Thug Protester Hurled a Bike at Police Horse, Which Then Bolted Down Whitehall and Slammed its Rider into a Traffic Light Before The Animal Collided With Another Woman Demonstrator

  • A police horse injured one woman as protestors clashed with police on Saturday
  • The Black Lives Matters protests saw thousands of people take to London streets
  • Demonstrators clashed with police in the city centre with bicycles being thrown
  • One officer was unseated from her horse, which then ran into crowds of civilians
Daily Mail UK, 7 JUN 2020

Distressing video tonight has captured the moment a terrified police horse bolted through Westminster and slammed its rider into a traffic light amid chaotic scenes at the Black Lives Matter protest.

Footage shows the demonstration in central London turning violent as protestors begin to launch projectiles at police officers as hours of peaceful rallies draw to a close.

Amid the increasingly tense backdrop, a masked protestor can be seen deliberately hurtling a Boris bike straight in to the path of a group of police horses.

The bike appears to hit one of the horses, causing it to panic and bolt straight down Whitehall.

Horrified demonstrators scatter to avoid the runaway horse, which then slams its police rider into a traffic light, causing her to fall to the floor. Other mounted officers then rush to the scene.

The horse turns around, and knocks a pedestrian to the ground before galloping off to escape the crowded area.

The Met Police have confirmed the officer is now in hospital recovering from her injuries, while her horse made it back to its stables nearby on its own.

Protestors congregated in Parliament Square and Downing Street before moving across the other locations in the Capital including Battersea and Victoria.

The scenes on Saturday are the latest in a string of protests to have taken place throughout the week in London.

Demonstrators also congregated in Parliament Square, whilst holding signs and kneeling down on one knee

The demonstrations occurred despite please from Government ministers, including Home Secretary Priti Patel and Health Secretary Matt Han****, to not break lockdown regulations and attend the protests.

Some protestors were seen wearing face masks and other means of protective equipment.

Elsewhere in London, popular boxer Anthony Joshua attended a Black Lives Matter demonstration in his hometown of Watford.

The heavyweight boxing champion made a passionate speech calling for the need to 'speak out in peaceful demonstrations' and not to protest with 'selfish motives and turning it into rioting and looting'.

There have also been protests in major UK cities such as Manchester, Cardiff, Sheffield and Newcastle.

Update re: UK Police Officer Shot Dead in Station by Man in Custody

Policewoman Thrown From Horse at Protest Suffers Collapsed Lung and Shattered Ribs

The Met Police officer collided with a traffic light and fell from her horse, causing her to be knocked to the ground during a Black Lives Matter protest in central London on Saturday

Daily Mirror UK, 8 JUN 2020

She was taken to hospital for treatment, and according to the Daily Mail, she suffered a broken collar bone, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

The publication understands she is likely to be off duty for around four months.

Met Police say she remains in hospital in a stable condition, and that the horse was uninjured and made its way back to the nearby stables.

Mr Marsh said the officer has "quite nasty" injuries.

He told BBC Breakfast: "She's stable - she has some quite nasty injuries which she sustained. And the horse is fine."

"The officer injured after falling off her horse at London Black Lives Matter protest suffered a broken collar bone, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

"She fell after flares and bikes thrown towards her spooked her horse. Wishing her a full and speedy recovery.

"The officer who was just doing her duty maintaining order on what was supposed to be a peaceful protest is seriously injured...

"Anyone who laughs at that is sick and should be ashamed."

The force confirmed 14 police officers were injured during yesterday's protests, with one other seriously injured.

Superintendent Jo Edwards said: “Officers come to work every day to protect the public, and over the past week have worked hard to manage peaceful protest.

"Yesterday, they showed extreme resilience throughout a difficult day. They are trained to make dynamic decisions in incredibly complex environments, and I am proud of their bravery and professionalism.

"There are bottles and other objects being thrown at the mounted officers.

"In Downing Street, the other police officers who were guarding the gates in front of Downing Street have gone into full riot kit and have brought their riot shields out as well."

Arrests of some thugs have been made.

It comes after a largely peaceful demonstration which started earlier on Saturday afternoon.

'We are Not Society's Punchbags': Met Police Federation Boss Condemns 'Sickening' Attack on PC Who was Filmed Being Kicked While Passersby Posed for Selfies as He Warns 'Dangers' Facing Police are 'Escalating'
  • Officers were responding to an assault in Hackney, east London, when they were assaulted yesterday
  • Both officers, a man and a woman, suffered minor injuries, with one of the officers being punched in the head
  • Two men, aged 20 and 38, were arrested on suspicion of assaulting an officer and remain in police custody
  • Home Secretary Priti Patel last night condemned the attack as 'sickening, shocking & disgraceful' in a tweet
  • Ken Marsh, who represents frontline officers, warned danger to his colleagues appears to be on the rise
Daily Mail UK, 12 JUN 2020

Mob rule: The male officer, kneeling, keeps his hands on his prisoner as passersby attack him and his female colleague, facing the camera second-left.

The police 'are not society's punchbags', a boss representing frontline officers has said, after one of his colleagues was attacked as he tried to tackle a suspect, while laughing passersby posed for selfies without coming to his aid.

Ken Marsh, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, warned attacks on officers seem to be increasing as footage emerged of the shocking scenes, which unfolded yesterday on a London street and were filmed from a nearby car before appearing online.

They show a uniformed PC tackling a man to the ground in Hackney, northeast London, before other men aim punches and kicks at the officer and a man appears brandishing a baseball bat.

As a crowd gathers, rather than coming to the PC's aid, people instead pose for mobile phone selfies with the officer grappling in the background, and jostle with his female colleague.

Two men, aged 20 and 38, were arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer following the incident, which left both officers with minor injuries but not needing hospital treatment.

Home Secretary Priti Patel led the condemnation, describing the attack as 'sickening, shocking, disgraceful', while Mr Marsh said: 'We are not society's punchbags. We have families we want to go home to at the end of every shift. But the dangers are stark. And seemingly escalating.'

Meanwhile, the national chair of the Police Federation, John Apter, described the scenes as 'stomach-churning' and said: 'How dare people stand by and video my colleagues in distress?'

Metropolitan Police Federation chair Ken Marsh, pictured left, said: 'We are not society's punchbags,' as national chair John Apter, pictured top, added: 'How dare people stand by and video my colleagues in distress?'

In a firm statement on Twitter this morning, pictured, the Metropolitan Police said: 'Officers should be able to go about their work, protecting the public, without fear of abuse or attack...being assaulted is not 'part of the job''

Home Secretary Priti Patel wrote another message today in response to the attack in which she said: 'Perpetrators should be in no doubt that they will face the full force of the law'

The Metropolitan Police also issued a firm statement on Twitter this morning, which read: 'Yesterday, two officers from @MPSHackney were attacked whilst assisting someone in need of help.
'Officers should be able to go about their work, protecting the public, without fear of abuse or attack. Two men have been arrested.

'Being assaulted is not 'part of the job'.'

The suspect the policeman was tackling had been pointed out to police by members of the public following reports of an assault, the Met said last night and arrests were later made.

Taking to Twitter after seeing the footage, Ms Patel branded it 'sickening, shocking and disgraceful'. 'My thoughts are with the outstanding officers who were subject to this disgusting violent attack,' she said.

In another message, referencing the Met's tweet, she added: 'All assaults on our brave police are completely unacceptable.

'Perpetrators should be in no doubt that they will face the full force of the law. Actions have consequences.'

Hackney's own borough commander, Marcus Barnett, said: 'This is truly despicable & society should never accept such behaviour - we are here to protect you! The officers are safe, but clearly shaken & incredibly brave too. Arrests will be made... this must stop.'

And London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: 'I utterly condemn the disgraceful attack on two Metropolitan Police officers.

'These brave officers were doing their duty and assisting the public.

We owe them a debt of gratitude and I wish them a full and speedy recovery.

'Attacks on our police will not be tolerated. I urge anyone with information to come forward to ensure the perpetrators of this disgusting attack feel the full force of the law.'

A man in a Puma top runs slowly to the scene but rather than helping the officer he gets his mobile phone out and starts filming

One man charged toward the altercation in Hackney, east London, carrying a baseball bat, although he later appeared to be acting as a peacemaker. Moments later the officer was punched in the back of the head

As the melee develops, left, the bystanders jostle with a female officer who tried to protect her colleague, while others aimed kicks and punches at the male officer on the ground

As the officer gets to his knees, one of the crowd appears to place him in a headlock, while a second officer at the scene tries to intervene

The two officers were flagged down at 3.30pm yesterday afternoon by a member of the public who reported an assault. The victim pointed out their attacker and officers went to speak to those involved, the Met said.

A force spokesman said: 'As an officer attempted to speak with those involved, one of the men resisted and a struggle ensued. A number of other people became involved whilst the officer was on the ground.'

Footage shared online shows a uniformed officer with his arm around a suspect's neck.

He appears to try and throw the suspect to the ground, but instead they both end up on their backs.

As the officer calls for backup, the man he was trying to detain repeatedly shouts 'Leave me the f*** alone,' while holding one of the officer's wrists.

Four people, two on bikes, quickly crowd around the altercation.

Two more men arrive, one carrying a baseball bat.

Seconds later, a punch appears to land on the back of the officer's head, who is still on the floor.

As one member of the crowd leans over to shout at the officer, his colleague arrives at the scene and screams at the crowd to 'get back'.

When she attempts to push the crowd away, they grab at her arms and begin to shout at her.

One of the crowd then dances in front of the altercation, while appearing to take a selfie.

In a separate video, members of the crowd are seen kicking at the female officer's legs as she tries to break apart her colleague from the suspect.

Superintendent Martin Rolston, from the Central East Command Unit, said: 'This incident, which was captured on someone's mobile phone is truly shocking.

'My officers went to the assistance of a member of the public – who asked for their help – after stating that they had been assaulted. What happened next is a reminder of the risks our officers take whilst going about their duties.

'It is fortunate that their injuries are not more serious. There is no place for this level of violence on our streets.

'We are engaging with our community partners to discuss what happened and I hope that anyone who witnessed what happened comes forward and speaks with us.'

John Apter, chairman of the Police Federation, slammed the 'horrific, stomach-churning scenes'.

'Disgusting behaviour from those who attack the officers, those who film what's going on and those who do nothing. They are cowards, the lot of them,' he said.

In an interview on BBC Radio Four's Today programme, he said there had been a 27 per cent increase in officers being injured in assaults over the last 12 months, while there were more than 30,000 attacks on officers in England and Wales alone in 2018/19 - equivalent to 85 every single day.

He added: 'I've got mixed feelings on things being videoed, because on one hand, how dare people stand by and video my colleagues in distress?

'Far too many stand back rather than assist anybody in trouble. I accept we have to manage our own risks but when people are in trouble, as a citizen you should step forward.

'It's almost like a hobby now for some to video an attack on a police officer and put it on social media - not to assist an investigation but to mock my colleagues and to almost encourage violence against them.

'Our colleagues need to be given the equipment and support to be able to defend themselves and other members of the public and sometimes we worry too much about what things look like on our television screens rather than the safety of my colleagues.'

Mayor of Hackney Phillip Glanville told followers: 'Anyone seeing these videos tonight will be as shocked & horrified as I am by this attack on two Hackney police officers. My thoughts are with both officers & praise their bravery when faced with this situation. Our police are here to protect us & scenes like this are unacceptable.'

Croydon UK Shooting: Suspect in Killing of Sgt Matt Ratana Named as Louis De Zoysa

Officer Shot Dead in Station by Man Held in Custody

Louis De Zoysa, the suspect in the killing of Met Police Sergeant Matt Ratana, remains in a critical condition in hospital and police said they have not yet been able to speak to him as part of the murder investigation

Daily Mirror UK, 29 SEP 2020.

The suspect in the killing of a veteran Metropolitan Police sergeant has been named as Louis De Zoysa.

The 23-year-old, who is thought to have shot himself, remains in a critical condition in hospital, and police said they have not yet been able to speak to him as part of the murder investigation.

It is claimed he was revived by doctors after 'dying' in hospital.

Sergeant Matiu (Matt) Ratana, 54, was fatally shot by a handcuffed suspect in the early hours of Friday at a police station in Croydon, south London.

It is said the officer, who was preparing for retirement, was planning to propose to girlfriend Sue Bushby, 44, after “six wonderful years” together. He is also survived by an adult son.

Louis De Zoysa, pictured blowing out birthday candles in 2017, is thought to have shot himself

A man has been arrested on suspicion of supplying a firearm in connection with the murder investigation. He was arrested at around 2am of Sunday in Norwich, Norfolk.

Searches in Pollards Hill, Norbury, where the suspect was initially arrested by officers for possession of ammunition and possession of class B drugs on Friday, have finished, police said.

Other searches are taking place at the suspect's home in Norbury in south London, and an address on Park Road, Banstead in Surrey, as well as forensic examinations on the custody suite where the incident unfolded in Croydon Custody Centre at about 2.15am on Friday.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which attended the scene after the shooting, said the murder suspect had been taken into the building and sat in a holding area in the custody suite, then opened fire while still in handcuffs as officers prepared to search him with a metal detector.

He had earlier been arrested following a stop and search, then handcuffed behind his back before being taken to the station in a police vehicle.

No police firearms were fired in the incident, and the case is not being treated as terror-related.

The suspect, from Norbury, is said to have 'died' in hospital before being revived by medics, the Sun reported.

Sergeant Ratana was originally from New Zealand and joined the Met in 1991. He was previously a protection officer to Princess Diana, the Queen Mother and ex-Prime Minister John Major.

The officer, who lived in Worthing, West Sussex, and was head coach for East Grinstead Rugby Club, was 300 yards from an IRA bomb that went off outside 10 Downing Street in 1992.

Sue’s heartbroken mum Penelope said Matt had been by her daughter's side all the time and had been a source of strength for her after she lost her father Roy earlier this year.

Mrs Bushby, 81, told the Sun: “He was a very lovely man. He loved my daughter and she loved him back. He couldn’t do enough for us or anybody who needed help."

Leading tributes to fallen officers on National Police Memorial Day (NPMD), Prince Charles said the fatal shooting is the "latest heartbreaking evidence" of the daily risks officers face.

He said such deaths are "losses we can never replace, sacrifices we can never repay".

What crimes have been reported in your neighbourhood? Check with In Your Area.

Addressing the annual memorial service in a video message, the Prince of Wales said: "The dreadful incident in Croydon on Friday is the latest heartbreaking evidence of the risks faced by our officers daily.

"I would like to send my deepest sympathy to the families of each of these officers who have given their lives.

"These are losses we can never replace, sacrifices we can never repay, but of which, as a society, we can only strive to be worthy."

Also on Sunday, Met Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick paid tribute to Sergeant Ratana as an "extraordinary person" who was "very good at his job".

Sergeant Ratana is the eighth police officer in the UK to be shot dead in the last 20 years (Image: pixel8000)

She spoke after a morning wreath-laying at the National Police Memorial in central London, which was also attended by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Home Secretary Priti Patel to mark NPMD.

Dame Cressida said Sergeant Ratana's death might give people an insight into the dangers and risks officers face.

She said: "If some good can come out of this terrible incident in which we have had one of our officers murdered, it would be that more people can understand a little bit about the challenges of police work and to see us police as who we are - human beings, going to work to help people, to support people and to protect people.

"Matt was the epitome of that."

Sergeant Ratana is the eighth police officer in the UK to be shot dead in the last 20 years and the first to be murdered by a firearm in the line of duty since PCs Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, in September 2012.

The Met sergeant is the 17th from the force to be killed by a firearm since the end of the Second World War, according to the National Police Memorial roll of honour.

RIP
Sergeant Ratana
