Daily Mail UK, 25 November 2014

Australian batsman Phil Hughes is fighting for his life in a Sydney hospital after being knocked unconscious by a bouncer that struck him on the head during a Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday.
The left-hander, who has played 26 Tests for Australia and been involved in three Ashes series, has had surgery and is in an induced coma in intensive care.
The 25-year-old, playing for South Australia against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), was struck on the side of his helmet by a Sean Abbott delivery and collapsed face-first to the ground shortly afterwards.

It is now a tense wait for the loved ones and cricketing colleagues who rushed to his bedside - including Australia captain Michael Clarke - to hear if Hughes' surgery was successful. His family has released a statement which said 'the outcome of that surgery is unlikely to be known for the next 24 to 48 hours.'

Horrified spectators watched as paramedics performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the batsman and treated him on the boundary for around 40 minutes. He was then taken from the field on a medicab and flown to St Vincent's Hospital by helicopter.
Hughes arrived at the hospital on life support, St Vincent's spokesman David Faktor told Daily Mail Australia. He underwent scans as soon as he arrived and was then taken in for surgery.
'He's in the best of hands, he has loved ones here,' Mr Faktor said.

'He's in ICU now, they've finished the surgery's but he's still in a critical condition. Now they'll just monitor him.'
Reports in Australia said Abbott was receiving counselling after the incident. The 22-year-old made his first-class debut for New South Wales - with Hughes also in the team - back in 2011.

Sutherland said in a statement:

'Our thoughts and prayers are with Phil Hughes right now. We are also thinking of his family, team-mates and friends in the Australian cricket family.
'His welfare is our highest priority. We're also naturally concerned about all of those involved in today's game and will be giving them our utmost support.'

Australian team doctor Peter Brukner said in a statement:

'Phillip Hughes suffered a severe head injury while batting for South Australia at the SCG today
'Phillip was treated on the ground by Cricket NSW medical staff and transferred by ambulance to St Vincent's Hospital.'He subsequently underwent surgery and remains in a critical conditions in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Wednesday's Daily Telegraph in Australia and the Herald Sun are both praying for Hughes

'Unless there is any significant change there will be no further updates on his condition until tomorrow.
'Phillip is receiving the best possible medical care. The thoughts of his team-mates and the wider cricket community are with Phillip and his family and friends at this difficult time.'

All the players who witnessed Hughes suffer his injury will be given counselling, Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) said.
ACA chief executive Alastair Nicholson added: 'We were obviously shocked to learn of the seriousness of the incident involving Phil.
'While we have faith that he's receiving the best available treatment, the situation will impact his family, friends, and those directly involved on the field.

'The ACA is therefore working closely with CA to arrange the appropriate counselling for those affected.'

Before the incident, the opener had scored a composed 63 off 161 balls and looked to be in good form to claim Clarke's vacant Test batting spot in next week's opening Test with India.
His injury prompted officials to call an early tea break with SA at 136 for two but play was then abandoned for the day.
'Clearly the priority is Phil's health and we want to keep his family fully informed,' a Cricket NSW spokesman said. 'We don't have any updates on Phil's health at the moment.'
Hughes was accompanied to hospital by NSW team doctor John Orchard.

National coach Darren Lehmann was one of many who led the well wishes for Hughes

Helmet manufacturers Masuri sent a press release later in the day saying it was 'actively seeking as much TV and video footage of the incident as possible, to be able to see more conclusively exactly where the player was hit.'
The company wished Hughes well but also tried to absolve itself of blame and even seemed to be trying to plug a new helmet.
The statement went on: 'From the footage and pictures currently available to Masuri, it appears that Phil Hughes was struck by the ball to the rear of the grille and below the back of the shell, missing his Masuri Original Test model helmet.

'This is a vulnerable area of the head and neck that helmets cannot fully protect, while enabling batsmen to have full and proper movement.
'The newly-developed Masuri Vision Series helmet, which supersedes the 2013 helmet worn by Phil Hughes, does afford batsmen extra protection in this region – and still allows comfortable movement.'

England cricketers past and present, including James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior, Michael Vaughan and Paul Collingwood, tweeted messages of support.
The England and Wales Cricket Board also posted on Twitter: 'Thoughts with Phil Hughes and his family from all at ECB. Get well soon.'
Hughes has been in and out of Australia's Test side since making his debut in 2009 and has not featured in over a year.
He was in line for a potential recall for the first Test against India next month, with captain Clarke a serious doubt with a hamstring injury.

'I STILL HAVE GOOSEBUMPS': WITNESS SPEAKS Nine News reporter Will Dempsey was watching the match at the ground when Phil Hughes was struck by the ball.
'I have still goosebumps. It was chilling,' Dempsey told Daily Mail Australia.
'There was this crack that echoed through the grounds. It was an eerie feeling, you knew something wasn't right.
'It didn't sound like leather hitting hard metal, it looked like a bouncer crept under his grill.
'Players ran to him as soon as he collapsed face first.
'Brad Haddin rolled Hughes on to his side and doctors were immediately at the grounds.
'Tom Cooper and David Warner stayed by his side for more than half an hour.
They worked on Phil for around 45 minutes.
'There was dead silence at the ground. No one in the stands spoke or move. No one left, unless they were moving closer to Hughes to help.
'Steve O'Keefe came off the ground crying. Hughes was loaded into one of two ambulances. It appeared that the helicopter landed at Paddington Barracks.
'Steve Smith came to the stands, visibly distressed.
'Speaking with Moises Henriques and Mark Waugh, Steve motioned to indicate that Phil had been hit underneath his jawline..
'Sean Abbott, who had bowled to Hughes, was in the dressing room the entire time. Players were comforting each other, many were crying.
'It was the second ball to hit a player in five overs. It was fast bowling but Abbott's ball to Hughes was a bit sharper than usual.
'The ambulance changed direction to avoid the crowds. People and guards were yelling at people who were trying to take photos of Phil as they loaded him into the ambulance.
'Umpires were shouting, "Get away, get away".
'David Warner had been at Phil's side and walked up to his fiancée and daughter in the stands for a warm hug - he was really upset.'
His last appearance for his national side came last month in a one-day international against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.
He featured in the Ashes series in England in 2009 and 2013 the series Down Under in 2010-2011.
Hughes was also well known to fans of English county cricket after spells at Middlesex, Hampshire and Worcestershire.
Australian national coach Darren Lehmann tweeted: 'Our thoughts and prayers are with phil and his family! 'He is a great fighter and a great young man!'
Test cricketer Peter Siddle wrote: 'Sad to hear about my little mate Hughsey. Thoughts go out to him and his family. Stay strong brother! X'

Hughes has played in 26 Tests and 25 one-day internationals for Australia

THE CAREER OF PHIL HUGHES Phil Hughes has always been something of a maverick in Australian cricketing circles.
A pugnacious left-hander brimming with self-confidence, he has been in an out of the Australian national team for the past five years.
His ability to score runs has never been questioned but his unorthodox batting technique, especially against short-pitched bowling, has restricted his appearances to 26 tests and 20 one-day internationals.
Before Tuesday's horrific incident, when he was struck in the head by a ball while batting in a domestic first-class match, Hughes was pushing for a recall to the test team.
He underwent emergency surgery and remains in a critical condition in a Sydney hospital with the thoughts and well-wishes of the cricketing world with him.

Hughes cuts the ball during an Australia Test match with Sri Lanka in Hobart in December 2012

Hughes took the cricketing world by storm when he made his test debut in 2009, scoring a mountain of runs despite often looking uncomfortable at the crease, stepping away from short-pitched deliveries and slashing the ball over backward point.
Like many Australian cricketers, Hughes was raised in rural New South Wales. The Australian bush can be a harsh and often remote environment with limited opportunities for children, but is one that has produced a long line of tough, single-minded players.
Hughes grew up on a banana plantation in Macksville, a town of 3,000 in the state's subtropical north, halfway between Sydney and the Queensland capital Brisbane.

He honed his skills through hours of monotonous practice.
During the day, he would relentlessly hit balls in his backyard. At night, he would perfect his unique strokeplay by playing shots in front of a full-length mirror.
By the age of 12 he had run out of junior players to challenge him so was forced to play against adults, who gave him his first real test of courage with a barrage of bouncers.

Hughes and Brett Lee enjoying themselves on the boundary at Edgbaston during the 2009 Ashes series

He made his first-class debut at 18 and finished the season by becoming the youngest player to score a century in the final of Australia's domestic Sheffield Shield competition.
It was not just his timing at the crease that was perfect.

A vacancy suddenly opened up in the Australian team after Matt Hayden retired and Hughes won a place in the test side for the tour of South Africa in 2009.
Riddled with nerves, he was dismissed for a fourth-ball duck after an ugly swipe in his first test innings, but he quickly rebounded and showed he was made of sterner stuff.
Short for an opener, he made an assured 75 in the second innings then scored hundreds in each innings of his second test, becoming the youngest man to achieve the feat at test level.

But his meteoric rise was matched by his sudden fall.
He was dropped from the team during the Ashes series that same year and although he made it back several times since, he has never managed to cement his spot in the team, despite his widespread popularity.
From his 26 Tests, he has scored 1,535 runs at an average of 32.65, with three centuries. He has also scored two ODI hundreds.
For now the cricket world is just hoping he can recover from his injuries.

Phillip Hughes Death:
Doctors Reveal Cricket Ball Split his Artery, which led to 'Catastrophic' Bleeding on the Brain

Phillip Hughes died aged 25 after being hit on the head by a bouncer

  • Doctors who treated Hughes say there had only been 100 cases before
  • St Vincent's Hospital head of trauma Tony Grabs said he had never encountered the condition before
  • Team doctor Peter Brukner said the injury was 'frequently fatal'
AP Australia, 27 November 2014

Doctors who treated Phillip Hughes after he was struck on the side of the head by a cricket ball have described the condition he died from as 'incredibly rare' and 'very freakish'.

Team doctor Peter Brukner said on Thursday that only a hundred cases of vertebral artery dissection had ever been reported.

Hughes died on Thursday aged 25 after being hit on the head by a cricket ball while playing for South Australia in a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

There's only one previous case ever reported as a result of a cricket ball,' Dr Brukner said.
St Vincent's Hospital head of trauma Tony Grabs said he had never encountered the condition before.

'We haven't seen this type of injury at this hospital, it's very rare, very freakish,' Dr Grabs said.

The ball hit Hughes on the side of his neck at Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday and compressed his verbal artery which carries blood to the brain.
It caused the artery to split and led to a 'massive bleed' in the brain, which Dr Brukner said was 'frequently fatal'.
