Ethiopian Tigist Tufa Wins London Marathon to End Four Years of Kenyan Domination

Ethiopia's Tigist Tufa ended Kenya's domination of the women's race at the Virgin Money London Marathon with a shock victory on Sunday.

The 28-year-old, who was only the ninth-fastest in the field, seized a cagey race by the scruff of the neck in the closing stages to pull clear of the field and was able to wave to the crowds as she came down The Mall to win by 18 seconds from Mary Keitany.

It was the biggest win of her career and ended four years of domination by Kenya's women in the capital.
She crossed the line in an unofficial time of two hours 23 minutes and 22 seconds to become the first Ethiopian women's champion since Derartu Tulu in 2001.

Another Ethiopian, Tirfi Tsegaye, came home in third place.
As well as Paula Radcliffe's farewell, the race had been billed as a four-way fight between a quartet of Kenyans: defending champion Edna Kiplagat, two-time former champion Keitany, half-marathon world record holder Florence Kiplagat and Priscah Jeptoo, the winner in 2013.

Tufa had barely been mentioned in the build-up, but, beneath overcast skies in the capital, the slow pace played into her hands and she produced a 25th mile of 5mins 07secs to break her rivals. From that point on there was only one winner.

Sonia Samuels was the first Briton home in 2:31:46 in 16th place.

Eliud Kipchoge won a titanic tussle with fellow Kenyan Wilson Kipsang to end his compatriot's reign as Virgin Money London Marathon champion on Sunday.

The former world 5,000 metres champion broke away from two-time winner Kipsang in the final 800 metres, having two miles earlier left world record holder Dennis Kimetto in his wake.
The 30-year-old, who has moved up to the marathon following a track career which brought him global gold in Paris in 2003, was taking on the three fastest men of all time over 26.2 miles, but looked relaxed as his rivals faded before he crossed the line in two hours four minutes 42 seconds.

He had built a big enough lead to allow him to celebrate as he came down The Mall, pointing to the crowds lining the road as he came home five seconds ahead of Kipsang.
Kimetto was third, finishing some way back in 2hrs 5mins 50secs, to complete a Kenyan clean sweep.

This race featured perhaps the toughest fields ever assembled and, after a blistering early pace, it turned into a four-way shoot-out between four Kenyans, with Stanley Biwott also in the mix until the closing stages.
Racing under overcast skies, Kipchoge and Kipsang were the ones to make a move, pulling clear around the 24-mile mark and opening up an unassailable gap.

The pair were neck and neck down the Embankment, but at the finish it was the former track man who had the strength as he added the London title to the marathons in Rotterdam and Chicago he won last year.
Kipchoge said: 'It was a tough race. My training paid off and it went to plan. The crowd were wonderful and lifted me for my sprint finish.'

Paula Radcliffe mouthed thank you and blew kisses to the crowd as she ran down The Mall and bowed out of competitive marathon running after an incredible career, dissolving into tears as the scoreboard behind registered her time as 2:36.55.

‘Especially down the last mile, I didn’t care about time, I just wanted to thank as many people as possible,’ Radcliffe said to the BBC.
‘The time didn’t matter but you can’t come to London and not give it an honest effort. I was becoming more and more emotional along the route. There was a sign on the Embankment saying ‘we will miss you’ but not as much as I’ll miss the London marathon.’

This 26.2mile route from London’s Blackheath to Pall Mall was the scene of her greatest triumph in April 2003, a 2:15.25 World Record which no woman has come close to threatening 12 years later.
She was in nowhere near that shape on Sunday, starting with the 37,000 running the mass event rather than the elite women.

But it was a brave effort for a 41-year-old who has barely run since February when an injury to her left foot and Achilles flared up.
She was the 199th woman over the line and her finishing time was well inside the IAAF qualifying standard for the Rio Olympics which is 2:42.00 with the British Athletics standard – which will be significantly tougher – yet to be announced. It is immaterial though, because Radcliffe has maintained throughout this will be her final marathon.

‘My body can’t train at this level any more,’ she said, ‘I was at a training camp in Kenya and pushed myself too hard and I broke down. I’m sure the magic of London helped me run faster than I would or should have been capable of.
‘It was so loud, my ears were ringing every time I have raced here but it was even louder today. I was definitely able to reflect on my past experiences.’

Radcliffe won on her London marathon debut in 2002, in 2003 and 2005, when she set the women’s only record of 2:17.42. The characteristic head bob was there today, too, and the white socks pulled over her calves but the wide smile was something we are less used to seeing.

‘I was just trying to enjoy it and soak it all in,’ she said.

Her parents Pat and Peter were at the finish line, as they have been for all her London marathon rune. She held son Raphael in her arms as eight-year-old daughter Isla clutched her arm and burst into tears.

In the women’s elite field, the attention pre-race had centred on four Kenyan women but Tigist Tufa broke away from the pack to become only the third Ethiopian woman to win the London marathon, after Derata Tulu in 2001 and Aselefech Mergia in 2010. Tufa, who the bookmakers judged a 25/1 shot before the race, crossed the line in 2:23.22 with two-time winner Mary Keitany 18 seconds behind. Ethiopia’s tirfi Tsegaye was third in 2:23.41.

Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, a World Champion over 5,000m, triumphed in 2:04.42, five seconds ahead of his compatriot Wilson Kipsang in the men’s race.
