Strikeforce Fedor vs. Henderson: 8 Reasons This Was the Right Fight to Make

Anticipation continues to build for the July 30 Strikeforce fight between MMA legends Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson. The fight card will be held at the Sears Centre Arena just outside of Chicago in Hoffman Estates, Ill., and is sure to be one of the biggest in the organization’s history.

These two warriors have spent their entire careers defying the odds by winning championships while generally being the smaller fighter against their opponents. Each man has already set his place in MMA history, but this fight should only prove to solidify their legacies.

But with Emelianenko coming off of two losses and Henderson having recently won the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship, some fans wonder why this fight was made in the first place.

Well fight fans, I’m here to put those criticisms to rest and explain to you the eight reasons why now was the right time to make the Fedor vs. Henderson fight.

8. Lack of Contenders for Henderson’s Title

Whether we want to admit it or not, he truth is that, at the moment, there simply isn’t a logical No. 1 contender for Dan Henderson’s 205-pound light heavyweight championship.

With “King Mo” Lawal coming off of an injury, he is obviously not ready to be competing for a title yet. It may come with again with time, but he will need to get back to the fighter that we saw before he lost his title. Not to mention, he is already scheduled to fight Roger Gracie in September.

Speaking of Gracie, he is also a potential future title contender, but doesn’t have that top level win that he needs to be an acceptable challenger for Henderson quite yet.

Gegard Mousasi was in line for another title shot, but had an extremely lackluster performance against Keith Jardine, who took the fight on very short notice.

Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante seems like the best possible candidate, but selling a rematch between these two fighters this soon just wouldn’t make for a very exciting main event.

“Right now at light heavyweight, in Strikeforce, there’s not really a clear opponent for me,” Henderson said on Inside MMA.

7. The Size Difference Is Minimal

Dan Henderson only recently made his move back up to 205 pounds after taking a fight against Jake Shields at 185 pounds in April 2010.
The move back up in weight, Henderson said, was just a more comfortable situation for him. At his age, he didn’t feel that cutting so much weight and depleting his body was healthy or something that he wanted to do.

But now Henderson is moving up again in weight classes to fight Fedor as a heavyweight.

This simple move-up is causing a lot of friction between fans who believe that Henderson is making the right move by going up, and those who feel that Fedor should be the one who has to move down to 205 to fight Henderson.

After all, Emelianenko is actually a relatively small heavyweight, regularly weighing in at around 230 pounds—35 pounds under the maximum allowed weight in his division.
In fact, Henderson’s most recent opponent, Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante, “walks around” at around 225 pounds, only a few pounds smaller than the former Pride heavyweight champion.

When on Inside MMA, Henderson also commented on the weight issue.

“I don’t think Fedor was prepared to cut down to 205 and it doesn’t really matter to me,” he concluded. “He’s not a huge heavyweight anyway. He’s not somebody that’s going to take me down and hang onto me.”

6. Historical Importance

As the only fighter ever to hold championships in two different weight classes at the same time in the history of a major MMA promotion, Dan Henderson has long been known as a fighter who will never shy away from a fight.

On the other side of the cage, Fedor Emelianenko was nearly unanimously considered the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world for the better part of a decade. Like Henderson, he did not let size get in the way of his monumental performances.

The fight between Fedor and Henderson will be a nostalgic flashback that few other fights could possibly ever hope to replicate. History will be made one way or another.

5. Ticket Sales

Playing off of the last slide, it is becoming increasingly obvious with the mounting anticipation that this should be one of the highest gates in Strikeforce history.

After the disappointing crowd turnout that happened at Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum earlier this month, Strikeforce is in need of a big time event to prove that they can still pack an arena full with paying fans.
It’s not like Strikeforce is alone, either. Bellator and every other promotion in America that is not named “UFC” has struggled mightily to keep ticket sales up while the UFC continues its global dominance of the sport.

There is no real competition between the two brands now that Strikeforce is under the Zuffa banner, but it always helps ticket sales to headline an event with perhaps your promotion’s two biggest draws fighting one another.

4. Fedor’s Final Fight?

For years, it looked as if Fedor Emelianenko may end up retiring as the only top-level fighter ever to have performed for an extended period of time without suffering a [true] loss.

But the MMA world was flipped on its head when Fabricio Werdum sprung a trap and caught Emelianenko with a triangle/arm bar submission to break what many believe to be the most impressive streak in the history of the sport.

Suddenly our champion was not unbeatable. In an instant, he became human again. That human side came out with reports that Emelianenko could have been considering retirement.
But we were all happy to learn that not only would he be returning, but that he would also be competing in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament.

Unfortunately, that end got even worse as Emelianenko was manhandled and beaten by a much larger and stronger Antonio “Big Foot” Silva, marking his second straight loss.
This time, Fedor himself said that he was considering retirement. Then again, we were delighted when he heard the news that he would be fighting Dan Henderson in July.

Now with a looming third straight loss and with Fedor fighting in the last bout of his Strikeforce contract, there is growing belief that win, lose or draw; this may be his final fight.

In fact, his own manager, Vadim Fikelstein, even admitted that he expects this to be Fedor’s final fight if he does lose to Henderson.

“I think that if Fedor loses to Dan Henderson, he will retire from Mixed Martial Arts,” he admitted to the Russian media. “And like I said many times before, it will be his decision and we [M-1 Global] have no influence of any kind on whatever he decides to do. It’s all up to him.
"But we hope for the best. Fedor is very motivated, and will be more than ready for this fight. He has a new goal, and is fully concentrated on reaching it.”

3. An Interesting Stylistic Matchup

As if the legendary aspect of the fight alone wasn’t enough to get fans excited, Fedor-Henderson also brings a very interesting stylistic matchup to the table.

It will be very interesting to see how these two combatants decide to exchange when they’re on their feet. Both men possess incredible, one-punch knockout power that would likely put them among the most powerful strikers ever to compete in the sport.
Yet somehow, despite each man having competed in 35 professional fights already, neither has ever been knocked out by an opponent.

Not only that, but Henderson’s Olympic-level wrestling will be on display against Fedor’s submission and world champion Sambo skills.

Fans of each man have considered their fighter the “obvious favorite,” so it will be interesting to see whose style and skills are able to come out victorious.

2. Strikeforce’s Final “Superfight?”

Many believe that Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix was set up in an effort to pit Fedor against current heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem in the finals. But when Fedor lost to Antonio Silva in the first round, all of that came crashing down.

There are still interesting fights to be had with Overeem vs. Silva and Kharitonov vs. Barnett remaining as semi-final bouts.
The winner of the tournament is definitely going to be in contention as the top heavyweight fighter on the planet, but still, the mystique of the tournament has been a bit harmed by Fedor no longer being a part of it.

And now, with Nick Diaz vacating his welterweight title and leaving Strikeforce to fight Georges St-Pierre in the UFC, the Strikeforce roster has grown significantly thinner. Not only that, but even women’s champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos has left the promotion, also vacating her title.

Simply put, the nails are beginning to be driven into the coffin that is Strikeforce, and it’s time to make some dream fights happen before it’s too late.

Unfortunately, the only real “super fight” remaining remaining is the one we’re going to see on July 30 between Fedor and Henderson.
Sure, other fights could draw attention...but nothing Strikeforce will produce again will capture the MMA world in the way that this fight will.

1. Satisfying the True Fans of the Sport

MMA fans have been looking forward to an epic “clash of the titans” type confrontation between these two fighters for many years. When each man was fighting in Pride, it always seemed like the potential of them going to battle was just around the corner. But somehow, it never happened.

The bottom line is that these two fighters are getting to the end of their respective careers. We know it, the media knows it and the fighters themselves know it. Each man has even openly admitted it.

So why not give the fans what they want now and make a huge paycheck in the process?

Who cares if there is no title on the line? Who cares if Fedor is coming off of two losses? Who cares if Henderson is moving up to heavyweight to make the fight happen?

We want to see it! After all, isn’t that what it’s all about?

I, for one, will be in attendance for this great fight and I will watch on with amazement as two of my favorite fighters of all-time go to war in front of my very own eyes.
I’m already so excited about this fight that I can barely sleep at night. Just imagine the anticipation during the week leading up to the fight.

It may be years past when we would have liked to see it, but the fact that Zuffa is giving us this dream fight shows us that they are truly dedicated to making the fans happy. To that, I say, “Bravo, Zuffa, bravo...”
