Bleachers, 14 Dec 2015

The Manny Pacquiao sweepstakes will continue into at least another week.

The Filipino icon, one of the biggest international superstars in boxing history, was scheduled to settle on his final opponent last week, but, for reasons yet unknown, we still don't have a name.
We take a look at the potential contenders and what the snag could be.

Next we take a look at Pacquiao's compatriot, Nonito Donaire, and his struggles in a possible Fight of the Year candidate this past Friday night in Puerto Rico.

Last, we turn out attention to the big boys with a trio of stories.
We take a look at Deontay Wilder's next opponent, the fracturing of the heavyweight crown and Bryant Jennings vs. Luis Ortiz.

These are the hottest boxing storylines for the week........

Why Hasn't Manny Pacquiao Made a Decision?

JOHN GURZINSKI/Getty Images

Pacquiao was scheduled to announce the opponent for his next and last fight, scheduled for April 9, this past week, but the Filipino icon, per Dan Rafael of ESPN.com, hasn't yet made up his mind.

The speculation earlier in the week was that Pacquiao would face Timothy Bradley in a third bout after the two elite welterweights split their two previous meetings, the first under highly controversial circumstances.

Bradley isn't the only fighter under consideration.

Former 140-pound titlist Amir Khan and current WBO junior welterweight champion Terence Crawford apparently remain in contention for the high-profile assignment. Both should greet the Pac Man's hesitation as a positive sign that they're still in the running.

Crawford is a rising fighter considered among the sport's young pound-for-pound stars. A fight with Pacquiao would present a potentially attractive pass-the-torch moment for Top Rank, which promotes both fighters and has been trying to build the Nebraskan as its next big star.

Khan, on the other hand, has been pining for a significant fight for the last couple of years. The Brit, however transparent his efforts to earn a big fight with his words and not fists, remains a marquee and attractive (lucrative) option.

We don't yet know what's holding up the process of selection here, and, as of now, there doesn't appear to be any firm timetable for resolution.

Does Donaire vs. Juarez Belong in the Fight of the Year Conversation?

You'd better believe it.

Donaire, a multi-time world champion, claimed the WBO Super Bantamweight Championship by turning back a gritty and determined challenge from previously unheralded Cesar Juarez via decision on Saturday night in Puerto Rico.

The fight immediately enters into the conversation among the best fights of 2015, even if it didn't seem to be on that path in the early rounds.

Donaire looked sharp to start the fight. He seemed on his way to outclassing Juarez, countering the younger fighter effectively and sending him to the mat twice in Round 4.

But things turned around at the halfway point. Donaire seemed to roll his ankle at the end of Round 6 and was a far less mobile fighter the rest of the way, which gave Juarez opportunities to walk him down and attack with ferocity along the ropes.

The Filipino Flash, who was near the top of the pound-for-pound ranks before losing a wide decision to Guillermo Rigondeaux in 2013, seemed taken back by his younger foe's relentless pressure and unwillingness to back down despite falling far behind early.

The second half of the fight was an exciting, all-action war, giving the fans a reason to demand Juarez again and Donaire a chance to continue his career with another world title, even if his best days are clearly in the rear-view mirror.

It might not be the Fight of the Year, but it's in the discussion, at least.

What Will Fans Think of Wilder-Szpilka?

Wilder has finally found someone to share the ring with for his January 16 defense of the WBC Heavyweight Championship at the Barclays Center.

The towering American champion will face the WBC's No. 8 rated contender Artur Szpilka in a fight that's sure to create some angst among the fans, even though Wilder's options were largely limited by the circumstances currently surrounding the heavyweight division.

Alexander Povetkin, the mandatory No. 1 contender for the big green belt, could've had the fight, but, per Victor Salazar of Boxing Scene, wanted a tune-up bout before challenging for the title. That removed him from consideration and left a variety of so-so options.

Wilder and his team believed they were close to lining up No. 3 contender Vyacheslav Glazkov for the fight, but the Ukrainian, who is promoted by Kathy Duva and Main Events, instead elected to pursue a far easier shot at the now vacant IBF Heavyweight Championship.

Under normal circumstances, given this information, most fans would give Wilder a pass here.

Szpilka is a good fighter, undersized for this challenge, perhaps, but a solid, tough contender. He's just not the big name people have been hoping to see Wilder face.

Wilder's problem is he comes into this fight on the heels of woeful mismatches with Eric Molina and Johann Duhaupas. Those two fights were indefensible, even if this one is given the circumstances, but good luck trying to explain that to the people who buy tickets and watch on TV.

The Fracturing of the Heavyweight Championship

Wladimir Klitschko's long reign as heavyweight champion maintained a sense of order over the land of boxing's big boys. He accumulated three-fourths of the alphabet titles and made all his mandatory defenses, ensuring that the IBF, WBA and WBO titles remained in one place.

Tyson Fury's win blew that all up.

Fury has little interest in making mandatory defenses against fighters that are largely unknown to the public and present little opportunity to financially cash in on his huge victory.

The IBF has already stripped him of its title for refusing to face mandatory challenger Glazkov and instead pursuing a contractually mandated rematch with Klitschko. Glazkov will face Charles Martin for the vacant title, with their fight heading to a purse bid on December 18.

The winner will hold a belt that's meaningless in the grand scheme of things, which is definitely a good thing.

Glazkov is undefeated on paper, but you could easily argue he deserved losses against Steve Cunningham, Malik Scott and journeyman Derric Rossy.

He's a decent fighter, but nothing overly special, and it's hard to overlook those three questionable wins in big spots.

Martin is an interesting case, mostly because it's difficult to figure out how the heck he was even ranked by the IBF, much less placed in position to fight for a vacant title.

The 29-year-old hasn't beaten a single fighter at, near or even around the top of the division. His biggest win is over 12-loss journeyman Raphael Zumbano Love.

And, yet, one of these men will carry around a belt in a couple of months and claim he's the world champion.

Yikes.

Can Bryant Jennings or Luis Ortiz Move Up the Ladder?

Jennings and Ortiz are both quality heavyweights with very different styles looking to make an imprint in a suddenly wide-open division.

The pair will meet Saturday night at the Turning Stone Casino and Resort in Verona, New York, on HBO, with the winner doing himself plenty of favors in a division now ruled by a brash Brit rather than it's stoic longtime champion.

Jennings gave Klitschko a decent scrap earlier this year at Madison Square Garden, a result which in hindsight may have both reflected the Philadelphian's skill and the former champ's decline. He's been out of the ring since.

Ortiz is a big, solid heavyweight puncher, but he does come with some baggage.

The 36-year-old Cuban tested positive for steroids after knocking out Lateef Kayode in the first round last year, and this fight has been conducted under the auspices of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) testing protocol.

This has the potential to be an exciting and intriguing fight, and the winner definitely will place himself in contention for a shot at a title (real or alphabet) in short order.
