Law enforcement swarms Brooklyn Center, deploying teargas and flash bangs to disperse hundreds gathered outside police headquarters

Police have clashed with protesters for a second night in the suburbs of Minneapolis after the officer-involved death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright on Sunday.

Multiple law enforcement agencies swarmed the suburb of Brooklyn Center on Monday, deploying teargas, flash bangs and other non-lethal force to disperse hundreds of people who gathered outside the police headquarters.

The Minnesota governor, Tim Walz, issued a 7pm curfew in the wake of Sunday night’s unrest but the large crowd of protesters defied verbal orders by police to go home. Police fired volleys of teargas, smoke and pepper-balls, initially from behind a newly erected fortified fence, before advancing in formation and pushing the remaining protesters back.

Some protesters responded by launching fireworks towards police as drum beats pounded and people chanted Wright’s name.

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. – The police officer who fatally shot a 20-year-old Black man during a traffic stop may have intended to fire a Taser, the city's police chief said Monday.

The department released dramatic bodycam footage of the incident, which has rocked the Minneapolis suburb miles from where George Floyd was killed during a police arrest last May.

Daunte Wright was shot once and died after the traffic stop Sunday, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said. The body camera footage released during a news conference shows two other officers approaching Wright's car and the officer who fired the shot standing behind them.

As the officer on the driver side of the vehicle began to handcuff Wright, he broke free, a struggle ensued, and Wright jumped back into the driver's seat. An officer threatened to tase him, shouting, "Taser!" at least three times before shooting Wright, then saying, "Oh (expletive), I just shot him."

Ex-Officer Who Shot Daunte Wright Released after Posting $100k Bail on Manslaughter Charge

KIM Potter, the veteran cop who was charged with manslaughter over the Daunte Wright killing, was released from jail on bail on Wednesday.

The Minnesota cop was released from Hennepin County jail around 5.40pm after posting a $100,000 bond, according to jail records.

Potter faces a second-degree manslaughter charge after fatally shooting Wright, 20, during a traffic stop on Sunday.

She was taken into custody at 11.30am local time on Wednesday, and the Washington County Attorney’s Office filed charges the same day.

"With that responsibility comes a great deal of discretion and accountability. We will vigorously prosecute this case and intend to prove that Officer Potter abrogated her responsibility to protect the public when she used her firearm rather than her taser," Imran Ali, Washington County assistant criminal division chief, said.

"Her action caused the unlawful killing of Mr. Wright and she must be held accountable."

The maximum sentence for the charge is a 10-year jail sentence and a $20,000 fine, Minnesota statutes state.

Wright was shot just ten miles from where George Floyd was killed last spring, leading to an outpouring of anger from the community.

Mr. Wright wasn't so innocent as he did have a warrant out for his arrest. The really bad thing in this incident is, how on earth does a 26 yr. veteran police officer confuse a taser with a live pistol when the taser is worn on the opposite side of the pistol. What on earth is going on in this world today is just so, so crazy.
It's a very low, low percentage of cops that are causing a bad situation for all of the others. Being a cop nowadays is the very last thing I'd want to be, but what would this world be without them. This is just my point of view. Please pray for all of our Police Officers all around the world for they do have a very stressful job.
