Boxing Mayweather Now Boxing Promoter Amid Rematch Rumours with Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao is 'Crossing his Fingers' That a Superfight with Floyd Mayweather Happens in 2015 as He Prepares to Defend his WBO Title against Chris Algieri

  • Manny Pacquiao defends WBO world title vs Chris Algieri on November 23
  • Filipino is 'crossing his fingers' he can fight Floyd Mayweather Jnr in 2015
  • Potential superfight has been talked about for years and could happen
  • Pacquiao believes he has a 'couple of years' left in his boxing career
AP 9 Nov 2014

Manny Pacquiao looked fighting fit as he took part in an open training session in preparation for his bout with Chris Algieri - but he did allow his focus to briefly shift past his title defence in November.
During his trip to Hong Kong, where he is promoting the November 23 fight, Pacquiao responded to a question from one of the fans who mobbed him in the street and revealed he is 'crossing his fingers' he will get his match-up with Floyd Mayweather Jnr in 2015.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather superfight has been touted for years and there have been endless false dawns as to if - and when - it could occur, but it seems the Filipino is keen for the match-up to happen.

Pacquiao told AFP: 'Hopefully that fight (with Mayweather) will happen by next year.

'I'm crossing my fingers that that fight will happen but right now my mind is already set to focus on my next fight but Algieri. I think the time to talk about that issue is after the fight.'

Unbeaten American Mayweather has defeated almost every single potential opponent on the planet and Pacquiao hopes he gets the chance to be the first to take him down before the Filipino hangs up his gloves.
'I'm not thinking yet about retirement,' he said. 'I will continue my boxing career for a couple of years, the journey will continue in my boxing career and we'll see what happens.'

Pacquiao revealed he believes he has two years left in him before he will retire from boxing altogether

In the meantime, Pacquiao takes on American Algieri in a defence of WBO world welterweight title this month.
And the 35-year-old is determined not to take his opponent lightly.

He continued:

'No, absolutely I'm not taking this fight lightly because I know his hunger and he's young and he wants to win the fight, but I will not let that happen.
'I'm not thinking about the knock-out because it will make me confident and careless.
'If the knock-out comes it will come but my focus is to make sure that 100-per-cent condition and killer instinct is there, the aggressiveness is there, so that's my focus in training.'

The Filipino fighter insisted he was focused on Algieri and will switch attention to Mayweather after the bout

Update VIDEOs-Floyd & Manny Meet for 1st Time>Agree to ReStart Talks on Mega Fight

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao: The Billion Dollar Fight Moves a Step Closer... So Will They Finally Get in a Ring Together and Make the Richest Event in Sporting History?

  • Manny Pacquiao fights Chris Algieri in Macau on Saturday
  • If Pacquiao fought Floyd Mayweather it could be worth $1billion
  • If the mega fight happens it could be held in China or Las Vegas

Daily Mail UK, 18 November 2014

The Billion Dollar Fight – no, not a movie, the actual promotion – will come closer to reality if Manny Pacquiao wins in Macau on Saturday night.

Say it slowly: One. Billion. Dollars.

That is the mind-blowing value now being placed upon the boxing match the world has long been desperate to see.
Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather can become the single richest event in sporting history and the enormity of the prize will surely be enough to break down the barriers which have prevented it from taking place thus far.

Manny Pacquiao fights American Chris Algieri in Macau on Saturday night

This bonanza is being made possible by the prospect of the first pay-per-view fight broadcast in China.

Promoter Bob Arum is predicting a subscription television audience in the People’s Republic in excess of 100 million. That would generate double the $300million which is being projected as the US pay-TV value of the Fight of the Century.

Yet the key to unlocking this treasure chest is not in the hands of the PacMan or the man who calls himself Money.
Arum is priming this enormous market by taking Pacquiao to Macau – the Portuguese version of Hong Kong - to headline promotions which also showcase Chinese boxing hero Zou Shiming.

Pacquiao could be set for a mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather if he comes through the fight with Algieri

Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum also promotes Chinese star Zou Shiming (left)

This 33-year-old has acquired iconic celebrity status in China by winning Olympic gold at home in Beijing in 2008 and retaining his title at London 2012.
After starting his professional career with five straight wins Shiming is closing in on a challenge for the world flyweight title, for which his Saturday bout at the Cotai Arena is being billed as a final eliminator.

Arum says:

‘Shiming is the driving force for taking pay-per-view into China. They idolise him and hundreds of millions have been watching him on regular television. Combine his appeal with Pacquiao-Mayweather and we are looking at numbers undreamed of before.’

Arum knows he will have to modify pay-per-view charges for the Chinese mainland.
‘We’re looking at $5 a buy,’ he says.

Mayweather poses with bundles of cash (top) - but could be set to earn even more if he fights Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather flaunts his money on instagram

Cheap, compared with the near $100 which will be the price in America. But multiply five dollars by one-tenth of the Chinese population of 1.36 billion and the figures amount to a phenomenal $650m.

A one per cent figure is the rule of thumb for the US (population 319 million) on Showtime or HBO – or both sharing as they did for Mike Tyson vs Lennox Lewis.
At $95 a buy - and a pay-TV record there in excess of three million viewers – and you exceed the $300m target.

Then comes the site fee from the host arena.
Macau is now the Las Vegas of the East, with all the major casinos on the Strip now operating and the high rollers from China helping push revenue above Nevada levels.

The Venetian Macao is hosting its second PacMan fight so expect a bidding war between the two giant gaming destinations, with the MGM Grand Garden – Mayweather’s preferred home-town venue - pitching for Vegas.

The Venetian Macao in China is hosting Pacquiao's fight with Algieri and would be keen on the Mayweather fight as well - should it ever materialise

Mayweather likes fighting at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and they could also bid for the mega-fight

TV rights for the rest of the world – including subscription sales in Britain – plus closed circuit cinema, the live gate and sponsorship, advertising and merchandising make up the rest of the billion dollar spectacular.

Arum has been building this project since being approached to promote in Macau. He says: ‘The massive enthusiasm for Shiming played into our long-term plan for boxing in mainland China.’

Broadcasts of a weekly boxing magazine show on Chinese TV and first promotions in Shanghai have helped pave the way.
Support for boxing there – where once it was banned – is reported to be forthcoming from the man now considered by many to be the most powerful Chinese leader since Chairman Mao, president Xi Jinping.

A fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao would be one of the most anticipated in boxing history

Not that it is essential for the record-breaking event to take place out here.
Pacquiao will enter the ring for his world title defence against New York’s Chris Algieri at midday on Sunday, Macau time,
That will be 11pm Saturday night in New York, 8pm in Los Angeles.

‘That would be the same time if took place in Vegas,’ says Arum. ‘So it works perfectly wherever it happens. In China they like getting up on the morning and switching on as they are having breakfast.’

Pacquiao is happy either way. The Philippines congressman says:

‘I love fighting in Vegas but when I box in Macau it feels like a home game. This is only a 90-minute flight from Manila and we’re expecting at least 5,000 of my fans who can’t always afford the cost of travelling all the way to America.
'And the love of boxing among hundreds of millions of Chinese is exciting for the sport. Boxing owes a great debt to Shiming for opening up his homeland.’

Pacquiao beat Timothy Bradley on points in his last fight, which was held in Las Vegas

Mayweather beat Marcos Maidana in their re-match in Las Vegas earlier this year

The PacMan has also boxed twice in front of 50,000-plus crowds in the high-tech Dallas Cowboys stadium in Texas, which is like to be another bidder for the Mayweather fight.
Both men are expected to be in action twice next year, in May and September.

This weekend Pacquiao finds himself fighting for a billion more reasons than his WBO welterweight title.
His purse here is believed to be a minimum of $25m.
He and Mayweather would be looking to split at least $250m from The Billion Dollar Fight.

Since he has already acceded to Mayweather’s several demands – including a 60 per cent majority of their earnings – he would thus bank not less than $100m, with Floyd Jnr getting a minimum $150m.

The PacMan is a heavy favourite to beat Algieri.
Assuming he does, the reluctant Mayweather can expect to receive an offer which no man who goes by the name Money can conceivably refuse.

Boxing: Floyd-Pacquiao to be Announced This Month?

Bleachers, 5 Dec 2014

Wilmar Patino ( Boxing’s Finest):
So according to my sources there are contracts being worked out for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Manny Pacquiao bout. The fight is to be announced this month as a “Christmas gift” to boxing fans.

It all has been carefully planned this way giving them the months needed to promote a fight of this size. This source knew about the rematch clauses Floyd was asking for about 2 months before it being news. They also seemed very relax and confident about everything I’m going to let you know in this article.

So I’m choosing to trust and believe the source and will report to you what I’ve been told.

So this is what they have told me as of now. The fight will take place before June of 2015 which of course leads me to believe it will happen in May. It seems that the MGM Grand has been selected as the venue, it is almost certain. It seems Floyd wants a rematch clause but it comes with a catch.

If Floyd wins Floyd has the option to rematch or to walk away from a 2nd fight.

If Pacquiao wins he has to have a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, but if Pacquiao loses there is no rematch unless Floyd chooses to have it. Of course the rematch clauses are still being worked out. As far as gloves, ring size etc. They have no specific information on that. All they do know is what I am reporting here.

My sources also told me that this contract has been worked on longer than we knew. They also told me that the Foot Locker commercial and this new Pacquiao that goes around calling out Mayweather more than ever is part of the promotional plan. This was supposedly already discussed to begin building up the fight. As you recall Mayweather’s last fight with Maidana was one of the first times in the post fight interview that we ever heard Mayweather truly entertain the idea of fighting Pacquiao.

As you have seen that Freddie Roach has sounded pretty confident in the negotiations in recent interviews. Now we have Roger Mayweather finally giving Manny Pacquiao credit for his performances and saying himself that Floyd Mayweather should fight Pacquiao because that’s what the fans want. Uncle Roger says this mostly with a little smile.

It’s all a part of building up the fight. This leads me to believe my sources are right. I’m not here to confirm this news and I hate to speculate, but I do believe it’s credible news and at least worth mentioning to you.

Hate to keep my hopes up, but everything seems to be pointing in the right direction and if my sources are right than we should be expecting an announcement before January and most likely during Christmas time. If not than definitely expect the announcement to be made in January or this fight is not happening. You definitely heard it here first!

Boxing VIDEOs-Khan Beats Alexander-Fights Mayweather Next?

Amir Khan Dominates Devon Alexander in Las Vegas...
-Will the Brit Now Go On to Face Floyd Mayweather?

  • Amir Khan was a class above Devon Alexander with a dominant showing
  • The Bolton welterweight won almost every round at the MGM Grand
  • Alexander had no answer to his opponent's speed and skill
  • Khan will now hope to face Floyd Mayweather in May back in Las Vegas

Daily Mail UK, 14 December 2014

The hottest property in the hardest game today is the young man from Bolton, England who was the poster boy for British Olympics ten years ago.

Amir Khan out-shone the neon glare of the fabled Las Vegas Strip on Saturday night.
So brilliantly did he bedazzle the much-respected three-time world champion Devon Alexander that this neon city which craves thrills and excitement is clamouring to see his name back in lights here soon.

The billion dollar question is whether the next time his fresh face appears on those giant electronic screens it will be alongside the glowering features of Floyd Mayweather.

There was no dissenting, not even by the most chauvinistic Americans, that the statement Khan delivered, as promised, was powerful enough to merit a mega-fight with the pound-for-pound king of the ring next year.
Even without the exclamation mark of a knock-out.

Khan’s up-and-down journey from a silver medal in Athens to a performance in Vegas as golden as those preposterous shorts he wore in the MGM Grand Garden has burnished a new crown jewel in British boxing.
The time has come for the nation to unite behind his utterly valid claim for a shot at ultimate glory.

Amir Khan, in the week of his 28th birthday, has grown into a cause for patriotic celebration.
He has catapulted himself into the elite company of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao at the summit of the most talent-packed division in boxing.
To be a welterweight at this point in fistic history is to be confronted by a veritable host of world-class fighters, if they will meet your challenge.
That has to be put to Mayweather if he retracts this weekend’s promise to give Pacquiao and the world the mega-fight after which they have been hungering for years.
If he is not the first alternate for Mayweather’s next fight, then Khan must assume that his performance damaged his own chances as drastically as it hurt Alexander’s fighting pride.

Mayweather reneged on a promise made a year ago to engage with Khan, whose legendary promoter Oscar De La Hoya said:

‘Now I can understand why Floyd doesn’t want to fight Amir. I wouldn’t have wanted to fight him after watching this.’

In unison with the other 7,767 in the arena, De La Hoya was on his feet not only cheering Khan but standing to applaud a virtuoso with his talents in full artistic flow.

The speed has always been phenomenal. Now the ring-craft has been perfected by long hours in the gym with his latest trainer, Virgil Hunter.
The balance – not only of feet and movement but in understanding when to attack without unnecessary risk – has been drilled into the completion of the gladiator package.

De La Hoya said:

‘Not only did he win virtually every round against a highly technical southpaw boxer – which is very complicated to achieve – but he showed why he would be big trouble for Floyd.’

For the record I gave Alexander only a sympathetic share of the eighth round, his best and in which he managed to land three or four solid left hooks.
That was the one occasion Khan wavered from the game plan devised by Hunter, who said:

‘ He was great and he corrected that mistake almost at once but it marks him down to 9.9 out of ten for briefly losing focus.’

Alexander was berated in his corner but the truth was he had no solution to the puzzle posed by Khan

Khan lands a right hand on Alexander and celebrates with promoter Oscar de la Hoya

Time and time again, Khan was first with the jab as he opened up a healthy lead over Alexander

Khan showed a new-found patience as he timed his shots to perfection to bewilder Alexander

Khan pictured at the post fight press conference after his emphatic win over Alexander in Las Vegas

The three official judgements varied narrowly either side of my 120-109 score-card.
Alexander was beaten beyond a quibble, saying:

‘I couldn’t get my punches off. I couldn’t land on him. I couldn’t do all the things we had worked on in training camp. He is very fast.’

So quick that when he really accelerated into lightning combinations from all angles the punches were a blur in the eyes of those at ringside. Alexander did not detect them at all until they thundered against each side of his head.
All that prevented a stoppage was Alexander’s courageous willingness to keep taking those blows – and the embarrassment to himself that came with them.

Alexander was previously a two-weight world champion but Khan made him look ordinary in Las Vegas

Khan lands a right hand on the button as the Brit showed why he is one of the best in the world

Khan celebrates his victory which earned him the WBC Silver welterweight title (right)

Fundamental to Hunter’s blueprint was the left hook off Khan’s jab, over Alexander’s right lead. Such was the precision as well as speed of Khan’s punching that those hooks landed with what must have been sickening monotony.
There were Khan converts all around the Grand Garden. They believed when he said:

‘I’m getting better as I get older. And wiser. And my best years are still ahead of me'.

Suddenly, those of us who have been saying for some time that he has real chance of inflicting Mayweather’s first defeat found allies in abundance.

Whisper it, please, in case Mr Money is eves-dropping.

If Mayweather was watching, as he said he would, he will have had plenty of food for thought as he went off to his favourite burger bar on the Strip.
King Khan is on his way to greatness. All aboard the roller-coaster – even the naysayers who have been reluctant to forgive him being stopped by Danny Garcia – ‘I’d love to avenge that defeat if I get the chance’ - and who still want to see Kell Brook knock him out, if that fight happens in Britain.
Love him or not,the tickets are worth every dime. Because with this young man it is a ride with never a dull moment.

Boxing re: VIDEOs-Floyd & Manny Meet for 1st Time>Agree to ReStart Talks on Mega Fight

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao looks ON
-Money Man Confirms 2 May 2015 Date

  • Floyd Mayweather looks set to finally fight Manny Pacquiao
  • The Money Man said it would 'absolutely' happen on May 2
  • Talks behind the scenes over Mayweather and Pacquiao's purse split
  • Amir Khan looks set to miss out on a mega fight with Mayweather
Daily Mail UK, 14 December 2014

Floyd Mayweather Jnr has named May 2 as the date for his shotgun wedding with Manny Pacquiao.

Speculation that the richest fight in boxing history is close to being made has been rife since the Pacman put on an impressive performance to defeat Chris Algieri in Macau two weeks ago.

Now Mayweather, put under pressure by one of his promotion companies' events, said:

'Will I fight Pacquiao? Absolutely.'

Floyd Mayweather's has confirmed that he will fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2015

Pacquiao (right) called out Mayweather to fight him after beating Chris Algieri in November

Mayweather says Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum has been preventing the fight from happening

Mayweather: I'll fight Pacquiao on May 2nd...

When asked if it would be his next fight he replied: 'absolutely.'
Pressed as to when that would be he confirmed the expected date for his next appearance, saying: 'May 2, absolutely'.

The undefeated holder of the mythical title of the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world went on:

'The public want this fight. I want it. the only stumbling block has been Bob Arum (Pacquiao's promoter) but I think both fighters want it. So it's time to get it on.'

Mayweather admitted for the first time that negotiations are underway 'behind the scenes', adding:

'I'm not ducking anyone, so let's get this on.
'Years ago we had problems with random blood and urine testing. I just want to have an even playing field.
'Now he's in a very, very tight situation with his loss to (Juan Manuel) Marquez and his loss to (Timothy) Bradley. His pay-per-view numbers are extremely low, so he's desperate. I wanted that fight a long time ago.'

Floyd Mayweather uploads clips of Manny Pacquiao being knocked down...

The news comes as a blow for Amir Khan (left) who beat Devon Alexander in Las Vegas on Saturday

For the man who calls himself Money, most of the discussions centre around the split of the biggest purse of all time.

It is estimated that the fight will gross a minimum $300million. Pacquiao has agreed to take the thin end of the 60-40 split, although there are suggestions that Mayweather may demand an even higher percentage if an agreement is to be finalised.

If Arum can pioneer pay-per-view in his new market, China, the revenue could rise to so far as to make this a billion dollar fight.

It is probable that Mayweather will insist on fighting in his adopted hometown of Las Vegas as usual. But Arum has been proposing the erection of a pop-up stadium in the famous Strip with a 50,000 capacity, more than double that of any existing arena in Sin City.

If Mayweather is indeed signalling the advent of the biggest fight of all time it will come as a disappointment for our own Amir Khan, who was hoping that his outstanding performance and victory here in Vegas on Saturday night over Devon Alexander would seal his own long-awaited super-fight with Mayweather.

Update re: VIDEOs-Floyd & Manny Meet for 1st Time>Agree to ReStart Talks on Mega Fight

Floyd Mayweather Mocks Amir Khan, Insists Manny Pacquiao Fight Is Next

19 Dec, 2014

Amir Khan's chances of stepping into the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr. have been severely dented after Money revealed "no one knows" who the British boxer is.

Mayweather remains focused on confirming his career-defining bout with Manny Pacquaio. The American has dismissed Khan's chances of landing such a fight—even after the 28-year-old's impressive win over Devon Alexander—because he doesn't draw a major crowd in the U.S.

Mayweather spoke at the World Boxing Council convention in Las Vegas, as reported by ABS-CBN (h/t Matt Morlidge of the Daily Mail):

Quote:
The other night I think he did 4,000 (attendance), so, Amir Khan, his name holds no weight. No one knows who Amir Khan is, except for people who are involved in boxing. My focus is Manny Pacquiao. Let's make it happen.
Pretty Boy originally called out Pacquiao during a Showtime interview (h/t Dan Rafael of ESPN), and despite a previous run of unsuccessful negotiations—down to "problems with random blood and urine testing," according to Mayweather, per ESPN—Pacquiao highlighted his intention to confirm a deal:

Quote:
Manny Pacquiao >>>
.@FloydMayweather, don't be a boxing humbug. Let's give the fans the fight they want. They have waited long enough.
Khan noted his chance to face Mayweather "definitely should happen" after he comfortably dissected Alexander, per Morlidge. His unanimous points decision win confirmed a fourth consecutive victory since his 2012 loss to Danny Garcia, but he remains something of a smaller name on American territory.

It could be put to Mayweather that Khan's name would draw a bigger crowd than anything he's ever experienced, if he was to step outside his Vegas comfort zone and over to England. Approximately 80,000 fans attended Carl Froch's second victory over George Groves at Wembley Stadium earlier this year, a number Khan vs. Mayweather could easily eclipse if the unlikely happened.

Many will question whether Mayweather wishes to be put out of his comfort zone at this stage in his career. Pacquiao's power has depleted, and he hasn't landed a knockout in nine fights since 2009, per BoxRec. His work remains methodical, but it's questionable whether he can still send a top-level opponent sprawling.

Mayweather is tuned to fight technically and will certainly fancy his chances now the Filipino star appears to be lacking some of the core power which made him so revered. Although Pacquiao's all-round game remains more dangerous than Khan's, Money may also prefer to avoid an opponent whose focus finely matched the sharpness of his speed against Alexander.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn believes Mayweather would find a bout against Khan "tough" when styles are taken into account, as reported by David Anderson of the Daily Mirror. The unbeaten fighter remains capable of easily overcoming any opponent put in front of him, but in the latter stages of his career, unnecessary risks don't need to be taken.

That's all Khan is. Mayweather knows this and is likely to continue goading the Brit until the day he hangs up his gloves. Like the drawn-out process of confirming a bout with Pacquiao, this allows Mayweather to keep a potential fight on the back-burner if it's ever needed.

Right now, it's all about the biggest draw for the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Pacquiao represents the one snippet in Mayweather's career which could be used to question his stature if it remains unfinished. As much noise as Khan makes, he will never hold this importance.

Update re: VIDEOs-Floyd & Manny Meet for 1st Time>Agree to ReStart Talks on Mega Fight

Amir Khan Hits Back at Floyd Mayweather:
-I'm Big Enough and I Really Believe I Can Beat Him

Amir Khan back in UK after win over Devon Alexander in Las Vegas last Saturday
Welterweight boxer wants to fight Floyd Mayweather next and has accused him of running scared
Khan will donate his Ł30,000 shorts to charity to help raise funds for school attacked by Taliban

Daily Mail UK, 26 December 2014

Amir Khan has hit back at insults from America’s flamboyant world champion Floyd Mayweather by claiming he is more famous than the welterweight known as the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.
And in a neat dig at Mayweather’s famed macho ego, Khan insisted he throws more punches in one round than the unbeaten world champion manages in an entire fight.

Mayweather, who has earned Ł300million in a unbeaten 47-fight career, is looking for a super-fight with Manny Pacquiao and dismissed Khan’s plea to fight him by claiming the Bolton fighter’s ‘name doesn’t carry enough weight’.

Amir Khan has announced that he will donate the Ł30,000 shorts he wore during his last week to charity

Khan posted two pictures of his refurbished gym and clothes from his fight with Devon Alexander on Thursday

But Khan, back in his native North West after beating Devon Alexander in Las Vegas at the weekend, was in fighting form as he held court at The Gloves Community Centre boxing gym in his hometown.

‘Mayweather says I’m not a big enough name but I am a bigger name than his opponents Maidana, Guerrero and Victor Ortiz put together.
‘I am known in places like India, Pakistan, Dubai and the UAE where they don’t even know who Mayweather is. India has a billion people, Pakistan has 180m people and I can’t even walk down the street there. I am bigger than Mayweather in a lot of places and I can help him become more famous, and earn more money.’

Khan isn’t worried that 36-year-old Mayweather could catch him out.

Khan was all smiles as he talked to the assembled press at his gym in Bolton UK

Khan is hoping his next fight will be against Floyd Mayweather next year

‘Mayweather throws maybe three hundred punches in a fight, I could manage that in a single round,’ he said.
‘Floyd will never hurt me. I have been knocked down in other fights but Mayweather is not the biggest puncher, not as big as Alexander. Our fight would be like a game of chess, hit-move. It would be about footwork and accuracy, nothing more, nothing less.
‘I speak to legends like Roy Jones and Thomas Hearns and they say I would beat him. Even the taxi driver I spoke to in Vegas said he hoped I would knock him out. The people there want to see him humbled
‘But Floyd is the boss. If he doesn’t want to fight me, he won’t. He’s not the type of guy where I could just turn up to his house and have a chat about it. But maybe all this stuff about me not being a big name is a sign he might be interested, he is starting to promote the fight. I don’t think him and Pacquiao will happen.’

Khan’s homecoming to England after wowing the Vegas fans has been bittersweet. His friend Anthony Crolla, who trains in the same gym, suffered a fractured skull and broken ankle after being hit on the head by a concrete slab as he confronted burglars.

Khan lands a left hand during his impressive win on decision against Alexander

Khan arrived back in Manchester along with his wife and daughter on Wednesday

Mayweather says Khan's 'name holds no weight' and that he will not fight him

And the terrorist attack that killed 132 schoolchildren in Pakistan, where Khan’s family originate from, has also affected him badly. The Ł30,000 pair of shorts he wore at the weekend, containing a gold waistband, will be auctioned off to raise funds for the survivors.

Talking about Crolla, Khan revealed that he had volunteered to be his pal’s sparring partner ahead of his world lightweight title shot against Richar Abril in Manchester on January 23, which has now been cancelled

‘Me and Crolla are good friends,’ said Khan. ‘I roomed with him as an amateur.
‘His trainer Joe Gallagher was at my fight in Vegas and I told him I would spar with Crollar to help him because Abril is a long fighter, and I have got long arms, I can replicate his style.

It is probable that Mayweather will insist on fighting Pacquiao, an eight-division champion, in his adopted hometown of Las Vegas

‘Then I got back and found he had been smashed over the head. I feel really bad, they have taken away his dream of fighting for a world title and tried to ruin his life, over nothing.’

Khan admits there must be doubts over whether Crolla can fight again.

‘When you have suffered something that bad, you have to understand the Board might not give him a license. It is very dangerous, is it worth that risk?
‘We fighters, even me in his position, would want to fight again, but sometimes you have to think of your health first.’

The attack on Crolla follows a knife attack on another potential Khan opponent, Kell Brook, in Tenerife earlier this year.
The two incidents were totally unconnected but Khan says he is always conscious of trying to stay away from trouble outside boxing.

‘I don’t like fighting, I only do it when I am in the ring,’ he said.

Manny Pacquiao Agrees to Terms for Potential Floyd Mayweather Fight on May 2

By Bleachersreport, 17 Jan 2015

Associated Press

The superfight boxing fans have dreamed of and long been denied between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. may at last be coming to fruition on May 2.

Promoter Bob Arum told Yahoo! Sports' on Tuesday that Pac-Man's camp has agreed to the terms, as have Mayweather's representatives, who've spoken with Arum. However, it's Mayweather's camp that is holding up an official agreement, according to Arum:
Quote:
I'm not trying to force anybody's hand, I'm just saying, 'Hey, we've agreed to everything, period.' The people we have talked to on Mayweather's side have agreed to everything. Now we need Mayweather to step up and say, 'Yeah, I'm on board. I agree.'
I think Manny has been very reasonable and demonstrated that he wants the fight to happen. Now, we're waiting on Floyd. That's not to say that Floyd has been obstinate, that Floyd won't do it, but we're waiting on him.
Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated passed along some thoughts from Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza and added details regarding Mayweather's desire to enter the ring with perhaps the biggest potential challenger to his perfect 47-0 record:

Quote:
Spoke to @StephenEspinoza recently. Said as far as Mayweather was concerned, he wants Pacquiao. No Plan B. Conversations are ongoing.
That said, I believe Mayweather-Pacquiao is as close as its been since 2011. Some big hurdles have been crossed. But a ways to go.

Another thing: HBO and Showtime aren't just going to magically agree to broadcast terms. These are two powerful entities. Complicated deal.

Robert Littal of BlackSportsOnline weighed in on Tuesday's news:

Quote:
It appears Pac has basically agreed to Mayweather's split and letting Mayweather get all the extra $$$. Great deal for Floyd IF he signs

Mayweather has spurned Pacquiao in the past, more recently due to a slump in form. Losses to Timothy Bradley by decision and rival Juan Manuel Marquez by knockout called into question Pac-Man's commitment to the sweet science.
Doubts have diminished since then, as Pacquiao has gone on to three unanimous-decision wins over Brandon Rios, Bradley and Chris Algieri. Those triumphs defeat any argument that Pacquiao isn't a worthy Mayweather adversary.
With both Pacquiao and Mayweather seemingly determined to comply, it appears as likely as ever that the two will square off in mere months. Whatever happens in the event that the fight comes to pass will shape both their legacies and go down as one of the biggest bouts in boxing history.

Boxing Pacquiao and Khan Talk Potential Fight

Pacquiao vs. Khan: Latest Details, Comments Surrounding Potential Fight

By Bleachers Report 26 Jan, 2015

.
Khan Speaks on Possibly Fighting Pacquiao, Why He Covets Mayweather Bout

Monday, Jan. 26

Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan are both awaiting word from Floyd Mayweather Jr. about the plans for his next fight. If he decides to go in another direction, both possible opponents agree it could result in them facing off with each other instead.

Ben Thompson of FightHype.com conducted an interview with Khan. One of the topics discussed was Khan possibly fighting Pacquiao:

Quote:
End of the day, it's a fight that the public would want to see. What a great storyline it would make because of Freddie Roach, my old trainer. On top of that, he spoke about my last fight; I spoke about his last fight. He was very impressed with my last performance. He said he wants to fight the best guys in the 147-pound division and he really believes I'm one of them, so that's why he says, look, that fight between us would be a massive fight. He did say he would like to fight me. I said the same thing. We just spoke about his interest in the fight. I mean, we didn't really tweet or anything, but when people found out that me and Manny Pacquiao were at the gym together, it went crazy. There were so many people. We had to get a lot of security to take me in. I think it's good that Manny Pacquiao sees my pull power.

There's nothing standing in the way of making this fight happen. I mean, this fight is going to happen basically if both parties have agreed to it. Now it's all about just sitting down and maybe letting my lawyer take over now. But other than that, I mean, we've agreed to it. He wants it. I want it. He's okay with fighting me. I'm okay with fighting him. I can't see any problems coming in between making the fight.
Khan also spoke about Mayweather and why he covets a fight with Mayweather:

Quote:
I know Floyd Mayweather just recently said that Amir Khan is not big enough. I mean, if he comes here and sees how big Amir Khan is, I think he'll know better. With the press, with the fans, I mean, even non-boxing fans know who Amir Khan is, so how can Floyd Mayweather say that Amir is not a big name. I'm sure Manny Pacquiao saw how big I am here and maybe that interested him in the fight also.

Obviously with Pacquiao, at one time, he was on the same level as Mayweather, but then he had a couple of losses recently. Mayweather never tasted defeat and beating a guy who has never tasted defeat is much bigger. Everyone thinks he's untouchable because he's not been beaten. I mean, obviously, we do agree that he's untouchable at the moment, but I really believe that beating someone like Mayweather would be a bigger win and much bigger than beating someone like Pacquiao.
Arum Speaks on Potential Pacquiao vs. Khan Fight
Friday, Jan. 23
:

Quote:
Dan Rafael of ESPN passed along confirmation from Top Rank CEO Bob Arum. He said Pac-Man would be willing to stage the fight in King Khan's native England.
Arum said if no Floyd fight that Manny will fight on May 30 on HBO PPV. Said he would consider going to England for a Khan fight.
Jeff Powell of the Daily Mail provided comments from both fighters, who met at the Fitzroy Lodge Boxing Club in London on Friday. Khan left several possibilities open, including potential bouts with Pacquiao at Wembley Stadium or Abu Dhabi.

Quote:
"I've been looking at Wembley, which would be a great stage for me and Manny, and Abu Dhabi is very much in the running," he said. "It was great seeing Manny again. We talked a bit about old times and also about the future. Although we have this friendship, if fighting each other makes sense, then it can certainly happen."
The eight-division world champion said his camp has done everything in its power to set up the long-awaited encounter with Mayweather. He conceded if it doesn't work out, he and Khan may put their friendship aside and fight each other.

"Yes, there's a big possibility, nothing personal, we're just doing our job in the ring," Pacquiao said. "It's not difficult for us because we respect each other and we're just doing our job in the ring."

It's an interesting situation because any combination of the three fighters would make for an intriguing bout. The boxing world is just forced to wait for Mayweather's camp to makes its choice before the rest of the dominoes fall into place.

Pacquiao is once again a top draw after it looked like he may be nearing the end following back-to-back losses to Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez. He's looked nothing short of dominant since then, however, scoring three straight victories by unanimous decision.

Khan suffered a lull of his own, losing to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, but he has also rebounded nicely with four straight wins. He's still waiting for his opportunity to fight one of the sport's biggest names. It sounds like that should finally happen one way or another next time out.

Pacquiao is quoted in the Daily Mail report stating they are expecting to receive further word from Mayweather by next week.

If that's the case, it won't be long before the boxing world gets a better outlook for the months ahead.

Update re: VIDEOs-Floyd & Manny Meet for 1st Time>Agree to ReStart Talks on Mega Fight

Fighting Manny Pacquiao -Is Floyd Mayweather's Only Option to Improve His Legacy?

AP, 26 Jan 2015

It’s not dead yet, but it sure feels like it’s dying.

The Los Angeles Time’s Lance Pugmire reported Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have been locked in talks—again—for a potential superfight that would shatter all sorts of boxing revenue records, rising to the level of rival networks HBO and Showtime holding secret meetings on jointly broadcasting, according to ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael. But it feels like it’s about to fall apart again.

And judging by the reaction of fans and media, one man will receive the lion’s share of the blame. At least from the mainstream of sports fans who aren’t hopelessly wedded to one side or the other.

Mayweather is a prodigious talent, and while there are two sides to every tale, the blame game almost doesn’t even matter anymore.
You can blame Floyd, or Manny, or Bob Arum or the Norse god Thor if you like, but at the end of the day, Mayweather is literally at the point where nothing but a Pacquiao showdown will cut it.

47-0.

World championships in five weight divisions.

Undisputed pound-for-pound king and the best man in history at using boxing as a vehicle for personal enrichment.

Ethan Miller/Getty Images

All of the above.

But does he want to go down as the guy who never proved his greatness against the man universally recognized as his top challenger? Does he want that asterisk to sit on his page in the history books like an ugly stain that allows people to call into question the depth of his contributions to the sport?

Fans of boxing certainly hope the answer to those two inquiries is a firm no, but there are fewer and fewer reasons for optimism with each hour that passes without definitive word of what’s happening.

Alex Ariza, Pacquiao’s former strength and conditioning coach who recently took a similar position with Mayweather, threw some cold water on the simmering fires on Thursday, per ABS/CBN:

Quote:
Mayweather-Pacquiao is] not going to happen. We’re fighting May 2nd but it’s not going to be Manny Pacquiao. Hopefully, Bob Arum will blow away in the wind or whatever. As soon as we get rid of him we can get it on.”
Was Ariza, a controversial figure who was fired by Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach, authorized to speak on behalf of Mayweather?
Doubtful. That job is reserved for the man himself and, up until recently, his right-hand man Leonard Ellerbe.
Mayweather gave his first comments on the subject since it was reported Pacquiao’s side had agreed to terms last week to Shade 45 Radio;
Quote:
Everything that everybody is just insinuating, what everybody been saying on TV is false. It’s not true at all…
Do I want to fight Pacquiao? Absolutely! Are we negotiating? Absolutely! But has the fight been made? Not at all…Hopefully it’s Mayweather-Pacquiao. Of course we’re trying to make the fight happen between me and Pacquiao. Are we negotiating? Absolutely we are negotiating. But Pacquiao said that he agreed to everything. What did you agree to? You have no say so. You have a boss. That’s called Top Rank Promotions.
Hopefully we can make this fight happen. But once again, we have to look at his pay-per-view numbers. His last fight didn’t even do 300,000 homes. So let’s make this make sense. I mean, he did get knocked out not too long ago. No matter what you say, Floyd Mayweather is still winning. When they take shots at Floyd Mayweather, he’s still winning. He’s still making hundreds of millions.
Let’s unpack all of that.

What people are reporting on TV is that Pacquiao has agreed to terms on the fight. The Filipino icon recently reiterated that point, and he took an uncustomary shot at Mayweather via Twitter'

Quote:
I can easily beat @FloydMayweather, I believe that.
There are also rumors, long-speculated and reported on Twitter last week by ESPN.com senior boxing writer Dan Rafael, that a middleweight rematch between Mayweather and WBC/lineal 160-pound champion Miguel Cotto is imminent.

Quote:
Extremely strong chatter than Mayweather-Cotto 2 is imminent
It tells you a lot about the dissatisfaction among boxing’s hardcore fanbase that a rematch with Cotto is treated as such a disappointment. Almost like it’s a fight unworthy of the name.

In a world without Pacquiao, this would be treated as a high-stakes contest with huge historical and legacy implications.

Cotto is noticeably better now than at the time of the first fight, having latched on to Roach like he was a life raft in the middle of the ocean, and a Mayweather win would give him a world title in a sixth weight class. More significantly, he’d become the first fighter to simultaneously hold titles in three separate weight divisions since the great Henry Armstrong.
Granted, Armstrong did it with far fewer available belts and weight divisions, but it would still be an impressive feather in Mayweather’s cap.

Al Bello/Getty Images

Does he want to fight Pacquiao?

Only one person knows the answer to that question.

Mayweather has been rather vocal on the subject in recent months, telling Showtime’s Steve Farhood he does in December, but words are just wind. Actions prove their value.

His claims that negotiations are ongoing might soothe some nervous fans just sitting around waiting for the other shoe to drop, but there are a few things here that don’t add up entirely.

Mayweather’s dislike for Arum and Top Rank is well documented. But to imply that Pacquiao has no say on the status of negotiations is simply not accurate, and besides, it was Arum, not Pacquiao, who stirred the pot by telling Iole they were on board with a 60-40 purse split, random blood testing and a May 2 fight in Las Vegas.
Comments on the specifics of the reported deal were wholly absent from this extensive interview. Was that on purpose or by accident?

You decide.

It’s hard to understand Mayweather’s obsession with Pacquiao’s pay-per-view numbers and drawing power. Well, it’s not, but the relevance to fans is zip.

Anyone who pays any sort of attention to the business realities of boxing knows that Floyd is the bigger box-office attraction. He’s participated in the two highest-grossing fights in boxing history—in 2007 with Oscar De La Hoya and 2013 with Canelo Alvarez—and deserves a higher cut of the purse.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt.

But how far down the rabbit hole does this go? The 60-40 purse split reported by Iole seems like a fair number—Pacquiao has come down from 55-45 in 2012—and, either way, fans simply don’t care about this stuff.

If you’re one of Mayweather’s rabid defenders, you’re going to eat this stuff up. But if you’re looking at it with any sense of detachment, just hoping the two will finally trade fists and not words, you can’t help but shake your head.

Mayweather is indisputably right about one thing.

He does keep winning, and he does keep making millions.

But there are different types of winning.

Winning in the ring is what Mayweather does best, but beating anyone but Pacquiao, by this point, is largely meaningless.

Winning the perception battle is a whole different question, and it’s the one place where Floyd’s unblemished record takes a hit.
END..

All about $$$, eh guys?..

  • They sat across the court from each other during the first half
  • The pair had a short conversation at half-time and swapped numbers
  • Mayweather is expected to announce his next fight for May 2 this week
Daily Mail UK, 28 January 2015

Boxing superstars Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao moved a step closer to a much anticipated mega-fight after meeting for the first time at a basketball game in Miami and agreeing to start negotiations over a Ł200m bout. Mayweather went over to Pacquiao at half-time of the Miami Heat vs Milwaukee Bucks clash and the pair shook hands, chatted briefly and exchanged phone numbers. Boxing fans hope they will finally agree to meet in the ring later this year.

Pacquiao said: 'He gave his number to me and said we will communicate with each other.'

Fight fans will be hoping the exchange leads to the mega-bout the world is waiting for

The local TV channel broadcasting the game have footage of the meeting (above) but what was said was not audible.

Mayweather and Pacquiao had never spoken face to face before, but when asked to clarify if the exchange meant the two would negotiate directly about meeting in the ring, Pacquiao said that was the case.

Mayweather had a courtside seat next to the Heat bench, directly across from Pacquiao's seat on the opposite sideline. And after finally meeting on the side of the basketball court, the two fighters may be getting closer to a long anticipated bout in the ring, which would be the richest in boxing history.
Pacquiao is a noted basketball fan and is friends with Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, who is of Filipino descent, while Mayweather has been a regular attendee at Heat games for several years.
According to Pacquiao's adviser Michael Koncz, the meeting between the two boxers was not planned as the Pac-Man was due to fly to Los Angeles on Tuesday but his flight is believed to have been cancelled, so he went the game instead.

Koncz said: 'Floyd walked over and he and Manny had a nice little talk. I'm not at liberty to say what they said, but it was a good conversation.'

Pacquiao has been in Miami for several days because he was judging the Miss Universe competition and he is now due to fly to LA on Wednesday.
A mega-fight between the two has been in the offing for a number of years – but suggestion is that it could finally be announced for this year.

Mayweather looked happier when he was able to sit and take in the action at the American Airlines Arena

Pacquiao was also all smiles when he wasn't face to face with the man he could get in the ring with this year

Pacquiao and Mayweather sat on opposite sides of the court during the action in Miami

The Milwaukee Bucks beat the Miami Heat 109-102 but the game was overshadowed by the boxers

Pacquiao won his last fight convincingly on points against Chris Algieri in Macau

Pacquiao is confident he would beat Mayweather if the two ever did meet in the ring

The pair hugged and swapped phone numbers but there wasn't much smiling during the exchange - the man on the right of the shot is the Filipino fighter's adviser Michael Koncz

Pound-for-pound king Mayweather is rumoured to be announcing his next opponent this weekend during the Super Bowl in order to gain maximum exposure.

Mayweather is due to fight again on May 2 in Las Vegas, and aside from a mega-fight with Pacquiao, other potential opponents include a rematch with Miguel Cotto or a meeting with Britain's Amir Khan.

But Mayweather said last month that he's ready to fight the Pac-Man in May.

Pacquiao responded a few days later on social media, telling Mayweather that it's time to 'give the fans the fight they want.'
In recent days, another tweet was posted on Pacquiao's account where he said:

'I can easily beat @FloydMayweather, I believe that.'

Pacquiao has previously said that he's agreed to all of Mayweather's terms and conditions for the fight, including a 60-40 purse split in the American's favour and agreement on drug testing. But as yet no contract has been drawn up.

One of the options open to Mayweather for the May 2 date is a rematch with Miguel Cotto

If Mayweather opts to fight Cotto then Pacquiao could turn his attentions to Amir Khan

Floyd Mayweather uploads clips of Manny Pacquiao being knocked down;..

And with Mayweather and Pacquiao pictured in the same room together for the first time, staff at the American Airlines Arena in Miami were happy to add to the speculation by putting pictures of the two boxers on the big screen with the question 'Coming in 2015?'.

Mayweather, the WBA and WBC welterweight champion, hasn't lost in 47 fights, while Pacquiao, the WBO welterweight titleholder, is 57-5-2 in his career.

If, however, Mayweather opts for a rematch with Cotto, that paves the way for Pacquiao to possibly fight Khan. The former stablemates met last week in London to discuss a potential 2015 showdown.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao: Bob Arum Talks Possible $300 Million Split

3 Mar 2015

Most expect Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. to receive a king's ransom for their involvement in their superfight, which is scheduled for May 2. Speaking during ESPN's Friday Night Fights (via BoxingScene.com's Miguel Rivera), Top Rank CEO Bob Arum speculated just how much money the two stars could earn.

"We have to do the math," Arum said. "After adding everything, I think the [amount of money] to distribute will be $300 million—60 percent for Mayweather, which is $180 million, and 40 percent for Pacquiao, which is $120 million."

He added that the number of pay-per-view buys could hit four or five million, which would shatter the record of 2.4 million buys that Mayweather set against Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.

ESPN Boxing posted the extended interview on Twitter. In it, Arum talks about various topics, including how Mayweather vs. Pacquiao came together and what kind of relationship he currently has with Mayweather

Fans have quite literally waited years to see Mayweather and Pacquiao finally clash. All of the behind-the-scenes wrangling and public potshots between the two fighters did nothing to quell interest.

This is the last must-see event boxing has for the foreseeable future, and few things galvanize the American sporting public like a high-profile prizefight.

Boxing Odds/Predictions for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Superfight

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Full Odds and Predictions for Superfight

By 27 Mar, 2015

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images

As the weeks slowly count down toward May 2, when Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao step in the ring for the biggest boxing showdown in years, the odds seem to be signaling a shift in how betting is going.

An unfortunate subplot to this fight is the stigma of knowing these two didn't meet at their absolute peak, around 2009-10, which presents the dilemma of wondering how the odds might have looked back at that time.
The best part of this fight is there will at least be a definitive answer to the question of this era's best fighter. There can be a quibble about how many prime years these two have left, or if they are still in their primes, but it's another story for another day.

Instead, let's dive into a discussion about where the odds are at right now and how the early predictions analysis sees things playing out.

(SEE SCREENSHOT BELOW)

Mayweather will always be a favorite until he loses, because that's just the nature of sports betting. Even if an opponent is believed to be better, oddsmakers are always going to err on the side of caution because that zero in the loss column speaks volumes.

Yet Pacquiao is almost being dismissed by the oddsmakers. He's not as big of an underdog against Floyd Mayweather as someone like, say, Marcos Maidana, but he isn't exactly close to getting even odds.

One reason Pacquiao deserves more credit for his chances in this fight was pointed out by Miguel Cotto, who knows both superstars well, when he spoke to the New York Post:

“After working with Freddie (Roach) I think Freddie is going to be huge in the fight,” Cotto said. “I’m going for Manny.”

Roach told Yahoo Sports about a change in Pacquiao's training regimen to cure a long-standing cramp issue in the star fighter's legs:
We did change his running schedule because I don't like him running the hills six days a week. I've got him on the track a lot more now doing fast sprint-type workouts instead of hill workouts. I think it's better for the older fighters sometimes to stay away from the hills so much.
When he was young, it was OK, but he's getting a little older and the wear and tear of going up that hill, which is all concrete, is really not good for his legs. On the days he spars, he goes [to run at] Pan Pacific Park, and on the other days, we go over to UCLA.

In addition to avoiding cramps, that's a big point to discuss in Pacquiao's training. He's at a point, being 36 years old, where constantly running up a hill won't change much for him physically. His stamina is in a class all by itself and has shown no signs of slowing down as age has caught up to him.

The change in this approach will allow Pacquiao to focus more on building his quickness, particularly in the upper body and hands. Mayweather's success comes from being faster than everyone he fights, which would stand to be the case in this fight.

Give Pacquiao, as well as Roach, credit for figuring out what his opponent does better and addressing it in training, even if it came through simply trying to avoid leg cramping.

Ethan Miller/Getty Images

As for Mayweather's tactic, he seems like the kind of fighter who is going to make sure he sets the tempo and pace of the fight. That's not to say he isn't capable of change when necessary, but being as fast as he is gives him more leash than other fighters.
One fun development from training are reports from anonymous sources that Mayweather was knocked out in sparring by Zab Judah, who has since denied those claims. It doesn't seem likely that Money is going to be dropped in sparring, so believing is your choice.

An aspect of Mayweather's game that Roy Jones Jr. believes to be underrated is power, which he told CBS Sports about:
Pacquiao may think he'll be able to outwork him and not worry about (Mayweather's) power because he hasn't had to use it. Now that he's gotten older he will use his power, and that's going to be a bigger problem for Pacquiao. Because, to me, the only way for him to beat Pacquiao is to get him out of there.
The recent numbers certainly back up Jones' claim, as CompuBox had Mayweather landing 178 out of 274 power punches attempted in the first fight with Maidana

What outcome are you rooting for on 2 May?

Floyd Mayweather wins by KO or TKO Floyd Mayweather wins by decision (split or unanimous) Manny Pacquiao wins by KO or TKO Manny Pacquiao wins by decision (split or unanimous) Draw ???

When you combine Mayweather's precise accuracy, to go along with solid power at 146 pounds, Pacquiao will have to be as perfect as ever with his punching and keep his head out of striking distance.

If you recall when Pacquiao lost to Juan Manuel Marquez in December 2012, which Pac-Man was winning handily at the time, he left his head open in the sixth round and ate a right hand on the jaw that had him seeing stars.

Mayweather isn't as strong as Marquez, but he's perfectly capable of scoring a knockout in a situation like the one Pacquiao set up in that fight.

The outcome of this fight will be one of the most discussed in sports for a long time.
Mayweather is in that rare class of combat sports athletes where he can't be expected to lose until after it happens for the first time.
Pacquiao will be the greatest challenge in his career, but Money will be celebrating his biggest win in a pile of cash.

=Mayweather defeats Pacquiao by our unanimous decision

Pacquiao's Recurring Calf Cramps Causing Concern

Bleachers, 31 March 2015

LOS ANGELES — The curious case of Manny Pacquiao's calf muscles took another twist last weekend, when the Filipino boxer missed his routine morning roadwork session a little more than a month out from his May 2 mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather.

With his regular running partners having assembled outside his Han**** Park house just after 6 a.m. on Saturday, strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune arriving soon after, and a throng of excited fans waiting a few miles down the road at Pan Pacific Park, word soon filtered out that the 36-year-old would be a no-show.

"Manny won't run today," Fortune said. "It is not the end of the world, but we do it for a reason."

Trainer Freddie Roach sparked some concerns earlier last week by admitting that Pacquiao had been suffering from cramps in his legs, claiming they were being treated by a combination of massage and a special cream that costs $1,800 per bottle.

Meanwhile Fortune, a no-nonsense Australian whose own boxing career saw him battle heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis in 1995, has a vital role to play in Team Pacquiao that goes beyond simple drills and exercises.

As well as leading him through advanced plyometric routines, Fortune must also analyze Pacquiao's mind, to see if his reluctance to train, like on Saturday, is lethargy, tiredness from his grueling physical sessions, or something more serious.

"I would like him to get up and move around at least, get out the stiffness from the work we have been doing," Fortune told USA Today Sports. "He is not going to run, but we will make up for it with the work we do later.

"I make it hard for him but he needs to suck it up. Fighting Mayweather is not easy, either. There are always consequences."

The gravity of the Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena, with the bout expected to reward each man to the tune of more than $100 million, means that every scrap of information about the preparation process is closely scrutinized.

Pacquiao's calves are a particular point of focus, as he has suffered discomfort in that region of his body for the past several years.

While he is motivated to cause a significant upset and hand Mayweather his first defeat as a professional, there is also a danger of over-training.

Running partner Rodel Mayol, a former WBC light flyweight world champion, insisted Pacquiao's old "hunger" had returned and that until Saturday, his runs had been full of spirit and intensity.

"For this fight it is amazing," Mayol said. "I see he doesn't get tired, not like before he fought (Chris) Algieri, (Shane) Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez – then he took it easy. This time he is very motivated."

With Pacquiao's sparring sessions and his workouts with Fortune scheduled to increase in intensity, all eyes will be on the Filipino star's much-discussed calves, to see if they have any bearing on the outcome of May's big showdown.

Mayweather Rejects $5 Million Penalty for Failed Drug Test

Floyd Mayweather has formally rejected Manny Pacquiao's offer of a $5 million penalty clause should either fighter fail a drug test before or after their May 2 mega-fight, Pacquiao's advisor, Michael Koncz, told USA TODAY Sports.

Pacquiao, according to Koncz, had suggested a contractual agreement that would force either the Filipino star or Mayweather, the world's top pound-for-pound boxer, to pay the other man in the event of a positive test.

"It was very simple," Koncz said by telephone. "If Manny failed a test, he would have to pay $5 million. If Floyd failed, he would have to pay $5 million."

The deal was sent to Mayweather's legal representatives but did not form part of the official term sheet for the bout, which stipulated full drug testing, to be carried out by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

Koncz said that Pacquiao's attorney, David Marroso, received notice that the arrangement had been rejected from Mayweather's representative, Jeremiah Reynolds, on Thursday.

Mayweather cited Pacquiao's initial refusal to undergo full drug testing as the primary reason for negotiations breaking down when a fight between the pair was discussed back in 2009.

That year, Pacquiao filed a lawsuit, alleging that Mayweather had defamed him by suggesting Pacquiao had used performance-enhancing drugs. The case was settled in 2012.

Mayweather's advisor Leonard Ellerbe did not respond to requests for comment from USA TODAY Sports. Reynolds, reached by telephone, said queries regarding Pacquiao's offer should be directed to Ellerbe.

Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum was quizzed about the potential $5 million agreement last week and said he understood the reason Mayweather's camp would not accept was because if either side did fail a drug test, the other camp would be able to sue for far more than $5 million.

The upcoming fight is expected to be the most lucrative of all-time, and early predictions are that it could top three million pay per view sales. The purse will be split 60-40 in favor of Mayweather, who could make as much as $120 million.
Arum was not immediately available for comment.

Floyd Mayweather's Mouthguard Costs $25K and Has $100 Bills Inside

Bleachers, 6 April 2015

Floyd Mayweather -- Rocking $25k Mouthpiece ... With Real $100 Bills...
Mayweather is so MONEY -- his mouthpieces are stuffed with REAL $100 BILLS ..TMZ Sports has learned.
This is no joke ...

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is known as Money for a reason: Even if it's something as humble as a mouthguard, he's prepared to drop $25,000 on it.
TMZ has tracked down the man who provided him with the mouthpiece, a dentist named Dr. Lee Gause.

Mayweather's guard is customized with gold, diamonds and, yes, even real $100 bills woven into the design.

Given Mayweather's defence, he might not even get hit enough for fans to see it on the night of his May 2 fight with Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.

Boxing re: VIDEOs-Pacquiao/Mayweather: Mayweather Wins >Judges Decision

Mayweather-Pacquiao Countdown:
Analyzing Fighters' Strategies for Superfight

Bleachers, 28 April 2015

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao could not be more different, both in their personalities and fighting styles.

Mayweather brings a controlled rage into the ring, always dictating the pace even without throwing punches. He's a defensive fighter, first and foremost, using that to set up his offensive game plan. Pacquiao is an angry, aggressive fighter who uses his speed and power to force opponents into submission.

Both styles have been perfect fits for the two fighters. Mayweather has used his to build a perfect 47-0 resume; Pacquiao has 57 wins in 64 career fights and went nearly seven years without a loss from 2005 to 2012.

On May 2, the debate about which style works better will finally be settled when Mayweather and Pacquiao settle their professional differences. With so much being written about how the two fighters are approaching the battle, here's a closer look at their strategies and what it says about their mindset.

The Mayweather Strategy

John Locher/Associated Press

During the first episode of Showtime's Inside Mayweather vs. Pacquiao documentary, Mayweather says two things that stand out in his preparation for Pacquiao. The first is that sometimes it's necessary to fight harder, while other times, a more relaxed approach works.

The latter part isn't Mayweather saying he coasts but rather waits to see how his opponent will try making a move. That allows him to plan a strategy before going all-in.

The second discussion point is how Mayweather notes he will have to use a "heavy" slide moving right to attack Pacquiao due to Pac-Man's southpaw stance. Fighting is about comfort, at least, as much as a combat sport can be comfortable.

Mayweather's camp also is doing a lot of talking about what he plans to do in the fight. For instance, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe went on RingTV with Andreas Hale and left no doubt about what he expects to see:

"Floyd Mayweather is going to try to take Manny Pacquiao's head off, and you can count on that happening," Ellerbe said. "He's looking to finish him off, and I strongly believe that will happen."

A knockout would certainly be a change of pace for Mayweather, who hasn't ended a fight since Victor Ortiz in September 2011. If there is a fighter to end that four-year streak for Pretty Boy, it would be Pacquiao.

As great as Pacquiao is, he can leave himself open to a punch, to which he has admitted. Here's what Pac-Man told ESPN's Dan Rafael after Juan Manuel Marquez dropped him in December 2012:

"I was careless. He's not an easy opponent," Pacquiao said. "I did my best, but that's boxing. That's sports. I thought I got him in the last couple of rounds, but I got hit by a strong punch. I never expected that punch."

Mayweather isn't the powerful striker Marquez is, though he's not without power, as evidenced by 26 career knockouts in 47 career wins. The allure of a knockout to definitively say he's better than Pacquiao, instead of letting judges decide, will certainly appeal to Mayweather.

Yet, the strategy that has worked best for Mayweather as he has gotten older is fighting smartly and accurately, instead of trying to end things.

For instance, per CompuBox stats (via Josh Slagter of MLive.com), Mayweather's last fight against Marcos Maidana highlighted the undefeated star's precision:

As has become custom over his recent fights, Mayweather had pinpoint accuracy with his power shots. He landed 102 of 177 (58 percent) against Maidana. He landed 65 percent in the first fight and now has had four consecutive fights in which he's landed at least 50 percent of his power shots.

There's no reason to change a strategy that has worked so well for so long. Mayweather may not be able to relax as much because of the way Pacquiao fights, but he has proven time and again to adapt like a chameleon, thanks to his speed and ability to make an opponent miss his body with attacks.

The onus is on Pacquiao to prove he can keep putting pressure on Mayweather from the first bell to the last, not the other way around because Mayweather doesn't have to fight like a mad man to attack.

The Pacquiao Strategy

Jae C. Hong/Associated Press

Judging by recent buyrates for Pacquiao's fights, fans have perhaps become ambivalent toward the 36-year-old and his choice of opponents in recent years. For instance, boxing businessman Rick Glaser said Pacquaio's last bout with Chris Algieri did around 300,000 pay-per-view buys, per Chris Williams of Boxing News 24.

Besides not fighting the most thrilling competition, Pacquiao's career had become stale. While no one denies he's still terrific, there's not much fun and excitement that comes from watching him casually pick apart someone like Algieri or Timothy Bradley.

Leave it to a superfight against Mayweather to bring out the angry Pacquiao, who had a string of seven knockouts or technical knockouts in an 11-fight span from 2005 to 2009. (Eight, if you want to include Oscar De La Hoya quitting after eight rounds.)

Speaking to David Anderson of The Mirror, Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach believes the animosity his fighter has for Mayweather is going to have a profound impact on the fight:

For the first time in my life, I get the real strong feeling Manny doesn't like his opponent. I think it's going to carry over in this fight and I feel we'll light this guy up because Manny knocks out guys that he doesn't like. That's how he's been from day one. So I'm betting a knockout.

Going back to the feeling of ambivalence, maybe after the fourth fight with Marquez, Pacquiao hit a point in his career when he knew the opponents weren't in his league and decided to coast.

Now, with Mayweather on the horizon, Pacquiao is fighting someone who is, at least, an equal fighter to him. It gets the mojo going, like when he first fought De La Hoya in 2008.

Yet, this fight also has been a series of mind games between the two superstars. Mayweather showed up late to his media workout, which let Pacquiao play the good guy during his session for showing up early and engaging with everyone he possibly could.

Jae C. Hong/Associated Press

During Mayweather's workout, he made a comment about Pacquiao being reckless. Pacquiao responded to that at his workout, via The Associated Press (h/t Fox Sports):

"Reckless fighter? That's how people like me and love me, because they like an exciting fight," Pacquiao said. "We call this boxing, (and) boxing is more punching. We talk about punching."

Punching is great, and Pacquiao does it a lot, but there has to be a method to the madness because Mayweather is so smart. Per CompuBox stats (via ESPN's Rafael), Pacquiao's win over Algieri was more about what Algieri didn't do:

"Pacquiao landed 229 of 669 punches (34 percent), according to CompuBox punch statistics, while Algieri connected on only 108 of 469 blows (23 percent), few of which had any serious snap on them," Rafael wrote.

If Pacquiao is only landing 34 percent of his punches against Algieri, what's he going to look like against Mayweather?

By all accounts, Pacquiao wants to turn this into a slug fest. That's his best path to victory because slowing things down plays right into Mayweather's hands. Pacquiao can't be sloppy with his aggressiveness, as was the case against Marquez, or else this fight will be over before it begins.

Daily Mail UK, 3 May 2015

A crestfallen Manny Pacquiao has told the world's media he lost the fight of the century to Floyd Mayweather because a shoulder injury left him unable to use his right hand.

It is estimated a worldwide audience of 400million - including thousands of people in Pacquiao's hometown - tuned in to watch American Mayweather earn victory with a unanimous points decision in front of a star-studded crowd in Las Vegas.
Mayweather stands to pocket upwards of $180million from the super fight, while Pacquiao will take home around $120million.

After a build-up of almost five years, the pair took to the ring at the MGM Grand on Saturday night and battled through a closely-fought 12 rounds, with little separating them.
But it was the American who came out on top at the end of the multi-million dollar spectacle - retaining his undefeated record in front of a host of celebrities including Jay Z, Beyonce, Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg and Donald Trump.

The beaten Filipino, 36, has since blamed his defeat on a shoulder injury and said he wanted to have an injection before the fight but the Nevada Athletic Commission refused.

Dejected: Manny Pacquiao answered questions from the world's media during the post-fight news conference following his devastating defeat to unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather. The 36-year-old Filipino blamed his loss on a shoulder injury sustained in the build up

Post fight: Mayweather extended his unbeaten career record to 48-0 with the victory. His opponent Pacquiao grimaced as he reached for the shoulder which he said stopped him from using his right hand during the fight of the century

Respect: The 38-year-old Mayweather embraced his opponent at the post-fight news conference. Pacquiao said he wanted to have an injection in his shoulder before the fight but the Nevada Athletic Commission refused

A bitter blow: Manny Pacquiao lowers his head as he sits with promoter Bob Arum (right). Arum claimed he informed the Commission of the injury five days before the fight and defended the decision not to cancel the bout, the most lucrative in boxing history

Unbeaten: Floyd 'Money' Mayweather confirmed after the bout that he will have one more fight in September, citing a deal with Showtime

The two opponents congratulate each other at the end of the fight. Pacquiao, however insists he should have come out on top

Mayweather and his entourage poses with his title belts after defeating Pacquiao. He confirmed he will be fighting once more in September

At the end of the bout the Filipino was visibly disappointed with the result. He said: 'I thought I won the fight. He didn't do nothing'

He said: 'Three weeks before the fight I got a tear in my right shoulder. It got better but it wasn't 100 per cent.'
Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum claimed he informed the Commission of the injury five days ago and defended the decision not to cancel the fight, the most lucrative in boxing history.
He said: 'Athletes always fight hurt and we felt the work that was done on the shoulder during training would enable him to use his right hand.'

Mayweather hit back at the claims, saying he too was carrying injuries to both arms and hands.
He said: 'If he had come out victorious, I would have shown respect and said he was the better man.'

Millions of viewers across the United States tuned in for what was expected to be one of the biggest sporting events in history, but some were left frustrated as pay-per-view services crashed just hours before they stepped into the ring because of surging demand.

The 38-year-old favorite conquered the Filipino in front of thousands of boxing fans and celebrities who had flown into Sin City from around the world just to be ringside for the historic bout.

Justin Bieber, who hosted a lavish pre-party in the Hard Rock Hotel earlier on Saturday, was at the forefront of the action, leading Mayweather and his entourage into the packed arena after embracing the boxer during his pre-fight ritual.

Mayweather made a surprisingly strong start, then withstood some aggressive counter-punching by the Filipino southpaw in the later rounds as he improved his career record to 48-0.

Though Pacquiao repeatedly forced Mayweather to backpedal, the wily American blunted his opponent's best efforts by using his renowned defensive skills while getting in several telling jabs and punches of his own.
After the bout, which has been five years in the making, 'Money' confirmed that he will have one more fight in September, citing a deal with Showtime.
The judges' scorecards read: 118-110, 116-112 and 116-112 in favor of Mayweather in a decision that didn't go down well with his defeated Philippine opponent.

'Pac-Man' insisted he thought he had won the encounter, saying: 'I thought I won the fight. He didn't do nothing.' He is now planning a vacation before mulling over the next stage of his career.

In the Philippines, a country stood still as they watched their national hero in action more than 7,000 miles away.

The streets of Manila were packed as fans caught a glimpse of the fight any way they could, having been asked by their government to switch off their refrigerators before and during the fight to prevent an electrical black out across the country.

Gymnasiums and other public venues where the 12-round fight was shown for free on Sunday lunchtime local time were quickly vacated after it was announced Pacquiao lost by unanimous decision.

A nation expects: Filipinos cheered as they watched their hero Manny Pacquiao via a live satellite broadcast from Las Vegas. Hundreds of fans in some parts of Manila were unable to watch the 12-round fight because of a sudden downpour and signal interruption

Model Cassie Ventura (left) and P Diddy pose ringside as they enter the arena. Diddy was heavily involved in the build-up to the fight, publicly backing Floyd Mayweather

Some fans said Pacquiao should retire from boxing while others demanded a rematch.

Roland Purificacion, a 45-year-old pedicab driver who watched the fight on a huge television screen outside the Quiapo Church in central Manila, was disappointed but spoke for many of his compatriots when he said Pacquiao 'is still the people's champ. He is still our hero'.
In Pacquiao's hometown of Kiamba, a fishing and farming town in southern Sarangani province, which he represents in Congress, passenger mini-buses brought villagers who have no television to watch the fight in the town's 2,500-seat gymnasium.

Ahead of the $400million pay-per-view extravaganza, Mayweather wrapped his arm around Bieber and posed for pictures behind the scenes at the MGM Grand before walking out in front of more than 16,000 spectators.
He bizarrely strutted out with the 21-year-old popstar and a man dressed as The Burger King - a choice that has not been given any clear reasoning.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao entered the ring with American chat show host Jimmy Kimmel, who was allegedly dressed up as Bieber. As he walked in, the underdog marched to the tune of a song he penned himself, and even took a selfie with trainer Freddie Roach.

Actor and singer Jamie Foxx gave a heartfelt rendition of the American national anthem, while Gail Banawis, a 19-year-old Bronx native and Filipina-American was a member of a large group who sung the Philippine version.

Just hours before the event, viewers across the United States complained their paid for viewing - at $99 a piece - was crashing.
Record sales of more than four million had been predicted before the flight on Saturday, carrying the gross value revenue from the richest fight of all time above half a billion dollars.

DirecTV, which serves the entire US, were suffering black-outs. The outlet for up to a third of the pay-per-view transmission in America, posted a notice on a still screen saying that Mayweather vs Pacquiao may not be available for 14 days.

In the built-up to the fight, rapper 50 Cent caught up with Juan Manuel Marquez, the last man to beat Pacquiao, and says the boxer 'started singing one of his songs'.

Meanwhile, Bieber was hosting a pool party at Rehab at the Hard Rock Hotel, flexing his muscles for the cameras and posing alongside Australian model and reported love interest Shanina Shaik.
As well as actors and swimwear models, a host of sports starts also jetted in for the historic match-up. English golfer Justin Rose made it to the fight with wife Kate Phillips.

Rory McIlroy however didn't make it in time despite acquiring tickets - the world No 1 is was playing Paul Casey in the quarter-finals of the WGC-Cadillac match play in San Fransisco.

The likes of Robert De Niro, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Michael J. Fox, Leonardo DiCaprio, Denzel Washington, and Rihanna were also seen ringside on Saturday night.
Will Smith and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson were in attendance, alongside rapper P Diddy and 'Rocky' star Sylvester Stalone.

The Las Vegas Sun reported on Saturday that airport traffic reached record volume levels, forcing hundreds of private jets to smaller area airports.
Pictures taken from incoming flights showed the runways lined with hoards of private jets. Tom Brady was seen at the Kentucky Derby earlier in the day before jetting in to Sin City for the encounter.

With tickets commanding six-figure sums on the resale market, even A-list celebrities were being forced to call in favours, and many were left waiting to hear if they had made the red carpet cut hours before the event.

Fewer than 1,000 tickets were offered to the public before the fight and those vanished in seconds. The remainder were divided among the two fighters' promotion companies and MGM, who made the seats available to their best customers.

A Showtime official told Reuters the cable giant, which will share pay-per-view rights with rival HBO, had been fielding calls from anxious A-listers over the last 24 hours eager to confirm ringside reservations.
But with demand far out-stripping supply, some celebrities faced the humbling prospect of being shut out or bumped into the upper levels.

Seat or no seat, celebrity parties raged up and down the Las Vegas Strip on Friday night with something for nearly every taste and wallet.
For high-rollers, hip hot artist Jay Z offered a mega-expensive $50,000 a table VIP bash around the megafight while P. Diddy threw a poolside bash with a $10,000 a table cover complete with Sports Illustrated swimsuit models.

Actors Bridgid Coulter (top) and Don Cheadle and Michael J. Fox were in also attendance

Boxing re: Manny Still Wants Rematch >Money May Change Floyds Mind

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Money Changes Mind on Rematch, Calls Pac-Man 'Coward'

Bleachers 8 May 2015

The buildup to the first fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao featured a will-they-or-won't-they tug of war typically seen on daytime soap operas. It appeared we might avoid a similar situation the second time around after both boxers said publicly they were open to a rematch.

Not so fast.

In an exclusive interview with Showtime's Jim Gray, Mayweather called Pacquiao a "coward" and indicated there would be no rematch as previously speculated.

"Did I text Stephen A. Smith and say I will fight him again? Yeah, but I change my mind," Mayweather told Gray, per Sports Illustrated. "At this particular time, no, because he's a sore loser and he's a coward. ... If you lost, accept the loss and say, 'Mayweather, you were the better fighter.'"

BoxingScene.com provided more of the interview with Gray:

Since his unanimous-decision loss on May 2, Pacquiao and his camp have gone on the offensive, citing a shoulder injury as the main reason the Filipino boxer lost. Pacquiao said he suffered a rotator cuff tear during the lead-up to the bout and was denied an anti-inflammatory shot by the Nevada State Athletic Commission due to a paperwork snafu, per Ryan Songalia of Rappler.

"We filled it out, but also I'm so disappointed because for the first time in my boxing career, more than 20 years, they hold my vitamins, they hold my water [from] the dressing room. This is new," Pacquiao said, per Rongalia.

Pacquiao indicated the shoulder began bothering him during the bout's fourth round, by far his best of the fight. Dan Rafael of ESPN.com reported Wednesday that Pacquiao underwent surgery to repair the torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. He is expected to miss between nine months and a year.

"Excuses, excuses, excuses," Mayweather said, per Sports Illustrated. "I'm not going to buy into the bulls--t...and I don’t want the public to buy into the bulls--t. He lost. He knows he lost. I lost a lot of respect for him after all of this."

Of course, a long recovery period for Pacquiao would likely take him out of contention for a Mayweather rematch anyway. Mayweather is currently scheduled to fight in September, the last of his six-match agreement with Showtime. The pound-for-pound king has long maintained he would retire at the end of that contract.

Boxing VIDEO-Pacquiao Ready to Fight 2016 >After Recovery of Injury

Manny Pacquiao Confirms He'll Fight Again, Questions Floyd Mayweather's Antics

AP 9 July 2015

Manny Pacquiao has confirmed he will return to the ring in 2016, giving himself ample time to recover from the torn rotator cuff injury he suffered during the defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 2.

The Filipino isn't impressed with Mayweather's actions since the fight and believes the release of a recent video—in which Pretty Boy goads Pacquiao's injury—doesn't show the composure of a respectable leader for the sport.

"I'm ready to fight, next year. I'm fine," Pacquiao told Viva.co.id (h/t Sky Sports). Although his return will likely prove too late to face Mayweather again—with Money's final bout likely to be scheduled for September—Pacquiao had some advice for the American brawler.

"A real champion is gracious in both his words and conduct, someone who is a champion, not just in his chosen field of endeavour but in his own home and in his private life," he said, per PhilBox.com (h/t Sky Sports).

Mayweather's mocking of Pacquiao can be seen below:

Boxing Pacquiao's Shoulder is Completely Healed

MANILA, Philippines – Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum reported that he was informed by Manny Pacquiao that the boxing icon's right shoulder is now "completely healed" after undergoing surgery in May to repair a torn rotator cuff.

Pacquiao suffered the injury while training for his "Fight of the Century" against Floyd Mayweather Jr., which he lost via unanimous decision.

"Pacquiao is apparently getting an MRI in the Philippines this week," Arum told Boxing Scene. "He's sending it (to the surgeon in the United States) for an evaluation."

"He claims the shoulder is completely healed, and he has absolute no pain or soreness or anything from the operation," he added.

Boxing re: PhOtOs-Pacquiao's Farewell Fight APR 2016>New Career in Politics

Manny Pacquiao 'Still Negotiating' Floyd Mayweather Rematch Ahead of Final Fight

By Bleachers, Oct 27, 2015

Manny Pacquiao has revealed he is attempting to organise a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. as his final fight before he retires from boxing.

Mayweather and Pacquiao played out the richest fight in boxing history in May, the Filipino losing by unanimous decision.

Money has since beaten Andre Berto and retired with an unbeaten 49-0 professional record.

However, Pacquiao maintains he could yet face up to his longtime rival again, per FightHype.com:

"I don't know yet who's my opponent next but we're still negotiating right now about the rematch with Floyd Mayweather so hoping for that."

The 36-year-old Filipino has not fought since his clash with Mayweather after undergoing surgery on the right-shoulder injury he blamed for his defeat in Las Vegas.

According to his promoter, Bob Arum, Pac-Man will return to action on April 9 in what is likely to be his last fight before his attention turns to the Philippines Senate

FightHype.com's report indicated that no contact has yet been made with Mayweather's representatives, but Pacquiao is clearly keen to have another go at the self proclaimed "Best Ever."

The first welterweight clash between the two generation-defining boxers was largely underwhelming.

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson gave a pithy summary of the clash at the time after a fight in which Pac-Man struggled to lay a telling blow on a dodging and ducking Mayweather:

"We waited 5 years for that..."

A rematch would undoubtedly draw huge attention once again, but many fans will have been put off after the disappointment of May 2's spectacle.

It seems highly unlikely that Mayweather would come out of retirement and risk his unbeaten record against a boxer he has already beaten convincingly.

Alex Menendez/Getty Images

A far more likely final opponent for Pacquiao is Britain's Amir Khan, the Bolton-born fighter having recently talked up his prospects of fighting the eight-division champ, per BBC:

"I am the front-runner. Manny Pacquiao makes a good story because we've been training partners and I've been with his coach Freddie Roach. There's a big chance of the fight happening, it's all about making sure my team is on point with the deal and they need to make sure they get the fight that I want."

A clash between Pacquiao and the 28-year-old Khan would likely be an exciting encounter, as both are combative and fast fighters.
While not as high-profile, it would surely be more interesting than another prospective clash for Pacquiao with Mayweather.

Update re: PhOtOs-Pacquiao's Farewell Fight APR 2016>New Career in Politics

Floyd Concerned About Pacquiao's Pay

AP 12 Jan 2016

Alex Ariza, the former strength and conditioning coach of Manny Pacquiao, has stated that the Filipino champion should have earned more in his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

According to Ariza via philboxing.com, Mayweather “was concerned about how much money Manny Pacquiao got. There were things that didn’t add up to Floyd, and Manny should have made much more than he got.”

Ariza’s recent statement can be a considered a jab against Pacquiao’s handler, Bob Arum, the president of Top Rank Promotions, which has promoted Pacquiao over the past decade. No figures have been officially confirmed by both fighters regarding the amount of their take home pay after taxes and promoters’ fees after the fight.

However, official records state that the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout generated over 4.4 million pay-per-view (PPV) buys, which shattered the old record of over just 2 million by a mile.

According to initial reports after the bout, Mayweather earned about US$220 million to US$230 million (AU$314.9 million to AU$329.21 million), while Pacquiao earned US$150 million (AU$214.7 million). However, Mayweather has his own promotion company, while Pacquiao is under Arum’s Top Rank, which has an unknown percentage of what Pacquiao has earned in the richest bout in the history of the sport.

In the same interview, Ariza also mentioned Arum’s lack of foresight with regards to Filipino boxers other than Pacquiao, saying that the long-time promoter has not given anything back to help the development of boxing in Pacquiao’s home country.

“I’ve been to a lot of gyms here and I see such tremendous talent it's so sad that after all the money made off Pacquiao they can’t give a little back,” Ariza added, referring to Arum and Top Rank.

Pacquiao is set to return to the ring, reportedly for the final time in his career, on 9 April 2016 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada to battle American Timothy Bradley for the third time in their careers.

Pacquiao Eyes Fond Farewell
>Looks Forward to New Career in Politics

By AP 19 January 2016

Manny Pacquiao said he is looking forward to swapping the boxing ring for the political arena on Tuesday as the countdown began towards his farewell fight with long-time American rival Timothey Bradley in April.

Pacquiao, whose last bout was the money-spinning 'Fight of the Century' with Floyd Mayweather last May, insisted he will hang up his gloves for good after the third and final instalment of his rivalry with Bradley.

The 37-year-old eight-division world champion is planning to run for a seat in the Philippines senate later this year after already serving as a representative in the Asian country's congress.

"I'm so happy to be hanging up my gloves after this fight," Pacquiao told a press conference at the luxury Beverly Hills Hotel.
"I'm sure I will feel sad but that's life. You can't keep on fighting all the time. But it's time I think.

"I started out in boxing because I wanted to help my family, my mother.
Now I'm ending my boxing career because I want to help my countrymen, the Filipino people. I'm ending because I want to serve the people."

Bradley's WBO welterweight title will be on the line in the April 9 bout at Las Vegas's MGM Grand in what is the third meeting of the two fighters.

Bradley, (33-1-1, 13 KOs), won a highly controversial split decision against Pacquiao in their first meeting in 2012.

Pacquiao then won their 2014 rematch in Las Vegas with a comfortable unanimous decision to end Bradley's undefeated record.

The Filipino slugger (57-6-2, 38 KOs) said he is anticipating a sterner challenge from Bradley in their decisive bout.

"I chose Bradley again because he's different from before," Pacquiao said.
"He's improved a lot."

Bradley meanwhile also warned fans to expect a different fight to the previous two bouts.

"I've heard that Manny Pacquiao chose me because he knows me," Bradley said.
"I think it's different now. I honestly do. "I think this will be a different fight than the first two altercations. That's all I can tell you. It's going to be a great fight -- he wants it really badly and so do I."
END

NB: Pac-Man is a hero in the Philippines and has already given a lot of his earnings to help the poor... in many causes....
One day he will be PRESIDENT...

Update re: Pacquiao Wants Mayweather Rematch-'Last Bout Ruined Boxing'+Huge Drop>Pay-Per-View

This is How Boxing Survives in a Post-Mayweather-Pacquiao world

Posted 17 May 2016

Let’s start with a question: Where are all those folks who said a Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao bout was needed to save boxing?

When we find them, we need an explanation on what has happened in the wake of that mega-fight.

Last week’s middleweight title bout in Las Vegas between Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan is the latest in a string of pay-per-view events to significantly underperform expectations since Mayweather and Pacquiao smashed all records and sold 4.6 million for their May 2, 2015, showdown.

Alvarez and Khan combined to sell about 460,000 on pay-per-view, including 145,000 on DirecTV, about 230,000 on cable and about 60,000 on Dish Network. The rest of the sales came via companies like Verizon Fios.

Since Mayweather-Pacquiao did 4.6 million for their bout that was six years in the making, the Mayweather-Andre Berto, Pacquiao-Tim Bradley and Alvarez-Khan all seriously underperformed expectations. Gennady Golovkin’s October 2015 pay-per-view bout for the WBA and IBF middleweight belts with David Lemieux in New York did just under 150,000, though expectations weren’t high for that one.

The only bout in that time frame that came close to matching expectations was the November fight in which Alvarez decisioned Miguel Cotto to win the WBC middleweight belt in Las Vegas. HBO Pay-Per-View reported that show did 900,000 buys. Several industry insiders have said that number is grossly exaggerated, but Yahoo Sports has no specifics to counter the HBO Sports number.

Mayweather-Berto and Pacquiao-Bradley III both came in around the 400,000 mark, low numbers for fighters of their stature.

Adding the sales of all of the pay-per-views since Mayweather-Pacquiao together and they come out to only a little more than the 2.2 million that Alvarez and Mayweather sold for their 2013 bout.

It’s difficult to pinpoint the reasons for the various bouts coming in lower than expected, though a reasonable guess would be the public’s extraordinary dissatisfaction with the way the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight went.

It was a money grab in which fans were even charged to go to the weigh-in. Now, all of the money from that went to charity and organizers said they did it as a form of crowd control, but it was the last straw on a show in which promoters did everything they could to extract every last cent out of their customers.

That might have been OK had the event lived up to the billing. The undercard was woefully lacking in stars and competitive fights, with both televised undercard bouts being one-sided blowouts in which the B-side never had a chance.

On top of that, Mayweather dominated the main event and was content to cruise to the easy victory instead of putting his foot on the accelerator, taking a little risk and going for a finish.

It was a brilliant display of boxing by Mayweather but it wasn’t entertaining for fans who had hoped to see the two best fighters of their era put on a dynamic match. It was a business deal between two veteran fighters who were each content to take their nine-figure paydays and laugh their way to the bank.

In that atmosphere, it was hard for anyone subsequently to sell. And Top Rank’s Bob Arum, who promoted Pacquiao-Bradley III last month, is going to feel the brunt of it in July when his pay-per-view bout between Terence Crawford and Viktor Postol is also a dud at the box office.

In Arum’s defense, the bout should be on HBO, and it’s normally one that HBO would buy. For some reason this year, HBO’s budget is significantly less than it has been and it declined to buy a highly competitive fight between two unbeaten (though largely unknown) champions.

But Arum chose Bradley as Pacquiao’s April opponent as opposed to either Khan or, better yet, Crawford or Adrien Broner. The public had seen Pacquiao-Bradley twice and neither were hugely compelling, so fans weren’t all that interested in buying it again.

Khan would have been a better opponent for Pacquiao than he turned out to be for Alvarez. He was far too small for Alvarez and had fought only four times above 140 pounds before challenging Alvarez for the WBC belt at a catchweight of 155 pounds.

Very few gave Khan, who had been knocked out in the first round in a lightweight bout, much chance of lasting 12 rounds with the heavy-handed Alvarez. Khan boxed well in the early portions of the bout, but Alvarez knocked him cold the first time Khan made a mistake.

But he would have had a good shot to defeat Pacquiao, considering he would have been the bigger man and he had the boxing skills, too.

Likewise, Berto had done nothing to earn a shot at Mayweather, and few gave him a chance to win. Considering that bout came only four months after the debacle with Pacquiao, fans weren’t going to give Mayweather the benefit of the doubt. The fight sold 90 percent fewer units than Mayweather-Pacquiao.

As it turned out, Mayweather-Berto delivered the same level of excitement as an “In the Kitchen with David” marathon on QVC.

The best fight to make in boxing now is one between Alvarez and Golovkin. Promoters Oscar De La Hoya and Tom Loeffler have had multiple conversations about getting it done.

But Alvarez speaks almost no English and Golovkin’s English is not particularly good. It will be a difficult sell, despite the quality of the fight. So much will go into determining how big a fight becomes, but it’s hard to see that bout doing 1 million on pay-per-view in the current climate.

What is easy to see, though, is that promoters have to start treating their fans with more respect. Jacking up the pay-per-view price and filling an undercard with dreck is the worst kind of customer service.

In selling pay-per-views, like anything else, customer service is king.

Put on the fights the people want to see, and make sure the fighters understand they need to give the customers their moneys worth, and the business will rebound.

Until, then, though, it’s just going to muddle along with low numbers.

Update re: Pacquiao Wants Mayweather Rematch-'Last Bout Ruined Boxing'+Huge Drop>Pay-Per-View

Manny Pacquiao Eyes Rematch With Floyd Mayweather...
>After Successful Return to the Ring in Las Vegas

  • Manny Pacquiao returned with a victory over Jessie Vargas in Las Vegas
  • Pacquiao claimed the WBO welterweight title with a unanimous decision
  • The 37-year-old is now seeking a rematch with Mayweather
  • Pacquiao lost to Mayweather on points in the richest fight of all-time
Daily Mail UK, 7 November 2016

Manny Pacquiao is seeking a rematch with Floyd Mayweather of the richest fight of all time so they can restore the public’s faith in boxing.

Their long delayed and much ballyhooed fight last year made well over half a billion dollars at the box office but was a monumental turn-off for the worldwide television audience.

So massive was the negative impact on the sport that it has been blamed for a huge drop in pay-per-view ratings and when a return bout was first mooted the public groaned at the prospect.

Both men retired subsequently but the Pacman came back brilliantly in Las Vegas on Saturday night to win his 11th world title with a vintage beating of welterweight champion Jessie Vargas.

The reason he would like Mayweather to join him in his return to the ring is not the money.

The morning-after sun was blazing down on the desert scene of his renaissant triumph, in the month before his 38th birthday, as Pacquiao said:

‘If we fight again I will do everything in my power to win back the trust of the fans.
‘They would not be disappointed again if it happens. I promise to make sure they love it. That is what we owe them.’

No-one was disappointed with the lightning speed and virile power of Pacquiao’s performance against the much larger, as well as a decade younger, Vargas.

Even Mayweather said: ‘Not bad.’

Mayweather’s acceptance of Pacquiao’s personal invitation to a ringside seat rustled the grapevine with speculation of a rematch next year.

Before jetting back to his duties as a senator in the Philippines, Pacquiao said:

‘We have not had any discussions about a second fight but I know I will be boxing again.
‘And if the fans want it, why not?’

He fought the original fight with an injured shoulder and Mayweather did just enough to win. Now he says:

‘I will make sure I am able to be my best if there is a next time.’

Should it happen the two of them could expect to bank roughly half the $210 million paid to Mayweather and Pacquiao’s purse of $120 million.
That might be an offer too good for Mr Money to refuse but it is not the Pacman’s motivation.

Floyd Mayweather made an appearance ringside for Pacquiao's comeback on Saturday

Pacquiao says:

‘My most important contract is the one I have with the fans. The money is not as important as accomplishment, honour and giving excitement to the fans.’

Sceptics should know that in addition to his huge charity funding in his homeland he made sure that thousands of the less affluent of his fellow countryman living in the US were able to gain admission to the Thomas and Mack Center to watch his comeback.

He insisted that the price for 7,000 seats was reduced to $50. That was by no means all, as he explains:

‘I also spent almost $2 million buying tickets for my fans who could not afford the $50.’

Pacquiao’s take home pay from this fight is expected to rise to about $8 million but his guarantee is just half that, of which 50 per cent has already gone on those tickets.

By virtue of his political day job the Pacman also has the title His Honour.

Consequently this purse mattered less than his achievement.

Mayweather and Pacquiao met in a mega-money fight back in 2015 at the MGM Grand

‘It is good to be a world champion again,‘ says the only boxer to win those titles in eight different weight divisions.
And he adds: ‘Even more important to me is making history and I am very proud to be the first sitting senator ever to be a world champion.’

How long can he go on now he is back?

‘I can’t say I will definitely be fighting at 40,’ he says. ‘But others have proved it is possible. It depends on your dedication and how you look after your body. We found a way to do that by working all day in the Senate and then training at night.
‘It requires discipline and time management and we have established the pattern which will enable me to fight on. In fact I feel better this morning than after many fights earlier in my career. The training has been tailored to take care of my body. It could not recover now from 33 rounds of physical work every day of camp.’

Pacquiao (right) battles it out with Vargas in their WBO welterweight championship fight

His only discomfort this day comes with the seven stitches in a wound opened on his skull by a clash of heads in the last round.

Pacquiao also conditioned his mind for this fight. He says:

‘I kept being told I was fighting a bigger younger opponent. So all the time in training I kept telling myself "You’re Not Old, You’re Not Old".’

He looked anything but ancient in this fight. Other than as the Pacman of old.
The solitary disappointment was that the first knock-out in seven years he wanted, which frequently looked imminent against Vargas, did not materialise.

If only he would pick on someone his own size in the spring, when the Senate will be in recess giving him time for his next fight.

But the likelihood, be he in the ring with Mayweather or a young buck such as Terence Crawford, is that he will be boxing again at 147 lbs.

Pacquiao smiles as he walks to his corner during the fight on Saturday night

More immediately, his flight home to Manila will land early this Tuesday morning and he will go straight to the reopening of the Senate.
‘That really is my next big fight,’ says this remarkable fighter, politician and philanthropist.

As we talked his suite on the Strip was filled to overflowing with family, friends and boxing associates all enjoying a lavish Sunday brunch.

When I joked to this deeply religious man that it seemed like the feeding of the 5,000 he laughed and said: ‘You know me.’

That, Your Honour, is a pleasure.

Update Mayweather Now Boxing Promoter Amid Rematch Rumours with Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather Promotes Badou Jack and James DeGale Super Middleweight Title Fight Amid Talk of a Manny Pacquiao Rematch

  • Floyd Mayweather jumped straight into his duties as a promoter this week
  • The boxing icon was present at the Badou Jack - James Degale press call
  • Jack and Degale are set to face off for the super middleweight title
  • But rumours have been swirling of a Mayweather vs Pacquiao rematch
  • Mayweather has also recently been called out by UFC's Conor McGregor
Daily Mail UK, 20 November 2016

Amid rumours of a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather was present this week as a pre-fight press call between Badou Jack and Britain's James DeGale got under way.

Jack and DeGale are set to face each other in the ring in a hotly anticipated super middleweight title showdown in Brooklyn.
The legendary Mayweather, undertaking his duties as a boxing promoter, was present to oversee proceedings as the two fighters spoke about their upcoming bout in January.

Floyd Mayweather was undertaking his promotional duties for the upcoming fight between Badou Jack (L) and James DeGale (R)

The boxing icon was present as Jack and DeGale took questions on their January clash

DeGale (23-1-KO14) and Jack (20-1-2-KO12) will meet at Brooklyn's Barclays Center - a fight which will see the sport return to New York after a five month absence.

But, his promotional duties aside, Mayweather may well have bigger things on his mind, as rumours of a potential multi-million rematch with Manny Pacquiao continue to swirl.

Mayweather and Pacquiao met in May 2015 in what was arguably the most anticipated boxing match-up of all time.
Mayweather emerged victorious on that occasion, taking the win on a points decision.

The American superstar was seen back in the boxing ring only once since, defeating Andre Berto in September 2015 before announcing his retirement from the sport.

Rumours have been circulating of a multi-million rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao

But boxing fans worldwide have been desperate to see a rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao to occur ever since, to settle the score once and for all.
The undefeated champion appears to be as in demand as ever, despite on several occasions stating he is happily enjoying the quieter life of retirement.

Just this week the superstar was called out by UFC star Conor McGregor, who has apparently set his terms for a potential fight after saying: 'Tell Floyd and Showtime, I'm coming - tell him to go to them Showtime offices. I want $100 million cash to fight you under boxing rules cause he's afraid of a real fight,' on stage at a New York nightclub.

The two boxing legends fought in May 2015 but fans are desperate to see a second clash

Conor McGregor has also called out Mayweather this week, hinting he would be ready to fight

But despite his UFC achievements Mayweather says McGregor is simply not on his level

But, when asked by reporters his thoughts on comparisons between himself and McGregor, Mayweather was instantly dismissive....
claiming the UFC star is not on his level.

'Conor McGregor can go out there and do what he do, but never compare Conor McGregor to me, it's a total disrespect,' Mayweather said in a TMZ interview.

'Once again, I'm an elephant. Elephants don't beef with ants, an elephant is so large it doesn't even see ants,' Mayweather added.
