‘House of Horrors’ Couple ‘Said Goodbye and Told Friends They Were Leaving Town’ >Just Hours Before Their 13 Children Were Found Shackled, Starving and Lying in Their Own Feces

  • David and Louise Turpin were reportedly leaving their home in Perris, California shortly before arrest
  • Friends claim they had visited to 'say their goodbyes' on Saturday, the day before police intervened
  • David Turpin's parents claim that the children had looked 'happy and healthy' when they visited six years ago
  • Current owners of Turpins' old Texas homes claim both of them had been left in complete squalor
  • They took photos of scratch marks on the back of doors and the carpet covered in dirt and filth
  • Turpins were charged with starving and torturing their 13 children - aged 2 to 29 - in their home
  • The Turpin siblings were rescued Sunday after a 17-year-old girl escaped through a window and called 911
Daily Mail UK, 18 Jan 2018.

The California couple who held their 13 starving children captive in their 'filthy' Perris home, were 'getting ready to leave town,' according to their friends.

David Allen Turpin, 57, and his wife Louise Anna Turpin, 49, are due to appear in court today after police rescued their children, some of whom were chained to furniture and lying in their own feces, on Sunday.

The alarm was raised by one of their daughters, aged 17, who escaped through a window and managed to call 911 on a deactivated mobile phone, after which police arrived at the property to find her 12 siblings, aged two to 29.

On the eve of their arrest, the Turpins met up with a friend in order to 'say their goodbyes' as they were leaving Perris

Parents David Allen Turpin, 57, and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, have been arrested for allegedly torturing and keeping their 13 biological children - ranging from 2 to 29 years of age - captive in their Perris, California home

On the eve of their arrest for holding their 13 children captive, David and Louise Turpin met up with a friend in order to 'say their goodbyes' as they were leaving Perris, California

'I saw them about 7 or 8pm on Saturday,' the friend told the news website.
'They didn't say where or when they were going.
'I couldn't believe it when I saw their pictures on the TV two nights later.'

The sheriffs who rescued the Turpin brood on Sunday has revealed that the house had human excrement 'everywhere', with some of the children left lying in their own feces.

‘The smell was terrible,’ Deputy Mike Vasquez of the Riverside Sheriff's Office said. ‘Feces and urine everywhere.
‘It’s what happens when people are chained up – there’s nowhere else to go to the restroom.’

The report from the sheriffs come as the current owners of the two Texas homes where the Turpins once lived claim to have found scratch marks on doors, as well as closets that may have been used to keep the siblings.

David and Louise Turpin had lived in a home in Fort Worth, Texas from around 1992 to 1999 before they lost it in a foreclosure.

The owners who moved in after them claim the home was left in complete squalor.
They say they found scratch marks on the back of doors and that the carpet was covered in disgusting dirt stains and filth.

The people who moved into David and Louise Turpin's home in Fort Worth, Texas in 1999 took photos of the filthy carpets caked in dirt

The people who bought the Fort Worth home initially thought scratch marks on doors were caused by animals, but now believe it could be something more sinister following the arrest of the parents

They took photos of the dirt covered floor, walls and doors.

The Turpin family then moved to Rio Vista, south of Fort Worth, where they lived for the next decade.

The current owner of the Rio Vista home, who didn't want to be identified, said that she found unusual vents in the master bedroom closet when she moved in after the Turpins left in 2010.

'There are two vents in the closet and they are covered up now,' she said.
She believes the couple's children may have been locked in there.

The Turpins lived in Rio Vista from around 1999 to 2010 when they relocated to California. Louise gave birth to at least one child, who is now aged two, after moving to California.

'She never allowed her children to go outside and play. They home schooled every one of them and one day they just up and left,' the woman said.

She described the Turpins as hoarders and said they left everything when the suddenly moved. They had so many belongings in the home it was difficult to walk around.

Neighbors have also revealed the children were not allowed to tell people their names and described the home in Rio Vista as a 'religious compound'.

Yesterday, Louise Turpin's siblings spoke of how they had not had contact with her for years and she refused to come to their parents' funerals.

Her husband on the other hand, appears to have had a closer relationship with his parents, and his mother Betty Turpin revealed they stayed with the family six years ago.

Turpin and her husband James Turpin of Princeton, West Virginia visited her son's family for five days at their previous home in Murrieta, California.
The grandparents of the 13 starved and tortured children say their son's family looked happy and health, and praised the behaviour of the brood.

A Daring Escape: How the California Horror House was Discovered

The disturbing details emerged after the Turpins were charged with torturing and keeping their 13 biological children - ranging from 2 to 29 years of age - captive in their Perris, California home.

The children were rescued by police on Sunday after the couple's 17-year-old daughter escaped through a window and called police saying her siblings were being chained up inside the home.
Police hailed the teenager a hero for her daring escape.

The girl, who was so malnourished officers initially believed she was only 10, managed to escape through a window and call 911 with a deactivated cell phone she had found in the home. When officers interviewed the girl, she provided photos of the conditions and abuse suffered by her and the rest of her siblings.

Authorities found at least three of the Turpin children - aged 2 to 29 - shackled to their beds and furniture with chains and padlocks in a dark, foul-smelling room inside the family home.

The victims, including six children and seven adults, were 'malnourished and very dirty'. It is not clear how long some of them were chained, padlocked and shackled before they were discovered.

'We do need to acknowledge the courage of that young girl who escaped,' Riverside County sheriff's Capt. Greg Fellows said on Tuesday.

Police confirmed that all 13 victims are the biological children of David and Louise Turpin. They were both arrested and charged with nine counts of torture and 10 of child endangerment. They are being held on $9million bail pending a court appearance.

The 17-year-old who finally broke free thought her parents would kill her if they caught her trying to escape.

'In her mind, she was risking her life,' a source told the paper, describing the teen as 'so intelligent' despite alleged limited access to the outside world during her childhood.

Police said the 17-year-old girl bravely managed to escape through a window of the home and notify authorities. She told police she was scared her parents would kill her if they caught her escaping, according to the Mirror

'I Would Call That Torture': All 13 Malnouruished Siblings Undergo Treatment

The malnourished siblings, who were taken to hospital still dressed in their pajamas, continue to undergo treatment. Child's services will now seek a court order to have oversight over the 13 children, including those over the age of 18.

Police confirmed that both David and Louise Turpin were religious but were unable to say if that played a role in holding their children captive.

While still early in the investigation, police said there were no signs that any of the siblings were sexually abused or that the parents were suffering from mental illness.

The sheriff's captain said the conditions were horrific and amounted to torture. It wasn't yet clear how long they had been held in such conditions in the filthy home but it appeared to have been a 'prolonged' period.
'If you can imagine being a 10-year-old and being chained to a bed ... I would call that torture,' he said.

He added that Louise seemed 'perplexed' about why police came to their home, but it was unclear how the children's father reacted.

Deputies had never been called to the home and neither had social service workers.

Corona Regional Medical Center CEO Mark Uffer said his facility is treating seven of the adult children.

'It's hard to think of them as adults, they are so small,' Uffer said, adding that they clearly malnourished but stable and very friendly.

'I believe they are hopeful life will get better for them after this event.'

A nearby pizza shop worker said he would serve Louise regularly, having no idea that she had starving children at home.

“Louise was in here every other day,” Matthew Alex Padilla, 20, told the Telegraph. “Sometimes with her husband, and a few times with a little girl, but never more than one.

'We knew each other, and would chat - she was normal, if maybe a bit reserved. I had no idea she had 13 children, because she’d only ever order a slice of pepperoni, or a chicken club sandwich with no tomato.'

Louise Turpin's sister, Elizabeth Jane Flores, now aged 41, said she lived with the couple in Texas briefly more than 20 years ago. Flores said her brother-in-law David often made her feel uncomfortable.

'If I was to get in the shower, he would come in while I was in there and watch me - it was like a joke,' Flores told Good Morning America on Wednesday. 'He never touched me or anything. I was young, I was scared. I was in Texas where I knew nobody. I was treated like one of the kids, I had rules.'

Flores said Louise and David ran a strict household but at the time she didn't see any signs of abuse.

Her other sister, Teresa Robinette, told NBC's Today that the mother-of-13 would laugh off the fact that her children were so skinny when family commented on it.

'I always made comments to Louise, when I did talk to her about, 'Gosh they're so skinny', and she would laugh it off saying 'Well, David's so tall and lanky. They're going to be like him',' Robinette said.

'(The children) weren't allowed to date, or they didn't have a social life,' she said. 'They weren't allowed to watch TV. They weren't allowed to talk on the phone, have friends over, stuff like that. Normal things that kids do.'

Flores told DailyMailTV on Tuesday that she had not seen her sister in 19 years, and while she still kept in touch with her by telephone, Turpin refused to invite her over to her home and never let her speak to her nieces and nephews.

She said their parents had bought tickets to visit the family but Turpin would not give them an address.

When asked why no one in the family thought to report the Turpins to authorities, Flores told GMA that their behavior didn't seem abnormal to them.

'When this happens for 20 years and before the kids are even there, you don't think it's abnormal,' she said. 'If it had been two years ago, we would have thought something is not right. Even before children, they were real private.'

Robinette also echoed that the family had lost touch with Louise several years ago.

'My parents before they died in 2016 begged to see her. Even on their on their deathbed they asked to see her,' Robinette told NBC. 'She didn't even show up to either of their funerals. So we have really no connection with Louise in a long, long time since we were young.'

Disney Trips and Las Vegas Vow Renewals: How Facebook Photos Hid Disturbing Life

The shocking allegations provide a stark contrast to the life shown on David and Louise's joint Facebook page. They appear to have had marriage-renewal ceremonies in Las Vegas by an Elvis impersonator at least three times in 2011, 2013 and 2015.

Their children were present at the ceremonies and are seeing posing for photos in 2015 in matching outfits for the boys and the girls. The 10 girls are all dressed in pink dresses with white tights and white shoes, while the boys are seen in suits with purple ties - and bowl haircuts like their father.

Footage of the ceremony posted online showed the smiling children awkwardly dancing and clicking their fingers behind their parents.

Another ceremony with the same Elvis impersonator in 2013 - prior to their youngest child being born - shows the children wearing the same outfits.

Photographs from 2011 show the couple by themselves, but impersonator Kent Ripley said the children were in attendance that time as well.

'I'm still disturbed. This is a sad day for everybody, especially the children, I mean they were sitting right around here three different times,'

He added on Today: 'Nothing seemed to be unusual apart from the fact there was a lot of them. They were well behaved and smiled a lot'.

Other pictures show the family smiling on several trips to Disneyland, while another shows them wearing Dr Seuss-style shirts, with each child's top emblazoned with 'Thing 1' to 'Thing 13'.

It also features several photos of the youngest child when she was a baby in late 2015. She was often pictured posing with her mother, including in a Snow White costume, inside a Krispy Kreme store and at a lake.

The last public images that appeared on the Facebook page were posted in July 2016.

Speaking to CNN, grandmother Betty Turpin said the parents made the children dress alike for safety reasons. She describes how the children would line up according to age and the mother and father would walk in front and back of the line.

'They were very protective of the kids. This is a highly respectable family.'

Plagued by Years of Debt and Bankruptcy

The Turpins were believed to have been dogged by debt and filed for bankruptcy twice - once in Texas and again in 2011 after moving to California.

They were between $100,000 and $500,000 in debt when they filed for bankruptcy in August 2011. At the time of the filing, David Turpin was earning a $140,000 salary as an engineer at defense firm Northrop Grumman where he had been working for eight months. His wife was listed as a stay-at-home mom.

Records show the large family's expenses exceed Turpin's pay by just over $1,000 a month. He previously worked for Lockheed Martin but left the job in 2010.

The Turpins lived in Murrieta first before purchasing their current four-bedroom home in Perris in August 2014 for $351,000.

Their house in Perris is also the address of Sandcastle Day School - a private school registered in 2014-15 so David Turpin could home-school six of his children. In the 2016-17 school year, it had an enrollment of six students - one each in the fifth, sixth, eighth, ninth, 10th and 12th grades. As a private school, there are no laws that require it to be inspected.

DISNEY-OBSESSED PARENTS ARRESTED FOR IMPRISONING 13 CHILDREN

The parents accused of starving and keeping their 13 children chained up inside their home had an obsession with Disneyland, according to the multiple family trips they took to the theme park and their 'DSLAND' car license plates.

David Allen Turpin, 57, and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, were both arrested at their home in Perris, California on Sunday after their 17-year-old daughter managed to escape and call 911.

But the shocking allegations made against David and Louise are in stark contrast to the life they publicly portrayed on their joint Facebook page.

David and Louise are pictured above smiling with their children and Disney Princess Jasmine. The photo was posted in 2012

Photos posted on Facebook between 2010 and 2012 show that the couple took their children to Disneyland on at least two separate occasions.

David and Louise are pictured smiling with their children in front of the theme park's iconic castle and posing with Disney characters, including Mickey Mouse, Princess Jasmine and Winnie the Pooh's Eeyore.
Just like all of their family photos, the children are pictured wearing matching outfits.

Some of the younger children wore the same Disney-themed outfits on both family trips to the theme park. The trips occurred prior to the birth of their youngest daughter, who is now aged two.

Meanwhile, two of the four cars parked outside the family's home in Perris when they were arrested also appear to have licence plates linked to Disneyland.

One of the plates on a Volkswagen Beetle reads 'DSLAND'.

The other, which is also on Volkswagen, says 'DL4EVER'. There has been speculation that the second plate could also mean David and Louise forever.

Just so disgusting, those poor kids and some who are considered adults now will never have their heads on straight. Only prayers and the good Lord's grace can bring them through the turmoil of torture they've been through.

I agree Tarfoot, but I have a feeling that there may be worse to come out.... Here is the clue:

Louise Turpin's sister, Elizabeth Jane Flores, now aged 41, said she lived with the couple in Texas briefly more than 20 years ago.
Flores said her brother-in-law David often made her feel uncomfortable.

"If I was to get in the shower, he would come in while I was in there and watch me"

& The children were given food only once a day and only allowed to bathe a few times a year.

Update in my next post...

Daily Mail UK, 22 Jan 2018.
The former college classmate to one of the elder sons victimized in the California House of Horrors has described into harrowing detail what she remembers about him.

The woman, Angie Parra, remembered sighting the unnamed adult son a number of times while the two were enrolled in the same music course at Mt. San Jacinto College in Menifee Valley years ago.

Parra recalled he had a 'sadness in his face and eyes' at the time, while speaking in a phone interview with NBC Los Angeles.

'He never really wanted to make eye contact with anyone,' Parra said of her 'sweet but odd' colleague who 'wore the same clothes all semester.'

During one of their school banquets, the woman said the son was noticeably hungry and gaunt in appearance.

She said he gorged on several servings of food that were brought in to share with the class.

'He stood by the table and sat down with his plate and literally just ate plate after plate after plate,' Parra said of the man, who sat isolated while at the potluck.

'Ill never forget this... he was famished,' Parra added in the heartbreaking interview.

Louise, 49, and David Turpin, 57, were charged with 75 counts including torture, false imprisonment, child abuse and abuse of dependent adults. The couple, pictured during their arraignment Thursday, pleaded not guilty to all charges

The Riverside District Attorney's office revealed last week that the children, aged two to 29, were found tortured, starved and shackled inside the filthy house under poor supervision of parents David, 57, and Louise Turpin, 49.

The Turpin couple pleaded not guilty Thursday afternoon to a total of 75 charges.

Charges stemmed from torture, false imprisonment, child abuse and abuse of dependent adults.

Mr Turpin has been accused of performing lewd acts on a minor, which he also pleaded not guilty to.

Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said the allegations of torture and abuse began back in 2010 at the couple's former Texas residence.

Investigation revealed the children had only been allowed to eat once a day and bathe a few times a year. They were forced to sleep during the day and keep awake at night.

The child victims were allegedly 'hogtied' to beds and prevented from playing with toys or taking part in regular activities.

When one of the kids who was tied up released themselves, the parents were said to have then shackled the child with chains and padlocks.

They only allowed the children to write in journals for a hobby - which will be used as evidence in the case.

It was newly revealed that the Turpin couple were even trying to have another child so they could land their own reality TV show similar to Kate Plus 8.

Louise half brother, Billy Lambert, told Sunday People having a 14th child would make for 'perfect TV'.

Louise half brother, Billy Lambert (pictured), and Louise's younger sister, Teresa Robinette, shared more details of the twisted life of their sister and her husband in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com

Siblings: Teresa Robinette and Billy Lambert (pictured) gave details of the twisted life of their older sister Louise Turpin. Lambert, 30, Louise's half-brother, was the last to speak to her before her arrest

Lambert said of Louise's wish to become famous: 'It is the reason they moved to California to be nearer to Hollywood.'

While speaking with DailyMail.com, Lambert added that he only learned weeks ago the pair were planning for another baby to add to the bunch.

Police raided the couple's four-bedroom house in Perris, California, and found many of the malnourished children shackled to their beds by chains, living in unimaginable filth...

I asked her why on earth they wanted more children and she said about wanting a reality TV show.'They thought it would make them millions and household names. They didn’t care about the kids – it was all about them.'
Lambert and Louise's younger sister, Teresa Robinette, told DailyMail.com in the joint interview she believes to pair deserve to be tortured in prison for the rest of their lives.

'I hope they suffer as much, if not more, than those kids suffered,' Robinette said.

'I hope they torture my sister for the rest of her life.'

Riverside County District Attorney alleged that the oldest child, a 29-year-old woman weighed just 82 lbs, and the 17-year-old who managed to escape and raise the alarm was initially mistaken for a 10-year-old

Prosecutors said the 17-year-old girl that escaped 'had been working on a plan with her siblings to escape this abuse for more than two years'

Robinette also revealed she no longer considers sister Louise one of her family members.
'She is off my family tree, she is dead to me. I couldn't care less about speaking to Louise ever again.'

While Lambert added: 'I think they should get life. That's not just spur-of-the-moment anger, I'm not changing that view.'

If convicted on the charges, the Turpin couple could face 94 years to life behind bars.

They are each being held on $13 million bail and set to appear in court next February 23.

The minor and adult children are currently recovering at two separate hospitals in California.

  • Cops are reportedly considering using cadaver dogs to determine if there are remains of any more children at the house of horrors
  • DNA testing may be ordered to confirm that the Turpin children are related
  • The 13 continue to recover in area hospitals and experts say some of the children didn't even know what a police officer was
  • David Turpin, 56, and Louise Turpin, 49, have pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of torture, child abuse, dependent adult abuse and false imprisonment
Daily Mail UK, 22 Jan 2018.

Homicide detectives are considering sending cadaver dogs into the David and Louise's house of horrors, according to a new report.

Riverside County Sheriff's Homicide Detectives want to see if there were other children who might not have survived, Syndicated news show Crime Watch Daily reports.

Citing sources familiar with the investigation, the show is also reporting that the detectives may want to order DNA testing on the 13 Turpin siblings, seven adults and six children to confirm that they are related. This information was not confirmed by the Sheriff's Department.

Those 13 siblings, recovering in local hospitals, are facing a long road to recovery.

Since arresting the Turpins earlier this week, authorities said they have learned the children were confined to the house, chained to furniture, starved and often deprived the use of a toilet. Some of the children were so detached they didn't understand the concept of a police officer or medicine.

Riverside County Sheriff's Deputies searching the home of the Turpin family get some fresh air

Cadaver dogs could be brought in to search the premises for other siblings of the 13 Turpin children

'You don't need to learn what a police officer is from going to school, you learn that from just being out in the world,' said Patricia Costales, chief executive of The Guidance Center, a Long Beach, California-based nonprofit that provides mental health therapy to thousands of children.

'To not even know something like that really speaks to how incredibly controlled their environment was. They're going to experience a culture shock even apart from the trauma they have undergone,' said Costales, a licensed clinical social worker and therapist who has treated kidnap victims, some held for years.

The Turpin siblings will likely need years of therapy, psychological experts said, adding that if possible it would be best to keep them together.

The youngest should have the easiest road to recovery, Costales said, but added she is optimistic that over time all could eventually learn to lead relatively normal lives.

'Their brains are still adapting, they're still forming, they're still developing their understanding of the world,' she said of the younger children. 'But someone who has experienced these things for 20-some years of their life will have a lot of learning to do about what relationships are like, what the world is like, how they're supposed to be treated.'

Even being separated from their parents, who are now in jail on torture, child abuse and other charges, could be unsettling initially to some of the children, said Jessica Borelli, a clinical psychologist and professor of psychology and social behavior at University of California, Irvine.

'When we come into this world, our attachment figures are our primary sources of safety and security, no matter how abusive they are,' she said.

'That impulse or that draw to be back with the people who are supposed to keep you safe is incredibly strong, and that is what has to be overridden to get out of an abusive situation.'

Police were summoned to the Turpin home in Perris, a city of about 70,000 people 60 miles southeast of Los Angeles, on Sunday after the couple's 17-year-old daughter jumped out of a window and called 911. She had planned the escape for two years and fled with a sibling who became too scared and turned back, Riverside County authorities said.

The fact that she carried out such a courageous act, Borelli said, shows she could play a leadership role in helping her siblings recover.

'To me, that is a sign she has something inside of her that is really healthy,' Borelli said. 'One of the things that happens with really prolonged abuse like this is the instincts about self-protection and the desire to protect oneself are totally disrupted - but she has it. So, I think she might be someone who can help.'

When deputies arrived at the home they found a 22-year-old chained to a bed. The house reeked of human waste and evidence of starvation was obvious, with the oldest sibling, a 29-year-old woman, weighing only 82 pounds, said Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin.

The children were tethered to beds with chains and padlocks as punishment and allowed to do little but write in journals, authorities said.

David Turpin, 56, and Louise Turpin, 49, have pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of torture, child abuse, dependent adult abuse and false imprisonment dating to 2010, when the family moved to California from outside Fort Worth, Texas.

David Turpin also pleaded not guilty to performing a lewd act on a child under age 14.

They will be back in court on February 23.

California House of Horrors: Turpin Parents Jailed For at Least 25 Years Over Child Abuse

The plight of the Turpin siblings, who were locked away for years, shackled, and starved, shocked the world

Daily Mirror UK, 20 APR 2019.

Turpin thinks its amusing & smirks

A couple who beat, starved and held 12 of their children captive hidden away in a 'house of horrors' have been jailed for 25 years to life.

The Turpin children's plight shocked the world, after investigators revealed their brood had been secreted away in their filthy home for so long some didn't even know what medication was.

The parents of 13 held their children captive in the darkened, foul-smelling California home for years- sometimes shackling them to their beds.

David Turpin, 57, engineer, and housewife Louise, 50, had managed to cover up their children's miserable living situation for years by "home-schooling" the siblings.

In reality, the couple had subjected their children to horrific abuse - sometimes chaining them up for one to two months and only freeing them to brush their teeth or use the bathroom.

The couple had earlier pleaded guilty to 14 charges each of torture, dependent adult abuse, child endangerment and false imprisonment in their home.

Their disturbing ordeal finally came to light last January when one of the daughters, who was 17 at the time, managed to escape their home in Perris.

She used a mobile phone taken from the house to call police.

When officers arrived, the girl, who initially was thought to be a child because she was so emaciated, said and some of them were chained, investigators said.

When authorities entered the house, they found the girls' 12 siblings, whose ages ranged between two and 29 years old, being held in "dark and foul-smelling surroundings”

Some of them were found bound to their beds and furniture by chains and padlocks, and many of the children told police that they were “starving.”

Prosecutors said the children were only given one meal a day and allowed to shower once a year.

Their parents would bake pies and not let their hungry children eat them, and would buy toys but forbid the children from opening or playing with them.

The Turpins cried as their children addressed the courtroom in the US today.

"My parents took my whole life from me, now I’m taking my life back," one of the couple's daughters said.

“Life may have been bad, but it made me strong. I saw my dad change my mum, they almost changed me. I’m a fighter. I’m strong.”

An adult son said he still loves his parents, but recounted years of horrific abuse.

"I cannot describe in words what me and my siblings went through," he said in a statement.

"Sometimes, I still have nightmares about what happened, like my sibling being chained up and beaten.

"I love my parents and have forgiven them for all of the things that they have done to us."

"I have learned so much and become very independent.

"I live in an apartment and go to a nearby college. I am getting a bachelor's degree in software engineering, and after I get my bachelor's degree I'm going to get a job as a software engineer and go to school part-time to get my master's degree."

He also read out a statement on behalf of one of his sisters: "I love both of my parents so much.

Although it may not have been the best way of raising us, I'm glad that they did, because it made me the person I am today.

I just want to thank them for teaching me about God and faith. I hope they never lose their faith."

"I pray often for them. I am doing well. I'm going to college full time. I have an apartment ...

We are not supposed to necessarily understand God's will. But we are only to follow and to trust in Him."

David Turpin said in a statement to the judge: "I never intended for any harm to come to my children. I'm sorry if I’ve done anything to cause them harm... I love my children and believe my children love me. ...I hope the very best for my children in the future."

Louise Turpin said in court: "I'm sorry for everything I've done to hurt my children. I love my children so much... I look forward to the day I can see them, hug them, and tell them I'm sorry."

After the couple were arrested last year the siblings were taken into protective custody.

They were found to be suffering from malnourishment, muscle wasting, stunted growth and other signs of severe abuse.

Prosecutors said the victims had been deprived of food, basic hygiene and medical care.

It was also claimed the children were harshly punished for trivial reasons, such as wasting water by washing their hands above the wrists.

International fascination with the Turpin children's plight intensified when bizarre photographs of the siblings emerged.

In the photos, they were often dressed identically, and appeared exceedingly pale due to spending much of their young lives trapped indoors.

Yesterday, details of the 911 call made by the daughter who had managed to escape emerged.

In it, she told the operator:

"My parents are abusive.

"My two little sisters right now are chained up right now... they're chained up to their bed."

Jordan also revealed that she and her 12 other siblings lived in filth and that she had not bathed in about a year.

The teen told the 911 operator that none of the siblings attended school.

"We don't do school," she can be heard saying. "Our mother tells people we're home schooled... she has a fake private school set up but we don't really do school.

"I haven't finished first grade and I'm 17."

The deeply religious Turpins were said to have made their children memorise Bible scripture as part of their 'home schooling'.

The eldest of the Turpin siblings - a 29-year-old woman - weighed only 82 pounds.

According to police, the Turpin siblings never ate breakfast and would only eat peanut butter, bologna, a frozen burrito or chips for lunch and dinner.

The siblings have a long road to recovery ahead of them.

Their representative this February told a court that the seven adult children were healthy and moving on with their lives.
