The property in Chorlton, Greater Manchester, lost almost the entirety of its roof after it caved in during extreme conditions overnight

Emergency crews worked into the night to ensure the area was safe after being called to Stockton Road at around 10:38pm.

The house was unoccupied at the time, they said.

There were no reports of injuries, Greater Manchester Police said.

Firefighters were checking houses on either side of the large three-storey Victorian building, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Photographs from the scene show the crumbled roof and bricks strewn across the front of the property.

Violent thunderstorms swept across the north of England and Scotland last night, causing flash flooding in cities including Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.

At the Manchester house, a stairwell can clearly be seen in images taken by neighbours.

One resident said: “Initially I heard a loud noise that we thought was lightning.

“We looked out of the window and there was what looked like smoke filling the street, made more apparent when it drifted past a street lamp.

“Then there was a flash, and the next thing the whole chimney stack started to move towards the house next door, almost in slow motion at first.

And then the majority of the house just seemed to disappear, and the noise was awful.

“Dust clouded the street and the air was thick with it.

“We ran outside to check if it was an empty house, which it appears to be.

“Fire service were on scene within about 10 minutes and have cordoned off the street.

“They have been assessing damage of neighbouring properties since they arrived and appear to be talking to people on the scene.”

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said the incident was reported to officers at 11.05pm on Tuesday (June 16).

“The house is believed to be empty.

“Nobody was injured.”

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are leading on the incident.”

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 10.38pm one fire engine from Stretford mobilised to a collapsed house on Stockton Road, Manchester.

"The house was unoccupied at the time so there aren't thought to be any persons involved."

In another incident last night, a house on the Wirral, Merseyside, burst into flames after being struck by lightning.

Police officers closed the road in both directions as fire crews put out the blaze and made the property safe.

Images taken at the scene show three fire engines and multiple police cars guarding the house.

Extensive damage has been caused to the roof of the property and an attached garage.

A cordon was put in place around the area at around 8.15pm but fire crews are expected to be working at the scene for the rest of the eveing.

More than 20 firefighters were also last night called to a house in Sheffield that was struck by lightning.
