Denver Broncos v Carolina Panthers

Daily Mail UK- SPORTS, 7 February 2016

Super Bowl 50 takes place in San Francisco when the Carolina Panthers face the Denver Broncos.

More than 160 million people worldwide are expected to be captivated by this NFL contest as the Panthers go in search for their first-ever Super Bowl, while Denver seek their third.

LIVE FEED REPORTS...

TIME LINE;

HALF-TIME.....

01:19

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 13 – Second Quarter

Newton finds Devin Funchess with a 40-year screamer. Clock is against the Panthers as Newton trucks it up once more. Olsen can't find a speculative pass towards the sideline. Graham Gano is out on the field as Ron Rivera's side look for the field goal before half-time.

01:07

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 13 – Second Quarter

Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart vaults over for a stunning touchdown

01:06

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 13 – Second Quarter

Sloppy play from Manning as Kony Ealy makes an audacious intercept before setting off on a barnstorming run downfield.

01:02

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 13 – Second Quarter

Six and a half minutes left in this second quarter. CJ Anderson barges past Luke Kuechley for a gain of 37. Not often you seen someone do that.

00:55

Sportsmail’s Peter Carline marvels at Norwood's punt return

So much for that. Jordan Norwood seemed to glide around the Panthers' special teamers there with his 61-yard punt return the longest punt in Super Bowl history. Would he have been caught had Mario Addison not been shoved in the back by Todd Davis?

00:54

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 13 – Second Quarter

McManus sits in the pocket and fires the field goal straight down the middle. Norwood's scorching punt return was the catalyst for that three-pointer. The Broncos may feel they should have capitalised with a touchdown there, but settled for the field goal.

00:51

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 10 – Second Quarter

Stunning run from Jordan Norwood sets up prime attacking platform for Broncos.

00:47

Sportsmail’s Peter Carline has an update

Ominous signs here for the Broncos. Ron Rivera may be out of challenges, but Carolina are hitting their stride. And here's the league MVP.

00:42

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 10 – Second Quarter

Time to draw breath and take stock here at Levi's Stadium. Four minutes into the Second Quarter and it's the Broncos holding a slim three point lead. Play is back underway and Manning's pass in nearly intercepted by Josh Norman.

00:38

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 10 – Second Quarter

Peyton Manning's Broncos raced into an early 10-0 lead before the Panthers comeback

00:35

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 10 – Second Quarter

Touchdown Panthers! Jonathan Stewart vaults his way into the end with a spectacular effort. Now we have a game on our hands. Graham Gano added the extra point to complete an explosive start to the second quarter.

00:28

Carolina Panthers 0 Denver Broncos 10 – Second Quarter

Cam Newton finally decides to pin his ears back and blazes 20 metres downfield to secure 1st. Newton takes off on another run soon after but he's hustled out of bounds by the onrushing Von Miller.

00:23

Carolina Panthers 0 Denver Broncos 10 – First Quarter

Panthers need a good start here but no gain on the first play. Newton finds Brown for first down. That's first quarter finished. Took just short of an hour for that.

00:18

Carolina Panthers 0 Denver Broncos 10 – First Quarter

Silly play from Aqib Talib who is penalised for taunting

00:14

Sportsmail’s Peter Carline has an update from Santa Clara

Astonishing start from Denver, whose defense are carrying off where they left off against the Patriots. Von Miller is a force of nature.
How significant will that injury to Jonathan Stewart be? Cam throws to no-one again. This is not what many expected...

00:13

Cam Newton has had a nervy start at Levi's Stadium

00:11

Carolina Panthers 0 Denver Broncos 10 – First Quarter

Touchdown Broncos! Disastrous for Cam Newton. Vom Miller sacks the Panthers quarterback and then strips the ball before Malik Jackson Jackson pounces on the loose ball in the end zone for the first touchdown of the game. Hugh defence from Miller there.

00:07

Rivera's challenged is ruled out - Panthers lose a time out

Tough call for the Panthers there. Cotchery's catch is ruled as incomplete. Seemed like a tough call there.

00:04

Sportsmail’s Peter Carline has been impressed with the Panthers defence

Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly showing why they are one of the most complete linebacking duo there. But Denver regain momentum after their punt with a solid tackle on Ted Ginn Jr from Kayvon Webster.

00:03

Carolina Panthers 0 Denver Broncos 3 – First Quarter

Second offensive possession for the Panthers coming up.
Newton sends a rocket of a pass downfield but Cotchery fumbles the catch. Panthers coach Ron Rivera has thrown the red flat onto the pitch, however. Rivera is challenging the ruling of an incomplete pass.

23:56

Sportsmail’s Peter Carline on that first Panthers attack

Carolina punt on their opening drive after being behind for the first time during this blistering postseason. Over to The Sheriff...

23:54

Carolina Panthers 0 Denver Broncos 3 – First Quarter

Denver's defense smothers the first Panthers attack of the game.

23:52

Carolina Panthers 0 Denver Broncos 3 – First Quarter

Stewart fights for two but is muscled out of it by the Broncos defense.

23:49

Sportsmail’s Peter Carline has been impressed with Manning's early showing

You heard it here second: Peyton Manning is BACK. Solid opening drive. Wonder how Thomas Davis's arm is.

23:49

Carolina Panthers 0 Denver Broncos 3 – First Quarter

First blood for the Broncos with McManus' field goal. An impressive from Manning. Now, it's Cam Newton's turn to show what he can do.

23:47

Carolina Panthers 0 Denver Broncos 3 – First Quarter

Second, third and fourth for Broncos who take an early lead as Brandon McManus fires over a field goal.

23:44

Broncos looking sharp early on

First run of the game for CJ Anderson who makes seven metres with a strong drive. Denver's offense looking sharp early on here.

23:40

We're underway at Levi's Stadium!

A gain of 18 on first down as Peyton Manning picks out Owen Daniels on the first play. Great start for the Broncos.

Denver Broncos v Carolina Panthers

Daily Mail UK- SPORTS, 7 February 2016

LIVE FEED REPORTS...

The half-time show. Flags, fireworks & people decked out in gold. And Coldplay. Time to work.

TIME LINE...continued;

Sportsmail’s Peter Carline has the final say in San Francisco

Wade Phillips is a genius. Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware are fearsome. Cam Newton has plenty to ponder. Gold ticker tape is flying everywhere.

Peyton Manning is being goaded into saying he'll retire by Tracy Wolfson in the middle of the field. He's having none of it.

"I'll take some time to reflect." "I'm going to drink a lot of Budweiser after this," he adds.

03:23

Carolina Panthers 10 Denver Broncos 24 - FULL-TIME

It really is simple: defense wins championships. The Denver Broncos had the No 1 unit coming into the Super Bowl and Wade Phillips’ once again masterminded a lights out display, suffocating regular season MVP Cam Newton into submission.

In what is expected to be his last game, Peyton Manning joins brother Eli with two rings. At 39, he is the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Quite an achievement for the man they call 'The Sheriff'

Peyton Manning's Broncos are Super Bowl 50 champions

Carolina Panthers 10. Denver Broncos 24 – Fourth Quarter

Less than two minutes to go here and, barring a minor miracle. Peyton Manning and the Broncos look destined to secure Super Bowl 50. Incredible defensive masterclass.

03:07

Carolina Panthers 10 Denver Broncos 22 – Fourth Quarter

It looks like game over! CJ Anderson show great determination to power over from close-range. Huge play from the Broncos' powerful running back who rode three tackles to spin over and score. They'll aim for two to set up a 14-point lead.

03:03

Carolina Panthers 10 Denver Broncos 16 – Fourth Quarter

Another monstrous defensive effort from Denver! Five minutes to go here. It's getting tense down there on the field. Big third down for Carolina but Von Miller gets to Newton again who fumbles and then TJ Ward secure the loose ball on the deck. Denver will look to put this bed now as Manning sends his running back Anderson up the guts of the Panthers twice in quick succession.

02:57

Cam Newton and his team-mates walk off the field after turning the ball over in the fourth quarter

02:56

Sportsmail’s Peter Carline sees a Carolina side losing confidence

Newton goes three and out again. Carolina trudge off the field, shoulders down. Tackles Michael Oher and Mike Remmers look exhausted and who can blame them. Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware are high-energy guys.

02:54

Carolina Panthers 10 Denver Broncos 16 – Fourth Quarter

Time it ticking away here in Santa Clara. Brad Nortman sends a long punt downfield after another fruitless downs from the Panthers. Manning is back out on the field with less then seven minutes remaining...

Carolina Panthers 10 Denver Broncos 16 – Fourth Quarter

Denver are seeking to defend a six-point lead. An intercept and a fumble have blotted Manning's copybook but the Broncos need their veteran quarterback to get his head screwed back on.

02:44

Carolina Panthers 10 Denver Broncos 16 – Fourth Quarter

Ten minutes to go and Graham Gano comes up with a much-needed field goal from 39 yards to trim the Broncos' lead to six points. It's a one score game now.

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 16 – Third Quarter

Three minutes to go here in the third quarter. Panthers needs a big ending to this quarter. Tedd Ginn gains 11 on first down. Newton tries to find Ginn but he can't find him wide on the left. Olsen is then dragged down on the 32 for a gain of seven. It all goes awry again though as Newton is sacked by the twin efforts of Derek Wolfe and Von Miller.

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 16– Third Quarter

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 16

Kony Ealy comes up with his third sack of the game as the Panthers secure a precious turnover. The Panthers defensive end has had a monster game. Manning didn't cover himself in glory there with his indecision at the scrimmage.

02:35

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 16

Peyton Manning is 15 minutes away from Super Bowl glory

02:21

Panthers kicker Graham Gano saw his third-quarter field goal effort come back off the upright

02:20

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 13 – Third Quarter

Broncos defense dominating again. Newton is being swarmed by this Wade Phillips-inspired rush. TJ Ward comes up with an intercept for a pass meant for Ginn. That's the Panthers third turnover of the night.

02:06

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 13 – Third Quarter

Manning hits Sanders with a gain of 25 off the Broncos’ first attacking play. CJ Anderson then makes a gain of two after Manning tries to slip him through a hole. Manning makes it three in a row and finds Sanders again to set up a scoring play for the Broncos.

02:03

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 13 – Third Quarter

Oh, it's getting cagey and tense now. Newton fails to find Greg Olsen on 3rd and 11 with the Panthers opting for a field goal. Gano enters the fray, but his field goal effort comes off the right upright. Another big moment. Broncos hold onto their six-point lead in Santa Clara.

01:57

Carolina Panthers 7 Denver Broncos 13 – Third Quarter

Ginn and Newton combine again as the Panthers continue their march upfield.

We're back underway at Levi's Stadium

01:54

Right that's enough inoffensive pop... we're back underway on the field

Newton has the first shot in the third quarter and he hits Ted Ginn on the run for a 45-yard gain. The longest gain from scrimmage in this contest. Great start from Newton and the Panthers.

It really is simple: defense wins championships. Especially one featuring Von Miller and cohort De Marcus Ware.

The Denver Broncos had the No 1 unit coming into the Super Bowl and Wade Phillips' once again masterminded a lights out display, suffocating regular season MVP Cam Newton into submission.

He was sacked seven times, tying a Super Bowl record and threw an interception as the Broncos picked up their second Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Denver Broncos' Malik Jackson scores a touchdown during the first half of Super Bowl 50 to put his side on their way to victory

In what is expected to be his last game, Peyton Manning joins brother Eli with two rings. At 39, he is the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl - and he looked it.

The Panthers had 500 points during the regular season and steamrollered their way through the play-offs. But they were restricted to 10 points by Miller and Ware, who constantly blitzed and buzzed around Newton. They were not bees, but possessed hornets, swarming on their prey.
Tackles Michael Oher and Mike Remmers were broken men, exhausted in trying to contain the high-energy duo. Behind them, linebacker Danny Trevathan showed up to play with two fumble recoveries.

The first quarter flew by, prompted by a bright start from Denver. Manning made sure there was no repeat of the shambles of New York, leading Denver up the field on a 10 play, 64 yard drive, which took 4:17 off the clock.

McManus put the Broncos ahead, thanks to a 34-yard field goal to continue his perfect streak in the post-season. It was the first time Carolina had been behind in the play-offs.

In his first possession, Newton and the Panthers were forced to punt after Aqib Talib's crunching stop on Olsen.

Jonathan Stewart takes to the air to score a dramatic acrobatic touchdown for the Carolina Panthers

But the Panthers' defense stepped up with Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis showing why they are one of the most complete linebacking duos, forcing the Broncos to punt.

But the Panthers were on the back foot again thanks to Wade Phillips' suffocating defense. So dominant against the New England Patriots a fortnight ago, they continued where they left off.

On third-and-10 from the 15, Miller easily beat right tackle Mike Remmers and leapt into Newton's midriff. About to throw, he stripped the ball out of his right hand, before it bobbed into the end zone. There was Malik Jackson to gleefully smother it, scoring his first career touchdown in the process.

The Panthers are used to being ahead in the first quarter in the playoffs, outscoring opponents 55-7, but here they were 10-0 down.

But the season's MVP came to life in the second quarter showing poise despite Denver's relentless pressure, which resulted in two sacks. Finding Corey Brown and a wide open Greg Olsen for significant gains his runs of 11 and 12 yards put Carolina in the red zone for the first time. Newton threw left to Brown again for a gain of 13 to put the Panthers on the two-yard line.

Jonathan Stewart, back in action after a savage hit from Derek Wolfe, appeared to sail through the sky for a one-yard score, reducing the arrears to 10-7.

With Manning reeling and seemingly unable to get a first down, it was down to the Broncos' special teams to get the team up the field.

Norwood set up McManus' 33-yard field goal with a 61-yard punt return, the longest in Super Bowl history.

On Carolina's 14, Manning was stifled once more. Louis Vasquez was hit with a holding call on fourth-and-one, forcing McManus to do the business.

Newton was stifled as the half dwindled away, with DeMarcus Ware inflicting the fourth sack of the day before the break.

After Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars wowed the world, Carolina flew out of the blocks. Two completions to Ginn gave Carolina momentum. The drive stalled and Dundee-born Gano hit the right upright from 44 yards.

Manning finally completed a first down, finding Emmanuel Sanders for the biggest completion of the game. Sanders got another 22 from the next drive, putting Denver in the red zone again.

McManus was called upon once more and made it a two-score game.

Newton stepped up, lobbing a long, 42-yard throw to Brown who reeled the ball in despite decent coverage from Talib.

But Trevathan made his second interception to see another momentum shift in this topsy turvy game. Carolina have got away without having an exceptional receiving corps all season but their ranks were shown up here, with Brown posting 80 yards.

Kony Ealy gave Carolina a break with his third sack of the game, but Denver held firm, restricting Carolina to Gano's 39-yard field goal, reducing the deficit to 16-10.

But Manning stalled again, another three and out putting Newton back on the field. Two more three and outs by both quarterbacks later and Miller sealed the game, knocking the ball out of Newton's hand again, with TJ Ward recovering on Carolina's four-yard line.

CJ Anderson duly went over and Bennie Fowler's two-point conversion sealed the rout.

With Manning certain to ride off into the sunset after his last rodeo, he draws level with Brett Favre on 200 career wins, becoming the first quarterback to win it twice with two teams.

It is a fitting end to his career, as he looked all of his 39 years here.
