Police were called to Walsh's beachside home at Somerton Park in Adelaide just after 2am on Friday where they found the 55-year-old and his wife Meredith with stab wounds.
His son Cy Walsh was arrested shortly afterwards at a friend's home in Glenelg East and has since been charged.

Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh has been stabbed to death in his Somerton Park home and his 26-year-old son Cy Walsh has been charged over the attack

He is currently under sedation in the Margaret Tobin Ward of Flinders Medical Centre. He was unable to instruct his lawyer whether he would apply for bail.
The accused was remanded in custody until September 15th.

Walsh's wife Meredith was treated in the same hospital after being stabbed in the leg.
Police removed a knife from the boot of a car at the AFL coach's home just hours after charges were laid.

Superintendent Des Bray said there had been an argument in the home and as a result both Walsh and his wife were stabbed.

It is believed that Cy, who normally lives at the family home, had been out before returning at 2am where he got into an argument with his parents.

'For any family, regardless of who it is, is one of the worst things that you could imagine that could happen to you,' Supt Bray said.

Police found the 55-year-old AFL coach and his wife Meredith with stab wounds at 2am on Friday morning at their Somerton Park family home

'The only thing that is different with this is that he has a high profile. The pain and suffering of the family is no different.'
Walsh's daughter is reportedly travelling home from overseas after hearing the news.

Geoff and Sandy Trowbridge, who live just 100 metres from Walsh, told Daily Mail Australia the family had only moved into the home in April.

Cy Walsh, 26, has been detained over his father's death and is undergoing psychiatric assessment at Flinders Medical Centre

The couple described the area as quiet and retirees made up most of the residents.
The Trowbridges said they hardly saw the first-year coach around the neighbourhood because he worked so hard.

'I feel sorry for the wife for this to happen ... and the daughter has a long trip home,' Ms Trowbridge said.

Resident Jim Gulliver said the people who lived in his gated townhouse complex were made of Crows supporters and they had no idea that Walsh lived behind them.
'We hadn't seen him walking around the neighbourhood or we would have recognised him,' Mr Gulliver told Daily Mail Australia.

Superintendent Des Bray said there had been an argument in the home and as a result both Walsh and his wife Meredith were stabbed early Friday morning

'There's six homes here and no one heard anything.'

Shocked Adelaide Crows players arrived at Adelaide Oval on Friday morning. They were scheduled to play Geelong on Sunday afternoon by it has since been cancelled by the AFL as a mark of respect.

In an interview in April, Walsh said his focus on his career had impacted on his family life. He had been a player and coach for more than 33 years.

'I just immersed myself, got consumed and was selfish with as much time I committed to footy,' he said.
'I lost that connection and I'm trying to reconnect with my son, which I have done.'

Police were called to the family home in Bungey Avenue at Somerton Park in Adelaide just after 2am on Friday

Adelaide Crows chairman Rob Chapman tearfully told reporters he was the first from the club to hear of the tragic news.

'I got a phone call at 3:30am from the police to say that a tragedy had unfolded and it involved Phil Walsh our coach. That’s a phone call no one ever wants to get,’ Chapman said.
Mr Chapman said the club briefed every single player and member of staff, including those who were overseas.

AFL Chief Executive Gillon McLachlan issued a statement expressing his shock and grief as he described Walsh as a man of 'boundless energy, enthusiasm and great intelligence'.

'Our industry is grieving today, and we send our love and support to the Walsh family, the Crows staff and players, Phil's wider circle of friends, the other clubs he worked with, and his many colleagues across the AFL,' he said.

'Phil Walsh was a man of boundless energy and enthusiasm, and his death is a tragic loss.
'At this time, the AFL is working closely with the Adelaide Football Club on the support required to the staff and players of the Crows.'

Mr McLachlan revealed on Friday afternoon that the Adelaide and Geelong game scheduled for Sunday would be cancelled and both teams would split the points.

He said Walsh had been a part of the AFL family for 32 years and it would be unfair on the many distraught players for the game to go ahead.
Walsh played 122 games in the Victorian Football League in the 1980s for Collingwood, Richmond and the Brisbane Bears.

After retiring as a player he joined Geelong as a strength and conditioning coach before taking up the assistant coach position at Port Adelaide in 1999.

He moved to the West Coast Eagles as assistant coach in 2009 before returning to Port Adelaide in 2014.
He was appointed Adelaide Crows coach in the 2014 off-season.
Walsh only decided to take the senior coaching job after facing a near-death experience in Peru in 2012 when he was hit by a bus.

It is believed the son, who normally lives at the family home, had been out before returning at 2am where he got into an argument with his parents

Walsh's club released a short statement following his death.

'The Adelaide Football Club is devastated at the sudden passing of senior coach Phil Walsh in the early hours of this morning,' the statement read.

'We ask if you could please respect the privacy of his family, as well as our players, coaches and staff, at this extremely difficult time.'

Former player and coach Graham Cornes told 5AA he couldn't remember a situation like this.
'It just has an impact on so many people, football goes through tragedy regularly there's no doubt about that but never of this magnitude where so many people are affected.
'The whole country is affected. What does it mean for the club? What does it mean for the players? More importantly what does it mean for his wife Meredith?

'The violence and the suddenness of it will impact on so many people.
'I've spoken to both my sons this morning who were really close to Phil and they aren't coping that well to be quite frank it's a shock in the circumstances.'

He is being remembered as a wonderful man who was admired as a coach by the Adelaide Crows and their supporters as tributes start to flow in.
Crows Supporters Group secretary Robyn Blanch said in the short time he had been the AFL club's coach he had earned the admiration of the team.

'He was such a wonderful man,' Ms Blanch said.
'The boys had such respect and admiration for him. You could just see that in the way they looked at him and how they played for him.
An emotional Ms Blanch said supporters had been in contact this morning when the news broke.
'He touched so many people in such a short time,' she said.
