Update World Snooker Championship 2015-Stuart Bingham WINS=18-15

Mark Selby Begins World Snooker Championship Title Defence
-in Commanding Style as He Leads Kurt Maflin in First-Round Opening Session

  • Mark Selby leads Kurt Maflin 6-3 and needs only four more frames to win
  • No first-time champion in Sheffield has returned to retain the trophy
  • Selby and Maflin shared the first four frames before Selby pulled away
  • Marco Fu leads Jimmy Robertson 5-4 after break of 66 in final frame
Daily Mail UK, 18 April 2015

Mark Selby was straight into an auspicious groove as he began his title defence at the Betfred World Championship on Saturday.
The 31-year-old from Leicester rocked Ronnie O'Sullivan in last year's final to claim his maiden Crucible title, and returned to ease 6-3 ahead of Kurt Maflin in their first-round tussle.
No first-time champion in Sheffield has returned to retain the trophy 12 months on, and that factor has taken the tag of the 'Crucible curse'.

Mark Selby and Norwegian Kurt Maflin look on during their first round match at the Crucible in Sheffield

Selby is equipped with the form to be a repeat winner, having lifted the German Masters and China Open titles this year, and breaks of 84, 108, 53, 69 and 56 gave him a commanding lead to take into the evening session.
His match with Maflin concludes on Saturday, the only clash to reach a finish on day one of the tournament, and Selby looked like being too strong for his London-born opponent who currently represents Norway, where he has lived for more than a decade.

Maflin defeated Steve Davis in the qualifying stages, and he beat Selby in Germany last year, but this was a Crucible debut for the 31-year-old. Selby, despite being just two months older than Maflin, is an old hand at the tournament, having made his first World Championship appearance 10 years ago.
They shared the four frames before the mid-session interval, Maflin making runs of 96 and 60, before Selby opened a two-frame lead and then also claimed the seventh after a re-spotted black.
It looked a pivotal frame, as Maflin twice attempted to double in the black but on the second occasion left Selby a long pot, which he fired assuredly into the centre of the pocket.

Back came Maflin with an 88 break, but when Selby bustled through the last of the session he had a commanding advantage to take into the concluding session, needing just four more frames to reach the second round.

Hong Kong cueman Marco Fu took the final frame of the session with a break of 66 to nudge 5-4 in front of Bexhill's Jimmy Robertson.

Robertson was mauled 10-1 by Selby when making his World Championship debut four years ago, but after qualifying for the second time was making a stronger fist this time.

The 28-year-old Englishman briefly threatened to make a 147 maximum break, which would have been the 11th in the tournament's history, but missed the 11th red in the fifth frame.

Update re: World Snooker Championship 2015-Stuart Bingham WINS=18-15

Reanne Evans Sees 10-Year Reign as World Champion Come to an End After Shock Defeat by Ng On Yee

  • Reanne Evans fell to a shock defeat by Hong Kong's Ng On Yee
  • Her 10-year reign as world snooker champion has come to an end
  • In 2010, Evans had become the first woman for 16 years to be given the chance to qualify for men's snooker events
By PA, 21 April 2015

Reanne Evans saw her 10-year reign as women's world snooker champion surprisingly ended on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old from Dudley UK, earlier this month lost narrowly to Ken Doherty in the first round of qualifying for the Crucible-staged Betfred World Championship.
She suffered a fresh blow at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds as she relinquished her WLBSA World Ladies title, losing 4-2 in the semi-finals to Hong Kong's Ng On Yee, who went on to defeat England's Emma Bonney 6-2 in the final.

Hong Kong's Ng On Yee poses with the women's title of the World Amateur Snooker Championship in 2009

Hong Kong's Yee, the 2009 and 2010 World Amateur champion only dropped four frames in four maths from the last-16 stage onwards.
But it is her win over Evans which really stands out.

Evans has dominated the ladies' game and in 2010 became the first woman to be afforded the chance to qualify for men' events since 1994.
And she had pushed Doherty close, only to lose 10-8 in the first of three qualifying rounds for this year's men's World Championship.
But 11 days later, Yee - who was actually beaten by Evans in last year's final - claimed a shock win to become the first new world ladies' champion for a decade.

Update re: World Snooker Championship 2015-Stuart Bingham WINS=18-15

Ronnie O'Sullivan Completes Victory Over Craig Steadman in First Round of World Snooker Championship

  • Ronnie O'Sullivan beats Craig Steadman 10-3 at The Crucible
  • The five-time world champion was 7-2 ahead overnight
  • O'Sullivan won the final three frames he required on Wednesday morning
  • The 39-year-old was forced to change his shoes on Tuesday
By PA, 22 April 2015

Ronnie O'Sullivan came through his first test of the Betfred World Championship but struggled to put his best foot forward.
A 10-3 victory over Craig Steadman, whose Crucible debut was a constant struggle, asked more questions than it answered about O'Sullivan's form.

A handsome winning margin disguised what was a mediocre opening performance from the five-time champion, who was wearing a comfortable old pair of dress shoes for the finale to the contest, having risked a fine by briefly playing in his socks when a new pair were causing him pain on Tuesday.

Ronnie O'Sullivan moved into the second round of the World Snooker Championship on Wednesday

The five-time world champion beat Craig Steadman 10-3 in their first round contest at The Crucible

It is understood O'Sullivan could face a small punishment, in the region of £250, for being in breach of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association's dress code.

He told BBC after clinching his last-16 place:

'I've got no fashion sense at all. I had the last ones for 10 years - I didn't want to get rid of them and then I left them in a hotel and I lost them.
'I had this old battered pair, and I thought, "I've got to buy a new pair", and I just bought the wrong pair basically.
'They were bashing my feet and I had to take them off. I couldn't wear them.'

O'Sullivan led 7-2 overnight and returned on Wednesday morning to win the final three frames he needed

O'Sullivan won by a comprehensive margin but didn't hit top form during his first round match

O'Sullivan borrowed shoes from tournament director Mike Ganley, who had warned him he required suitable footwear.

'He said, "You cant play in your socks", but I didn't want to play in my shoes either,' O'Sullivan said.
'I got a pair of Mike Ganley's stinky old shoes, and you know what - they felt great.'

O'Sullivan began the two-session match with a break of 104, and added runs of 61, 59, 54 and 75 in establishing a 7-2 overnight lead, before doing enough in a scrappy morning session on Wednesday to cross the winning line and set up a shot at Matthew Stevens or Mark Williams in the second round.

The 39-year-old had trouble with his shoes during the session on Tuesday afternoon

O'Sullivan was seen playing in socks on Tuesday and could face a small fine for breach of dress code

However many chances O'Sullivan needed to win his frames, Steadman invariably obliged, with a string of missed blacks on Tuesday proving highly damaging. A more composed opponent would have punished O'Sullivan.

The first frame of Wednesday morning went O'Sullivan's way, as Steadman's missing ways persisted. It seemed the pattern would continue into the next too when Steadman missed brown for the frame.
However the 32-year-old lorry driver's son from Manchester had an unexpected reprieve when O'Sullivan overcut what looked a quite straightforward shot on the same ball, and this time Steadman made it count.

It was snooker from amateur hour at times, even from O'Sullivan, looking way off the game that has taken him to the last three World Championship finals.
As the mistakes from both men continued, O'Sullivan had a highest break of 27 to nudge 9-3 ahead, and snaffled the next to safely clear his first hurdle in the tournament.

Stuart Bingham Holds his Nerve to Defy the Odds by Beating Shaun Murphy 18-15 to Win Snooker World Championships

  • Stuart Bingham defeated Shaun Murphy 18-15 in World Championship final
  • Bingham had trailed Murphy 8-4 before coming back to lead 14-11 heading into the final session
  • Murphy won four of the opening five frames to level the score at 15-15
  • Bingham came through a titanic 31st frame lasting 63mins to regain lead
  • The 38-year-old is the third oldest champion in tournament's history
  • There were tears again. Stuart Bingham wanted to keep his cool but the moment was too powerful, as realisation dawned. Just before 11pm, his life’s ambition had come true.
Daily Mail UK, 4 May 2015

The Crucible Theatre had just witnessed one of the best finals in the history of the BetFred World Snooker Championships but, more than anything, they had seen a fairy tale come true, as the 38-year-old from Basildon saw off Shaun Murphy 18-15.

It is 30 years since 18million viewers tuned in to see Dennis Taylor and Steve Davis go to the final black and for long periods in the best of 35 contest, it appeared as if Bingham – a 50-1 shot when the tournament started – and Murphy would do the same, as the contest ebbed and flowed.

Ultimately, though, this was Bingham’s night. Having been pegged back to 15-15, he held his nerve in frame 31 – which lasted 63 tension-filled minutes – forcing a 38 points of mistakes out of his opponent to take the lead and then showing class to see out the final two frames.

This was a remarkable performance from someone who had previously not got further than the last eight but, given he had disposed of Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump on the way to the final – victories that left him weeping with joy – it was no fluke.

When it got to 15-15, I thought my chance had gone,’ said Bingham, who collected a cheque for £300,000. ‘It felt like my arm belonged to somebody else. We went through a marathon and I was just able to pinch it. It is unbelievable. I really can’t believe this has happened to me.
‘You dream about things like this when you are a kid but now it has become reality. I got through the first round and I just kept going from strength to strength. Sometimes your name is on the trophy and I know from my game against Judd that he could have been sitting here instead.

Shaun Murphy grimaces as he watches the title slip away from him, despite pulling back to 15-15

‘I was thinking loads of things when the final started, I felt overwhelmed but there came point when I thought to myself “yeah, I can do this”. I just want to make sure now that I am a good role model as World Champion. I am proof that if you stick at it, that your dream come true.’

More than anything, he played like a dream. The afternoon session yesterday belonged to Bingham and he displayed the poise you would associate a Champion: head still, cue moving effortlessly and pockets being found with unerring accuracy.

Resuming play trailing 9-8, Bingham swiftly restored parity and then began to move relentlessly clear, taking every chance Murphy gave him to score heavily. Before the first interval, Bingham had rattled off four unanswered frames as his opponent sat forlornly in his chair.

Here was a role reversal. When the final began on Sunday, there were moments when Murphy looked like he was ready to blow Bingham away and, perhaps, administer the kind of thrashing he had received at the hands of O’Sullivan 12 months ago.

Such was his confidence, Bingham even raised the prospect of a first maximum when he sank 14 reds and blacks before his dream of a 147 was extinguished by a tight red on the cushion. The 112 he amassed was still significant as it was the 85th century break of this tournament, a record.

Murphy stemmed the tide by claiming two of the next three frames with breaks of 59 and 87 but it seemed Bingham had struck a significant blow when emerging on top in frame 25 – both men made serious, uncharacteristic errors but Bingham kept cool long enough to get the job done.

Murphy slumps in his chair as Bingham wins eight of nine frames during the afternoon session

Bingham is the oldest first time finalist at the World Championships since Ray Reardon

When they returned for the final session, however, it seemed as if the thinking time – and the realisation of what he might achieve – had got to Bingham. His first shot of frame 26 was a complete miss, while his second was as scruffy as a novice and left a chalk mark on the baize.

Suddenly the momentum was with Murphy, a winner here in 2005, and when he levelled in frame 30, only one outcome appeared likely. It was to Bingham’s credit, then, that he quarried deep into his reservoirs of courage and got over the line with a final break of 88.

‘It’s funny, I will probably feel the disappointment tomorrow,’ said Murphy. ‘But, you know, I am delighted for Stuart. He is one of the nicest guys you could meet. He played like a winner all through the match. He loves snooker and he fully deserves this.’
