George Floyd: Police Department Building Goes up in Flames During Third Night of Protests

Minnesota's governor Tim Walz has activated the National Guard to help police restore order amid continuing protests over the death of unarmed black man George Floyd

A police station in Minneapolis has been set on fire after protesters calling for justice for George Floyd let off fireworks, according to reports.

Dramatic images show the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct surrounded by flames on Thursday night, local time.

The station's windows were broken and protesters climbed over fences as officers retreated having fired projectiles, reports the New York Times.

Alarms blared as protesters continued to chant, according to reports.

“This is 400 years of anger,” one protester, Justin Galbraith, told The Daily Beast.

“There are so many innocent lives lost by the police. We protest peacefully and there is no accountability. So this happens,” demonstrator Cecilia Zwak said.

It comes as Minnesota's governor Tim Walz activated the National Guard to help police restore order against protests - now into their third night - over the death of unarmed black man Mr Floyd.

Graphic video footage shows the 46-year-old gasping for breath as white officer Derek Chauvin kneels on his neck for several minutes before he loses consciousness.

Mr Walz ordered Guard troops to assist police as local, state and federal law enforcement officials sought to ease racial tensions sparked by Monday night's fatal arrest by vowing to achieve justice in the case.

Four city police officers involved in the incident, including Chauvin, were fired from their jobs the next day.

The Floyd case is reminiscent of the 2014 killing of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man in New York City who died after being put in a banned police chokehold as he, too, was heard to mutter, "I can't breathe."

His dying words became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement that formed amid a wave of killings of African-Americans by police.

Protesters thronged Minneapolis streets for a third day on Thursday chanting "I can't breathe," as they rallied peacefully at the Hennepin County Government Center and marched through downtown, demanding the four officers be swiftly arrested.

"There is probable cause right now" to make those arrests, civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton said as he addressed the crowd.

"We're not asking for a favor. We're asking for what is right."

Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, said Floyd's case had renewed the trauma she suffered six years ago.

"This is just opening up an old wound, and pouring salt into it," she said.

Separately, hundreds of demonstrators milled around the police station and Target discount store that were the centre of running clashes Wednesday night between rock-throwing protesters and riot police firing tear gas and rubber bullets.

A car in the Target car park was set ablaze, and looters periodically ducked inside the vacant Target store to make off with whatever was left inside.

Both gatherings began with little police presence and no immediate sign of National Guard troops.

At a morning news briefing, Police Chief Medaria Arradondo apologized to Floyd's family, conceding his department had contributed to a "deficit of hope" in Minnesota's largest city.

Hours later, officials overseeing investigations from the U.S. Justice Department, FBI, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and local prosecutors appealed for calm at a joint news conference, as they gathered evidence.

"Give us the time to do this right, and we will bring you justice," County Attorney Mike Freeman told reporters.

He acknowledged the policeman's conduct depicted in the video was "horrible," but said, "My job is to prove that he has violated a criminal statute."

Minnesota's U.S. attorney, Erica McDonald, pledged a "robust and meticulous investigation into the circumstances surrounding" Floyd's arrest and death.

The federal investigation, which Attorney General William Barr had designated a "top priority," will focus on whether the arresting officers used the "color of law" to deprive Floyd of his civil rights, a crime under U.S. law, she said.

Floyd, a Houston native known affectionately to friends as "Big Floyd" and who had worked as a nightclub security staffer, was reportedly suspected of trying to pass counterfeit money when police took him into custody.

Wednesday's disturbances, punctuated by looting, vandalism and arson, began hours after Mayor Jacob Frey urged local prosecutors to file criminal charges in the case.

Most protesters had been peaceful, while a smaller, core contingent engaged in unruly behavior, the police chief said.

Sympathy protests erupted on Wednesday in Los Angeles and Thursday in Denver, with hundreds of demonstrators blocking freeway traffic in both cities.

In a sign the Floyd case had garnered international attention, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet urged U.S. authorities on Thursday to deal with "entrenched and pervasive racial discrimination" in America's criminal justice system.

The city named the four officers involved in the encounter as Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J Alexander Kueng.

Chauvin's attorney, Tom Kelly, declined comment in an email to Reuters.

Police department records posted online show 18 internal affairs complaints filed against Chauvin, 16 of which were closed without discipline.

The veteran officer allegedly tried to kill another black man, Ira Latrell Toles, during a domestic violence call in 2008.

Police Officer Filmed Kneeling on George Floyd's Neck Charged with Murder

Derek Chauvin charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter as county prosecutor suggests additional charges may be brought

The Guardian UK, 30 MAY 2020

Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer captured on video kneeling on the neck of 46-year-old George Floyd as he begged for his life, was charged on Friday afternoon with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

The state’s bureau of criminal apprehension took Chauvin, a 19-year veteran, into custody.

“We are in the process of continuing to review the evidence. There may be additional charges later,” the Hennepin county attorney, Mike Freeman, said.

Based on law enforcement review of body-cam video, state charging documents allege that the now former Minneapolis police officer kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for a total of nearly nine minutes, including two minutes and 43 seconds after Floyd became non-responsive.

Floyd’s family released a statement calling the arrest a “welcome but overdue step on the road to justice” and added that members “expected a first-degree murder charge”, which they still demand.

“The pain that the black community feels over this murder and what it reflects about the treatment of black people in America is raw and spilling out on to streets across [the country],” the statement read.

Under Minnesota law, a first-degree murder charge would require prosecutors prove Chauvin’s actions were willful and premeditated. Freeman confirmed authorities are still investigating.

The charges came as Andrea Jenkins, the city council vice-president, confirmed Floyd and Chauvin knew each other as “co-workers for a very long time”. The men worked together for more than 17 years as bouncers at a local club, El Nuevo Rodeo.

Maya Santamaria, the owner of El Nuevo Rodeo, told CNN Friday that on “urban nights”, Chauvin was known to treat black patrons more “skittish” and “anxious” than the club’s usual Latino patrons, eagerly reaching for “pepper spray with any little thing that might happen”.

“They certainly acted like a group mentality,” she said. “They always had to call backup. It was different than what we saw on our Latin nights.”

In Washington, the US attorney general, William Barr, called the video footage “harrowing to watch and deeply disturbing”. He also confirmed a separate US justice department investigation “to determine whether any federal civil rights laws were violated”.

Smoke hung over the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis on Friday after demonstrators burned down the city’s third police precinct, the headquarters of the officers involved in Floyd’s death.

As flames engulfed the building, chants of Floyd’s name and “No justice, no peace” rang out. Some protesters celebrated with fireworks, while police officers watched from two blocks away but did not intervene.

Floyd died in police custody on Monday after the white officer handcuffed him before kneeling on his neck , despite Floyd’s pleas that he could not breathe.

Four officers, including Chauvin, were fired the next day.

Cellphone video footage of Floyd suffocating under the officer’s knee has gone viral, prompting three nights of protests in Minneapolis and reigniting longstanding anger over systemic racism in America, especially in the criminal justice system.

While the majority of protesters were peaceful, some demonstrators looted businesses. Seven people were shot and injured in demonstrations in Louisville, Kentucky, 40 were arrested in New York city protests occurred in several other states.

“I’m really angry about George Floyd because we went through all of this with Michael Brown [who was killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014] and it seems nothing changes,” said Marie Johnson, who described herself as black and Native American, as she watched looting in Minneapolis.

“But I’m not at peace with this either. I get that people are angry but it feels like a lot of people here are just grabbing the opportunity for free shopping.”

In Louisville, protesters demanded justice for Breonna Taylor, a black woman fatally shot by police in her home in March.

The families of Taylor, Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, a black jogger who was recently killed by two white male vigilantes – including a retired police officer – in Georgia, released a statement late on Thursday calling their killings part of “a national crisis”.

“Our government needs to take immediate and widespread action to protect our black and brown communities,” the statement read.

The families appeared in a joint press conference on Friday to call for more police accountability and an intervention by Congress and the United Nations.

Trump denounced protesters as “thugs” on Thursday night and appeared to threaten lethal force, tweeting that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts”.

Trump rarely comments on incidents of police brutality against black people.

Twitter hid Trump’s post, saying it violated their policies “regarding the glorification of violence”.

On Friday morning the police and national guard sealed off the streets around the third precinct, allowing in only clean up crews to deal with the debris of the previous night’s destruction. The ground was layered with shattered glass.

Some passers by taunted the police officers with promises to be back later.

Then came news that the police officer who was filmed kneeling on George Floyd’s neck was charged with murder.

“Y’all should be charged with murder,” shouted a young man on a bike at the police line. “Y’all got blood on your hands. Not just George’s blood. Centuries of blood.”

Then he cycled off.

Others were more sanguine.

“Maybe it’ll help quiet things down,” said Ashley Sanders, who said she took part in only the peaceful side of the protests the previous evening.

“I hate to say this but if these buildings weren’t burning, would they have taken it as seriously? ”

Others were less forgiving. Ayanle Hashi was cleaning up the looted shops in the bottom of his apartment block. He had stood guard all night for fear his home would be razed.

“How does this help George Floyd get justice?” he said. “You think the police care if these people destroy this place where we live?”

Sandra Hilbrands, wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt, joined a volunteer clean-up crew picking up glass.

“Our city needs help right now more than anything,” said the primary school teacher. “I’m very privileged. I don’t know what it is like to be afraid of the cops. I think people are reacting.” Initially reluctant, she did watch the video. “I have to watch this. I have a responsibility,” she said.

The presumptive Democratic nominee for president, Joe Biden, said: “The original sin of this country still stains our nation today and sometimes we managed to overlook it. But it’s always there. And in weeks like this, we see it plainly that we are a country with an open wound.

“None of us can be silent,” he continued. “None of us can … hear the words ‘I can’t breathe’ and do nothing.”

END

NB Members: If that cop gets convicted I hope they remember this:

THE SONYA IVANOFF LAW 2007;

The law mandates a sentence of 99 years to any officer who murders someone while on duty.

& Wife of Ex-Cop Charged with Murdering George Floyd Announces She's Divorcing Him

Kellie Chauvin, whose husband Derek Chauvin has been charged with George Floyd's murder, is said to be "devastated" and filing for divorce, according to a statement

Daily Mirror UK, 30 MAY 2020

The wife of former police officer Derek Chauvin has filed for divorce after he was charged with George Floyd's murder, according to reports.

Kellie Chauvin, who released a statement through a lawyer last night, is said to be "devastated" by Mr Floyd's death and has offered her condolences to his family, CBS Minnesota reports.

Her husband has been charged with third degree murder and manslaughter after he was pictured kneeling on the 46-year-old's neck.

The shamed cop was one of four officers fired following the horrifying incident in Minneapolis on Monday.

Mr Floyd was filmed repeatedly saying he could not breathe as he was pinned to the ground by Chauvin, and died shortly afterwards.

Mrs Chauvin is said to be "devastated" by George Floyd's death

In a statement released by Sekula Law Offices, Mrs Chauvin, who was crowned Mrs Minnesota in 2018, says she has now filed for dissolution of her marriage.

“This evening, I spoke with Kellie Chauvin and her family. She is devastated by Mr. Floyd’s death and her utmost sympathy lies with his family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy," it reads.

"She has filed for dissolution of her marriage to Derek Chauvin.
“While Ms. Chauvin has no children from her current marriage, she respectfully requests that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy during this difficult time."

His death has sparked huge anger, with violent protests and calls for the officers involved to face murder charges.

Today, after four days of unrest, authorities finally confirmed Chauvin had been arrested and charged.

The city's mayor has previously said that if Mr Floyd was white, he would still be alive.

Witnesses have disputed the Minneapolis Police Department's claims that 46-year-old Mr Floyd - who was unarmed - was resisting arrest.

It is not yet clear what, if any, action will be taken against the three other officers - Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J Alexander Kueng.

New footage which emerged on Friday appears to show three officers kneeling on Mr Floyd.

Tragically he died in hospital a short time after the footage was taken.

Mike Freeman, Hennepin County attorney, told a news briefing: "He is in custody and has been charged with murder.

"We have evidence, we have the citizen's video, the horrible, horrific, terrible thing we've seen over and over again."

In a statement today former President Barack Obama called for the incident to be fully investigated.

He wrote: "It can't be 'normal.' If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better."

Mr Floyd's death has sparked outrage around the world, and his brother Philonise Floyd has branded it an "execution".

He told CNN 's New Day: "These guys need to be arrested, convicted of murder, and given the death penalty.

"They need to. They took my brother's life."

Shocking footage showed Mr Floyd repeatedly moaning and gasping while he pleaded to the officer kneeling on his neck, saying: "Please, I can't breathe."

After several minutes, he gradually went quiet and ceased to move.

Rather than appeal for calm, the President vowed to unleash hell against thousands of demonstrators growing increasingly angry over the death of yet another black person in custody.

His Twitter post was quickly marked with a warning by the social media company as they labelled accompanying comments “glorifying violence”.

Movies re: US BURNS as Scared TRUMP Runs to Bunker & White House Goes Dark

George Floyd Death: America Burns as 23 States Protest > Police Deliberately Drive SUV into Crowds as Trump Comments Inflame Tensions

There has been widespread outrage in the US following the death of another unarmed black man at the hands of a US police officer

Saturday Trump belittled some of the protesters who have taken to the streets in cities across the United States, and raised the prospect of deploying violence against the American people for the second time in two days. He drew fierce condemnation for using the language of violent segregationists during the civil rights era.

Daily Mirror UK / The Guardian / Irish Central, 31 MAY 2020

Late on Friday, as protesters gathered in front of the White House, Trump had tweeted that protesters could have been attacked with “vicious dogs and ominous weapons” wielded by the US Secret Service. He also attacked the mayor for supposedly not providing police to protect the White House.

We're rapidly reaching a cultural tipping point - and the iceberg that sinks Trump will be Trump himself.

“They let the ‘protesters’ scream and rant as much as they wanted, but whenever someone got too frisky or out of line, they would quickly come down on them, hard – didn’t know what hit them,” Trump said.

Without evidence, the president claimed the protesters were “professionally” organized.

“If they had breached the fence” he said, “they would have been greeted with the most vicious dogs, and most ominous weapons, I have ever seen. That’s when people would have been really badly hurt, at least.

Bowser, an onlooker, said that she stood with peaceful protesters while Trump “hides behind his fence”.

“To make a reference to vicious dogs is no subtle reminder to African Americans of segregationists who let dogs out on women, children and innocent people in the south,” Bowser said.
She added:
“There are no vicious dogs & ominous weapons. There is just a scared man. Afraid/Alone.”

George Floyd Death: Police 'Deliberately Drive SUV into Crowds' as Protests Rage Across US

A shocking video appears to show a police cruiser charging towards demonstrators in New York, while tear gas has been fired outside the White House as crowds demand justice following George Floyd's death

A police cruiser has knocked protesters to the ground in New York City as protests over the death of George Floyd continue to rage.

A shocking video posted on Twitter on Saturday night appears to show the NYPD vehicle being deliberately driven into crowds in Brooklyn.

Trump, a President as Cruel and Low as The Time We Live In

"I think it's undeniable the wheels have come off the entire Trump presidency at the same time as they're coming off the nation. Trump prefers to fan the flames"

Over 101,000 Americans have died, 40 million Americans have become unemployed, but instead of offering words to heal and help Trump did what he always does in a crisis, throw petrol on the culture war's flames.

Even Taylor Swift has had enough of him.

Clearly, if Taylor is speaking out we're reaching a tipping point. When you have lost the nation's sweetheart, you've lost America.

Yesterday, she decided she could take no more. Responding to his threat to have the military shoot American citizens in Minnesota, she Tweeted:

“You have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence?”

There is an inevitability to it. Elect a cruel and callow president and - as night follows day - you will usher in a cruel and callow age.

The coronavirus has been busy pulling the mask off every systemic inequality and ever festering social sore in the nation as it flares up and continues to transmit from coast to coast.

Reflect that right now coronavirus is raging especially hard through the most deprived zip codes in the nation, most all of them communities of color, and the people who live there are dying at double and triple the rates of everyone else.

Nearly 23 percent of reported Covid-19 deaths in the United States are African Americans, even though black people make up roughly just 13 percent of the population. These are the people he is now threatening with violence.

Reflect that if you're a young black male in America in 2020, you can’t go for a jog, you can’t wear a mask to the grocery store, you can’t wear a hoodie in public, you can’t even go birding in the Central Park Rambles without the constant threat of racial profiling, arrest, choking or being shot.

It’s systemic state terror. It simply has to stop.

This week we watched Trump threaten the Minneapolis rioters, some of whom were white and filmed looting under highly questionable circumstances, but where was his outrage when a far more significant public heist occurred right under his nose?

American billionaires have gotten at least $434 billion richer during this pandemic. Where is his discomfort over that?

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg reportedly saw the biggest gains, with Bezos adding $34.6 billion to his wealth and Zuckerberg adding $25 billion.

With consumers trapped at home for over two and a half months, online retail orders inevitably exploded (along with the trading markets) to the point where Amazon has said it’s now hiring 75,000 more workers.

So as ordinary Americans cower at home and hope a biblical plague will pass their doorstep, billionaires here were being rewarded with even more unimaginable riches at the same time 40 million Americans lost their jobs.

The imbalance between these two worlds has become extraordinary and dangerous. The 400 richest Americans now have as much combined wealth as the poorest 64 percent of American households.

Add to that that the poorest 64 percent pay more in taxes than Bezos.

As lines for food handouts stretch for block after block and the predominantly undocumented workers who ran the cities bars and restaurants before the lockdown are thrown to the wolves, the nations five richest billionaires - Bezos, Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Larry Ellison - all saw combined wealth gains of $76 billion.

There's been a lot of handwringing articles about the looting in Minneapolis. I have barely seen any about this ongoing heist. How long can this go on before tumbrels roll?

More Americans have died in the last two and a half months than US soldiers died in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and all the US wars since 9/11 – combined. We could use national leadership now to navigate the challenges facing us, but it is MIA.

The United States is only 4 percent of the world's population but it has 29 percent of all Covid-19 deaths. That, by any metric, is a catastrophic public disaster.

It is a total failure of leadership.

White House Plunged into Darkness as Washington DC Protests Erupt and Trump Flees

US President Donald Trump was reportedly whisked into a secure White House bunker usually used by leaders in terror attacks as protests erupted across Washington DC on Friday night

Daily Mirror UK, 1 JUN 2020

The White House was plunged into darkness last night in a rare move at the landmark as fiery protests raged outside as the US faces another day of unrest.

Shutting off its external lights, the White House was almost in complete darkness on Sunday night as fires burned nearby.

Donald Trump is said to have been whisked into a secure bunker previously used by leaders during against terrorist attacks

Secret Service agents reportedly took him into the protective facility as the demonstrations flared up outside the White House gates on Friday night, and its lights were turned off.

Trump tweeted claims the bunker story was "FAKE NEWS", but officials have since admitted the president and his family were never in any real danger amid three consecutive nights of violent protests near the Executive Mansion.

60 Secret Service Officers Injured as Situation at White House Escalates

The rioting that has engulfed many American cities surged near the White House this weekend, damaging a historic church across from the White House and leaving multiple Secret Service agents injured.

“Between Friday night and Sunday morning, more than 60 Secret Service Uniformed Division Officers and Special Agents sustained multiple injuries from projectiles such as bricks, rocks, bottles, fireworks and other items,” the Secret Service said in a statement on its website.

“Secret Service personnel were also directly physically assaulted as they were kicked, punched, and exposed to bodily fluids,” it said.

“A total of 11 injured employees were transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.”

The Secret Service said it “respects the right to assemble, and we ask that individuals do so peacefully for the safety of all.”

Trump Threatens to Deploy Military and Declares Himself 'President of Law and Order'. Then Has Protesters Tear-Gassed Outside White House so He Can Walk to a Fire-Damaged Church and Brandish an Upside Down Bible

ADOLPH Trump threatened to mobilise the military across the US, said he was deploying thousands of heavily armed soldiers in Washington, and declared himself the "president of law and order”.

In extraordinary scenes, Trump made the declaration in the White House Rose Garden as riot police used tear gas, rubber bullets,
flash bangs and horses to clear peaceful protesters outside.

Asked if Trump would be welcome at the church now, Mariann Budde, the Bishop of Washington, said: “He is welcome to pray. Presidents are welcome as citizens of our country, to pray, to kneel before God in humility.
“He is not entitled to use the symbolism to promote an entirely different message.

The outrage we are hearing from so many of the nation’s young people and people of colour, we need to align ourselves with the God of unconditional love and justice.”

His destination was the boarded up St John's Church....

He then left the White House and walked, with some of his closest officials and Secret Service agents, through lingering tear gas, across Pennsylvania Avenue and Lafayette Park.

Holding up a Bible in his right hand outside the church, Mr Trump said:

"We have a great country. It'll be greater than ever before. I'm going to keep it nice and safe.”

In his speech a few minutes earlier at the White House, Mr Trump said: "I am mobilising all available federal resources, civilian and military, to stop the rioting and looting.”

The president said he was recommending state governors deploy the National Guard to "dominate the streets.”

If they failed to take action then "I will deploy the US military and quickly solve the problem for them," he said.

He also called them a bunch of jerks for not doing so

Mr Trump said rioting in Washington was a "total disgrace”.

He said: "As we speak I am dispatching thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers, military personnel and law enforcement officers, to stop the rioting, looting and wanton destruction of property.”

But he added: "We cannot allow the righteous cries of peaceful protesters to be drowned out by an angry mob. I will fight to protect you......

"A number of state and local governors have failed to take action.

Derek Chauvin, the officer who was filmed kneeling on his neck, has had his charge increased to second degree murder.

•3 Jun 2020 BBC News

Three other police officers who were there have been charged with aiding and abetting murder.

George Floyd's death has sparked huge protests in cities across America.

James Mattis: Trump's Former Defence Secretary Denounces President

Former US Defence Secretary James Mattis has denounced President Donald Trump, accusing him of stoking division and abusing his authority.

BBC, 4 JUN 2020

In rare public comments, Mr Mattis said the president had sought to "divide" the American people and had failed to provide "mature leadership".

He said he was "angry and appalled" by Mr Trump's handling of recent unrest.

In response, the president described Mr Mattis as an "overrated general" and said he was glad he had left the post.

Mr Mattis resigned in 2018 after Mr Trump decided to withdraw US troops from Syria.

He has remained mostly silent since then, until his rebuke of the Trump administration was published in The Atlantic magazine on Wednesday.

In response to the fresh criticism, Mr Trump posted a series of tweets in which he claimed to have fired Mr Mattis.

"I didn't like his "leadership" style or much else about him, and many others agree," he wrote. "Glad he is gone!"

Quote:
Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump;

Probably the only thing Barack Obama & I have in common is that we both had the honor of firing Jim Mattis, the world’s most overrated General.
I asked for his letter of resignation, & felt great about it. His nickname was “Chaos”, which I didn’t like, & changed to “Mad Dog”...
...His primary strength was not military, but rather personal public relations. I gave him a new life, things to do, and battles to win, but he seldom “brought home the bacon”.
I didn’t like his “leadership” style or much else about him, and many others agree. Glad he is gone!

What Did Mattis Say?

"Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people - does not even pretend to try," Mr Mattis wrote in The Atlantic. "Instead, he tries to divide us."

He continued: "We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership."

Mr Mattis also addressed the recent wave of anti-racism protests that were triggered by the death of African-American George Floyd in police custody earlier this month.

Four officers have been charged in relation to Mr Floyd's death in Minneapolis on 25 May. The charge against Derek Chauvin was elevated to second-degree murder on Wednesday.

The vast majority of demonstrations over the past nine days have been peaceful, but some have turned violent and curfews have been imposed in a number of cities.

"We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers," Mr Mattis wrote. "The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values... as a nation."

The retired general - whose resignation letter in December 2018 was full of implied criticism of the president's foreign policy - also condemned the use of the military in response to the protests.

"Never did I dream that troops... would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens," he said.

"Militarising our response, as we witnessed in Washington DC, sets up a conflict... between the military and civilian society," he added.

Mr Mattis was referring to an incident earlier this week when peaceful protesters were dispersed with tear gas and rubber bullets from a park close to the White House.

Mr Trump then crossed the park for a photo-op at a historic church that had been damaged by fire in the unrest.

This provoked sharp criticism from top Democrats and religious leaders, who accused the president of aggressively targeting the demonstrators for the purpose of posing for photographs.

In his latest comments, Mr Mattis derided the "bizarre photo-op" and said clearing the park of demonstrators beforehand was an "abuse of executive authority".

Mr Trump has repeatedly questioned whether the protesters were peaceful and, in an earlier tweet, he said "people liked my walk to this historic place of worship".

And in an interview with his former press secretary Sean Spicer on Wednesday, the president once again defended the church visit. He said it was "handled really well" and "religious leaders loved it".

Protests over the death of George Floyd continued in dozens of cities on Wednesday night despite widespread curfews.

They have been largely peaceful, with cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago relaxing their restrictions amid hopes that the worst of the violence had passed.

A post-mortem examination has revealed that Floyd had the coronavirus in early April. But officials stressed that this played no role in his death.

Update re: Civil Rights Groups Sue Trump & Barr For Use of Teargas Against Peaceful Protesters

Mugshots Released of all Four Police Officers Charged Over George Floyd Killing

Veteran cop Derek Chauvin now faces 40 years in prison after his charge was upgraded to second-degree murder, while Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao have also been charged

Daily Mirror UK, 4 JUN 2020

The mugshots of all four officers charged over George Floyd's killing have been released - with Derek Chauvin facing 40 years.

On Wednesday, prosecutors leveled new criminal charges against all the Minneapolis cops at the scene of the unarmed black man's death.

The 46-year-old dad was pinned by his neck to the street during an arrest before later dying in hospital on May 25, sparking nine days of protests.

Veteran cop Chauvin, arrested Friday on charges of third-degree murder and manslaughter, was newly charged with an additional, more serious count of second-degree murder, according to court documents filed in the case.

The new charge can carry a sentence of up to 40 years, 15 years longer than the maximum sentence for third-degree murder.

Chauvin, 44, was the white officer seen in a widely circulated video kneeling on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes.

The victim can be heard gasping for air as he repeatedly groaned,

"Please, I can't breathe," before growing motionless while bystanders shouted at police to let him up.

Thomas Lane (Image: via REUTERS)

Three fellow officers, quickly dismissed from the Minneapolis police department along with Chauvin, were charged on Wednesday for the first time.

Each with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and with aiding and abetting manslaughter.

Those three - Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao - have also been taken into custody.

Tou Thao (Image: via REUTERS)

Mr Floyd had been dragged from his car and cuffed on an intersection after police suspected him of trying to pass a counterfeit bill to pay for cigarettes.

His death has become the latest flashpoint for long-simmering rage over police brutality against African Americans, with protesters flooding the streets for days.

Demonstrators had demanded the case be widened to include all the officers.

J. Alexander Kueng (Image: via REUTERS)

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, a black former U.S. congressman, has requested that bail be set at $1 million for each of the four former officers, court documents showed.

Earl Gray, the attorney for Lane, said he had not received any information on the charges yet.

Attorneys for the other officers who are being charged did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Update Re: Civil Rights Groups Sue Trump & Barr For Use of Teargas Against Peaceful Proteste

Civil Rights Groups Sue Trump and Barr For Use of Teargas Against Peaceful Protesters Outside White House

The lawsuit alleges The Trump administration’s actions to shut down the Lafayette Square demonstration, is the manifestation of the very despotism against which the First Amendment was intended to protect.

Gregg Kelley, Washington Lawyers’ Committee For Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, 4 JUN 2020

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) –
Protesters who were attacked by federal troops in front of the White House Monday night as they were demonstrating nonviolently against police brutality sued President Donald Trump, Attorney General William Barr, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, and numerous other federal officials today for violating their constitutional rights.

The lawsuit was filed by the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, ACLU of the District of Columbia, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and the law firm of Arnold & Porter.

“What happened to our members Monday evening, here in the nation’s capital, was an affront to all our rights,” said April Goggans, Core Organizer of Black Lives Matter D.C., the lead plaintiff in the case. “The death of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police officers has reignited the rage, pain, and deep sadness our community has suffered for generations. We won’t be silenced by tear gas and rubber bullets. Now is our time to be heard.”

Hundreds of protesters were gathered Monday evening in Lafayette Square, the park in front of the White House, to demonstrate solidarity with the nationwide Black Lives Matter movement and protest police brutality, including the recent murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Immediately preceding the president’s appearance in the Rose Garden at approximately 6:30 PM, officers of the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police, D.C. National Guard, U.S. Military Police, and Arlington County (Va.) Police Department conducted a coordinated charge into the nonviolent and unresisting crowd of demonstrators, and deployed several rounds of tear gas, rubber bullets, and sound cannons to disperse the crowd away from the park.

Following his brief statement, President Trump and White House officials walked to St. John’s Episcopal Church, the historic church that had been damaged by a fire set during the previous days’ protests, to pose for pictures in front of the church holding a Bible.

The case filed today, Black Lives Matter D.C. v. Trump, on behalf of Black Lives Matter D.C. and five individual protesters who were assaulted at Lafayette Square, asserts that Trump, Barr, and numerous other high-level federal officials and line officers of the Secret Service, Park Police, D.C. National Guard, U.S. Military Police, and Arlington County Police violated protesters’ First Amendment right to freedom of speech and assembly

Violated their Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable seizures, and engaged in a conspiracy to violate their civil rights. The case seeks an injunction against future such attacks and damages for the injuries sustained by the individual plaintiffs—including a 9-year-old boy—and Black Lives Matter D.C..

It was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

The complaint can be found here.

Below are additional comments:

“The deaths at the hands of police of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other people of color has brought people to the streets across the nation to call for change. At this moment, the White House is a uniquely important venue for protest and demonstration.

The actions in Lafayette park were a shocking assault on the First Amendment rights of people peaceably assembled to call upon their government for action,” said Jonathan M. Smith, Executive Director, Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs.

“The President’s shameless, unconstitutional, and frankly criminal attack on peaceful protesters because he disagreed with their views shakes the foundation of our nation’s constitutional order,” said Scott Michelman, legal director, ACLU of the District of Columbia. “And when the nation’s top law enforcement officer becomes complicit in the tactics of an autocrat, it chills protected speech for all of us.”

“For the President to refer to this assault as domination is very telling and indicates a willingness to use brute force to trample on the rights of Americans,” said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

“The Lafayette Square assault amounts to unconstitutional and unlawful state-sponsored violence perpetrated against nonviolent civil rights activists. The actions of the government caused harm and were intended to chill the speech and right to assembly of people exercising constitutionally protected rights. This lawsuit is about defending rights that lie at the heart of our democracy.”

Trump Says George Floyd is Happy & 'Hopefully He's Looking Down'

Daily Mirror UK, 6 JUN 2020

Protests Continue Across UK and US After George Floyd's Family Call for Peaceful Tributes

George Floyd's grieving brother said he is "proud of protests, not destruction" in an emotional plea for peace on Thursday - just hours before crowds defied New York City's curfew again.

“You are not alone,” the large crowd at Brooklyn's Cadman Plaza chanted before a grief-stricken Terrence Floyd as he thanked them for their support of his brother at a memorial in the city.

"I thank God for you all showing love to my brother," he told supporters at the massive gathering - while the rest of his family gathered for the first of three memorials in Minneapolis.

"I'm proud of the protests but I’m not proud of the destruction. My brother wasn’t about that.

"The Floyd's are a God-fearing family. Power to the people, all of us," Terrence added.

New Anger in US Over Video of Police Violence Causing Death of 75yr Old Man

Footage has emerged of a 75-year-old demonstrator, protesting the death of George Floyd, being pushed to the ground by officers and suffering serious head injuries.

- BBC News • 6 Jun 2020

It happened in the city of Buffalo, in upstate New York. The two officers involved have been suspended.

Protests have continued across America after the death of Mr Floyd, who died at the hands of four police officers, in the city of Minneapolis last month.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting from North America Correspondent Aleem Maqbool.

WASHINGTON MAYOR Paints BLM on Main Street & Changes Street Name

Global News 6 JUN 2020

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser renamed a street near the White House “Black Lives Matter Plaza,” and had city workers join activists in painting the slogan in huge yellow letters on the roadway.

Bowser’s endorsement of the project follows her verbal clashes with U.S. President Donald Trump over his response to anti-racism protests across the United States.

The city had the street sign installed at the intersection of H and 16th Streets, where a historic church that was the site of Trump’s controversial photo op is located.

The president came under fire earlier this week when he posed with a bible outside St. John’s Episcopal Church after police had been ordered to clear the square of protesters using tear gas and other methods of force.

Update re: TRUMP Says Chokeholds Innocent & Perfect-Compares Himself to President Lincoln

Trump's Scrapping of Obama-era Reforms Hinders Police Reform

Trump’s justice department has dropped the use of consent decrees to bring federal oversight of troubled police departments

The Guardian UK, 8 JUN 2020

The Trump administration has dismantled key federal tools for imposing accountability on police forces engaging in systemic racial discrimination, severely hampering efforts to heal the wounds of the police killing of George Floyd and the ongoing protests convulsing the country.

Under Donald Trump, the US justice department has allowed federal mechanisms designed to impose change on racist police agencies to wither on the vine. As a result, law enforcement agencies that practice racial profiling, use excessive force and other forms of unconstitutional policing are now free from federal oversight.

The most important of those tools, known as consent decrees, were deployed extensively by the Barack Obama administration in the wake of previous high-profile police killings of unarmed black men. They included the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014; 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio, that same year; and the 2015 death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Maryland.

Under Obama, 14 consent decrees were enforced upon troubled and discriminatory police agencies. By contrast, none have been issued in the more than three years of the Trump administration.

By scrapping the use of consent decrees, Trump has effectively made it much harder for the US to recover from the turmoil roiling the nation. In the absence of federal pressure, any reform impetus will have to come from cities and states acting in isolation or from inside police agencies that are likely to be resistant to change.

Jonathan Smith, who led the special litigation section of the justice department between 2010 and 2015 and supervised numerous federal investigations into police departments including Ferguson, said the lack of federal action would drag out the current malaise.

“The protests aren’t going to die down. We have a very long summer ahead of us,” he said.

Smith said that the scrapping of consent decrees was part of a general message coming from the Trump administration that police forces engaging in brutal and racist practices were above reproach.

“It’s appalling that today’s justice department is saying that police are now immune from any consequences of their bad conduct – that is terribly dangerous and corrosive,” Smith said.

The decision to scupper consent decrees was taken by Trump’s first US attorney general, Jeff Sessions. As one of his final acts in the post, in November 2018 he released a memo that so drastically curtailed the remit of the agreements as to render them moribund.

Attempting to justify the change, Sessions made clear he believed policing should be left to local and state law enforcement bodies, no matter how brutally they treated black and other minority citizens supposedly under their protection.

“It is not the responsibility of the federal government to manage non-federal law enforcement agencies,” he said.

As attorney general, Jeff Sessions made consent decrees in effect moribund by drastically curtailing their remit.

Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, said it was “astonishing the attorney general can simply decide to leave on the shelf a critical tool that would allow us to address this terrible problem”.

She added that Sessions’ decision to abdicate from federal government oversight of unconstitutional policing was in tune with his longstanding opposition to tackling systemic racial discrimination within policing.

Sessions’ approach has been continued by his successor as US attorney general, Bill Barr. “Sessions and Barr embrace the ‘bad apples’ theory of police brutality – they simply won’t accept the concept of systemic discrimination in police departments,” Ifill said. “This is catastrophic. Prosecuting police officers, one by one, will not result in fundamental change.”

Consent decrees fall under the 1994 Law Enforcement Misconduct Act that was passed by Congress in the wake of the brutal beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police three years earlier. The statute allows the US government to sue local police agencies that engage in “patterns and practices” of unconstitutional policing and fail to comply with essential reforms.

The provision has made a profound impact on several of the most troubled police forces in the country, including Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray. The 25-year-old black man died in April 2015 after he sustained spinal injuries while being transported under arrest in a police van.

Since it was introduced, Baltimore’s consent decree has been credited with bringing critical change to policing in that city.

Important re: TRUMP Says Chokeholds Innocent & Perfect-Compares Himself to President Lincoln

Ku Klux Klan Leader Charged For Attack on Black Lives Matter Protesters

A self-described Ku Klux Klan leader has been arrested for allegedly driving his car into a group of Black Lives Matters protesters gathered on Sunday in the US state of Virginia.

BBC, 9 JUN 2020

Prosecutors say that Harry Rogers, 36, drove "recklessly" towards a protest in Henrico County, and "revved the engine" before driving into protesters.

Mr Rogers appeared in Henrico court on the outskirts of Richmond on Monday, facing charges of assault and battery.

A hate crime investigation is underway.

One protester was injured and treated at the scene, authorities said, but was not seriously hurt.

In a separate incident on Sunday night, a man drove at a crowd of protesters in Seattle, and brandished a gun at them. The suspect is now in custody, while a 27-year-old man who was shot at the scene was taken to hospital, local authorities said.

Anti-racism protests sparked by the death of George Floyd are entering their third week. Mr Floyd died while being restrained by a Minnesota police officer last month. Large rallies and protests have been held in several US cities, including Richmond, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

Though some protests have involved rioting or looting, and violent clashes between participants and police, an overwhelming majority have been peaceful.

"An attack on peaceful protesters is heinous and despicable and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law," Henrico Country Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor said in a statement.

Mr Rogers told officers he was president of the Virginia KKK, the highest-ranking member of the white supremacist group not in prison, US media report.

"The accused, by his own admission and by a cursory glance at social media, is an admitted leader of the Ku Klux Klan and a propagandist for Confederate ideology," Ms Taylor said. "This egregious criminal act will not go unpunished. Hate has no place here under my watch."

The Virginia governor has ordered a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee to be removed amid protests against racial injustice

Mr Rogers is expected back in court in August.

Virginia has long been a locus for racial tensions in the US. - (It had many Plantations, mostly owned by English settlers !)

Heated debate around Confederate symbols in the state, and the statue of Confederate general Robert Lee sparked the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, about 80 miles from Henrico.

At that rally, a man drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing a woman. He was found guilty of murder.

Mr Rogers was also pictured at that white nationalist rally, according to the Guardian.

Last week, amid Black Lives Matters protests over the killing of Mr Floyd, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced that a statue of Lee would be removed from the state capital and "immediately" put into storage.
END

NB: I hope no more
KKK members crawl out of their pits to commit similar attacks... Sadly I think they will already be planning them...Watch this space...

Oh Crap! re: Robert Mueller Breaks Silence & Condemns TRUMP on Commuting Stone's Sentence

Trump Says Chokeholds Sound Innocent and Perfect and Compares Himself to President Lincoln

President calls plan for Juneteenth rally ‘a celebration’ despite its location in Tulsa, known for massacre of African Americans

The Guardian UK, 15 JUN 2020

Quote:
Abraham Lincoln Spoke Out Against Slavery:

On October 16, 1854, an obscure lawyer and Congressional hopeful from the state of Illinois named Abraham Lincoln delivers a speech regarding the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which Congress had passed five months earlier. In his speech, the future president denounced the act and outlined his views on slavery, which he called “immoral.”

Donald Trump further stoked controversy over race issues and policing by remarking on Friday that chokeholds sounded “so innocent and so perfect”, and once again claimed he has been the best president for black Americans – only partially conceding that Abraham Lincoln may have surpassed him.

Trump also called his choice to resume rallies on 19 June, the Juneteenth day marking the end of slavery, “a celebration”, despite having picked a city known for a historic massacre of black Americans by white Americans and used divisive language over the anti-racism protests spurred by the police killing of George Floyd.

Critics decry Trump election rally in city of Tulsa race massacre on Juneteenth....

As more American cities and states move to ban chokehold-type restraints by police, Trump said he would like to see a ban on such tactics in most instances, but suggested their use would be understandable in some situations.

“I don’t like chokeholds ... [but] sometimes, if you’re alone and you’re fighting someone, it’s tough,” he said in an interview with Fox News on Friday.

He gave an example of a “really bad person” confronting a police officer and said that situation had played out amid the protests, which were sparked after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes during an arrest attempt in May.

The autopsy report concluded homicide and the now former officer, Derek Chauvin, was charged with murder. A video by a witness went viral and spurred protests over police bias and brutality and wider issues of societal racism.

“You saw some very good people protesting, but you saw some bad people also,” Trump said. “And you get somebody in a chokehold. What are you going to do now? Let go and say, ‘Oh, let’s start all over again’?”

Trump later said be believed chokeholds to be theoretically acceptable, but he acknowledged they are often used inappropriately by police.

“I think the concept of chokeholds sounds so innocent and so perfect,” Trump said, adding that “you have to be careful. With that being said, it would be, I think, a very good thing that, generally speaking, it should be ended.”

The remarks followed action by a number of US cities and states towards banning police chokeholds. In the latest such move, the New York governor, Andrew Cuomo signed legislation on Friday morning to ban chokeholds in the state.

In the interview with Fox News’s Harris Faulkner, Trump had been emphasizing the outbreaks of rioting and looting seen during early nights of unrest after Floyd’s killing, on the fringe of larger, peaceful protests.

When Faulkner asked the president what he would say to the many peaceful demonstrators, he said: “I think you had protesters for different reasons, and then you had protesting also because, you know, they just didn’t know … they’re following the crowd.”

Fire, pestilence and a country at war with itself: the Trump presidency is over....

The comments contrasted with millions on the streets chanting “I can’t breathe”, after the dying words uttered by Floyd and Eric Garner, who was killed during a police chokehold arrest attempt in New York in 2014, as well as other victims of police killings.

The president’s remarks also flew in the face of the fresh surge of the Black Lives Matter movement, with the slogan emblazoned on clothing, banners and entire city streets.

Trump offered several equivocal answers on sensitive issues in a time of exceptional national tumult, with the coronavirus pandemic, the resulting economic nosedive and the blight of police brutality all falling disproportionately on black Americans.

Trump has also come under heavy fire for announcing on Thursday, two days after George Floyd’s funeral and a day after his brother testified tearfully to Congress about racism in policing, that he will resume election rallying with an event on 19 June in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the scene of one of the worst race massacres in US history, in 1921.

In the Fox interview, Trump said the choice of Juneteenth for a partisan rally was not specific, but “the fact that I’m having a rally on that day, you can really think about that very positively as a celebration because a rally, to me, is celebration.”

A fresh wave of protests is expected that day in many cities and critics have accused him of “racially motivated trolling” and timing akin to “blasphemy”.

Senator Kamala Harris of California remarked on Twitter on the implications, calling the move a “welcome home party” for white supremacists.

This week the president has refused outright to consider removing the names of US military bases honoring Confederate leaders from the civil war. And he has spoken up before in defense of Confederate monuments, including after defending white supremacists who rallied to protect one amid violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

In Friday’s Fox interview, Trump also said: “I think I’ve done more for the black community than any other president, and let’s take a pass on Abraham Lincoln because he did good, although it’s always questionable, you know, in other words, the end result.”

It was not clear if “end result” was referring to Lincoln’s assassination. Faulkner, who is black, interjected to say of Lincoln: “Well, we are free, Mr President, so he did pretty well.”

Trump has previously claimed that “nobody has ever done for the black community what President Trump has done”, which factcheckers rate as patently false....

Update Re: BLM March to Entrance of KKK National Director HQ

BLM Protesters Troop Through 'America's Most Racist Town':
Demonstrators March to Entrance of KKK National Director Thomas Robb's Private Arkansas Compound as Armed Residents Watch Them File Past

  • Black Lives Matter protesters traveled to Zinc, Arkansas, on Sunday to demonstrate about social justice
  • The protesters picked Zinc because it is where Ku Klux Klan national director Thomas Robb has a compound
  • The protesters were met with armed local residents who were there to keep an eye on them
  • Protesters shared pictures of armed men who used their cars to block off the road leading to Robb's home
  • Protesters also shared pictures of people who they identified as members of the League of the South, which the Southern Poverty Law Group says is a neo-Confederate organization
  • The protesters were seen having discussions with local residents during their peaceful demonstration
  • Protesters said that nobody had ever gone to Zinc to have demonstrate and they made 'history' while doing it
Daily Mail UK, 3 AUG 2020

Arkansas Black Lives Matter protesters traveled to Zinc, Arkansas, to march on the Ku Klux Klan's Grand Wizard's hometown and compound Sunday.

The protest comes just four days after a viral video labeled nearby Harrison, Arkansas, as being 'America's Most Racist Town' and the 'Ku Klux Klan's headquarters.'

The KKK's website claims its national headquarters to be in Harrison and that its national director, Thomas Robb, uses at least three post office boxes there.

The Ozarks Hate Watch group posted on Facebook that these men blocked the road leading to Robb's compound

Local Zinc residents were spotted carrying guns while on their porches, watching the protesters Sunday

A local resident is seen armed while watching over the protesters on Sunday. Militia groups were said to have been spotted in the town during the protestsBridge the Gap NWA and also promoted by Ozarks Hate Watch, drawing Black Lives Matters protesters from as far away as Branson and Springfield.

The protesters met at the Harrison Police Department before traveling in a caravan towards Zinc

Along the road to Zinc, the protesters' caravan passed people holding signs that read 'Turn back,' according to photos shared on Ozarks Hate Watch's Facebook page.

Once in Zinc, the group posted pictures of armed men - some in military-style fatigues - standing in front of cars blocking a dirt road to Robb's compound.

'Militia blocking the road to the Klan Compound,' Ozarks Hate Watch's photo caption states, apparently referring to the road that leads to Robb's Zinc home. 'Too bad they didn't realize we had no intention on going to his compound.'

'You're out here in your little neck of the woods where you think you don't have to see the people that you hate,' protester Sonny Cropper told explaining why he and others had traveled to the small town.

'We know that hatred is here and we still don't tolerate it.'

The news station reported that several dozen protesters had descended on the town for what they planned to be a peaceful protest.
'Several' locals were seen congregating at the other end of the town.
Photos from the protest show Zinc locals carrying rifles, standing and sitting on front porches apparently keeping an eye on the protesters and protecting their homes.

Several dozen protesters were said to have gathered to make the trip to Zinc, Arkansas, from neighboring cities and towns

Officers with the Boone County Sheriff's Department kept an eye on the protesters and locals to keep the peace

In addition to carrying guns, the men had used their cars as physical road blocks on the dirt road leading to Robb's compound

Local residents were seen armed while standing on the side of the road at the other end town where the protesters stood

Protesters and armed local residents are seen talking in the middle of the road during Sunday's protest as officers watched

Ozarks Hate Watch's Facebook page say they identified several counter protesters as being members of the League of the South.

The alleged hate group members were said to be seen holding
guns and sitting on folding chairs along the road as they watched the protesters.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated the League of the South as a hate group with a neo-Confederate ideology.

Officers from the Boone County Sheriff's Department were also on hand watching over the protesters.

'Sheriff Tim Roberson told 40/29 News that his department's 'role' will be to 'that we will keep the peace, that's what one of our duties will be. Obviously if there are violations of the law then those folks that do that will be subject to be arrested.'

He added that 'We will be prepared for that if anything bad does happen.'

Among the armed locals watching the protesters Sunday was Zinc resident Kenny Devore who said of them: 'I think if they want to start trouble they should do it in their own town. We didn't ask for 'em, we ain't never done nothing to them. And I don't really see what the reason is for them being here.'

He added that locals 'just want them to get done and go away.'

There were no reports of any violence during the protest, although Ozark Hate Watch wrote on Facebook that there was a shoving match between a protester and someone they identified as a 'member of the 'Press,'' who had 'decided to push a protestor. We kept things cool tho.'

On Sunday night, after the protesters left Zinc 'All safe and secure,' Ozark Hate Watch member said that the protest had taken two months to plan amongst different activist groups.

They said that despite claims, 'our plan did not involve setting one foot on Lead Hill Road or making advances toward Tom Robb's property. We kept it close to the chest to give ourselves a tactical advantage for sake of security.'

'What happened in zinc today was history,' Aaron Clarke said in a Facebook Live video. He added that the group was not run out of town 'with their tails tucked between their legs.'

'We went down there and nobody's been down there, nobody's ever protested in that community. ... We literally went and threw a barbecue in the KKK's backyard.'

'We came down there to bridge the gap...what we did was we went into the community that has basically operated by the Ku Klux Klan and we extended our hand. We came down there with food for anybody who wanted food, they were able to get food,' Clarke said.

He added that they didn't go 'all the way down the dirt road' leading to Robb's compound, because 'it was very clear that if the road was crowded, it could turn a potential peaceful protest into a violent protest. We didn't want things to get violent.'

Clarke added that the reason for the protesters going to Zinc - and eventually returning, hopefully the 'numbers will be bigger' - was to say that 'you do need to be held accountable' and to put the spotlight on the town.
