Oh Crap! SeaWorlds' CRUELTY: Horror Death of Whale Left Spouting Blood From Blowhole

3 ex-SeaWorld Trainers Going Public on Orca Treatment, Cruelty & Death of Trainers

The trainers were revealed as John Hargrove, Greg Stryker and Sharon Vietz.

The spokesman said producers of the show reached out to SeaWorld, and got a written response. But he didn’t have it to share with Times of San Diego.

SeaWorld didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on the upcoming show.

Now in its second season, “Whistleblower” shows Stryker saying:

“If SeaWorld had a motto for its trainers, it would be: Show up, suit up, shut up.”

The preview clip frames the issue as “David vs. Goliath” where Hargrove “put everything on the line” — even hiring a bodyguard at one point because “you’ve cost this company billions.”

Whistleblower - Season 2, Episode 3 SeaWorld: The Case Against Captivity

First Aired: 7 June, 2019

John Hargrove, a former SeaWorld senior killer whale trainer, was entranced with whales ever since he first visited the theme park as a child. But after years of working at SeaWorld, he grew to believe that the forced captivity of the whales resulted in a host of physical and behavioral issues, including aggressive and dangerous actions, and he decided to speak out and quit the job he once loved.

Earth SeaWorld Killer Whales Gruesome Souvenirs-Ripping Flesh Off Rivals'

SeaWorld Killer Whales Left Gruesome Souvenirs" in Pools After Ripping Flesh Off Rivals'

WARNING: UPSETTING CONTENT.

The mysterious death of six-year-old orca Amaya at the company's San Diego park has shone the spotlight once again on animal welfare concerns

Daily Mirror, 27 AUG 2021.

Scalping the skin off trainers' heads and throwing their lifeless bodies around like toys - SeaWorld's killer whales have been behind some truly horrific, infamous deaths.

Yet over the years, the park has also faced allegations of keeping the orcas themselves in cramped, inhumane conditions, leading to acute stress, illness and premature death.

Over the weekend, the company's San Deigo park confirmed six-year-old Amaya, a female killer whale, has died a "sudden and unexpected" death.

It said the orca showed signs of illness last Wednesday but that staff were caught off-guard when she died the following day.

According to the non-profit Whale and Dolphin Conservation USA, at least 43 orcas have died across SeaWorld's three parks in the United States.

And previously, former trainers have made grim claims about the life the beautiful creatures face in captivity, with skin ripped off through in-fighting, jaws popped out through stress and even mothers turning on newborn calves.

Ripped whale skin 'taken home as souvenirs'

SeaWorld has faced criticism over the treatment of its whales and other animals since the release of the 2013 documentary Blackfish which sparked international anger and pressured the park to put an end to its breeding program.

The film discussed the struggles of Tilikum, a male orca that died in 2017 at age 36.

In 2010, trainer Dawn Brancheau was infamously killed by Tilikum during the 'Dine with Shamu' show. She died from blunt force trauma and drowning.

Following Dawn's death and the release of the documentary, former park trainers have spoken about the alleged suffering of SeaWorld orcas, which the park has denied as "categorically false".

Sarah Fischbeck, who worked at the San Diego park for six years from 2007, previously claimed the park "wouldn't sell another ticket" if visitors knew what went on behind the scenes.

Orcas were so stressed by being kept in cramped conditions that they turned to in-fighting and even left strips of each other's flesh at the bottom of pools, she said.

"You'd be diving at the bottom of the tanks and you'd find these long strips of what looked like black rubber. And it was skin they'd peeled off each other," Fischbeck told The Dodo.

"We had divers take whale skin home to their families all the time as souvenirs."

Fischbeck also claimed that a beluga named Ruby was bred continuously through artificial insemination, to the point where she even mauled her own babies to death.

When Ruby had her first calf in 2008, The Dodo claims the public story was that the baby was sickly and rejected by its mother.

However, Fischbeck claims Ruby "actually killed it", adding: "She attacked it and she killed it and they separated it from her and resuscitated it and it lived in the back pool for a month and it died."

The ex-trainer said that when Ruby fell pregnant again in 2012, she fell ill after miscarrying and was hidden from view in a back pool.

Fischbeck claimed "she was on the surface floating" and her "skin was turning yellow" before eventually passing away in 2014.

In a statement to the website, SeaWorld called Fischbeck's allegations "a complete distortion of the facts".

Orcas had 'popped jaws and were fed Valium'

Six years after Dawn's death, SeaWorld announced it would end its programme of breeding the orcas in captivity.

However, animal rights campaigners have long called for a ban on the animal shows altogether, with former staff members claiming the creatures have been starved, drugged and put under so much stress that they self-harm.

"They also got chronic infections, so they got antibiotics. They were also sometimes aggressive or hard to control, so they could be given Valium to calm their aggression.

“All whales were getting vitamins packed in their fish. Several got daily antibiotics, including Tilikum, for chronic teeth infections.”

Addressing the claims, a SeaWorld spokesperson told the newspaper: “These are many of the same tired, false and misleading claims uninformed activists and disgruntled former employees have been repeating for years.

“Our animal welfare practices are accredited and reviewed by organizations such as American Humane, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums and U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, so any notion that SeaWorld abuses animals is categorically false."

Former trainer John Hargrove has also accused the park of a “cult-like” attitude over covering up any welfare concerns.

“The way that it works is you keep your mouth shut. If you don’t, there’s a price to pay,” he told the Guardian, adding that trainers could be punished by being moved out of the stadium or even blacklisted.

Since SeaWorld - which has four parks across San Diego, Orlando, San Antonio and Abu Dhabi - first opened in 1964, at least 49 orcas have died at its US sites, according to the UK charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation.

In the wild, the average life-span of a male orca is 30 years, while a female usually lives to at least 50. In theme parks, however, most of the whales die in their teens and twenties.

Mysterious injuries and deaths spark concern

Over the years, animal rights campaigners have also demanded answers over a series of gruesome-looking injuries to orcas.

Over the years, animal rights campaigners have also demanded answers over a series of gruesome-looking injuries to orcas.

In 2012, Nakai, an 11-year-old captive killer whale, was left with a massive chunk of flesh missing from just underneath his mouth after a performance with two other whales in the California park.

SeaWorld insisted the wound was caused by Nakai coming "into contact with a portion of the pool", but on the night of the incident the three whales reportedly broke from a routine and started "fighting".

In 2017, the last orca to be born in captivity at SeaWorld passed away at just three months old.

The calf, named Kyara, succumbed to "some very serious and progressive health issues" at SeaWorld's park in San Antonio, the company said, suggesting it could be linked to pneuemonia.

"Kyara had a tremendous impact on each of her care staff, not to mention all of the guests that had the chance to see her," trainer Julie Sigman said in a statement.

"From late nights to early morning, rain or shine, we dedicate our lives to these animals, and this loss will be felt throughout the entire SeaWorld family."

A year later, officials at the Orlando park were forced to issue a statement after its orca, Katina, was pictured with a gruesome looking tear to her dorsal fin.

“It’s horrific,” Heather Murphy, who took photos of the injured animal, told The Dodo. “I can’t imagine the pain she must have been through.”

In its statement, SeaWorld admitted the injury had come as a result of interactions with other orcas, but insisted aggresive behaviour was "natural".

"On Saturday, March 17, the matriarch of the SeaWorld Orlando orca pod, Katina, sustained an injury at the base of her dorsal fin as the result of interactions with other members of the orca pod," the post read.

The death of Amaya, the youngest orca at the San Diego park, last week will once again raise concerns about the welfare of orcas in captivity.

Both of her parents, Kaila and Ulises, are still alive, according to SeaWorld, and a post-mortem is due to be completed in the coming weeks.

A park spokesperson said that specialists and veterinarians treated Amaya immediately but "despite her care team’s efforts, Amaya’s condition continued to deteriorate. Her death was sudden and unexpected."

Petey, one of her animal care specialists, said: "Amaya was a playful, fun-loving orca that always put smiles on people’s faces.

“She will be missed by our team and the guests that she inspired. Thank you so much for the outpouring of love and support.”

Horror Death of SeaWorld Killer Whale Kandu Left Spouting Blood From Blowhole

Kandu was fatally injured during a show at SeaWorld, and refused to leave her 11-month-old baby's side as she died of a haemorrhage

Daily Mirror 27 APR 2022

Kandu rammed into a bigger orca during a show, severing a major artery in her nasal passages and fracturing her jaw...

Killer whale Kandu V died at SeaWorld after a fight with another orca left her spouting blood from her blowhole in front of a horrified audience.

It was the second killer whale death at the park in the space of just a year as male whale Orky had died three days after Kandu gave birth to her baby.

Kandu, who was 14 when she died, rammed into a bigger orca during a show, severing a major artery in her nasal passages and fracturing her jaw.

Killer whales that are being held in captivity have been known to become aggressive. Keeping orcas in captivity like Kandu remains a controversial topic, although SeaWorld insists its animals get top care and its study of them helps to protect animals who live in the wild.

Keeping orcas in captivity like Kandu remains a controversial topic

SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida, banned humans being in shows alongside the orcas in 2010 while they try to improve conditions for the incredibly intelligent ocean creatures.

It was August 1989 when Kandu was in one of SeaWorld's so-called Shamu Shows with another female orca,

The Ocean Preservation Society and The Orca Project also published a grim photo which seems to show blood spurting from the whale's blowhole.

A SeaWorld spokesperson previously said that there's been no more incidents since they made the changes in 2010 preventing people from performing with the orcas.

"Our hundreds of veterinarians and care specialists provide world-class medical care," the spokesperson continued.

"None of the killer whales in our care live a solitary life and they participate in positive reinforcement sessions daily, engaging in a range of different activities to ensure they receive plenty of physical and mental exercise.

"Additionally, the study of orcas in our care by our scientists and third-party organisations has directly informed the world’s knowledge of and ability to protect whales in the wild."

Kandu was reportedly involved in five other incidents in the years before she died, including snapping a trainer's neck and trying to drown another.

She had always been the most dominant female at SeaWorld, and was highly protective of her calf, 11-month-old Orkid.

Dr McBain shared how the trainers didn't even realise Kandu was injured at first ....
