At least two people have been killed in a 'well prepared' terror attack in Vienna on Monday evening.

Police have confirmed that there were six different shooting locations in Austria's capital, which started at synagogue in the centre of Vienna at around 8pm local time.

There are unconfirmed reports that up to seven people have been killed, but police have said that there are "several suspects armed with rifles".

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer confirmed in a news conference that several people had been killed, along with one attacker.

Several suspected perpetrators of the 'hideous' terror attack are on the run and a manhunt is under way.

Parents have been told they don't have to take their kids to school on Tuesday. A large area has been cordoned off as police search for the other gunmen.

Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz has described the shootings as a "repulsive terrorist attack".

He tweeted: "We are currently going through difficult times in our republic. I would like to thank all the emergency services who risk their lives, especially today for our safety.

"Our police will take decisive action against the perpetrators of this repulsive terrorist attack.

"I am glad that our police officers have already been able to eliminate a perpetrator. We will never allow ourselves to be intimidated by terrorism and will fight these attacks resolutely by all means."

Austria's Interior minister Karl Nehammer told TV channel ORF that the shooting is believed to be a terror attack.

"At the moment I can confirm we believe this is an apparent terror attack," he said.

"We believe there are several perpetrators. Unfortunately there are also several injured, probably also dead."

Mr Nehammer said he cannot rule out that one attacker was wearing an explosive belt. All six shooting locations are in the immediate vicinity of street housing central synagogue, he added.

One suspect and a bystander have been shot dead, according to news agency APA.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was "deeply shocked" by tonight's attacks.

He tweeted: "I am deeply shocked by the terrible attacks in Vienna tonight. The UK’s thoughts are with the people of Austria - we stand united with you against terror."

Vienna Police on Twitter confirmed there is a "large police operation" going on in the area, and there are "persons injured," including a police officer.

They have told people to stay indoors, with several gunmen seen on the streets this evening.

In a series of tweets, Polizei Wien said: "There is a larger police operation going on in the 1st district of Vienna (Inner City area). Officers are on site and check the Situation. We keep you posted on the matter.

The attack was reportedly on the street that houses the city's main synagogue in the area of a nearby square, Schwedenplatz.

The head of Austria's Jewish community, Oskar Deutsch, said on Twitter they are not clear whether the synagogue or adjourning officers were targets of the shots fired.

He tweeted: "It cannot be said at the moment whether the city temple was one of the goals. What is certain, however, is that both the synagogue in Seitenstettengasse and the office building at the same address were no longer in operation and closed at the time of the first shots.

"In any case, there was shooting in the immediate vicinity of the city temple. All parishioners were asked not to enter public streets and to remain in closed rooms until the all-clear from the security authorities, who worked with the IKG security department be in close contact. Please do not spread unsecured information or rumors, stay indoors and follow police instructions."

"The rescue workers are also still on duty. Please stay at home and keep calm. If you are in the inner city area, stay indoors."

President of France Emmanuel Macron tweeted of his "shock and sadness" at tonight's attack.

"We share the shock and sadness of the Austrians after an attack in Vienna. After France, it is a friendly country that is under attack.

"This is our Europe. Our enemies need to know who they are dealing with. We won't give in to anything."

European Council president Charles Michel has condemned tonight's attack.

He tweeted: "Europe strongly condemns this cowardly act that violates life and our human values. My thoughts are with the victims and the people of #Vienna in the wake of tonight’s horrific attack. We stand with Austria."
