Soccer Footballer Banned by France Over Sex-Tape Blackmail Case

Karim Benzema Could Miss Euro 2016
> After Being Suspended Indefinitely by France over Mathieu Valbuena Sex-Tape Scandal

  • Karim Benzema has been charged with conspiracy to blackmail by police
  • The Real Madrid striker says he only wanted to help Mathieu Valbuena
  • Benzema denies pressuring the Lyon star to contact the blackmailers
  • The 27-year-old's childhood friend, Karim Zenati, is believed to be involved
  • Benzema could miss out on next year's European Championship in France
Daily Mail UK, 10 December 2015

Karim Benzema will need to clear his name before he plays again for France.

That was the decision the French Football Federation reached on Thursday with its president Noel Le Graet saying: ‘If things do not move on he will not play Euro 2016.

'I would leave a door open for him but until new evidence in his favour appears he is not available for selection.’

Benzema spoke for the first time since becoming embroiled in blackmail scandal on French channel TF1

The French international is accused of being an accessory to an attempt to blackmail team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.

‘He is a good boy who grew up in a difficult neighbourhood and he has not changed his group of friends and he has become a star,’ added Le Graet who said he was pained to make the decision but that the FFF ‘could not turn a deaf ear to the recordings of conversations between Benzema and associates that have been leaked to the press’.

Le Graet stressed there was 'no problem' with Lyon playmaker Valbuena, however.

'Mathieu Valbuena is the victim,' he added.

Quoted in L'Equipe, he continued:

'For the last get-together, (France coach Didier) Deschamps did not take him because he was in turmoil. There is no problem with Valbuena.
'Valbuena has done nothing. At the time that he was made aware of the case, he did what he needed. He was very close to Benzema. There are hard times in friendship. But we must forgive. There will come a time when these two boys will one day chat.'

In an interview in Le Monde Valbuena has accused Benzema of trying to persuade him to pay a sum of money demanded for the release of a video in which Valbuena appears.

The two players have been ordered to have no contact until the case is concluded.

Benzema’s exclusion from the France squad is a huge blow to Didier Deschamps' hopes of including the Real Madrid forward in his starting line-up next June.

Benzema has scored 12 goals in 11 games this season and his form on the pitch appears to have been unaffected by the controversy off it.

He gave an interview to French television recently and had asked the Federation to suspend their decision on his future until the case was heard.

Zinedine Zidane also spoke in his favour urging the FFF to respect the player’s innocence until it is proven otherwise.

But those calls have not been heeded. Instead the opinion of Manuel Valls who is France’s Prime Minister has won out. He said:

‘A sportsman should have exemplary behavior or he should not have any place in a French team.’

French public opinion has also been largely against the 27-year-old, who tweeted that he 'respects the decision'.

The club released a statement continuing to back their player, however, writing:

'Real Madrid C. F. regrets, but respects the decision taken today by the French Football Federation to provisionally suspend Karim Benzema from the France national team, and wishes to reiterate once more its support for and confidence in the player.'

Benzema was first accused of complicity in the blackmail attempt at the start of November. He allegedly acted on behalf of a childhood friend by trying to persuade Valbuena to pay for the release of a so-called ‘sex-tape’.

The player is alleged to have spoken with Valbuena at France’s Clairefontaine training camp ahead of a friendly against Albania. His defence is that he was only trying to help his international team-mate.

His omission from the French side next summer could leave the way open for Arsenal striker Oliver Giroud to lead the line for Deschamps. The case is the latest in a long line of scandals to rock the French team.

During the 2010 World Cup players went on strike over a dispute with then manager Raymond Domenech. And in 2014 Manchester City's Sami Nasri was left out of the squad to go to Brazil after a fall out with the coach.

After finding out her boyfriend had been axed Nasri's girlfriend Anara Atanes tweeted: ‘F*** France and f*** Deschamps! What a s*** manager.’
