A little girl, 6, was found "dead in a dog cage with tape covering her mouth and nose", her sister told police.

The sister of tragic Isabella Kalua, six, told a Honolulu police detective the chilling story on November 5 - almost two months after the youngster went missing.

Her adoptive parents Isaac, 52, and his wife Lehua Kalua, 43, were arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder on Wednesday, reports say.

During a police interview, Isaac denied being involved in his adopted daughter's disappearance.

The chilling sights described by the sister, who's only identified by her initials, is thought to have happened two months before she spoke to police.

She recalled seeing Isabella inside a dog cage late at night.

Her mouth was covered with duct tape and she wasn't breathing at the time, she told the detective.

The sister then recalls seeing mum Lehua take Isabella from the cage and put her in a bathtub filled with water in an attempt to rouse her, The Sun reports.

But tragically "it did not work", the sister said.

The sister said she knew Isabella was dead, but that she was unaware of the whereabouts of her body.

The six-year-old's body is yet to be found.

But detectives have said they believe Isabella was killed in August, around a month before she was reported missing.

The Kaluas were arrested by armed police who stormed the home where they live with their other children, WAGMTV reports.

Homicide Lt. Deena Thoemmes said police believed some of the information which the couple gave was "false" and added: "There were some things that weren't adding up for us."
