Arrow Right Olympics-History of Massive Drug Cheating >28 Suspended

IAAF Take Disciplinary Action Against TWENTY-EIGHT Athletes over Doping

  • Athletics' governing body to take action against 28 athletes after re-testing samples from 2005 and 2007 World Championships
  • IAAF refuses to name the athletes involved 'due to the legal process'
  • However the body insists 'very few remain active in the sport'
  • All 28 have been provisionally suspended but none were set to compete at this month's World Championship
Daily Mail UK, 12 August 2015

A staggering 28 athletes were exposed as drugs cheats on Tuesday after retesting of urine samples from the World Championships in 2005 and 2007.

In the latest wave of shocking revelations to hit the sport, it was announced that reanalysing frozen samples using new technology had uncovered 32 adverse findings in 28 athletes.

The identities of the athletes will be revealed next week following the crackdown, first predicted by The Mail UK.

One source says ‘big names’ are implicated, though none are British.

Jo Pavey finished fourth in the 10,000 metres in Osaka in 2007 and welcomed the move to ban cheats

The IAAF pledged none of the 28 who are still competing would be allowed to take part at the World Championships in Beijing later this month.

‘This is undoubtedly a very positive development because it is catching athletes who have cheated and means some clean athletes are retrospectively getting their rightful finishing positions and possibly medals,’ she told Sportsmail.

‘But 28 is a shockingly big number. It’s great that advances in the anti-doping technology mean these cheats can finally be caught. But it does feel like not enough has been done over the last years to combat drugs cheats and there is still so much more that needs to be done.’

Pavey, 40, called for the new World Anti-Doping Agency provision meaning samples can be tested for up to 10 years — it was previously eight years — to be extended further.

‘The freezing of samples is catching up with people and that’s great,’ she said. ‘It means the cheats are always looking over their shoulders in case past offences catch up with them.

‘But I would like the money to be found to store samples for a lot longer so the deterrent against cheating is greater and athletes who have retired don’t feel they’ve got away with it.’

There is cause for optimism for two British athletes who could be upgraded to medal positions in light of the findings.

Kelly Sotherton finished third and Jessica Ennis-Hill fourth at Osaka behind Ukrainian silver medallist Lyudmyla Blonska in 2007, who was later found to be a drugs cheat, although it is not known if she was doping at that time.

The IAAF have been heavily criticised since German broadcaster ARD and The Sunday Times published a leaked document which suggested doping was rampant in the sport between 2001 and 2012.

The IAAF deny these current efforts to root out historical drugs cheats are a reaction to the latest doping storm or an attempt to curry favour with those who have pilloried them for not doing enough to catch the dopers. ...

Jessica Ennis-Hill could potentially be upgraded to a medal winning position as a result of the findings

Kelly Sotherton could also have her position upgraded as a result of the latest discoveries

In 2012, the IAAF conducted a first round of retesting from the 2005 Helsinki World Championships and caught six athletes for doping, with the second round of retesting beginning in April.

‘A large majority of the 28 are retired, some have already been sanctioned and only very few remain active in the sport,’ said an IAAF spokesman said.
If doping violations are confirmed, the IAAF said it would ‘correct the record books and re-allocate medals as necessary.

That will music to the ears of some clean athletes, although many might say it is too little, too late.
