Police Officer Mowed Down in Hit-and-Run Attack When Responding to Riot Looters in New York

•2 Jun 2020, The Sun

An NYPD sergeant was struck by a driver who fled — and the cop went flying.

The officer was mowed down while in the Bronx borough of New York City, law enforcement sources told the New York Post.

Dramatic footage from the incident shows the officer standing in the middle of a crosswalk in an intersection.

A driver in a black car hits the officer, who is thrown into the air by the hit.

The cop then hits another vehicle before landing on the ground and laying stuck in the centre of the intersection.

Multiple Officers Shot During Overnight Protests

Multiple law enforcement officers were shot Monday night and Tuesday morning as protests continued across the nation in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis.

Four officers in St. Louis were hit with gunfire during overnight protests, and an officer shot in Las Vegas was in critical condition Tuesday morning, officials said.

The shooting incidents came hours after President Donald Trump addressed the nation at the White House Rose Garden, promising to deploy military forces if protests continued to turn violent.

Many demonstrations started out peacefully, but some, like the protests in Chicago and Seattle, became more violent as the day went on.

Monday marked one week since Floyd died after a Minneapolis police officer held his knee on Floyd's neck during an arrest. A report from Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office as well as a family-commissioned autopsy, both released Monday, ruled his death a homicide.

4 St. Louis Officers Hit by Gunfire

St. Louis police said four officers were hit by gunfire after protests that started peacefully Monday became violent overnight, as some smashed windows and stole items from businesses and fires burning in the downtown area.

The police department said on Twitter early Tuesday that the officers were taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. It was unclear who had fired the shots.

On Monday afternoon, several hundred people rallied peacefully outside the justice center in downtown St. Louis, including Mayor Lyda Krewson and St. Louis Public Safety Director Jimmie Edwards.

But later Monday, protesters gathered in front of police headquarters, where officers fired tear gas. Some protesters smashed windows at a downtown 7-11 store and stole items from inside before the building was set on fire. Moments later a car was set on fire and other businesses broken into and looted.

Las Vegas officer in critical condition

A Las Vegas Metro officer was in critical condition Tuesday morning after a man who was believed to be a protester shot him Monday night, Sheriff Joe Lombardo said.

Lombardo said officers were attempting to clear protesters from Las Vegas Boulevard when the officer was shot some time before midnight.

The officer was on life support at University Medical Center in Las Vegas Tuesday morning.

A suspect in the shooting was arrested about 2:30 a.m. local time.

Another shooting in Las Vegas took place Monday night when an armed man wearing body armor was shot and killed by police and federal agents guarding a federal building after he reached for his firearm at 11:22 p.m., the sheriff said. Lombardo said the man was an open-carry individual and was seen walking among protesters as the demonstration was dying down.

“What has occurred is utterly unacceptable," Lombardo said before ending the brief press conference.

2 New York officers struck by vehicle during protests in Buffalo

Two New York law enforcement officers were in stable condition after being struck by a vehicle during a Monday night protest, authorities said.

The officers — one of Buffalo Police Department, the other from New York State Police — were taken to Erie County Medical Center. Video of the incident shows a vehicle barreling through officers, accelerating through an intersection after several officers apparently tackled a person on the street and handcuffed him.

Those officers — and more, tending to injured law enforcement members — scatter as an SUV drives past a military vehicle on Buffalo’s east side. The SUV appears to drag at least one of the officers along briefly beneath the vehicle before speeding away. An ambulance was called to the scene.

“It is being investigated,” Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said told Buffalo 4 News. “We know people are angry and hurting ... but we need people to be very thoughtful right now about what they are doing.”

Officer killed in Oakland identified Sunday

A federal law enforcement officer who was shot and killed while providing security at the U.S. courthouse in Oakland during a protest was identified Sunday.

Dave Patrick Underwood, 53, died of gunshot wounds sustained after someone fired shots from an unidentified vehicle Friday night, the FBI said Sunday.

Underwood was the brother of Angela Underwood Jacobs, recently a Republican candidate to fill a vacant U.S. district north of Los Angeles.

“My brother, Dave Patrick Underwood, a federal officer, was murdered 5/29/20 in Oakland California, while on duty during the riots,” she posted on Facebook Saturday. “This Violence Must Stop.”

Gunshot at Cincinnati cop was 'intentional,' police chief says

In Cincinnati, a police officer was struck in the helmet by a bullet Saturday night during a confrontation with protesters but wasn't injured, the city's police chief says.

The round went through the officer's shield and struck his helmet. Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac said the officer initially thought it was a rock that struck him.

Isaac described the shooting as "intentional" at a Sunday press conference.
