Serena Williams Makes it Joy of Six at Wimbledon After Defeating Garbine Muguruza to Keep Grand Slam Dream Alive

Serena Williams v Garbine Muguruza 6-4, 6-4

  • Top seed Serena Williams won her sixth Wimbledon singles title after defeating Garbine Muguruza 6-4, 6-4
  • World No 1 was broken in the opening game before reeling off four consecutive games to win the first set
  • The Spanish No 20 seed produced a late fightback in the second set but could not stave off defeat
  • The American currently holds all four major tournaments and remains on course for calendar Grand Slam

WIMBLEDON:

Serena Williams has completed the second ‘Serena Slam’ of her utterly extraordinary career by adding the Wimbledon singles title - her sixth in SW19 - to those she holds from last year’s US Open and this year’s Australian Open and French Open.

The 33-year-old American beat Garbine Muguruza of Spain in a match more thrilling than the 6-4, 6-4 score suggests to win the 21st Grand Slam singles titles of her career. Williams has won six Slam singles titles in Australia, three in Paris and six in New York as well as six here on these lawns now.

Muguruza was in tears during her acceptance speech but got a rapturous applause from her newfound fans

Her previous Serena Slam, holding all the Slam singles titles simultaneously but not in a calendar year, ran from the French Open of 2002 to the Australian Open of 2003.

Muguruza, born in Caracas, Venezuela and now resident in Barcelona, was the first Spanish woman in a Wimbledon singles final since Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in 1996. The 21-year-old world No20, who will climb to No9 in the rankings on Monday, was hoping to become Spain’s first winner here since Conchita Martinez in 1994. But for all her effort and strengths, she was eventually outmuscled and outplayed by a figure increasingly regarded as the best female tennis player of all time.
‘Eventually’ is the operative word. The second set looked at one point like a breeze for Williams but Muguruza showed amazing guts and nerve to claw her way back into it and hang on as the juggernaut of Williams crept to the line.

Muguruza has brought a smile and a thrilling sense of adventure to the All England Club. But Williams brought her A-game to London and when in full force there is not much that anyone else can do to stop her. She won 28 Slam singles matches on the bounce now, beating a string of Slam winners and former world No1s along the way.

Williams’ power game is underpinned by her ferocious serve but it faltered at the start of match as she double faulted on the opening point. Two more doubles in that game alone were indicative of nerves from the world No1 and Muguruza exploited the early weakness, converting the fourth break point with booming groundstrokes that forced Williams long.

The outsider held her own first service game comfortably and Williams put her first game on the board after going 0-30 down in her second service game. Muguruza showed great character to save two break points in her second service game but when she offered up two more at 4-3 ahead, Williams punished her.

The 21-year-old produced a late rally in the second set, winning three games in a row, but could not stave off defeat

The world No1 was getting into her groove, and while her serving was still not fluent, her sheer power was starting to match and beat Muguruza and she went ahead with a hold. Muguruza was now hitting long two often and when she double faulted to hand Williams a break point, the American seized on it and took the first set.

Both women held serve at the start of the second set but it was Williams’ turn to falter slightly, perhaps as nerves crept back in at the prospect of a fourth straight Slam. But Williams sealed two straight breaks for a 5-1 lead.

Then against all the odds, Muguruza kept in it with a break of her own for 5-2, a hold for 5-3 and another break back for 5-4 playing with such confident shot-making and force that even Williams was applauding at one stage. But in the next game, Williams broke to love for yet another triumph.

Wimbledon 2015:
Murray Misses Out Again as Jamie and Partner John Peers Lose Out to Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau in Men's Doubles Final

7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4

  • Jamie Murray and John Peers lost to Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4 in the Wimbledon men's doubles final
  • Jamie's younger brother Andy was in the crowd to watch his brother
  • Andy lost his semi-final singles match to Roger Federer on Friday
Daily Mail UK, 12 July 2015

Another day, another Centre Court heartache for the Murray family. This time it was Jamie, rather than Andy and though the status of the match might not quite have had the intensity of the Gentlemen’s Singles, the disappointment seemed almost as acute.

When Murray and his Australian partner John Peers reflect on this tournament, they will doubtless look back on it with affection.
They came in as No.13 seeds and achieved beyond expectations to reach the men’s doubles final, their first as a pairing in a Grand Slam.

In fact it is only a couple of years since the elder Murray looked to be sliding completely out of view from the mainstream tennis circuit, unable to settle with a doubles partner or achieve the kind of results that make the professional life sustainable.
So, in reality, like his younger brother, there has much to applaud in the past fortnight.

Indeed, there were enthusiastic cheers when he and Peers collected their runners-up silver salvers from His Royal Highness, The Duke of Kent in the Royal Box.
However, in the immediate aftermath there was nothing but a sense of regret and missed opportunity.

Wimbledon finals don’t come around often in life and though Murray already has a Mixed Doubles title to his name, the Gentlemen’s Doubles has considerably more value, and not just in monetary terms.

Judy Murray was also in the Centre Court crowd to watch her other talented son play out the tense final

With £325,000 on offer for the winning pair, the rewards are not inconsiderable; the value though would be in terms of status and reputation.

As it was, the Peers-Murray combination will leave Wimbledon with both enhanced though not with the trophies, which went to Dutchman Jean –Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, the first Romanian to win a Wimbledon title since Ilie Nastase won this title in 1973.

And for Tecau, in particular, there was a sense of vindication about the victory, having lost in this final in three previous years.

There was something like a gathering of the clans to support the older Murray brother.
Andy was there, with his wife Kim Sears, despite his own disappointment of losing to Roger Federer on Friday.

Romanian Tecau hits a smash during his straight sets win with Rojer against Peers and Murray

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...6635601396.jpg

Andy graciously applauded the doubles pair who defeated his older brother and Peers

He was seated a few rows back from his mother Judy and father William.
Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was front row of the Royal Box, dutifully there from the start at which point she was almost a solitary figure in those exclusive seats.

In fact, it took some time for Centre Court to fill after the Ladies’ Final but eventually a partisan crowd assembled and did their utmost to will the Scot over the line to a Wimbledon title.

It wasn’t that Murray and Peers were bad – Murray in particular served meticulously well for long periods – but Rojer and Tecau were simply relentless in recording their straight sets win.
The opportunities for Murray and Peers did come, but they were early on, with three breaks points in the first five games of the match.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...6631989058.jpg

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...6635819114.jpg

Sears (left) and Andy (right) moved seats at one point to get a better view of the match

They couldn’t seize on them and though they could not have known it then, they would never again be presented with a glimpse of the trophy.

For the first set went with serve throughout and it only saw Rojer and Tecau emerge the stronger in a tie break, the crucial break coming on a Murray serve but only when Peers, presented with a simple opportunity, volleyed out to fall 4-2 behind.

It would prove a decisive moment. Murray and Peers subsequently saved two set points but succumbed 7-5 and were barely allowed a look in thereafter.
For though Murray’s serve was holding up well at the start of the second set, Peers was broken in the third game.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...6631994701.jpg

Peers (left) and Murray (right) both go for the same ball during the first set tie-break

From there, neither Rojer nor Tecau presented their opponents with an opportunity to re-establish a foothold in the game, closing out the set 6-4.

Murray and Peers stayed with their opponents in the third set, trading blows and hanging in; but it felt as though as they were clinging on, rather than fighting them toe to toe.
There simply was no chance to break, another tie break seemingly their best hope of taking the match into a fourth set.
Roger is particular was ruthless, not losing a single point on his serve in that final set.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...6631999123.jpg

The early chances fell to Murray and Peers with three break points inside the first five games

So when Peers double faulted at 4-4 and Rojer and Tecau took the game, the die was cast.
Rojer was up to serve and once again, he did so without losing a point.
At the climax Tecau volleyed, Peers returned into the net and the match was done.

As Tecau and Rojer fell to their knees before embracing, Murray and Peers look dejected.
They had been well beaten in one hour and fifty-two minutes.
Yet in truth they had much of which they could be proud.

7-6 6-7 6-4 6-3
  • Novak Djokovic won a pulsating opening set 7-6 (7-1) on Centre Court on Sunday afternoon in 45 minutes
  • Roger Federer saved seven set points against the world No 1 in the second set to win it 7-6 (12-10)
  • Defending champion Djokovic won the third set 6-4 as a brief rain delay interrupted proceedings
  • The world No 1 won the fourth set 6-3 to seal the match 7-6 6-7 6-4 6-3 against seven-time champion Federer
  • Djokovic is the first person to successfully defend the Wimbledon title since Federer achieved the feat back in 2007
Daily Mail UK, 12 July 2015

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer provided tennis fit for a golden age on Sunday before the world No 1 eased to a third Wimbledon title.
Djokovic was stretched to his limits at times but ultimately proved too good for Andy Murray’s conqueror, winning 7-6 6-7 6-4 6-3 in two hours and 55 minutes.

Actors Bradley Cooper (top) and Benedict Cumberbatch were two celebrities who managed to have a seat inside the packed Centre Court

By doing so he moved ahead of the likes of Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl to register a ninth Grand Slam title, furthering his case to be regarded as one of the greats of the sport already at just 28.

Federer could not quite rouse himself to the heights he reached in knocking out Murray two days ago, but then his precision serving was up against an even more skilled returner than the world No 3.

The match will be remembered for the outstanding passage of play that developed late in the second set, as the Swiss clung on to force what turned into a thrilling tiebreak that almost lifted the roof off the Centre Court.

Federer had also forced two set points at 6-5 in the first set but the Serb saved both of them with powerful, flat serves wide out to the backhand that were unreturnable.
He is left without a Grand Slam title since 2012 final here and he will know that time is running out to acquire an eighteenth, especially in a sport so physical, as was amply demonstrated here.

Djokovic showed that he could overcome the effects of the huge disappointment he suffered by missing out on the French Open again in Paris. He is the complete tennis warrior.

Federer's camp, including his wife Mirka, celebrate his second set victory to tie the match at SW19

The two tiebreaks were utterly contrasting, and while the first was forgettable the second will be talked about for years.

In the opener Federer, who Murray failed to take to one of the sudden death shootouts, was suddenly all out of first serves and he lost it 7-1 through a double fault.

The second will be bracketed with the likes of the great Bjorn Borg-John McEnroe tiebreak of 1980 which McEnroe won 18-16. Borg had seven match points in that, while Djokovic had seven set points in this one before losing it 12-10, Federer taking it on his second attempt.

It could be argued that Swiss played worse in the second set, which he ended up winning, than he did in the others.

Ultimately, like so many of these matches between great players, it was all about who could be the most composed on the big points. An absolute monster was in the third set at 1-0 up when he forced a break point, got into a rally but hit a forehand long.

Had he managed that then the huge change in momentum would have been consolidated. But instead Djokovic held on and when he broke the next game he was able to go into the 22-minute rain delay decisively up at 3-2.
