How We Become Stronger

Whenever opposition arises, God’s grace thrives in us. Think about what happens to a tree when a great storm beats violently against it. The wind threatens to uproot the tree and carry it away. It breaks off branches and blows away its leaves. It loosens its roots and blows off its buds. When the storm is over, things look hopeless.
Yet, look closer; the same storm that opened crevices in the earth around the trunk of the tree has helped the roots go deeper. The tree has access to new, deeper sources of nutrition and water. It has been purged of all its dead branches. The buds may be gone, but others will grow back more fully. That tree is now stronger, growing in unseen ways. Just wait till harvest because it’s going to bear much fruit.
Maybe you’re in a storm right now. The wind is blowing hard, shaking you violently, and you think you’re going down. Beloved, don’t panic! You’ve got to know that in the midst of the tempest, you are putting down deep spiritual roots. God is developing in you a deepening humility, a greater mourning and sorrow for sin, a heightened hunger for his righteousness.
Paul says, “Not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance” (Romans 5:3, NKJV).
In 2 Corinthians 4:16-17, we read, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” The word ‘working’ in this verse is the same as ‘produces’ in Romans 5:3.
God is making you a seasoned soldier of the cross, battle-scarred but battle-smart and courageous. You may get down on yourself at times, but the Lord never does. The fact is that he could have acted sovereignly at any time to pluck you out of your struggle, but he didn’t because he is using to produce strength and new life in us.

True Communion with God

Many Christians talk about intimacy with the Lord, walking with him, knowing him, having fellowship with him; but we can’t have true communion with God unless we receive into our hearts the full revelation of his love, grace and mercy. Communion with God consists of two things:
1. Receiving the love of the Father
2. Loving him in return

You can spend hours each day in prayer, telling the Lord how much you love him, but that isn’t communion. If you haven’t received his love, you haven’t had communion with him. You simply can’t share intimacy with the Lord unless you’re secure in his love for you.
I know when I come to my Lord, I’m not coming to a hard, fierce, demanding Father. He doesn’t wait for me with an angry countenance. He doesn’t trail me, waiting for me to fail so he can say, “I caught you!”
No, I’m coming to a Father who has revealed himself to me as pure, unconditional love. He’s kind and tenderhearted, full of grace and mercy, anxious to lift all my cares and burdens. I know he’ll never turn me down when I call on him.
The prophet Zephaniah says something incredible about God’s love for us. He writes, “The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17, NKJV).
God rests in his love for his people. In Hebrew, the phrase “He will rest in his love” reads, “He shall be silent because of His love.” God is saying, in essence, “I’ve found my true love, and I’m satisfied. I don’t need to look elsewhere because I have no complaint, and I won’t take my love back. My love is a settled matter!”
He cares about everything concerning me (see Psalm 100). Can you receive his word that he loved you before the world was created, before humankind existed, before you were born? Can you accept that he loved you even after you fell into Adam’s sinful ways and became an enemy to him? That’s why I come into his courts with praise and thanksgiving because I’m thankful for who my God is.

Loving Jesus in Return

Let me give you one of the most powerful verses in all of scripture. Proverbs give us these prophetic words of Christ: “Then I was beside him as a master craftsman; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him, rejoicing in his inhabited world, and my delight was with the sons of men” (Proverbs 8:30-31, NKJV).
Beloved, we are the sons being mentioned here. From the very foundations of the earth, God foresaw a body of believers joined to his Son. Even then the Father delighted and rejoiced in these sons. Jesus testifies, “I was my Father’s delight, the joy of his being, and now all who turn to me in faith are his delight as well!”
So how do we love Jesus in return? John answers, “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome” (1 John 5:2-3).
What are his commandments? The gospel says, “Then one of them, a lawyer, asked him [Christ] a question, testing him, and saying, ‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?’ Jesus said to him, ‘”You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.’” (Matthew 22:35-40).
The first and most important command is to love the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind. We’re to hold nothing back from him. The second is that we love our neighbor as ourselves. These two simple, non-grievous commands sum up all of God’s law.
Jesus is saying here that we cannot be in communion with God or walk in his glory if we bear a grudge against anyone. Therefore, loving God means loving every brother and sister in the same way we’ve been loved by the Father.

He Has Already Made Provision

When God calls us to any specific work, he has already made provision for everything we need to accomplish it. “God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8, NKJV).This verse is not just a hope; it is a promise! It begins with the words, “God is able!” God is not interested in just meeting your needs. He always wants to give you more than you need. That is what ‘abound’ means, an ever-increasing, super-abundant supply.
“Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (Ephesians 3:20). Think of what is being promised here. When you are down and tired and don’t think you can go any farther, God is able to so invigorate you that you will have all you need in every possible situation at all times.
It is as if the Lord is saying, “Listen, all you shepherds! Listen, all you who faithfully attend my house and labor in prayer, praise and intercession. I want to give you an abundance of strength, hope, joy, peace, rest, finances, encouragement and wisdom. In fact, I want you to have an overabundance of all you need.”
God never intended for us to be spiritual paupers, poor in the things of the Lord. On the contrary, the mature believer is the one who enjoys a revelation of all the great provisions God has prepared for him, and he goes after this revelation by faith.
Indeed, the Bible says we are to seek him for this revelation. Paul wrote, “Now we have received…the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual” (1 Corinthians 2:12–13).
I believe most Christians have not honestly faced the power of these promises of God. We’ve read them many times, but they remain as dead letters to us.
We must lay hold of them and say, “Lord, reveal to me what you have prepared! Open my mind and my spirit to your resources. Your Word says I must know all these things that are freely given to me so that I can claim them for your glory!”

Becoming Immune to Deception

Keith Holloway

A very important passage of the Bible that often confuses readers is “Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and his disciples came up to show him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said to them, ‘Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.’ Now as he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, ‘Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?’
“And Jesus answered and said to them: ‘Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, saying, “I am the Christ,” and will deceive many.’” (Matthew 24:1-5, NKJV).
The center of religion, the priesthood and the law was found in that temple, and the idea that it would be destroyed was deeply disturbing to the disciples. When they asked ‘What’ and ‘When’ and ‘How,’ Jesus’ response had nothing to do with the temple or the specifics of what was coming.
In our vernacular, Jesus said, “Look, first and foremost, you guys have to pay attention and prepare because such deception is going to come that many — many — who call on the name of Christ, many who are found in our religious centers, many who fill our churches will not listen nor be prepared, and they will be deceived.”
Most deception starts with things that are said in contradiction to the Word of God.
Many will come and say, “Follow me. I’m a pastor or prophet of God. I have the answers!” What they say will not line up with scripture, but many of us will not heed what Christ said.
When deception is dealt with elsewhere in the New Testament, it’s dealt with in the church and regarding doctrine. It doesn’t take much for us to picture modern times when people have said things that led a multitude astray. The real question is “Why?” The answer is that people were not listening to Christ.
How do we hear from God? Do we need to run to the mountains or attend a conference? My friends, God has already given us his Word. It’s the scriptures. We need to be men and women who don’t just read the Bible, but we ought to study and meditate on it. We don’t live on bread alone but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. AMEN

God Provides a Way of Escape

The Spirit of Christ is living in us, and the power of God is working through us even in our temptations. We know this because the Bible clearly states, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13, ESV).I love what Paul says here, that God will provide the way of escape.
We live in a culture today that doesn’t want to believe that Christ is the only way of escape. Oprah has her way of escaping, and Dr. Phil can show you another way of escaping, and a certain clinic can show you their way of escaping; but the Bible doesn’t say Jesus is one of many ways of escaping. Christ clearly states, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
When God says that he will provide, is that reminiscent of any Old Testament passage you might have heard before? Do you remember the story of Abraham when he’s climbing the mountain to sacrifice Isaac? He had the faith to say, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son” (Genesis 22:8). God does indeed provide a sacrifice, “So Abraham called the name of that place, ‘The Lord will provide’; as it is said to this day, ‘On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.’” (Genesis 22:14). This was the same place where Solomon would build the temple of the Lord, where God provided a place for his people to meet with him.
The Israelites throughout the Old Testament would try to meet with God in other places, try to find other ways to escape their troubles, but it never worked for them.
When we finally say, “My sacrifice is not sufficient. My way is not the right one,” and follow God’s way, we will have his provision working in us. No man can be cleansed of sin without Jesus. No woman can live a righteous life without the imputed righteousness of Christ.
You can overcome any temptation in your life right now. You can overcome it because God has provided the way. Our Savior gives us the life we need to live the kind of righteousness that the law of God calls forth.

When We Limit God’s Power

Scripture says of Israel, “Yes, again and again they tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. They did not remember his power: The day when he redeemed them from the enemy” (Psalm 78:41-42, NKJV). Israel turned away from God in unbelief. Likewise, I believe we limit God today with our doubt and unbelief.
I limit God most in the area of healing. I have prayed for physical healing for many, and I have seen God perform miracle after miracle. When it comes to my own body, though, I limit God. I am afraid to let him be God to me. I douse myself with medicine or run to a doctor before I ever pray for myself. I’m not saying it’s wrong to go to the doctor, but sometimes I fit the description of those who “did not seek the Lord, but the physicians” (2 Chronicles 16:12).
Jesus says that God does not hear our prayers and praises simply because we utter them over and over for hours at a time. It is possible to pray, fast and do righteous things and still not reach the place where we hunger to know him and begin to understand his ways. This was demonstrated during Christ’s ministry with the very people he grew up around.
“When he had come to his own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, ‘Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary?...’ So they were offended at him.
“But Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.’ Now he did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief” (Matthew 13:54-58).
We do not learn his ways in the prayer closet alone, although everyone who truly knows the Lord is very intimate with him. You cannot know God’s ways without quality time in which we let God be God to us, laying every need and request in his hands and then walking forward in faith that he will answer.

Finding Joy in Our Testing

When the children of Israel were going through testing, were they really supposed to express gratitude and thanksgiving in the midst of it? When they were surrounded and in a hopeless situation, did God really expect them to have a joyful reaction?
Absolutely! That was the secret to getting out of their difficulty. You see, God wants something from all of us in our times of overwhelming troubles and testings. He wants us to offer him a sacrifice of thanksgiving in the midst of it all!
I believe James had discovered this secret when he admonished, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience” (James 1:2-3, NKJV). He was saying, “Don’t give up! Make an altar in your heart, and offer up joyous thanksgiving in the midst of your trials.”
Of course, the children of Israel did offer the Lord praise and thanksgiving, but they did it on the wrong side of the Red Sea. The people rejoiced all night, but God had no pleasure in it. Anybody can shout in gratitude after the victory comes. The question God was putting to Israel was “Will you praise me before I send help, while you’re still in the midst of the battle?”
I believe if Israel had rejoiced on the “trial side” of the Red Sea, they wouldn’t have had to be tested again at the waters of Marah. Had they passed the Red Sea test, the waters at Marah wouldn’t have tasted bitter but sweet. Israel would have seen water springing up everywhere in the desert, rather than having to go thirsty.
God help us to sing the right song on the testing side of trials. This brings the highest delight to our heavenly Father.
Are you going through a most difficult time right now? Then sing! Praise God! Say to the Lord, “You can do it. You delivered me before, you can deliver me now. I rest in joy.”

God’s Glory Revealed to Us

In Exodus 33, Moses didn’t know it, but God was about to bring him into a greater revelation of his glory and nature. This revelation would go far beyond friendship, far beyond intimacy. It’s a revelation God wants all his hurting people to know.
The Lord told Moses he was going to show him his glory. “’I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you...’ But he said, ‘You cannot see my face; for no man shall see me, and live…. So it shall be, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand while I pass by.’” (Exodus 33:19-22, NKJV).
The Hebrew word for glory in this passage means “my own self.” God was telling Moses, “I myself will pass by near you.” One translation says it this way: “I will hide you in a cavity of the rock, and I will defend you with the protectiveness of my power until I have passed by.”
What was the great revelation that God gave to Moses about himself? What is the truth about him that we’re to sanctify in our hearts? It is this: “And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty” (Exodus 34:6-7).
Here was the greater revelation, the full picture of who God is. The Lord told Moses, “Come up to this rock in the morning. I’ll give you a hope that will keep you. I’ll show you my heart as you’ve never seen it before.”
Christ is the full expression of that glory. Indeed, all that is in the Father is embodied in the Son, and Jesus was sent to earth to bring that glory to all of us.

The Lord Raises Up His People

One of God’s names in scripture is Jehovah-Nissi. It means the God who provides, who is a banner, who lifts ups, who exalts. It’s an interesting combination of meanings all together in one word.
This Hebrew word nissi was used in Jewish weddings. When the bride and groom were at the wedding party, all of the guests would make the couple sit in two chairs; then they would lift the chairs up and walk around the room, carrying the bride and groom. That action of lifting up was called nissi.
I think it’s a powerful picture because marriage is a kind of lifting up and great exaltation. I’ve been married 25 years, and it’s a wonderful blessing, but it’s also a test.
We don’t really want God to test us; we don’t want to go through dry seasons where we feel alone and away from his presence. We don’t want to go through the test of having to move to difficult places, the test of friends hurting our hearts, the test of family difficulties, the test of financial difficulties, the tests in church or ministry.
When Paul was talking about some of the tests in his life, he said, “Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles…danger from false brothers. And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches” (2 Corinthians 11:24-26,28, ESV).
Why is he saying this? What’s the point of this?
Paul provides the answer in very next chapter. “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10).
There’s a reason for God’s tests. He tests us in the area we love most. Every test you’re going through is not God’s desire to push you back or keep you in your place; it’s God’s desire to bring you nissi, to bring you to a new place, to elevate your faith and have you worship him as the Lord who lifts us up.

The Father’s Willing Embrace

Have you ever had a friend or loved one say to you, out of the blue: “Are you mad at me? Did I do something wrong?”
You may simply be quiet, deep in thought, so you answer, “No, I’m not mad. You didn’t do anything to hurt me. I’m just quiet right now.”
They press you, saying, “Was it something I said?”
“No, you didn’t say anything. Everything is all right.”
Finally, to convince that person, you have to hug them. “Look, I love you! I’m not upset. But if you keep this up, you’re going to get me upset!”
Beloved, this is often how we treat our heavenly Father. At the end of the day, we go to our secret closet and say, “Let’s see now, how did I grieve Jesus today? What did I do wrong? What did I forget to do? I’m such a mess that I don’t know how he can love me. Lord, forgive me one more time. Someday I’ll be so obedient that you’ll find it easy to love me.”
God is there all the time, waiting to embrace you. He wants to show you how much he loves you, and he wants you to lie back and rest in his love. When the prodigal son came home, he was welcomed back into his father’s house. He received a new robe, ate at his father’s table and had full forgiveness. The one thing this son knew was that he was secure in his father’s love. He knew his father would bear with him, work with him, love him. That’s how our heavenly Father is with us.
No matter how far we may stray from our Father, we continually have the ability to return. We must believe these words: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he made us accepted in the Beloved” (Ephesians 1:3-6, NKJV).
God waits with outstretched arms to embrace all who accept his love and return to his presence.

We Are God’s in Life or Death

Because God loves you, he will work to cleanse you, but it is a loving chastening upon those who repent and return to him. You may feel God’s arrows in your soul because of your past and present sins, but if you have a repentant heart and want to turn from error, you can call upon his chastening love. You will not feel his wrath as the heathens do but rather the rod of his discipline, applied by his loving hand.
When you know you have arrived at your lowest point, it is time to seek the Lord in brokenness, repentance and faith.
When you cry out to God, he pours his strength into you. “In the day when I cried out, you answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul…. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you will revive me; you will stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand will save me. The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; do not forsake the works of your hands” (Psalm 138:3, 7–8, NKJV).
One of the most difficult things for Christians to accept is the suffering of the righteous. There is an erroneous doctrine that says if you are in agreement with God, you will never suffer. It claims, “Just call out to God, and he will come running and solve everything immediately.” This is not the gospel! The heroes of faith listed in Hebrews 11 all had close relationships with God, and they suffered mocking, torture and violent deaths (see Hebrews 11:36–38). Paul himself, who walked closely with God, was shipwrecked, stoned, whipped, left for dead, robbed, jailed and persecuted. He suffered the loss of all things.
God wants to plant something in our hearts through our trials. He wants us to be able to say, “Lord Jesus, I believe you rule over the events of my life. If anything happens to me, it’s only because you allowed it, and I trust your purpose in doing it. Help me understand the lesson you want me to learn from it. If I walk in righteousness and have your joy in my heart, my living and dying will bring glory to you. I will say, ‘Jesus, whether I live or die, I am yours!’”

Walking as Servants in Life

I’ve been around people who want the gifts of healing and prophesy and miracles so they could be famous, so they could get invited places and get nice honorariums. It wasn’t about honoring God. It wasn’t about serving other people, their growth and edification.
This is why Paul says, “Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?... There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church” (1 Corinthians 14:6, 10-12, ESV).
You want spiritual gifts? Pursue and excel in those gifts that build up the church because Christ died for the church. Anyone who helps the church, God will help. Anyone who’s out to make a name for themselves…God is going to withdraw from that. He’s not sharing his glory with some other name. There is only one name that is above every other name!
What do we say if we’re so proud of our denomination and we’re carrying on in church, and a visitor comes in who’s smoking weed five days a week, takes one look and says, “I’m out of here”?
Is that what Christ would want?
“Oh no, but we’re having church! We’re worshiping in the heavenlies.” Well, come down to earth for a little while and talk to that guy smoking weed. He needs Jesus. Whatever you do — hymns, speaking in tongues, worship, sharing the gospel, prayers, odd words and phrases — pray that God will edify people because outside of church, out in the world, they’re being attacked by a thousand demons.
We forget to look at life this way because we get full of ourselves. If you’re full of the devil, that can be cast out; but if you’re full of yourself, that’s a whole different problem.
What we need is to see people the way God sees them and to feel what God feels. Otherwise, we’ll be judgmental and self-righteous. When we’re tired and we feel the temptation to be short or be about ourselves, we have to pray, “Holy Spirit, come. Help me see this person like God sees them. What do you feel? Help me serve them.”

The New Covenant Christmas

Restoring the true meaning of Christmas goes far beyond having Christian carols or manger scenes in public places. How many of you know you can have a manger in a courthouse or carols in a mall and still have a heathen nation? Something more has to change in our nation, and it’s not just the externals but the internal. We might argue that ‘the internal’ is making sure that we remember baby Jesus in the manger. That’s certainly part of it, but I want to go one step more and say that it’s not just remembering Jesus’ birthday. Jesus isn’t in heaven, pacing back and forth, kind of worried and saying, “Man, these guys are forgetting my birthday. America used to really give me a great birthday, and now it seems so diminished.”
No, Christ is not worried about that, and he’s not just wanting us to gather around a Christmas tree with our families and sing carols and remember that he was born. It goes deeper than that. He wants us to acknowledge and understand the true reason for his entire life here on earth and ultimately his sacrifice. He came to set us free from sin and to put us in a right relationship with God. All of those aspects of what he came to do and to give us is what we celebrate in a ‘New Covenant’ Christmas.
In the book of Isaiah, God says, “In a time of favor I have answered you; in a day of salvation I have helped you; I will keep you and give you as a covenant to the people, to establish the land, to apportion the desolate heritages, saying to the prisoners, ‘Come out,’ to those who are in darkness, ‘Appear.’ They…shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them” (Isaiah 49:8-10, ESV).
We see in this verse God the Father saying to us that he is going to send his Son, Christ Jesus. The manger, the Bethlehem story, the Luke 1-2 story is a story not just where we celebrate a baby, but that God came into human form for the purpose of the New Covenant being unveiled to us.
This Christmas season, thank God for the New Covenant. Thank God for the liberty that his Son Christ Jesus brought. Thank God for grace, freedom and deliverance. AMEN

Our Savior Still Prays for Us

I don’t think any of us can comprehend the great conflict raging right now in the spiritual realm. Nor do we realize how determined Satan is to destroy all believers who have fixed their hungering hearts firmly on Christ. In our Christian walk, the moment we cross that line into a life of obedience to God’s Word and dependence on Jesus alone, we become a threat to the kingdom of darkness and a prime target of demonic principalities and powers. The testimony of every believer who turns to the Lord with all his heart includes the sudden onslaught of strange and intense troubles.
In the gospel of Luke, Jesus introduces this subject of the sifting of saints. “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to me, strengthen your brethren” (Luke 22:31-32, NKJV). In Christ’s day, grain workers used a sieve just before they sacked grain. They shoveled wheat into a square box covered with netting then shook it violently. The grit and dirt fell through the netting until only the grain kernels remained.
There are trials, and then there is sifting. I see sifting as one major, all-out satanic onslaught. It is usually compressed into a short but very intense period of time. For Peter, the sifting would only last a few days, but those days would become the most faith-shaking, shocking and remorseful days of his life. It could have destroyed his witness once and for all.
Thank God, Peter’s faith did not fail. As surely as Jesus prayed that his “faith fail not,” he prays for us in the same manner. The Lord gives all of us that kind of love!
In our walk with God, we have yet another ‘It is written’ with which we can do battle against Satan. It is this: “I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail.” You can tell the devil, “You may have gotten permission to sift me, to try to tear at my faith; but you need to know this: My Savior is praying for me!”

'Tis the Season of Encouragement

December 25, 2021
During this season, we see so many people, young people especially, who have lost heart and lost hope. They don’t see any reason to go on living; they don’t see a purpose for the future, and it’s really one of the modern-day tragedies of our times.
If you turn to the gospel of Luke, it talks about how God came to each one of us. Angels announced Christ’s birth to shepherds, and then “Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!’” (Luke 2:13-14, NKJV). Think about this for a moment! The God who created us and the universe, who could destroy it all with a thought of his mind; but what does he do with all of his might, glory and righteousness? He comes down to earth, to a little town called Bethlehem, because he was not willing to destroy his creation.
Jesus himself stated this. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Who could deliver Paul from his body of death? Who could deliver Elijah from his despair and desire to die?
Sometimes we rush ahead, though; we don’t just take life day-by-day and ask for the strength to face this day. God, though, walks with those who walk with him. He gives strength and provision, and we become a new creation.
We don’t become religious; we become a new person. How many of you are a different person than you were even a year ago? You’re living in the miraculous now. I know I don’t stand here by any natural ability. I know I stand by something God gave to me when I chose to walk with him. There’s no limitation to what can be done or endured when God is at the very center of our lives.
This is not a season to be discouraged if you know God or even if you want to know God. This is a season of joy which no man can take from us if we entrust ourselves to Christ! That’s why the angels sang ‘Joy to the world!’ We have peace with God. AMEN

Dethroning Our Great Idol

The church as we know it today began with repentance. When Peter preached the cross at Pentecost, thousands came to Christ. This new church was made up of one body, consisting of all races, filled with love for one another. Its corporate life was marked by evangelism, a spirit of sacrifice and even martyrdom.
The wonderful beginning reflects God’s words about Israel: “I had planted you a noble vine, a seed of highest quality.” The rest of that verse describes what often happens to such works. “How then have you turned before me into the degenerate plant of an alien vine?” (Jeremiah 2:21, NKJV). God was saying, “I planted you right. You were mine, bearing my name and nature, but now you’ve turned degenerate.”
What caused this degeneration in the church? It always has been and will continue to be idolatry. God is speaking of idolatry when he says to Jeremiah, “Has a nation changed its gods, which are not gods? But my people have changed their glory for what does not profit.” (Jeremiah 2:11).
Most Christian teaching today identifies an idol as anything that comes between God’s people and himself, yet that’s only a partial description of idolatry. Idolatry has to do with a much deeper heart issue. The number-one idol among God’s people isn’t adultery, pornography or alcohol. It’s a much more powerful lust.
What is this idol? It’s a driving ambition for success. It even has a doctrine to justify it. A man of the world once said, “He who dies with the most toys wins.”
Tragically, Christians are also caught up in this pursuit. How far we have strayed from the gospel of living through dying to self, ego and worldly ambition. The idolatry of being successful describes many in God’s house today. These people are upright, morally clean, full of good works; but they’ve set up an idol of ambition in their hearts, and they can’t be shaken from it.
God loves to bless his people. He wants his people to succeed in all they undertake honestly, but there is now a raging spirit in the land that is overtaking multitudes: this is the spirit of love for recognition and acquiring of things.

It is impossible to live a holy life without spending much time on your knees, seeking God for the power and authority to lead such a life. We see this in Daniel’s life, as well as God’s response to such a seeker.
“I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes…. Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God, yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering” (Daniel 9:3, 20-21, NKJV).
Don’t be mistaken; faithful praying will not keep you out of a crisis. On the contrary, it will most likely bring you to a furnace of trials, but prayer will prepare you to face it all with trust, to become a living sacrifice for Jesus’ sake.
Daniel’s praying led him straight to the lions’ den, and this test came when Daniel was in his old age, after years of faithful service to his king and dedication to his God. This may frighten you, especially if you wonder how long it will be before you stop having crises. Perhaps you thought you’d learned all your “important” lessons after a certain number of years in the Lord, but here God is allowing one of his greatest prayer warriors — a man of a quiet, tender spirit — to face the crisis of his life after decades of faithful intercession!
This is why Paul, in his command for believers to put on their spiritual armor, ended with “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:18).
Beloved, the testing only ends when Jesus comes or when you die in Christ! This is why prayer is so important. You can make a commitment to live an undefiled life, but that commitment is impossible to fulfill without also having a commitment to seek God.

God Knows Your Every Hurt

Remind yourself that God knows exactly how much you can take, and he will not permit you to reach a breaking point. Our loving Father said, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13, NKJV).
The worst kind of blasphemy is to think God is behind all your hurt and pain, that it is the heavenly Father harshly punishing you, that God thinks you need one or two more heartbreaks before you are ready to receive his blessings. Not so!
It is true that the Lord chastens those he loves, but that chastening is only for a season, and it is not meant to break us. God is not the author of confusion in your life. The enemy often tries to hurt us through other humans, just as he tried to hurt Job through an unbelieving wife.
Your heavenly Father watches over you with an unwavering eye. Every move is monitored; every tear is bottled. He feels your every hurt, and he knows when you have been exposed to enough harassment from the enemy. He steps in and says, “Enough!” When your pain no longer draws you close to the Lord and, instead, begins to downgrade your spiritual life, God moves in. He will not permit a trusting child of his to go under because of too much pain and agony in their soul.
God will lift you out of the battle for a while. He will never allow your hurt to destroy your mind. He promises to come, right on time, to wipe away your tears and give you joy for mourning.
God’s Word says, “You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, to the end that my glory may sing praise to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever” (Psalm 30:11-12). God will strengthen our hearts as we go through pain, and he will give us reason to rejoice in his glorious power in due season.

A Path through Adversity

Keith Holloway

In 1 Samuel 30, we read about how David was in deep distress and how he dealt with it. This man had a lot of reasons to be miserable. He was deeply distressed because the call on his life, the prophecy Samuel had spoken over him that he would be king, looked like it wasn’t coming to pass. He was probably also distressed because his great relationship with Jonathan had been broken by time and distance. He certainly was distressed because King Saul was coming after him, saying evil things against him and trying to kill him.
The chapter begins where David had just found out that his own family had been taken by the Amalekites, and he didn’t know where they were at or if they were even alive. Then this happened: “Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God” (1 Samuel 30:6, NKJV).
Many of you can probably think of some things that are bringing you distress in your life. What is giving you anxiety right now? What kinds of things keep you awake at night?
There are sources of distress that come upon you that are just part of life, but then there are people who deliberately speak against you and undermine you. The challenges seem to come back-to-back, and your stress builds. At first, you may be able to talk yourself through it and keep steady. As time goes on — weeks, months, maybe even years for some of you — the situations become overwhelming. This is where David was at this point, so how did he strengthen himself in the Lord?
That might sound like a paradox. When you’re under a lot of stress, that seems like the time that you would not be able to strengthen yourself. David is an illustration for us in this; if he could do it, you can do it! He didn’t manage this out of his own ability. Scripture is clear; David strengthened himself in God.
You have a choice today. You can allow all of those negative natural elements to crash over you like a wave, or you can rise up and find strength in your Lord because God is right there with you. AMEN

The Prayer of the Righteous

Why is it that none of us pray as we should? We know that our burdens can all be lifted when we are shut in with him. The voice of the Holy Spirit keeps calling us to prayer, “Come!” Come to the water that satisfies our souls’ thirst. Come to the Father who pities his children. Come to the Lord of life who promises to forgive every sin we have committed. Come to the God who refuses to condemn you, forsake you or hide from you.
The Lord promises his people, “For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your offspring” (Isaiah 44:3, NKJV).
We may try to hide from God because of guilt and condemnation, but he never hides from us. Come boldly to his throne of grace, even when you have sinned and failed. He instantly forgives those who repent with godly sorrow. You don’t have to spend hours and days in remorse and guilt or earn your way back into his good graces.
We try everything except prayer. We read books, looking for formulas and guidelines. We go to friends, ministers and counselors, searching everywhere for a word of comfort or advice. We seek mediators and forget the one Mediator who has the answer to everything.
The New Testament urges believers, “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:13-16).
Nothing dispels anxiety and emptiness more quickly than an hour or two shut in with God. Nothing can take the place of praying to the Father in that secluded secret closet. Go to the Father, bend your knees, open your heart and cry out your anguish. Tell him about your loneliness, fears and failures. That is the solution to all of the turmoil in our hearts.

The Presence of Peace and Joy

The Bible affirms that a wife and children are a gift from the Lord. “Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your fleeting life which he has given you under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 9:9, AMP) and “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Psalm 127:3, ESV).
Before going any further in that line of thought, however, admit that if you are the parent of a teenager in the midst of an existential crisis where everything is called into question, it is possible that you have wondered if this ‘gift’ was exchangeable, or at least refundable.
Take courage. Adolescence, like thunderstorms, eventually passes.
More seriously, though, I would like you to take hold of a supremely important realization for your family that could change your present and your future. Not only are children a gift from the Lord, but parents are called to be a gift from the Lord to their children. Let me share with you a practical tip from Ecclesiastes and the Psalms for your daily life.
Take pleasure in the woman you love. Gentlemen, the most amazing gift you can give your children every day is to love their mom. Give them the gift of seeing you rejoice and laugh with their mother. Be a gift of joy to your children by loving your wife. To love your wife is also to make a commitment before God to not argue in front of your children. There will always be sources of frustration and conflict, but make the decision to talk about it later, one-on-one, when the children are away.
We are human, and we have all failed to do this before. However, I encourage you to renew this covenant and to dedicate yourselves to this prayer: “Lord, put a guard over my mouth, and help me with my speech to my bride. Let my children not hear me verbally attack or denigrate their mother. On the contrary, let them hear and see me honoring her, loving her, appreciating her, valuing her and giving her affection.”
With this decision to keep the peace, our presence becomes a priceless gift from the Lord to our children. Let’s be gifts of forgiveness, patience and peace to our families. The model of our behavior will be the most impactful message in their lives.

The Works of True Faith

Hebrews 11 gives us this image of Jacob in his old age: “By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff” (Hebrews 11:21, NKJV). Why is Jacob portrayed in his dying days instead of when he was outsmarting his deceitful father-in-law or wrestling with an angel?
Jacob knew his life was about to end. What does Jacob do as he looks back on the events of his life? He is moved to worship. As he leaned on his staff, he marveled at the life God had given him. Jacob worshipped God in that moment because his soul was at rest. He had proven God faithful beyond any shadow of a doubt. Now the patriarch concluded, “It never mattered what battle I went through. God proved himself faithful to me. He has always been faithful. O Lord, almighty God, I worship you!”
That’s why we see him giving his blessing to his grandchildren. Jacob knew God would fulfill his covenant to the nation of Israel beyond even his own life. His blessing to his grandchildren, his actions, spoke to this faith. There was a reason God wanted this kind of faith for Jacob and his descendants. They would endure slavery, deprivation, danger and suffering. God said, “I want a people who aren’t afraid of death because they know I am trustworthy in all things.”
God wants the same faith in his promises from us. We are called to walk and act in faith that he will see every promise to completion.
This is why James wrote, “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,’ but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:14-17). AMEN

The Making of a True Worshipper

A true worshipper is one who has learned to trust God no matter what his situation in life. This person’s joy isn’t just in his words but in his whole way of life. His world is always at rest because his trust in God’s faithfulness is unshakable. He isn’t afraid of the future because he’s no longer afraid to die.
That is the rest God wants for his people. It’s a confidence that says, like Paul, “Live or die, I am the Lord’s.” This is what makes a completely sold-out follower of God. God wants his people to have a faith that declares, “He who began this miracle for us will finish it. He has already proven to us he’s faithful."
A true worshipper isn’t someone who dances after the victory is won. It isn’t the person who sings God’s praises once the enemy has been vanquished. That’s what the Israelites did. When God parted the Red Sea and they arrived on the other side, they sang and danced, praised God and extolled his greatness. Yet, three days later, these same people murmured bitterly against God, at Marah. These weren’t worshippers; they were shallow shouters!
I pray that all who read this message can say in the midst of their hardships or worries, “Yes, the economy may collapse. Yes, I may still be facing a sickness or failing relationship, but God has proven himself faithful to me. No matter what comes, I will rest in his love for me.”
As we look back, we will see that all our fears are wasted. We will see that God desires only to do good to us. We’ve seen his power and glory on our behalf. Now we must be determined to no longer live in fear. Live or die, we are the Lord’s. AMEN

Preparation for the Perfect King

There is a repeated pattern throughout the history of the Old Testament where God set up a shepherd over a household or a family, but that shepherd failed to lead completely righteously. It can seem so confusing at first, but God has a point. First, though, let’s look at the leaders he raised up.
You have Adam, the first shepherd over his family. In his silence and passivity, he allowed his wife to go off into sin. Instead of rebuking and correcting her, he entered into that same sin with her. He wasn’t a faithful shepherd.
You go on then to Noah. A lot of us say Noah was a righteous man. He faithfully built the ark and led his family through a world-wide flood. A rainbow appeared. God gave them a great promise, and what happened next? Noah was in his tent, getting drunk then naked. Was he a faithful shepherd? God said no.
How about Moses? He was charged with making sure the people of Israel witnessed and trusted God’s promises and victory. Moses got the whole nation to the Promise Land border, but because of his unbelief and outburst of anger, he couldn’t go in himself. Someone else had to do it.
David did a pretty good job, except for adultery and murder and a couple of other problems. At one point, he offered to build this beautiful tabernacle for the Lord, and the Lord said to him, “You’re not the kind of shepherd that I want to build my house; your hands aren’t clean.”
All throughout history you see God raising up shepherds. Some of them do a decent job, but none of them are completely righteous or good. They aren’t able to get people into the place God longs for them to be. It seems hopeless, but the prophet Jeremiah tells us that this was part of God’s glorious intention from the foundation of the world. The imperfect pastors and leaders would prepare us to see why God needed to send the perfect shepherd, Jesus Christ. “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land” (Jeremiah 23:5, ESV).
Only Christ’s leadership is perfect. Only he can shepherd us along the right path. Jesus is the only way and truth which brings out abundant life in our hearts.

An Urgent Message

David Wilkerson (1931-2011)

I am compelled by the Holy Spirit to send out an urgent message to friends and to church leaders we have met all over the world. An earth-shattering calamity is about to happen. It is going to be so frightening that we are all going to tremble, even the godliest among us. We are under God’s wrath. In the psalms, it is written, “For look! The wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow on the string, that they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart. If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:2-3, NKJV).
In Psalm 11:6, David warns, “Upon the wicked He will rain coals; fire and brimstone and a burning wind shall be the portion of their cup.” This is a righteous judgment, just as in the judgments of Sodom and in Noah’s generation.
The prophet Jeremiah pleaded with wicked Israel, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I am fashioning a disaster and devising a plan against you. Return now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.’” (Jeremiah 18:11). Instead of repenting, though, “They said, ‘That is hopeless! So we will walk according to our own plans, and we will every one obey the dictates of his evil heart.’” (Jeremiah 18:12).
God is judging the raging sins of America and the nations, but what about God’s people? What shall the righteous do?
For our spiritual reaction, we have two options. This is outlined in Psalm 11. We can “flee like a bird to a mountain” (v. 1); or do as the psalmist did: “In the Lord I put my trust” (v. 1) because “He loves righteousness; his countenance beholds the upright” (v. 7).
I will say to my soul, “No need to run. No need to hide. This is God’s righteous work. I will behold our Lord on his throne with his eye of loving kindness, watching over every step I take. I will trust that he will deliver his people even through floods, fires and calamities of all kinds.”
I do not know when these things will come to pass, but I know it is not far off. I have unburdened my soul to you. Do with the message as you choose.
Time is running out.....Keep looking up for our Lord's return is at hand!

Not Consumed by the Storm

We are to listen carefully to the warnings of the watchmen, but we are not to become obsessed with their warnings. We're to gather all the knowledge we can about the coming storm so we can prepare our hearts for whatever destruction it brings.
However, we are not to let fear or anxiety consume our thinking, dominate our minds or take hold of our hearts!
Darkness is certainly coming, and judgment is at our very door. As God's people, though, we cannot allow any cloud of darkness to hide the light of his great promises of love and mercy toward his children. We are to be well informed by the Lord's words and prophets, but we are not to dwell on prophetic knowledge so much that it takes over our lives.
The devil would love for that to happen. He knows if he can't get you to doubt God's Word concerning judgment, he'll take you to another extreme by driving you to a fearful obsession with perilous times. The deceiver will try to rob you of all hope by consuming you with thoughts of foreboding.
The apostle Paul reassures us about such things with this instruction: "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things" (Philippians 4:8). Paul is telling us, "You've heard all the warnings. Now simply take heed to what God's Word reveals and to what his watchmen are saying. Then, finally, fix all your thoughts on Jesus and his goodness."
I have warned that Christians are going to suffer, that there will be great loss and hardship, and that right now multitudes of precious saints all over the world are enduring unbelievable tribulation. None of these things is the focus of all my energies and ministry. No, the deepest expression of my soul is to proclaim the love of the Father and the tender mercy of our savior Jesus.
I acknowledge the world’s evil, and I grieve over it in my prayer closet; but I know that God alone is in control of all these things. When I go to bed at night, I fix my mind on whatever is pure, noble and praiseworthy.

God’s Boot Camp

Carter Conlon

Shortly after my eldest son went off to boot camp to become a Marine, he began to send me fairly desperate letters. He even reached out to the heavyweights, asking me to please get Pastor David Wilkerson and others to pray for him.
It was easy for me to empathize with his desperation once I went down to North Carolina and got a tour of what these young men and women had to experience. Our country’s military has procedures designed to make young men and women into soldiers. These tests and challenges are so severe that they are almost impossible to endure. These young people go in, believing they have the world by the tail, but not long into the process, they realize that their perspective is not true at all.
They often don’t realize at first that all this hardship is necessary in order to prepare them to be soldiers. They are being trained to be obedient and to take orders; they are building stamina that will enable them to stand against insurmountable odds. They are being taught about unity and perseverance; fear is being driven out of their hearts.
God desires the same end result for us as his church. It requires us, however, to undergo intense training. We would all like to come into the kingdom of God, to hear from the Lord, to get filled with the Holy Spirit and then to move forward unhindered as we wield the sword of the Spirit. Those kinds of easy accomplishments, though, will never prepare us for true spiritual battle.
Psalm 105:19 says, “…the word of the Lord tested him.” Another meaning for the word “tested” is “to be fitted for the battle.” When we find ourselves on a long journey or in an intense struggle, it will be easy for us to lose heart along the way.
That is why we must remember that the Lord is fitting us for the battle ahead. Just as men and women are trained for battle once they join the military, there is a process that the Lord must take his people through in order to prepare them for the spiritual war that they either knowingly or unknowingly find themselves in. With this in mind, we gain a better perspective on the trials we may be going through. They are for our benefit.

A Song Out of Bitterness

In Isaiah 38, God tells King Hezekiah, “You’re dying. It’s over.” Hezekiah begins to grieve and goes into great despair. “I said, I shall not see the Lord, the Lord in the land of the living; I shall look on man no more among the inhabitants of the world. My dwelling is plucked up and removed from me like a shepherd's tent…from day to night you bring me to an end; I calmed myself until morning” (Isaiah 38:11-13, ESV).
His goal is just “I hope I can make it through the night.” Have you ever had an argument with a husband or wife to the point where you couldn’t sleep at night? All you could do is try to calm yourself until the morning? Have you ever had one of those emergency phone calls in the middle of the night that kept you up until the sun rose? That is Hezekiah’s cry of the soul.
He goes on to say, “What shall I say? For he has spoken to me, and he himself has done it. I walk slowly all my years because of the bitterness of my soul” (Isaiah 38:15). The circumstances that he finds himself in are so difficult that there’s a heaviness to his soul. Now the bitterness here is not “I am bitterly angry at somebody and holding a grudge.” It’s tasting something in life that causes bitterness to come into the mouth then into the gut, and it slows his whole system down.
Look at the word of the Lord here, though. Hezekiah says something that would be rejected in 90 percent of the pulpits in America today. “Behold, it was for my welfare that I had great bitterness; but in love you have delivered my life from the pit of destruction, for you have cast all my sins behind your back” (Isaiah 38:17).
He said that this bitterness of soul worked something good in his life. Most of us want to rebuke the bitterness of soul. Many of us want to pretend it was never there in the first place. Instead, we are called to trust God even in the bitterest circumstances. Praise him when things are going well. Praise him when things are difficult. Praise him when there’s healing. Praise him when there’s suffering. We are called to praise the Lord. AMEN

The Lessons of the Lion’s Den

Faith begins with a total abandonment of oneself into God’s care, but our faith must be active, not passive. We must have full confidence that God can and will do the impossible. We see in scripture “Jesus looked at them and said to them, ‘With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible’” (Matthew 19:26, NKJV) and “For with God nothing will be impossible” (Luke 1:37).
In short, faith always says, “God is enough!”
The Lord makes men and women of faith by leading them into impossible situations. He wants to hear his servants say, “Father, you led me here, and you know best. So I’m going to stand still and believe you to do the impossible. I’ll put my life in your hands, fully trusting you.”
Our faith is not meant to get us out of a hard place or change our painful conditions. Rather, it is meant to reveal God’s faithfulness to us in the midst of our dire situation. God does at times change our trying circumstances; but far more often, he doesn’t because he wants to change us.
We simply can’t trust God’s power fully until we experience it in our crises. This was the case with Daniel and his three friends. His friends saw Christ only when they were in the midst of the fiery furnace, and Daniel experienced God’s power and grace when he was thrust into the lions’ den. If they had suddenly been pulled out of their circumstances, they never would have known the full grace of God’s miracle-working power, and the Lord would not have been magnified before the ungodly.
We think we’re witnessing great miracles whenever God ends our storms and crises, but we can easily miss the lesson of faith in such times. That lesson is that God will remain faithful to us through our hard times. He wants to lift us above our trials through faith so that we will say, “My God can do the impossible. He’s a deliverer, and he’s going to see me through.”

The High Priest of Peace

Jesus died on the cross to purchase peace with God for us, and he’s in heaven now to maintain that peace for us and in us. The peace we have with God through Christ distinguishes our faith from all other religions.
In every other religion besides Christianity, the sin question is never settled. Sin’s dominion simply hasn’t been broken. Therefore, “’There is no peace,’ says the Lord, ‘for the wicked.’” (Isaiah 48:22, NKJV), but we have a God who provides peace by pardoning sin. This is the very reason Jesus came to earth: to bring peace to troubled, fearful humankind. How does Jesus maintain God’s peace for us? He does it in three ways.
First, Christ’s blood removed the guilt of our sin. In this sense, Paul says, “For he himself is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14). Jesus made peace for us through his blood.
Second, Christ maintains our peace and joy in belief. “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).
Third, Jesus causes us to rejoice at the hope of entering glory. “We…rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:2).
Simply put, peace is the absence of fear, so a life without fear is a life full of peace. When Jesus ascended to heaven, he didn’t just bask in the glory that God bestowed on him. No, he went to the Father to maintain the hard-won peace he achieved for us at Calvary.
Our Savior is alive in glory right now, and he’s both fully God and fully human with hands, feet, eyes and hair. He also has the nail scars on his hands and feet as well as the wound in his side. He has never discarded his humanity; he is still a man in glory. Right now, our man in eternity is working to make sure we’re never robbed of the peace he gave us when he left. He’s ministering as our high priest, actively involved in keeping his body on earth full of his peace. And when he comes again he wants us to “be found by him in peace” (2 Peter 3:14).

Turning Tragedy into Triumph

Keith Holloway

Today we are a nation that is headed toward tragedy unless we turn tragedy into triumph. I know that this is true, and I'm going to share what scripture says is the solution. Beginning in the book of Jeremiah, God had called the prophet into his service, and Jeremiah had to go and speak to a nation that had largely rejected God. They had reimaged God into a different kind of deity and had brought in false religions and false practices.
God, through Jeremiah, repeatedly called them back to him for 40 years. God told them over and over, “If you don't come back to me, I'll allow your sins to correct you. If you will not be corrected, then a tragedy will befall this nation.”
America is called a Christian nation, but if you've been listening, if you've been watching, even more if you've been discerning by the Holy Spirit according to God's word, you will know that we really are a post-Christian society and that we are in a downward spiral. There are the following three kinds of people in every nation: the rejecters of God, the religious toward God and the relational with God. If those who are relational with God dwindle, a society very quickly gets into a bad spot. So how do we turn tragedy into triumph?
After Israel had rejected the Lord, broken so many commandments, brought all these defiling practices into their society and broken the Father’s heart, “[God] said, after she had done all these things, ‘Return to me.’” (Jeremiah 3:7, NKJV).
Isn't that wonderful? God says, “Just acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against the Lord your God. If you will do this, if you will truly confess your sins, if you will come to me with your whole heart, I will heal you.”
Paul captured the right response to this in his writings, with a heart of anguish and repentance. “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24-25). Today, we have to hear this word of Christ: “Return to me!” This is it. It's simplicity, my friends. All that America has done and is doing right now that is rushing us toward judgment. The word of God says still, “Turn and repent. Return to me.”

Our Unconquerable Joy

We who know Christ’s righteousness are not to live as those who are without hope. We have been blessed with both the love and the fear of God.
What does God want his people to know in light of this truth? He says it all in one verse, “So the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness; sorrow and sighing shall flee away” (Isaiah 51:11, NKJV). In other words: “I’m going to have a people who return to me with trust, faith and confidence. They’ll take their eyes off the conditions surrounding them, and they’ll get back their song of joy.”
God’s will for us in the darkest, most terrible times is to obtain his joy and gladness. Even as we see judgment falling around us, we’re to sing and rejoice, not because judgment has come but in spite of it.
Isaiah 51:11 begins with a Hebrew word that means “In light of what I’ve just said.” What had the prophet just said? He was speaking to God: “Are you not the one who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep; that made the depths of the sea a road for the redeemed to cross over?” (Isaiah 51:10). Isaiah was reminding Israel that God had promised them and demonstrated his passion to save them. This verse is saying, “I’m still the Lord, the Ancient of Days, the worker of miracles. My arm is still strong to deliver you.”
Next, the joy that God’s people experience won’t be just for a Sunday morning, or a week or a month. It is everlasting, and that means it will go on through the years, through hard times, even to the very end. God looked down through the ages and said, “I’m going to have a people who will obtain joy and possess it. They’ll lay hold of it, and it will be theirs.”
Finally, this doesn’t mean all our suffering will end. It means our trust in the Lord will put us above every pain and trial. If we embrace this, nothing will be able to rob us of our joy and gladness in Christ.

Preserved for a Purpose

Joseph had a vision that his life would be used mightily by God, but that vision seemed like a pipe dream after his jealous brothers sold him into slavery. The following years of Joseph’s life were filled with hardship and injustice. Just when Joseph seemed to get back on his feet, he was falsely accused of attempted rape and sent to prison. Finally, after years of turmoil, Joseph ended up serving in Pharaoh’s house. Pharaoh eventually appointed Joseph ruler over all of Egypt.
Beloved, that’s how God works; he was preparing a man to save a remnant. Indeed, in every generation, the Lord raises up a ‘Joseph Company.’ He takes these devoted servants through years of trouble and trials to prove and strengthen their faith.
What does this mean? Scripture says, “He sent a man before them—Joseph—who was sold as a slave. They hurt his feet with fetters, he was laid in irons. Until the time that his word came to pass, the word of the Lord tested him” (Psalm 105:17–19, NKJV).
Joseph told his brothers, “God sent me before you to preserve a posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So now it was not you who sent me here, but God; and he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt” (Genesis 45:7–8).
What an incredible revelation for Joseph, yet what is the lesson here for God’s people today? It is this: Our Lord has preserved us in the past, and he will preserve us in the days ahead. Most importantly of all, he preserved you because he has a purpose for you. He has laid out a divine work ahead of you, and only a tested and proven believer can accomplish it.
The Joseph Company are godly men and women whom God has touched and called. They don’t seek fame or fortune. All they want is to live and die fulfilling the calling God has placed on them, and the Lord promised their lives would count for his kingdom.
This is not a time for timid faith. It’s a time when every Christian who has endured great testing must step forward. Our captain is calling us to stand up amidst a fearful society and engage in “power faith.”

The Distinguishing Mark of Jesus’ Presence

In Acts 3, we find Peter and John going to the temple to worship. Just outside the temple gate sat a beggar who had been crippled from birth. Peter told him to stand and walk in the name of Jesus, and the man was healed!
When Peter and John saw crowds gathering to marvel at the miracle, they began preaching Christ. Thousands were saved. While Peter and John were preaching, the synagogue rulers asked the disciples, “By what power or by what name have you done this?” (Acts 4:7, NKJV). Peter was emboldened by the Holy Ghost and essentially told them, “His name is Jesus Christ, the man you crucified three weeks ago. God raised him from the dead, and now he’s the power that healed this man. No one can be saved by any other name than Christ’s name” (see Acts 4:10–12).
The rulers sat stunned. “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). What was the mark that distinguished Peter and John? It was the presence of Jesus. They had Christ’s own likeness and Spirit.
Those who spend time with Jesus can’t get enough of him. Their hearts continually cry out to know the Master better and draw closer to him. Paul states, “To each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift” (Ephesians 4:7). What is this measure? It means a limited amount. In other words, we’ve all received a certain amount of the saving knowledge of Christ.
For some believers, this initial measure is all they ever desire. They want just enough of Jesus to escape judgment, to feel forgiven, to keep a good reputation and to endure an hour of church each Sunday. Such people are in “maintenance mode,” and they give Jesus only the bare requirements.
God has given you spiritual gifts not so you can maintain your life as it is! He wants you to be filled up with Christ’s Spirit. This is crucial because deceivers are coming to rob you of your faith. If you’re rooted in Christ and maturing in him, no deceptive doctrine will ever sway you. The only way to grow to such maturity, though, is by wanting more of Jesus until you are distinguished even to unbelievers by his mark. AMEN

The Good and Faithful Servant

Skeptics love to come into our lives and say things like “Hey, I love your vision and passion; they’re great. But why risk it? Some people aren’t going to like it. You’ll probably get some negative feedback. You might make some people outright angry. If you offend somebody, why do what you’re called to do by God?”
Why give half your money away to the poor, if your family says, “That’s a stupid thing to do”? Why go ahead and keep doing what God’s called you to do when you might provoke the wrath of the skeptics around you? Why?
Because you’re not called to please man. You are called to please God. We see in the Bible that “Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than men’” (Acts 5:29, ESV). You’re not here to make everybody happy with your decisions. Children of God, you must be willing to make tough decisions that sometimes go against the current and are unpopular. When you make those choices, not everybody will go along with you.
Some people might say, “In this economy, you starting your own business is the most foolish thing!” If God has told you to start your own business, though, you don’t look at the economy. You don’t listen to the skeptics’ voices around you. You don’t look at anything else except Jesus and where he’s calling you.
Now in this economy I’d ask God twice, but I would say, “God, oh God, oh God, take away from me any residue of that spirit to appease man. God, rend my heart of that attitude that says, ‘I want to make sure everybody around me likes me. I want to make sure everybody pats me on the back all the time.’” It’s time that we get some spiritual gumption and say, “I don’t care what man says about me. I don’t care what the world thinks about this ridiculous faith-effort that I’m moving into because I’m going to obey God and not man.”
Fear disobedience and the disapproval of God more than you do the disapproval of man. I’m going to listen to his voice, and I want him to speak over me, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master” (Matthew 25:23).

How Much of God Do You Want?

Surrender. What does this word tell you? In literal terms, surrender means “to give up something to another person.” It also means to relinquish something granted to you. This could include your possessions, power, goals or even your life. Christians today hear much about the surrendered life, but what does it mean exactly?
Jesus lived a perfectly surrendered life: “For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me” (John 6:38, NKJV) and“I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks and judges” (John 8:50). Christ never did anything on his own. He made no move and spoke no word without being instructed by the Father. “I do nothing of myself; but as my Father taught me, I speak these things…. The Father has not left me alone, for I always do those things that please him” (8:28–29).
Jesus’ full surrender to the Father is an example of how we all should live. You may try to excuse yourself, saying, “Jesus was God in flesh,” but the surrendered life is not imposed on anyone, including Jesus. “Therefore my Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.” (John 10:17–18).
Jesus was telling us, “Make no mistake. My Father gave me the choice to pass up this cup and avoid the cross, but I chose to do it out of love and full surrender to him.”
Our heavenly Father has given all of us this same right: the privilege to choose a surrendered life. No one is forced to yield his life to God. He freely offers us a Promised Land full of milk, honey and fruit; but we may choose not to enter.
When we stand before God at the judgment, we won’t be judged by our ministries, achievements or number of converts. There will be one measure of success on that day: Were our hearts fully surrendered to God? Did we succumb to peer pressure and follow the crowd, or did we seek him alone for direction? The truth is that we can have as much of Christ as we want. AMEN

February 23, 2022

In Exodus 34:14, we read that God is a jealous God. The verse refers to the second commandment, found in Exodus 20:4-6, which says:

"You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."

The Scripture calls us to have an undivided heart. Today is an excellent day to examine your heart, time, and possessions to ensure you are putting and keeping God first in your life.

God's jealousy is to be honored because He is God and wants the best for us. He loves us and longs to have an ongoing relationship with us. If we are putting other things before God, we miss out on knowing and loving Him. May these words from verse 1 of the song "How He Loves," recorded by David Crowder, remind you of God's love for you.

"He is jealous for me, Love's like a hurricane, I am a tree, Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy, When all of a sudden I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory, And I realize just how beautiful You are, And how great Your affections are for me, And oh, how He loves us, oh, Oh, how He loves us, How He loves us oh."

Heavenly Father, I praise you for your everlasting love. I pray that each person who reads this will establish you as their first love. May the Holy Spirit be free to convict and root out anything that hinders one's love relationship with you and that each person will confess anything that keeps them from seeking you first. Thank you for your redemptive love. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

I encourage you now to look at the following resources to inform you as you lift up matters of importance for the advancement of faith, family, and freedom.

Wholly Dependent on Him

God took the little nation of Israel and isolated them in a wilderness. He was placing them in a school of testing to produce a people who would trust in him no matter the circumstances. He wanted Israel to testify, “I can go through any test, any difficulty, even those beyond my abilities. How? I know that my God is with me in every trial. He will always bring me through.”
Consider Moses’ statement to Israel: “So [God] humbled you, allowed you to hunger…that he might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8:3, NKJV).
One of the worst trials any human could undergo is recorded in Job. He lost all of his children in a tragic accident, and then he lost his possessions. Finally, he lost his physical health. All these things happened in such a short time that they were utterly overwhelming.
God had put Job on this path, and the Lord alone knew where it eventually would lead. It was a plan so divinely orchestrated that God even allowed Satan to afflict Job. That’s why Job couldn’t see God in any of it. “Look, I go forward, but he is not there, and backward, but I cannot perceive him; when he works on the left hand, I cannot behold him; when he turns to the right hand, I cannot see him. He knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:8–10). Here is an incredible statement, especially considering the context in which Job spoke it.
Job was saying, “God knows everything I’m enduring. He knows the way through it all. My Lord is trying me right now. I’m confident he’ll bring me through with a stronger faith. I’ll come out with a faith more precious than gold.”
God has always wanted a people who would be totally reliant on him before the eyes of the world. The Lord is telling us, “I orchestrated your trial. I am waiting for you to come to the end of all your self-reliance. I’m allowing you to experience a place of human helplessness, and it will require a miracle of deliverance from me.” Today, the Lord is still looking for people who’ll rely totally on him. He wants an unsaved world to see that he works mightily for those who love him.

Praying for Ukraine

Russia has “shattered peace in Europe” in one night.

In the early hours of the morning, billows of smoke could be seen rising above several major Ukrainian cities that were targets of Russian shelling and rocket attacks. The onslaught began only minutes after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that he would be conducting a “special military operation” in the neighboring country. It quickly became clear that the operation was a full-scale invasion.

Thousands of Ukrainians are trying to leave the capital city of Kyiv, causing major traffic jams, while others are choosing to stay, ready to fight for the right to live in their own country with their own government. Casualties of the day-old war are already in the hundreds and still climbing.

As innocent civilians watch in terror as their country is invaded by one of the world’s most sophisticated militaries, here are five ways you can pray for Ukraine:

1. Pray for the people of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian people are tough, and they’re not surrendering without a fight. Ever since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukrainians have learned the value of having their own sovereign democratic country, and many don’t want to return to being ruled by yet another Russian autocrat, no matter what the cost.

Ukrainians don’t know what the future holds for their country. In a moving scene on live TV, CNN’s Clarissa Ward captured footage of a small group of Ukrainians kneeling to pray in a city square in Kharkiv in the freezing cold.

As these Ukrainians, and surely so many others like them, are driven to their knees in prayer, we should join them. Pray for safety for the people of Ukraine, that residential areas would not be targeted, and that God would comfort those who are afraid. Many Ukrainians are Christian; pray that their faith would be strengthened to withstand this trying time.

2. Pray for wisdom for world leaders as they respond to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring,” President Joe Biden rightly said in a tweet this week. However, world leaders bear the responsibility to respond, and the choices they make even in the next few days can shape the course of history.

Pray that they would have wisdom as they make decisions regarding sanctions, military support, and other means of deterring Russia and supporting Ukraine.

3. Pray that churches and Christian ministries in Ukraine would be equipped and ready to help in the event of a humanitarian emergency.

Ukrainian church leaders were already grappling with how to respond to an imminent invasion from Russia. Now that one is underway, they will need to lead their congregations with wisdom and courage.

The possibility of a refugee crisis becomes even more likely during a war, and churches and Christian ministries will inevitably be at the forefront, providing assistance and spiritual and material help to the displaced and hurting. Pray that God would prepare and equip ministries to aid those in need.

4. Pray for a change of heart for Russian leaders, that they would turn from war and aggression and choose peace.

Yesterday, the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations sent an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, requesting that he end his invasion. On their behalf, Chairman Hryhorii Komendant wrote:

Today we pray to the Creator of the Universe with a special request for wisdom for those who are authorized to make decisions so significant for the whole world, in whose hands the fate of humanity has turned out to be. This applies primarily to you, Mr. President of the Russian Federation. This prayer of ours is filled with hope for the generosity of the Almighty God and the openness of the heart that accepts grace.

5. Pray for peace and the expansion of freedom.

Recent years have seen a decline in freedom around the world—the Chinese government choked Hong Kong, the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, and military coups took over Sudan and Burma. This is a dangerous time for the free world and a devastating one for the people who now live under oppression.

As Putin attacks Ukraine, peace and freedom are once again under siege. This conflict benefits very few people, and even some people in Russia see that. Despite extensive government propaganda, some Russians have protested Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. In response, Russian authorities have cracked down on their own citizens, arresting at least 1,700 protestors in 53 cities.

Pray for peace in Ukraine and throughout Europe. Pray that plans intended for evil would be thwarted. Pray for the expansion of freedom around the world.

Do You Truly Believe?

God doesn’t want your home, car, furniture, savings or any of your possessions. All he wants is your strong belief in his Word, and that may be the one thing that other, more spiritual-appearing people lack. You may look at another person as being more spiritual than you, but that person may actually be struggling hard to keep up an appearance of righteousness. As God looks at you, he declares, “There is a righteous man or woman.” Why? You’ve admitted your helplessness to become righteous, and you’ve trusted in the Lord to give you his righteousness.
The writer of Hebrews tells us we are accounted as righteous in God’s eyes only with one important qualification. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NKJV). “Without faith it is impossible to please him, for he who comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
You may claim, “I believe this. I have faith in the God who resurrected Jesus.” The real question for you is do you believe the Lord can resurrect your troubled marriage? Do you believe he can bring to life a spiritually dead relative? Do you believe he can raise you up out of the pit of a debilitating habit? Do you believe the Lord can erase your cursed past? Do you trust his promise “So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten” (Joel 2:25)?
When everything looks hopeless — when you are in an impossible situation, with no resources, and no hope before you — do you believe God will be your Jehovah Jirah, seeing to your need?
Do you believe he’s committed to keeping his promises to you, and that if even one of his words fails, the heavens would melt and the universe collapse? If we are struggling to have this faith, we must go to Christ like the man with the demon-tormented son. “Jesus said to him, ‘If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.’ Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, ‘Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!’” (Mark 9:23-24).

The God of All Comfort

Carter Conlon

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too” (2 Corinthians 1:3-5, ESV).
Years ago, when I was pastoring in a small town in Canada, we met a young Christian woman who lived out the truth of this verse. She was one of those people who seemed to experience heartache after heartache.
Sometime after her husband left her and their four children, her beautiful four-year-old daughter began to appear ill. It turned out that the child had leukemia, and the disease took her life. I cannot begin to describe the incredible anguish—the wailing and the depth of sorrow—that came into that mother’s heart.
A few months later, a different lady in our community was told that she had only a short while to live. She was not a Christian, and she shut everyone out, choosing to live in total darkness and despair. Many of us attempted to visit and encourage her, but she refused to open her door to anyone…until one day. This young mother went over to the woman’s house and said, “Wait! Before you shut the door, I want to tell you that I recently lost my daughter to leukemia. I understand what you’re going through.”
The door opened, and the young mother ended up not only leading this woman to Christ but also walking with her through her difficult days until she went home to be with the Lord.
There are times when we have to ask: What is the value of a soul? Is it worth it? What price did God pay for a soul? I hope you are beginning to see how unwise we are if we live only to escape every difficulty, as if the gospel we pursue is somehow only for the sake of making us comfortable! Every trial we go through is an opportunity for the testimony of Christ to be made manifest in our lives. Learning to thank God for the trials is critical not only for our sake but for those around us.

Healing by the Shepherd’s Side

We are all familiar with Psalm 23. Its comforting message is well known even among non-believers. This renowned psalm was written by King David, and its most famous passage is in the opening verse: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
The Hebrew word David uses for ‘want’ in this verse indicates lack. David is saying, in other words, “I shall not lack anything.” When we combine this meaning with the first part of the verse, David is saying, “The Lord leads, guides and nourishes me. Because of that, I lack nothing.”
In this brief verse, David gives us yet another reflection of the Lord’s character and nature. The literal Hebrew translation of the first part of this verse is Jehovah Rohi. It means “the Lord, my shepherd.”
Jehovah Rohi is not some benign, passive figure. He isn’t a hireling who does little more than provide food and guidance. He doesn’t merely point us toward the grassy pasture and pools of water and say, “There’s what you need. Go and get it.” Nor does he turn a blind eye to our needs. He doesn’t run the other way when he hears our cries for help and sees us in trouble. No, he knows every pain we endure, every tear we shed, every hurt we feel. He knows when we’re too weary to go another step. He knows just how much we can take. Most of all, he knows how to rescue us and bring us to a place of healing. Time after time, he makes us lie down for a time of healing and restoration.
The Lord our shepherd is compelling us to follow him into his rest. The Lord says in Exodus 29:45, “I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God.” The word ‘dwell’ here means “to abide by, or to settle down beside.” This word signifies not just a passing presence but a permanent one, a presence that never leaves. It’s something God imprints permanently on our soul. It’s his very near and eternal presence.
The picture here is glorious: Our shepherd offers to come to us in the midst of our pain and depressed condition and to sit by our side. His powerful and protective presence abides with us and lies down beside us. We have this confidence that our shepherd is among us.

The God Who Pardons

Right now you may be waging a losing war against some kind of temptation. Whatever your struggle is, you’ve determined not to run away from the Lord. You refuse to give yourself over to sin’s grasp. Instead, you’ve taken God’s Word to heart.
However, like David, you’ve grown weary. Now you’ve come to a point where you feel absolutely helpless. The enemy is flooding you with despair and lies.
Your testing may become even more mystifying and unexplainable, but I want you to know that no matter what you’re going through, the Holy Ghost wants to reveal “Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:18-19, NKJV).
How is our Lord distinguished from all the other gods worshipped throughout the world? Of course, we know our God is above all others, set apart in every way; but one clear way we know the Lord to be distinguished from others is by his name: the God who pardons. Scripture reveals our Lord as the God who forgives, the only God who has the power to pardon sin.
We see this name of God confirmed throughout the scriptures. Nehemiah declared, “But you are God, ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abundant in kindness, and did not forsake them” (Nehemiah 9:17).
Moses asked the Lord for a revelation of his glory. He wasn’t allowed to see God’s face, but the Lord did reveal his glory to Moses through a revelation of his name. “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin” (Exodus 34:6–7).
David gives us the same Hebrew description of God when he wrote, “For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon you” (Psalm 86:5).
Our God does not abandon us in our struggles. He is standing ready to forgive and bring us back to him.(With open arms at that.)

A Word for the Discouraged

So much distress, affliction and sorrow are caused by sickness, disease and disaster. So many hurting believers are in the world. The Bible does tell us, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous…” However, the next phrase in this verse changes the meaning entirely: “…but the Lord delivers him out of them all” (Psalm 34:19, NKJV).
David cried, “Lord, remember David, and all his afflictions” (Psalm 132:1). This godly man faced many troubles. His prayer was, “Lord, you have delivered others out of their afflictions. Don’t forget about me. Help me. Deliver me!”
The apostle Paul also endured many afflictions. He wrote, “Now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:22-24).
Paul added, “But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses…” (2 Corinthians 6:4). Note his emphasis here “in much patience.” Have you been losing patience in your affliction? Have you become so discouraged that you’ve come to the point of casting aside your faith?
A pastor and his wife wrote, “We are so discouraged. We have been so mistreated and unappreciated. We are financially devastated, and we see very little fruit from our labors. We have prayed, believed and held onto faith; but now we are at the end of endurance. We do not want to doubt, but we need a miracle. We need to see at least some token for good, so we can go on.”
Any words I have to encourage the downcast seem inadequate, but this one thing I do know. We serve a kind and loving heavenly Father. His Word says he is touched by our afflictions, and it is my firm belief that he’s waiting for you to lay down all your fears, anxieties or questions and trust he will deliver you because of his loving kindness for you.
Lay hold of the scriptures, and let faith arise in your heart. God has not forgotten you.

The Gentle Touch of Jesus

Somebody reading this needs a touch from Jesus. When the Lord ministered here on earth, he went about healing and restoring the afflicted by simply touching them. When Jesus touched Peter’s mother-in-law, her fever left her body (see Luke 4:38-40). He touched the casket of a dead child, and the boy came to life. He touched the eyes of blind people, and they could see. He touched the ear of a deaf man who could then hear. Multitudes brought their sick and infirm, and Jesus took the time to reach out and touch them all, healing them “Then little children were brought to him that he might put his hands on them and pray” (Matthew 19:13, NKJV). Christ’s gentle touch changed everything.
If you truly know the Lord intimately, you have felt the touch of Jesus’ hand. In times of loneliness, discouragement, confusion and pain, you cried out from the depth of your soul, “Lord Jesus, I need your touch. I need to feel your presence. Come, Jesus, and touch my thirsting soul.”
Some need a touch of Jesus upon their mind. Satan has come with his wicked principalities to harass and overburden the mind with thoughts that are hellish, unbelieving, un-Christlike, fearful, thoughts of unworthiness, thoughts of God’s displeasure. Honest believers will tell you they have experienced these attacks on their mind. Satan is determined to destroy our faith and dependence on the Lord.
In scripture, the touch of Jesus came in answer to a cry. There is no evidence that he ever ignored or rejected such a cry. He will not turn away from you but will mercifully respond to your need. In the gospels, we read “Behold, a leper came and worshiped him, saying, ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.’ Then Jesus put out his hand and touched him, saying, ‘I am willing; be cleansed.’ Immediately his leprosy was cleansed” (Matthew 8:2-3).
Find a place alone with Jesus today and say to him what the leper said, “Lord, you are able. Make me clean.” Expect that he who is no respecter of persons will touch and heal you in mind, body, soul and spirit. The arm of the Lord is outstretched to you, but he waits for that cry for help that is also a cry of expectancy. BELIEVE
