A nine-year-old girl has died after being shot in Liverpool.

A man was reported to have fired a gun in a house on Kingsheath Avenue in Dovecot at 22:00 BST on Monday.

The girl was shot in the chest and died in hospital, while a man also suffered gunshot wounds to his body and a woman was shot in the hand.

Merseyside Police has put a cordon in place as officers hunt the gunman. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the shooting was "truly shocking".

"No parent should ever have to suffer the loss of a child in these dreadful circumstances," she said.

"This crime is abhorrent and our communities must come forward and tell us who is responsible.

"This cowardly individual does not deserve to be walking the streets and I would urge those who know anything to speak to us and tell us what they know."

Police are appealing for dashcam, CCTV and mobile phone footage from anyone in the area at the time

A force spokesman said the girl's next of kin have been informed and were "being supported by specially trained family liaison officers".

He said the injured man and woman were taken to hospital after the shootings and house-to-house and forensic inquiries were being carried out.

West Derby's Labour MP Ian Byrne, whose constituency includes the street, said residents were "all struggling to process it as a community".

He said he would be asking his constituents to "help the police and give them as much information as possible".

Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson said it was an "appalling act of evil" and urged anyone with information to "come forward", adding: "Guns have no place in our communities."

A woman who lives nearby, who asked to remain anonymous, said the shooting made her worry for her own children.

"It's devastating. It can't carry on like this," she said.

Gang bosses and kingpins are thought to be fleeing to villas abroad as police crack down on organised crime following the death of little Olivia Pratt-Korbel.

Experts believe that criminals will be rushing around to export drugs and weapons out of Liverpool following a series of raids in city.

Armed police surrounded a flat in Birkdale Court, Huyton, arresting a 36-year-old man on Thursday night - before swooping on a property in Lunsford Road in nearby Dovecot to arrest a 33-year-old man, less than 24 hours later.

Both men have been released on bail pending further enquiries as cops issued another plea for people with information to come forward.

But in the meantime, Dr Simon Harding, director of the National Centre for Gang Research, told the Mail he suspected many of the city's crime bosses will be fleeing to other countries.

He said: "Right now they will be worried about having their homes raided. There will be a lot of sudden holidays to Spain and Turkey.

The devastating and tragic events that led to nine-year-old Olivia's death were made only more shocking as they unfolded on the 15th anniversary of the death of Rhys Jones.

In 2007, Liverpool mourned the 11-year-old schoolboy who was fatally caught in the crossfire of a shooting between rival gangs, as he walked home from football practice in Croxteth.

At the time, Merseyside Police faced a code of silence among criminals and residents and it was eight months before officers arrested Rhys' killer.

In September Rhys' mother, Melanie made a heartfelt and direct plea to her son's killer on Crimewatch, prompting 12 people to call in with the same name.

On April 15 2008, police confirmed that 11 people (all aged between 17 and 25) had been arrested in connection with the murder.

Six more suspects of a similar age were arrested the next day and another man was arrested in connection with the case on April 18.

Among the dozens of arrests were high-profile criminals, and the case exposed some of Liverpool's organised crime families.

Police are still hunting Olivia's killer

On Monday, a balaclava-clad gunman chased former heroin dealer, Joseph Nee, into Olivia's home firing "wildly and indiscriminately" at the innocent schoolgirl and her mother.

Mum Cheryl was shot in the wrist as she tried to shut the door on the attacker while Olivia stood behind her.

The same bullet struck the youngster in the chest and despite being rushed to nearby Alder Hey Children's Hospital, she died a short while later.

Olivia’s family has said in an emotional statement: "If anyone knows anything, now is the time to speak up. It is not about being a snitch or a grass, it is about finding out who took our baby away from us."

Residents at the scene of Olivia's killing told the Mirror that the people involved were known criminals.

Merseyside Police are continuing to investigate but no-one has yet been charged.

Despite the devastating parallels, city leaders have insisted that "Liverpool has changed" from the days of Rhys Jones' murder.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Bishop Tom Williams said: "The one thing that gets me is that people get the impression that we're a divided city, you know, there's criminals and everything else.

"It's not divided 50/50, there's a very small percentage, and it's them getting all the headlines all the time, I think, which upsets me most of all."

Detectives have discovered that the pistol had been used in two other attacks in Dovecot over a two-and-a-half-year period.

The first was in Wimbourne Close on 27 January 2020 when a 19-year-old man was shot through a front door.

The second was on 8 August - two weeks before Olivia's death in Finch Way, just a short distance from her home.

On this occasion two rival groups in cars and on motorbikes fired shots indiscriminately near some playing fields.

The force said officers had now worked for more than 15,000 hours on the investigation, trawled through thousands of hours of CCTV and investigated more than 400 pieces of intelligence passed on by the public.

Det Ch Supt Mark Kameen said: "Those involved in this abhorrent crime are poison in the community and we are continuing to robustly target them.

"These people have crossed the line in every sense by shooting an innocent nine-year-old and we all have a responsibility to put all those involved behind bars."

The detective called for people to reveal where the guns were being kept, and said evidence suggested they could still be in the Dovecot area.

"Why should we, or you, show them any loyalty at all? I want people to tell us where those guns are, now," he said.

"No-one should shoot a child and not face justice - silence is not an option for anyone."

He added the man the gunman was chasing - convicted burglar Joseph Nee - was continuing to be treated in hospital.

The new reward is the biggest single financial incentive offered in the history of Crimestoppers.

'Precious young life'

The charity reiterated that it works independently of the police and does not trace computers or phones used to contact them.

Lord Ashcroft said: "This case has been incredibly shocking, not just for those who are directly affected, but also for Liverpool and the nation as a whole.

"A precious young life has been lost so we need every effort to find those involved in this appalling killing."

Thomas Cashman is charged with the murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel has appeared in court this morning.

Thomas Cashman is alleged to have killed the nine-year-old who was shot dead after convicted burglar Joseph Nee was chased by a gunman into her home in Didcot, Liverpool, on August 22.

The 34-year-old is also charged with the attempted murder of Olivia's mother, 46-year-old Cheryl Korbel, who was injured during the incident, and Nee, 35.

The latter allegedly suffered multiple gun shot wounds and was taken to hospital by friends, while Olivia lay dying in her mum's arms.

Nee had been freed from prison on licence last year and has subsequently been sent back inside.

Cheryl was allegedly shot through the hand, with the same bullet then passing into Olivia's chest.

She and Olivia's dad John Francis watched the proceedings at court today after being escorted in by police.

The defendant, of the city's West Derby area, is further charged with two counts of possessing a firearm to endanger life.

He appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court alongside a second defendant, Paul Russell, 40, also of West Derby, who faces a single count of assisting an offender.

Russell is accused of driving for Cashman and disposing of clothes.

Cashman was arrested on Thursday (September 29). Russell was arrested on Friday (September 30).

Prior to the hearing, police motorcycles blocked the read to other traffic as a huge armed motorcade carried Cashman to court.

Olivia was hiding behind her mum when she was killed

A large gathering of officers then waited outside the court during the proceedings.

Russell appeared first and was escorted into the dock wearing a black Under Armour t-shirt, reports the Liverpool Echo.

He spoke only to confirm his name and address.

He was represented by John Rowan who informed the court there will be no application for bail.

Russell was not asked to enter a plea as the case can only be heard in the crown court.

He was represented by solicitor Thomas Keaney.

He wore a light blue T-shirt and jeans in the dock and spoke to confirm his name and address.

He sat with his head bowed.

He will now be appearing in Liverpool Crown Court this afternoon at 2pm where he will be considered for bail.

There have been 11 arrests over Olivia's death so far, with nine men previously detained as part of the wide-scale investigation, all of whom were later bailed.

A man has been found guilty of murdering nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel, who was shot dead in her home in Liverpool.

Thomas Cashman had denied being the gunman who shot Olivia and injured her mother Cheryl Korbel after chasing a man into their home on 22 August.

The 34-year-old was also found guilty of wounding Ms Korbel, the attempted murder of Joseph Nee and possession of firearms with intent to endanger life.

He will be sentenced on Monday.

Ms Korbel, wearing a pink cardigan and holding a teddy bear, sat with her children Chloe and Ryan in the court.

There were gasps and tears from Olivia's family as the verdicts were returned.

After leaving the court building, Ms Korbel said she was feeling "ecstatic".

The jury of 10 men and two women took nine hours and three minutes to reach their verdicts.

Cashman wiped away tears in the dock and turned to his family in the public gallery behind, shaking his head.

One of Cashman's relatives could be heard saying "appeal it" and they left the courtroom shouting and swearing.

During the trial at Manchester Crown Court, the jury heard 36-year-old Nee, who has a number of previous convictions, was the intended target of the attack.

Cashman had been lying in wait for the fellow drug dealer at about 22:00 BST, the jury was told.

He shot at Nee in the street and wounded him but his gun jammed as he tried to finish the job.

Nee fled for his life - heading towards the light of an open door - the home of Ms Korbel, who had heard the commotion.

But, as she tried to close the door to keep the men out, Cashman shot again.

The bullet went through the door, through her hand, and fatally hit Olivia in the chest.

Cashman then fled the scene, running across back gardens.

The court heard Nee and his family "had their enemies" and it was not the first time he had been targeted in a shooting.

Nee had been shot at on 8 August, two weeks before the shooting in which Olivia was killed.

During a previous hearing, which could not be reported until the conclusion of the trial, the court was told the shootings came after a feud between two families.

There had been a "background of hostility" between Nee's family and another family, the court heard.

The same self-loading pistol, which was used by Cashman to kill Olivia, was fired at Nee in the earlier incident on 8 August, police said.

The defence sought to elicit further material supporting a feud between the two families, including a fight in prison involving two of them and an alleged "straightener" in a pub.

There was insufficient evidence Cashman was involved in the shooting on 8 August but he had not been eliminated by police, the court heard.

Olivia's murder made national headlines. A child gunned down inside her own home, where she should have been safest.

The case is considered a real low. But it's not a new low for Liverpool.

Eerily, exactly 15 years to the very day, 11-year-old Rhys Jones was fatally shot by a stray bullet.

Olivia's murder carried the sense of history repeating itself.

Maybe that's why it provoked such a strong reaction within the local community.

Detectives say that information flowed into their incident room in a volume they haven't experienced before.

And even some of those who might have been expected to put up a wall of silence spoke out.

Criminals talked about "a line having been crossed".

During the trial, Cashman, a father-of-two, had told the court he had been at a friend's house where he counted £10,000 in cash and smoked a spliff at around the time of the shooting.

But a woman, who had a fling with Cashman, told the jury he came to her house after the shooting, where he changed his clothes and she heard him say he had "done Joey".

It can now also be reported that Paul Russell, 41, admitted driving Cashman away from a house where he fled to following Olivia's murder and disposing of his clothing.

Russell, of Snowberry Road, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to assisting an offender at a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court in October and will be sentenced on Monday.

But the media was prevented from reporting his plea until the conclusion of Cashman's trial.

Det Supt Mark Baker, the senior investigating officer in the case, said Cashman's actions were "abhorrent".

He said: "When he found out that he had shot an innocent young girl, he should have had the courage to stand up and come forward.

"Instead, he chose to lie low despite the fact that he was a dad himself.

"He is not worthy of walking the streets of Merseyside, and neither are those who think they can bring fear or intimidation to our communities through the use of firearms."

He said officers were still "hunting down" those who enabled Olivia's murder and finding the weapons, which had not yet been recovered, was key.

Ms Korbel told the court life was "so very quiet" without her daughter, adding: "I just can't cope with the silence."

The man who murdered nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel has been jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 42 years in prison.

Thomas Cashman, 34, refused to go into the dock for the sentencing and none of his family were present in court.

He fatally shot Olivia and injured her mother Cheryl Korbel as he chased a fellow drug dealer into their Liverpool home on the evening of 22 August 2022.

The judge said his failure to appear was "disrespectful" to Olivia's family.

John Cooper KC, defending, said Cashman had not attended the hearing as he claimed the Crown Prosecution Service were singing "we are the champions" following his conviction.

He said Cashman was concerned proceedings were "turning into a circus".

Sentencing him in absentia at Manchester Crown Court, Mrs Justice Amanda Yip said drug dealer Cashman was "not of previous good character", had made it clear he was a criminal and had "demonstrated no remorse".

"His failure to come into court is further evidence of that," she said.

She said Cashman "relentlessly pursued" Joseph Nee into Olivia's home, where the schoolgirl had left her bed after hearing the commotion.

"She came downstairs to seek the comfort of her mother," she said.

"Her last words were 'Mum, I'm scared'.

"In a terrible twist of fate, she had stepped directly into the line of fire."

The judge said she had considered handing down a whole-life order, meaning Cashman would never be released from prison, but had decided it was not merited because the planning and premeditation in his attack was not directed at Olivia.

She also praised the bravery of a woman who gave evidence against Cashman, who was granted lifetime anonymity.

Earlier in the hearing, Ms Korbel was in tears as she clutched a teddy bear made from her daughter's pyjamas while giving her victim impact statement in the witness box.

"I cannot get my head around how Cashman continued to shoot after hearing the terrified screams and utter devastation he had caused," she said.

"He doesn't care.

"His actions have left the biggest hole in our lives."

Olivia Pratt-Korbel's mother: "Justice has prevailed and I cannot begin to express our relief"

She said she spent every afternoon thinking about the end of the school day and her "sassy, chatty girl who everyone adored" adding: "My mind keeps telling me that I've forgotten to pick her up from school."

She added that Olivia's grandmother had died on Sunday night, but had thankfully "lived long enough to see that coward found guilty".

Olivia's father John Pratt told the court he was "heartbroken" and had "nightmares about how she died [that] won't go away".

Speaking directly to the absent Cashman, he said: "You have denied my beautiful girl Olivia her future.

"I will never see her on her wedding day, and walk her down the aisle... and see her grow into the beautiful woman she was destined to become.

"We have been robbed of her future. Because of you, she will be forever nine."

Olivia Pratt-Korbel's killer could be targeted over fears he will hand over information on unsolved murders

The killer of Olivia Pratt-Korbel has had a £250,000 bounty placed on his head by gangland criminals to silence him in prison, it has been reported.

Thomas Cashman, who will be sentenced for killing the nine-year-old girl in Liverpool on Monday, has been made the target of a hit over fears he could cooperate with police following his murder conviction, according to The Sun.

The newspaper reported Cashman, 34, could be willing to hand over information on unsolved murders in exchange for better conditions during his sentence.

The bounty has been reportedly sent to criminals and prisoners via Telegram. "He knows everything about everyone. The figure is £250,000 to kill him," a source told The Sun.

"His knowledge and testimony could cause a world of pain for some very big criminals who do not want their activities being looked at."

Cashman, who has reportedly been linked to two further unsolved murders in Merseyside, will be sentenced for Olivia's murder on Monday at Manchester Crown Court.

It has since emerged the 34-year-old is suspected of being connected to the killing of Nicky Ayers, shot in 2010, and Karl Bradley, who was found dead in a back garden in 2013, just a few minutes’ walk from Olivia’s home.

Mr Ayers, 46, was shot dead on South Cantril Avenue, West Derby, on April 29 2010.

Three years later on the morning of March 22 2013, Mr Bradley's body was found in the back garden of a house on Penshaw Close, West Derby.

Police believe Mr Bradley, 31, was shot dead on the night of March 21.

Both murders have been subject to regular appeals for information from Merseyside Police although the investigations remain unsolved.

A local source claimed that Cashman had previously travelled abroad to Spain after committing serious crimes.

When asked whether Cashman would be investigated as being involved in either of the deaths, Merseyside Police said it “would not be appropriate” to comment on unsolved murders.

A spokesman added: “However, Merseyside Police’s Serious Case Review Unit regularly review unsolved homicides to identify new information or opportunities that may assist the investigation in identifying those responsible.”

Cashman, 34, was found guilty following an 18 day trial of the murder of Olivia, the attempted murder of his intended target Joseph Nee, and the wounding with intent of Cheryl Korbel.

He was also found guilty of two counts of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

The 34-year-old is also charged with the attempted murder of Olivia's mother, 46-year-old Cheryl Korbel, who was injured during the incident, and Nee, 35. The latter allegedly suffered multiple gun shot wounds and was taken to hospital by friends, while Olivia lay dying in her mum's arms. Nee had been freed from prison on licence last year and has subsequently been sent back inside. Cheryl was allegedly shot through the hand, with the same bullet then passing into Olivia's chest. She and Olivia's dad John Francis watched the proceedings at court today after being escorted in by police. The defendant, of the city's West Derby area, is further charged with two counts of possessing a firearm to endanger life. He appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court alongside a second defendant, Paul Russell, 40, also of West Derby, who faces a single count of assisting an offender. Russell is accused of driving for Cashman and disposing of clothes. Cashman was arrested on Thursday (September 29). Russell was arrested on Friday (September 30). Prior to the hearing, police motorcycles blocked the read to other traffic as a huge armed motorcade carried Cashman to court. Olivia was hiding behind her mum when she was killed A large gathering of officers then waited outside the court during the proceedings. Russell appeared first and was escorted into the dock wearing a black Under Armour t-shirt, reports the Liverpool Echo. He spoke only to confirm his name and address. He wore a light blue T-shirt and jeans in the dock and spoke to confirm his name and address. He sat with his head bowed. Ms Korbel, wearing a pink cardigan and holding a teddy bear, sat with her children Chloe and Ryan in the court. There were gasps and tears from Olivia's family as the verdicts were returned. After leaving the court building, Ms Korbel said she was feeling "ecstatic". The jury of 10 men and two women took nine hours and three minutes to reach their verdicts. Cashman wiped away tears in the dock and turned to his family in the public gallery behind, shaking his head. One of Cashman's relatives could be heard saying "appeal it" and they left the courtroom shouting and swearing. During the trial at Manchester Crown Court, the jury heard 36-year-old Nee, who has a number of previous convictions, was the intended target of the attack. Thomas Cashman was convicted following a trial, which lasted more than three weeks Cashman had been lying in wait for the fellow drug dealer at about 22:00 BST, the jury was told. He shot at Nee in the street and wounded him but his gun jammed as he tried to finish the job. Nee fled for his life - heading towards the light of an open door - the home of Ms Korbel, who had heard the commotion. But, as she tried to close the door to keep the men out, Cashman shot again. The bullet went through the door, through her hand, and fatally hit Olivia in the chest. Police release footage of the arrest of Thomas Cashman Cashman then fled the scene, running across back gardens. The court heard Nee and his family "had their enemies" and it was not the first time he had been targeted in a shooting. Nee had been shot at on 8 August, two weeks before the shooting in which Olivia was killed. During a previous hearing, which could not be reported until the conclusion of the trial, the court was told the shootings came after a feud between two families. There had been a "background of hostility" between Nee's family and another family, the court heard. The same self-loading pistol, which was used by Cashman to kill Olivia, was fired at Nee in the earlier incident on 8 August, police said. The defence sought to elicit further material supporting a feud between the two families, including a fight in prison involving two of them and an alleged "straightener" in a pub. There was insufficient evidence Cashman was involved in the shooting on 8 August but he had not been eliminated by police, the court heard. Olivia's murder made national headlines. A child gunned down inside her own home, where she should have been safest. The case is considered a real low. But it's not a new low for Liverpool. Eerily, exactly 15 years to the very day, 11-year-old Rhys Jones was fatally shot by a stray bullet. Olivia's murder carried the sense of history repeating itself. Maybe that's why it provoked such a strong reaction within the local community. Detectives say that information flowed into their incident room in a volume they haven't experienced before. And even some of those who might have been expected to put up a wall of silence spoke out. Criminals talked about "a line having been crossed". During the trial, Cashman, a father-of-two, had told the court he had been at a friend's house where he counted £10,000 in cash and smoked a spliff at around the time of the shooting. But a woman, who had a fling with Cashman, told the jury he came to her house after the shooting, where he changed his clothes and she heard him say he had "done Joey". It can now also be reported that Paul Russell, 41, admitted driving Cashman away from a house where he fled to following Olivia's murder and disposing of his clothing. Russell, of Snowberry Road, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to assisting an offender at a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court in October and will be sentenced on Monday. But the media was prevented from reporting his plea until the conclusion of Cashman's trial. Det Supt Mark Baker, the senior investigating officer in the case, said Cashman's actions were "abhorrent". He said: "When he found out that he had shot an innocent young girl, he should have had the courage to stand up and come forward. "Instead, he chose to lie low despite the fact that he was a dad himself. "He is not worthy of walking the streets of Merseyside, and neither are those who think they can bring fear or intimidation to our communities through the use of firearms." Thomas Cashman, who will be sentenced for killing the nine-year-old girl in Liverpool on Monday, has been made the target of a hit over fears he could cooperate with police following his murder conviction, according to The Sun. The newspaper reported Cashman, 34, could be willing to hand over information on unsolved murders in exchange for better conditions during his sentence. The bounty has been reportedly sent to criminals and prisoners via Telegram. "He knows everything about everyone. The figure is £250,000 to kill him," a source told The Sun. "His knowledge and testimony could cause a world of pain for some very big criminals who do not want their activities being looked at." Cashman, who has reportedly been linked to two further unsolved murders in Merseyside, will be sentenced for Olivia's murder on Monday at Manchester Crown Court. It has since emerged the 34-year-old is suspected of being connected to the killing of Nicky Ayers, shot in 2010, and Karl Bradley, who was found dead in a back garden in 2013, just a few minutes’ walk from Olivia’s home. A local source claimed that Cashman had previously travelled abroad to Spain after committing serious crimes.
