Aussie mum Lisa Cunningham faces execution in America

If Lisa Cunningham is found guilty of murder, she would be marched to the “death chamber”, strapped to a bed, drugged and eventually suffocated to death.

The Adelaide-born mother of six, is currently inside the maximum-security wing at Estrella Women’s Jail in Arizona — one of the toughest in the state — facing death by lethal injection.

Cunningham is charged with the murder of her seven-year-old stepdaughter, Sanaa who suffered from acute schizophrenia.

If found guilty, she would be marched through an iron gate, through to the holding cells, to what is often referred to as “the death chamber” where she will be executed, Sunday Night reporter Matt Doran revealed during an exclusive interview with Cunningham.

Inside the chamber. or Housing Unit Nine, you will find murderers, rapists, paedophiles and serial killers.

Cunningham’s lawyer Eric Kessler described what would happen if the Australian mother was found guilty.

“The prisoner is laid out on a bed, with mechanical arms supporting her or him. They’re strapped down, and then the drugs are administered,” Mr Kessler told Sunday Night.

“Usually the first drug administered, at least historically, has been done so for the purpose of putting the inmate to sleep, just in a deep sleep.

“And then subsequent drugs are administered to actually stop the inmate from breathing and the inmate essentially suffocates.”

She is not on death row yet but but if found guilty, this is where she could end up.

Prosecutors allege Cunningham and her husband, Germayne, a former detective, are responsible for the cruel neglect and abuse of Germayne’s daughter — Cunningham’s stepdaughter — and lawyer Bill Montgomery wants them executed.

The pair was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

According to prosecutors, Sanaa, 7, was placed in a straight-jacket, restrained with zip ties and handcuffs and neglected to the point where serious wounds, including a bone-deep cut on her foot, were not properly treated.

But Cunningham’s defence says Sanaa was dangerously schizophrenic, she was never zip tied and most importantly, there was never any crime.

I can never stop hoping that. That would kill me. That would be worse than any injection — never seeing them again,” she told Sunday Night.

Cunningham said the prospect of the death penalty is “illogical”, having previously said authorities ignored their cries for help.

“But do I think illogical things happen? Absolutely. It is surreal. I mean, it’s shocking,” she said.

Cunningham’s lawyer has tried 20 death penalty cases and says he’s never seen a worse travesty of justice in his career.

“Lisa is not a criminal. She’s a loving mum. Australians should be horrified,” Mr Kessler said.
