

Daily Mirror UK, 20 AUG 2020.

They're among the most fearsome beasts on the planet - but the numbers of great white sharks are dwindling at an alarming rate.

The deadly predators have long made South Africa's False Bay their home with tourists flocking to watch them 'leap' out of the sea as they hunt down seals.

But in recent years numbers of the great whites in this stretch of water have been in sharp decline - and even more disturbing is the way some of them died.

Three years ago five of the beasts of the deep were found washed up with huge wounds gauged out of their sides. Chillingly, they were all missing their livers.

There are suspicions that two killer whales, Port and Starboard, who have been spotted in the same part of the ocean have been hunting down the sharks so they can rip out their fatty livers.

Experts claim the predator whales have acquired a taste for the sharks' livers, which are rich in oil and fats, providing a valuable source of energy for the huge marine mammals.

Marian Nieuwoudt, a Cape Town environment official, said: "To our knowledge the absence of great white sharks from False Bay has not been recorded or reported before.

"Great white sharks are top apex predators and we do not know how their absence from False Bay would impact the ecosystem.

"Neither do we know the causes for their disappearance. We remain hopeful that the great whites will return to False Bay and will announce our first sighting when this happens."

For the last 11 years there have been more and more sightings of orcas in False Bay

And the great whites aren't the only sharks who have been disappearing from the waters around False Bay.

Tamlyn Engelbrecht, research manager at the shark safety program Shark Spotters, told Forbes: "Already we've seen changes in other shark species, such as the bronze whalers and sevengills who have become more prevalent at Seal Island.

"If it becomes a more long-term knock-on effect, it's unpredictable what will happen."

The mysterious vanishing is having a devastating impact not only on the sharks but also on the industry that has built up around them.

False Bay is known globally as the great white shark capital of the world and has become a massive tourist attractions.

Brave visitors pay to dive in cages so they can get up close to the predators but because of their dwindling numbers, this is now at risk.

False Bay is one of just three places in South Africa where this activity is permitted.

And while killer whales Port and Starboard could be responsible for some of the deaths and disappearances of the great whites, local cage dive operator and wildlife photographer Chris Fallows, doesn't believe this is the whole story.

He, along with South African shark scientist Enrico Gennari, believe fishing methods could be to blame for the vanishing sharks.

Not only that but they believe it's not a problem confined to just South Africa and could also be having an impact on the populations in Australia.

The South African Demersal Shark Longline is said to target smaller sharks, which are then sold on to Australia where they become fish and chips.

While the great whites aren't believed to also being caught, it is removing an important food source for the predators.

The two men have now created Shark Free Chips, which aims to promote sustainable fishing in both South Africa and Australia.
