Nine Anti-KKK Protesters Arrested After Violent Clash With Police at 'Pro-White' Rally in Georgia
A 'white power' rally in Georgia on Saturday turned violent as counter-protesters clashed with police who attempted to block them at the popular Stone Mountain park. At least nine people were arrested after they allegedly fought with police in an attempt to attend the Rock Stone Mountain rally in the Yellow Daisy lot at the DeKalb County park (AJC). A group of about 300 counter-protesters could be heard chanting, 'Hey hey, ho ho, the KKK has got to go' and 'Black Lives Matter' as they wanted to protest the group of about 30 'pro-white' rally participants. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/...1436357155.jpg A 'white power' rally in Georgia on Saturday turned violent as counter-protesters clashed with police who attempted to block them http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/...1436473015.jpg A group of about 300 counter-protesters could be heard chanting, 'Hey hey, ho ho, the KKK has got to go' and 'Black Lives Matter' as they wanted to protest the group of about 30 'pro-white' rally participants According to the AJC, efforts to reach the 'white power' demonstrators by the groups who opposed their views turned chaotic as they had to first face off with authorities who were blocking a road at the park. When police turned them away, the counter-protesters tried to reach the 'white power' group by taking a wooded trail. 'We're trying to get to where we can protest them,' Craig Clark told the AJC. Once they reached a spot where they spotted Confederate flags, police stopped them from entering. At this point, that's when the exchange erupted in violence as the counter-protesters threw rocks and fireworks toward the barricades and emptied trash cans, the AJC reported. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/...1436481944.jpg At least nine people were arrested after they allegedly fought with police in an attempt to attend the Rock Stone Mountain rally in the Yellow Daisy lot at the DeKalb County park http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/...1436505572.jpg According to the AJC, efforts to reach the 'white power' demonstrators by the groups who opposed their views turned chaotic as they had to first face off with authorities who were blocking a road at the park http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/...1436493703.jpg An unidentified man (above right) wearing a confederate hat was attacked by counter-protesters To keep the groups apart, officers in riot gear encircled the Rock Stone Mountain rally participants. Officials said that counter protesters fought with police who were trying to prevent them from getting close to the 'pro-white' rally, which is what led to people being arrested as they refused to take their masks off, the AJC reported. AP reported that a man wearing a confederate hat was attacked by counter-protesters and appeared to suffer minor injuries. John Bankhead, a spokesman for the Stone Mountain Park Police said that one protester was spotted spraying pepper spray at a Georgia State Patrol officer as others engaged in 'physical skirmishes with law enforcement dressed in riot gear.' Park officials concerned about safety closed down attractions such as the cable car, amusement center and laser show by midday, though the park itself remained open. Organizers of the Rock Stone Mountain expected as many as 2,000 extremists to attend, but the numbers of police and the park's decision to stop them from climbing the mountain lowered the numbers, the AJC reported. The event coincided with Confederate Memorial Day weekend, which is a state holiday in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia that honors or remembers Confederate soldiers who died or were wounded during the American Civil War. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/...1436487790.jpg The protesters above hold signs behind one man playing a guitar in the popular Stone Mountain park http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/...1436513425.jpg Park officials concerned about safety closed down attractions such as the cable car, amusement center and laser show by midday, though the park itself remained open . |
