Russia has put its willingness to play by its own rules on full display with a token withdrawal of some troops exercising in Crimea and the offer of renewed security dialogue with the West, CBC's senior defence and security reporter Murray Brewster writes.
Russia made those gestures after several days of delivering sharp anti-Western rhetoric — and after allied intelligence sources warned again that an invasion could happen as early as today.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky says a potential Russian invasion could begin as early as Feb. 16, in an address calling for nationwide solidarity.
Russia has been building up its forces near Ukraine, with well over 100,000 troops lined along the border and there are reports they have begun moving into "attack positions."
As Jackson Proskow reports, the alarming comments come as allied nations scramble to get personnel out of the country, as little hope remains for a peaceful solution.
