Liverpool Shooting: Girl 9, Shot Dead & Two Injured

Girl, 9, shot dead named as police outline shocking chain of events

BBC News 24 AUG 2022.

Merseyside Police has put a large cordon in place as officers hunt the man responsible for the shooting

A nine-year-old girl has died after being shot in Liverpool.

A man was reported to have fired a gun in a house on Kingsheath Avenue in Dovecot at 22:00 BST on Monday.

The girl was shot in the chest and died in hospital, while a man also suffered gunshot wounds to his body and a woman was shot in the hand.

Merseyside Police has put a cordon in place as officers hunt the gunman. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the shooting was "truly shocking".

"No parent should ever have to suffer the loss of a child in these dreadful circumstances," she said.

"This crime is abhorrent and our communities must come forward and tell us who is responsible.

"This cowardly individual does not deserve to be walking the streets and I would urge those who know anything to speak to us and tell us what they know."

Police are appealing for dashcam, CCTV and mobile phone footage from anyone in the area at the time

A force spokesman said the girl's next of kin have been informed and were "being supported by specially trained family liaison officers".

He said the injured man and woman were taken to hospital after the shootings and house-to-house and forensic inquiries were being carried out.

West Derby's Labour MP Ian Byrne, whose constituency includes the street, said residents were "all struggling to process it as a community".

He said he would be asking his constituents to "help the police and give them as much information as possible".

Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson said it was an "appalling act of evil" and urged anyone with information to "come forward", adding: "Guns have no place in our communities."

A woman who lives nearby, who asked to remain anonymous, said the shooting made her worry for her own children.

"It's devastating. It can't carry on like this," she said.

Gangsters Flee Abroad as Cops Raid Homes in Hunt For Olivia Pratt-Korbel Killer

Dr Simon Harding, director of the National Centre for Gang Research suspects "there will be a lot of sudden holidays to Spain and Turkey" as gangsters flee Liverpool

---Deadly guns can be rented for £200-a-night in Liverpool as city battles violence surge

Daily Mirror UK 29 AUG 2022

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy from Merseyside Police speaks to the media at force headquarters in Rose Hill after Olivia's death

Police have been carrying out raids across the city
Gang bosses and kingpins are thought to be fleeing to villas abroad as police crack down on organised crime following the death of little Olivia Pratt-Korbel.

Experts believe that criminals will be rushing around to export drugs and weapons out of Liverpool following a series of raids in city.

Armed police surrounded a flat in Birkdale Court, Huyton, arresting a 36-year-old man on Thursday night - before swooping on a property in Lunsford Road in nearby Dovecot to arrest a 33-year-old man, less than 24 hours later.

Both men have been released on bail pending further enquiries as cops issued another plea for people with information to come forward.

But in the meantime, Dr Simon Harding, director of the National Centre for Gang Research, told the Mail he suspected many of the city's crime bosses will be fleeing to other countries.

He said: "Right now they will be worried about having their homes raided. There will be a lot of sudden holidays to Spain and Turkey.

The devastating and tragic events that led to nine-year-old Olivia's death were made only more shocking as they unfolded on the 15th anniversary of the death of Rhys Jones.

In 2007, Liverpool mourned the 11-year-old schoolboy who was fatally caught in the crossfire of a shooting between rival gangs, as he walked home from football practice in Croxteth.

At the time, Merseyside Police faced a code of silence among criminals and residents and it was eight months before officers arrested Rhys' killer.

Olivia Pratt-Korbel, nine

Rhys Jones, 11, died in 2007

In September Rhys' mother, Melanie made a heartfelt and direct plea to her son's killer on Crimewatch, prompting 12 people to call in with the same name.

On April 15 2008, police confirmed that 11 people (all aged between 17 and 25) had been arrested in connection with the murder.

Six more suspects of a similar age were arrested the next day and another man was arrested in connection with the case on April 18.

Among the dozens of arrests were high-profile criminals, and the case exposed some of Liverpool's organised crime families.

Police are still hunting Olivia's killer

On Monday, a balaclava-clad gunman chased former heroin dealer, Joseph Nee, into Olivia's home firing "wildly and indiscriminately" at the innocent schoolgirl and her mother.

Mum Cheryl was shot in the wrist as she tried to shut the door on the attacker while Olivia stood behind her.

The same bullet struck the youngster in the chest and despite being rushed to nearby Alder Hey Children's Hospital, she died a short while later.

Olivia’s family has said in an emotional statement: "If anyone knows anything, now is the time to speak up. It is not about being a snitch or a grass, it is about finding out who took our baby away from us."

Residents at the scene of Olivia's killing told the Mirror that the people involved were known criminals.

Merseyside Police are continuing to investigate but no-one has yet been charged.

Despite the devastating parallels, city leaders have insisted that "Liverpool has changed" from the days of Rhys Jones' murder.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Bishop Tom Williams said: "The one thing that gets me is that people get the impression that we're a divided city, you know, there's criminals and everything else.

"It's not divided 50/50, there's a very small percentage, and it's them getting all the headlines all the time, I think, which upsets me most of all."

Update re: Olivia Murderer REVEALED as He Appears in Court For First Time

Olivia Pratt-Korbel: Arrests Over Nine-Year-Old's Murder

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder over the killing of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel.

Two other men, aged 29 and 41, have been detained on suspicion of assisting an offender.

BBC 5 SEP 2022.

Olivia died after being shot by a gunman chasing a man into her home

The 34-year-old from Liverpool is being questioned by detectives from Merseyside Police.

Olivia was shot when a gunman chased another man into her home in Dovecot, Liverpool, on 22 August.

The man arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder was detained in Runcorn in the early hours of Sunday and is being held in custody, police said.

The 41-year-old, from Knowsley, Merseyside, was also arrested in Runcorn.

Police said the 29-year-old man was arrested later after officers executed warrants at two addresses in the "Liverpool area".

Det Ch Supt Mark Kameen, who is leading the investigation, said: "We still need the public's help in ensuring that we can a build a strong evidential picture so justice is served for Olivia and her family.

"I appeal for those who may have information - no matter how small - that could continue to help our inquiries, to contact us directly or anonymously and we will do the rest."

Forensic officers search the ground for evidence

Investigators found the remains of several bullet casings in the garden

Olivia was shot in the chest by a gunman who had chased convicted burglar Joseph Nee into her home.

Neither of the men who entered the home had any links to her family.

Her mother Cheryl was shot in the wrist as she tried to shut the door on the attacker but he fired two more shots at the man he had pursued, Merseyside Police said.

Saturday's Merseyside derby featured a tribute to Olivia and a police appeal

A crowdfunding page set up to support Olivia's family has raised more than £40,000.

On Tuesday, the opening of the inquest into Olivia's death heard how an armed police officer had tried to save her life, pressing his hand on her wound as she was taken to hospital in the back of a police car.

Merseyside Police had previously arrested two men on suspicion of murder and two counts of attempted murder but released them on bail a week ago.

One of the men, aged 36, had been recalled to prison after breaching the terms of his licence.

Saturday's Merseyside derby featured a tribute to Olivia and a police appeal

On Saturday, a minute's applause was held in tribute to Olivia during the ninth minute of the Premier League match between Everton and Liverpool.

The Merseyside derby also featured a police appeal for information and an anti-knife and gun crime banner was unfurled, stretching across supporters from both clubs.

Olivia was one of four people fatally shot or stabbed within one week in the region.

Her funeral is due to take place at St Margaret Mary's Church in Dovecot on 15 September and her family has asked mourners to wear a "splash of pink" for the service.

Olivia Pratt-Korbel: Record £200k Reward in Hunt For Girls' Killer

A record reward of up to £200,000 has been offered in the search for the gunman who killed Olivia Pratt-Korbel.

BBC News 2Q SEP 2022.

Olivia Pratt-Korbel was shot after a gunman chased another man into her home in Liverpool

Olivia's funeral was held on Thursday

The nine-year-old was shot during a struggle when two men burst into her home in Liverpool on 22 August.

The reward has increased after Crimestoppers founder Lord Ashcroft doubled an initial pledge of £50,000 to match £100,000 put forward by a private donor.

It will be paid for information leading to the conviction of Olivia's killer.

The new amount was announced as police revealed details of the gun used in the shooting, and vowed to catch "this toxic individual who robbed Olivia of her future".

Nine people have so far been arrested but no charges have been brought.

Olivia's mother Cheryl Korbel was shot in the wrist as she tried to shut the door on the gunman, who was chasing and firing at another man.

He continued shooting and hit the schoolgirl with a fatal shot to her chest. Neither of the men were known to the family, in the Dovecot area.

Det Ch Supt Mark Kameen: "I am determined to take these weapons off the streets"

Merseyside Police said it had identified two weapons used by the killer, with a .38 revolver responsible for the fatal shot.

A Glock-type self-loading 9mm pistol was also used by the gunman the same night.

Police released an image of a Glock pistol similar to one of two weapons used on the night of the killing

Detectives have discovered that the pistol had been used in two other attacks in Dovecot over a two-and-a-half-year period.

The first was in Wimbourne Close on 27 January 2020 when a 19-year-old man was shot through a front door.

The second was on 8 August - two weeks before Olivia's death in Finch Way, just a short distance from her home.

On this occasion two rival groups in cars and on motorbikes fired shots indiscriminately near some playing fields.

The force said officers had now worked for more than 15,000 hours on the investigation, trawled through thousands of hours of CCTV and investigated more than 400 pieces of intelligence passed on by the public.

Det Ch Supt Mark Kameen said: "Those involved in this abhorrent crime are poison in the community and we are continuing to robustly target them.

"These people have crossed the line in every sense by shooting an innocent nine-year-old and we all have a responsibility to put all those involved behind bars."

The detective called for people to reveal where the guns were being kept, and said evidence suggested they could still be in the Dovecot area.

"Why should we, or you, show them any loyalty at all? I want people to tell us where those guns are, now," he said.

"No-one should shoot a child and not face justice - silence is not an option for anyone."

He added the man the gunman was chasing - convicted burglar Joseph Nee - was continuing to be treated in hospital.

The new reward is the biggest single financial incentive offered in the history of Crimestoppers.

'Precious young life'

The charity reiterated that it works independently of the police and does not trace computers or phones used to contact them.

Lord Ashcroft said: "This case has been incredibly shocking, not just for those who are directly affected, but also for Liverpool and the nation as a whole.

"A precious young life has been lost so we need every effort to find those involved in this appalling killing."

Olivia's funeral was held on Thursday at a packed St Margaret Mary's Church, just streets away from where the shooting happened.

Speaking in her eulogy, her mother said her daughter "touched so many people's hearts and was loved and adored by everyone
".

Assistant Chief Constable Chris Green, of Merseyside Police, said his team had worked "relentlessly" in what has been "a complex inquiry, supported by Olivia's mum and dad and the wider Merseyside community".

Det Ch Supt Mark Kameen said it was still "very much a live investigation".

He said: "At the beginning of the investigation we were firm in our commitment to finding all of those involved in this case, which includes the people who have tried to shield and protect individuals, and those who have supplied the weapon or are hiding the weapons used in this incident.

"We have had an overwhelming response and support from the public since the tragic murder of Olivia and I would ask for your continued support so we can keep the promise we made to Olivia's family and the local community to ensure that those involved face justice.

"Our thoughts today are with Olivia's mum and dad, Cheryl and John Francis, and their families, who throughout the last few weeks have shown incredible strength, courage, and dignity."

Olivia's mother Cheryl Korbel said the nine-year-old "will never be forgotten"

Olivia's funeral was held on 15 September at a packed St Margaret Mary's Church, just streets away from where the shooting happened.

Pink ties, jackets, scarves and bows were worn by those attending the service after her family asked people to wear a "splash of pink".

Speaking in her eulogy, her mother said her daughter had "touched so many people's hearts and was loved and adored by everyone".

"I will never say goodbye but what I will say is goodnight, love you, see you in the morning."

The police force has appealed for anyone with CCTV, dashcam or smart doorbell footage, which might help the investigation, to come forward.
