Breaking News Khan Must Focus on Algieri >NOT Distracted by Mayweather

Amir Khan Must Focus on Chris Algieri and NOT be Distracted by Floyd Mayweather

  • Floyd Mayweather will soon decide who he will fight in September
  • Amir Khan hopes to earn his shot by beating Chris Algieri on Friday
  • Khan takes on the New Yorker at the Barclays Centre in the Big Apple
  • Carl Froch is entertaining the prospect of fighting Gennady Golovkin
Daily Mail UK, 26 May 2015

And so the deathly dance resumes.

Floyd Mayweather is about to enter discussions.. with his Showtime cable TV paymaster Stephen Espinoza with regard to whom he should fight in September.

Memo to Amir Khan: Do not expect a decision any time soon.

Amir Khan is in New York to prepare for his fight against Chris Algieri on Friday

Khan talks to the British press at his hotel in the Big Apple as he concludes his preparations

Khan fights Chris Algieri on Friday and the American has only lost to Manny Pacquiao in his career

Mr Money delights in teasing his would-be partners beneath the flickering lights of the most expensive night clubs in Las Vegas.

Now you see him, now you don't.

Catch him if you can.

Twice before Khan has been drawn into the VIP circle. Twice before Mayweather has left him standing, a wall-flower in the dark.

This Friday night in New York the upstanding young man from Bolton UK, shares a ring with Chris Algieri, the local boy who was recently decked six times by Manny Pacquiao.

Khan knows he must win if he is ever to take the floor with Mayweather.

He is uncertain whether to do it in crushing style, and thereby scare off the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, or take a low-key victory which might lure Mayweather through those ropes at the MGM Grand.

'I know I have to impress to some extent,' says Khan. 'But I'm worried about alarming Floyd with my speed.'

Catch 22.

The man who calls himself Money insists that September 12 will see his 49th and last hurrah.

What does seem more certain is that this will be Khan's last chance to grab a mind-boggling fortune in the Mayweather Casino.

If Mayweather does go on to the 50th fight in hope of breaking Rocky Marciano' s 49-0 record, it is most likely to be a re-match with Pacquiao.

The Non-Fight Of The Century it may have turned out to be a couple of weeks ago but Money Man versus PacMan, in all its controversy, is still the richest cash cow waiting to be milked.

There are other options for Mayweather's No 49.

Danny Garcia, Keith Thurman, Lucas Matthyse, Miguel Cotto and Juan Manuel Marquez among them. Though probably not the bigger knock-out artist Gennady Golovkin

Khan appeared to move to the top of the dance card when Mayweather gave him a brief name check immediately after defeating Pacquiao.

But beware the mind games.

Khan's chief priority has to be to defeat Algieri, not worry about how Mayweather regards his victory.

Meanwhile, in the shadowy recesses of Floyd Mayweather's Starlight Ballroom, others are trying to make matches of their own.

James DeGale seeks a big name opponent following his historic IBF super-middleweight title victory over Andre Dirrell in Boston on Saturday.
Not only did Chunky become the first British Olympic gold medallist ever to win a world title, but beating an American in the US is always a significant achievement.

DeGale declares himself ready and willing to take on the biggest and the best.

Promoter Eddie Hearn is more likely to ease him through a homecoming 'reward' fight against a second tier challenger in October, thus setting up a Wembley Stadium re-match bonanza with DeGale's arch-rival George Groves early next spring.

James DeGale with his Olympic gold medal and his newly-acquired world super-middleweight title

DeGale will now target a rematch against bitter rival George Groves at Wembley next year

That depends on Saint George winning the WBC version of the super-middleweight title when he challenges Badou Jack in America this summer.
But unless Groves has declined significantly as a consequence of being brutally knocked out by Carl Froch at Wembley, he should win that one.

-Assuming Kell Brook sees off Matchroom stablemate Frankie Gavin's world light-welterweight title challenge at London's O2 arena this Saturday, which looks like a given, his next defence is likely to be at home once more, against Brandon Rios in August.

As for Froch, he is tempted by the chance to climax his distinguished career by fighting the fearsome Gennady Golovkin.
That, against the Kazakh knock-out merchant, is a deadlier dance than tripping the light fight fantastic with Mayweather.

Froch could simply retire. But his warrior mind-set is nagging him to test himself against probably the heaviest pound-for-pound puncher in the world.

Carl Froch has not fought since knocking out Groves at the national stadium last year

Froch is considering a fight against the hardest puncher in boxing, undefeated Gennady Golovki

'I believe I can take his power better than any of his middleweight opponents and use my extra size and strength to end his unbeaten record,' says Froch.
'This is one fight which does excite me to do it again. But I will get my trainer Rob McCracken, my promoter Eddie Hearn and my lovely partner Rachael into the same room in the next couple of weeks to discuss whether to fight again.

'But the final decision will be mine.'

An extra lure for Froch is that he is substantially bigger than Golovkin, who is a small middleweight but is offering to meet Froch at super-middleweight.
Furthermore, this massive event could give the Cobra his long-desired appearance at his beloved Nottingham Forest's City Ground, or another big night at Wembley.

Gentlemen, take your partners please...
