The former leader claims the government is trying to censor him. On Sunday, he criticised the ban at another political rally in the city of Rawalpindi.

"What crime has Imran Khan committed? I will never accept this gang of thieves," he told his supporters.

Mr Khan later accused the government of blocking access to YouTube halfway through the speech in an effort to prevent people from listening to him live.

Despite being ousted from power in a no-confidence vote earlier this year, Imran Khan continues to count on the support of many Pakistani voters.

Last month, his PTI party stunned rivals by taking control of a crucial provincial assembly in Punjab, defeating the PML-N party in what was expected to be an easy win for them.

Many saw July's by-election victory as a signal of Mr Khan's continued popularity at the ballot box - and a foretaste of what could happen if the early elections that he is seeking were to be held.

Hundreds of people have been arrested and at least six have been killed after the former cricket star and prime minister was arrested yesterday.

Today, he appeared in a makeshift court in a police compound where he was remanded in custody for a further eight days on corruption charges.

'Chaos and Anarchy'

Mr Khan was ousted as PM in April last year and has been campaigning for early elections since then.

General elections are due to be held later this year.

Speaking to the BBC's Newshour, Mr Khan's spokesman, Raoof Hasan, said he expected "the worst" and that the arrest could plunge the country "into chaos and anarchy".

"We're facing multiple crises. There is an economic crisis, there is a political crisis, there is a cost of livelihood crisis and consequently this occasion will be a catharsis for them to step out and I fear a fair amount of violence is going to be back," he said.

A member of Mr Khan's legal team, Raja Mateen, said undue force had been used against him at the court.

"Mr Khan went into the biometric office for the biometrics. The rangers went there, they broke the windows, they hit Mr Khan on the head with a baton," said Mr Mateen.

Mr Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party called on its supporters to protest. In the hours after he was detained, violence was reported from cities including Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar.

On the streets of Islamabad, hundreds of protesters blocked one of the main highways in and out of the capital.

People pulled down street signs and parts of overpasses, lit fires and threw stones. During the hour or so that the BBC was there, no police or authorities were visible.

Protesters said they were angry about Imran Khan's arrest.

"This is absolutely the last straw," said Farida Roedad.

"Let there be anarchy, let there be chaos. If there is no Imran, there's nothing left in Pakistan. No one is there to take over."

Writing on social media, police in Islamabad said five police officers had been injured and 43 protesters arrested.

It said at least 10 people, including six police officers, had been injured in the south-western city of Quetta in clashes between Mr Khan's supporters and security forces - with one protester killed.

A statement from the inspector general of Punjab police said the arrest of Mr Khan had been ordered because he was accused of "corruption and corrupt practices".

The case involves allegations over the allotment of land in the so-called Al-Qadir Trust, which is owned by Mr Khan and his wife, Dawn newspaper reported.

Mr Khan, who is being held at an undisclosed location, denies breaking any law.

In a video message filmed as he travelled to Islamabad - and released by the PTI before his arrest - Mr Khan said he was ready for what lay ahead.

"Come to me with warrants, my lawyers will be there," he said. "If you want to send me to jail, I am prepared for it."

Mr Khan stood surrounded by his lawyers in front of the three Supreme Court judges as they told him that because of the way he had been arrested on Tuesday - inside a court complex, conducting biometric tests - the arrest was invalid.

Footage of his arrest showed paramilitary forces seizing Mr Khan, who was injured in a gun attack last year, and dragging him from inside court premises, before whisking him away in an armoured vehicle.

"Your arrest was invalid so the whole process needs to be backtracked," Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial told Mr Khan. He would now be under the protection of the Supreme Court.

It was then Mr Khan's turn to speak, defiant and indignant at the way he had been arrested.

Why was Imran Khan Arrested?

The former cricketer told the judges he'd been kidnapped from the High Court on Tuesday and "hit with sticks". He was reminded several times by the judges that others had experienced worse treatment.

There was no immediate response from the security forces to the allegation.

His Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party says the cases against him are politically motivated. The arrest enraged his supporters - the past 48 hours have seen widespread violence and rare attacks on state and military facilities.

Seven senior PTI leaders are among those arrested. They include former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who police say "incited violence". In a statement Mr Qureshi denied this and urged supporters to continue with peaceful protests.

Mr Khan has been kept at a police guesthouse in the capital since Tuesday, which was turned into a makeshift court on Wednesday where a judge formally charged him with corruption for the first time in the dozens of cases he faces. He pleaded not guilty.

Conviction would disqualify the former international cricket star - prime minister from 2018-2022 - from standing for office, possibly for life. Elections are due later this year.

Former Pakistani ambassador Maleeha Lodhi told the BBC she thought the court's decision would help to defuse the anger of Mr Khan's supporters.

"The last couple of days have seen extraordinary violence by protesters who are supporters of Imran Khan, who are obviously enraged by the manner in which he was arrested," she said.

"There is still uncertainty, but hopefully the situation will not return to the kind of violent scenes that we have seen."

Although Mr Khan asked repeatedly to be allowed to stay at his home, the court determined that because of the security situation he would have to remain at the police guesthouse. However the judges repeatedly emphasised that he would be allowed to have whoever he chooses as a guest.

When the proceedings finished, Mr Khan sat within the court for 15 minutes taking questions from the media. He said he had not known that people had been killed during the protests or that senior members of his party had been arrested.

He told the BBC that when he was arrested he had been hit on the head and was bleeding and that when those images had circulated around the world the reaction by his supporters was not surprising.

When asked whether he would now ask his supporters to stop violent protests he said that he had already made his statement, saying he had always called for protests to be peaceful.

Supporters of Mr Khan welcomed the court's decision. "Imran Khan's release proves we knew the truth," one man, who had spent the past few days gathered outside the PTI leader's residence in Lahore, told the BBC.

Another said the verdict had "revived our hope in the nation".

Many analysts believe Mr Khan's election win in 2018 happened with the help of the military, which both parties denied. But he later fell out with the powerful army. After a series of defections, and amid mounting economic crisis, he lost his majority in parliament.

Since being ousted less than four years into his term, he has become one of the military's most vocal critics, and analysts say the army's popularity has fallen.

In November 2022, Mr Khan was shot in the leg while leading a protest march. He has accused a senior intelligence officials of carrying out the attack - which the military has strongly denied.

A day before his arrest, the military warned him against making "baseless allegations" after he again accused a senior officer of plotting to kill him.

Observers see the country facing an unprecedented series of crises - given endless political turmoil, the economy on a cliff edge and mounting violence by Islamist militants eroding confidence in the security forces.

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has been sentenced to ten years in prison for leaking state secrets.

Along with one of his party deputies, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Khan was previously found guilty of revealing official secrets. According to Zulfiqar Bukhari, spokesman for Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, the court announced the verdict during a hearing at the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi.

Khan, 71, was previously ousted through a no-confidence vote in parliament in April 2022 and is already serving a three-year prison sentence in a corruption case. He has been in jail since August of last year and claims that the charges are politically motivated.

The sentencing of the cricketer-turned-politician is a part of what is popularly known as the Cipher case and in relation to a diplomatic cable that Khan claims proved his allegations that a conspiracy existed to remove him from power in 2022. The latest development comes just a week ahead of the February 8 parliamentary elections in the country.

Khans' team is likely to appeal against todays' ruling and whilst he won't be on the ballot in next month's elections, he remains a potent political force in Pakistan. This is because of a significant grassroots following combined with an anti-establishment rhetoric.

Recently, Khans' supporters held nationwide rallies across Pakistan, some of which descended into violence, leading to clashes with police. They raised slogans against the caretaker government who they warn has been trying to keep the PTI party out of the upcoming elections.

The sentence is in relation to one of over 150 cases against Khan

The government has cracked down on the party, including reportedly barring them from holding public gatherings, forcibly changing their symbol, and having key candidates disqualified or jailed, according to the Independent.

Pakistans’ independent human rights commission has said there is little chance of a free and fair parliamentary election next month because of "pre-poll rigging." It also expressed concern about authorities rejecting the candidacies of Khan and senior figures from his party.

The Cipher case is just one of over 150 cases against Khan and other charges range from contempt of court to terrorism and inciting violence.

Khan is alleged to have waved the confidential document during a rally after he was removed as premier. He claimed it was proof he was being threatened and ousted by a US conspiracy, executed by the countrys' military and government.

Both Washington and Pakistani officials have denied the claim.

The document in question, the Cipher, has never been made public but was apparently a diplomatic correspondence between the Pakistani ambassador to Washington and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad.

Mr Khan stood surrounded by his lawyers in front of the three Supreme Court judges as they told him that because of the way he had been arrested on Tuesday - inside a court complex, conducting biometric tests - the arrest was invalid. Footage of his arrest showed paramilitary forces seizing Mr Khan, who was injured in a gun attack last year, and dragging him from inside court premises, before whisking him away in an armoured vehicle. "Your arrest was invalid so the whole process needs to be backtracked," Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial told Mr Khan. He would now be under the protection of the Supreme Court. It was then Mr Khan's turn to speak, defiant and indignant at the way he had been arrested. Why was Imran Khan Arrested? The former cricketer told the judges he'd been kidnapped from the High Court on Tuesday and "hit with sticks". He was reminded several times by the judges that others had experienced worse treatment. There was no immediate response from the security forces to the allegation. His Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party says the cases against him are politically motivated. The arrest enraged his supporters - the past 48 hours have seen widespread violence and rare attacks on state and military facilities. Seven senior PTI leaders are among those arrested. They include former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who police say "incited violence". In a statement Mr Qureshi denied this and urged supporters to continue with peaceful protests. Mr Khan has been kept at a police guesthouse in the capital since Tuesday, which was turned into a makeshift court on Wednesday where a judge formally charged him with corruption for the first time in the dozens of cases he faces. He pleaded not guilty. Conviction would disqualify the former international cricket star - prime minister from 2018-2022 - from standing for office, possibly for life. Elections are due later this year. Former Pakistani ambassador Maleeha Lodhi told the BBC she thought the court's decision would help to defuse the anger of Mr Khan's supporters. "The last couple of days have seen extraordinary violence by protesters who are supporters of Imran Khan, who are obviously enraged by the manner in which he was arrested," she said. "There is still uncertainty, but hopefully the situation will not return to the kind of violent scenes that we have seen." Although Mr Khan asked repeatedly to be allowed to stay at his home, the court determined that because of the security situation he would have to remain at the police guesthouse. However the judges repeatedly emphasised that he would be allowed to have whoever he chooses as a guest. When the proceedings finished, Mr Khan sat within the court for 15 minutes taking questions from the media. He said he had not known that people had been killed during the protests or that senior members of his party had been arrested. He told the BBC that when he was arrested he had been hit on the head and was bleeding and that when those images had circulated around the world the reaction by his supporters was not surprising. When asked whether he would now ask his supporters to stop violent protests he said that he had already made his statement, saying he had always called for protests to be peaceful. Supporters of Mr Khan welcomed the court's decision. "Imran Khan's release proves we knew the truth," one man, who had spent the past few days gathered outside the PTI leader's residence in Lahore, told the BBC. Another said the verdict had "revived our hope in the nation". In November 2022, Mr Khan was shot in the leg while leading a protest march. According to Zulfiqar Bukhari, spokesman for Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, the court announced the verdict during a hearing at the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi. Khan, 71, was previously ousted through a no-confidence vote in parliament in April 2022 and is already serving a three-year prison sentence in a corruption case. He has been in jail since August of last year and claims that the charges are politically motivated. The sentencing of the cricketer-turned-politician is a part of what is popularly known as the Cipher case and in relation to a diplomatic cable that Khan claims proved his allegations that a conspiracy existed to remove him from power in 2022. The latest development comes just a week ahead of the February 8 parliamentary elections in the country. Khans' team is likely to appeal against todays' ruling and whilst he won't be on the ballot in next month's elections, he remains a potent political force in Pakistan. This is because of a significant grassroots following combined with an anti-establishment rhetoric. Recently, Khans' supporters held nationwide rallies across Pakistan, some of which descended into violence, leading to clashes with police. They raised slogans against the caretaker government who they warn has been trying to keep the PTI party out of the upcoming elections. The sentence is in relation to one of over 150 cases against Khan The government has cracked down on the party, including reportedly barring them from holding public gatherings, forcibly changing their symbol, and having key candidates disqualified or jailed, according to the Independent. Pakistans’ independent human rights commission has said there is little chance of a free and fair parliamentary election next month because of "pre-poll rigging." It also expressed concern about authorities rejecting the candidacies of Khan and senior figures from his party. The Cipher case is just one of over 150 cases against Khan and other charges range from contempt of court to terrorism and inciting violence. Khan is alleged to have waved the confidential document during a rally after he was removed as premier. He claimed it was proof he was being threatened and ousted by a US conspiracy, executed by the countrys' military and government. Both Washington and Pakistani officials have denied the claim. The document in question, the Cipher, has never been made public but was apparently a diplomatic correspondence between the Pakistani ambassador to Washington and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad.
