WWE SummerSlam 2014: Last-Minute Predictions for Matches at PPV

Things are going to heat up this Sunday at SummerSlam, which features the most stacked card in months.

Will Roman Reigns defeat Randy Orton and take the next step to WWE stardom? Will the WWE title change hands? Will it belong to Seth Rollins or Brock Lesnar at the end of the night?

There's less than a week until WWE SummerSlam 2014, and the WWE Superstar Power Rankings are very much in flux. As we approach one of the most important pay-per-view events on the pro wrestling calendar, what will the go-home week hold for those in the top 10?

This past week, there were surprising losses, a champion returned to action and a cosmic journey began. We'll get into all that and then some in the following slides. Before we do, though, please read how these rankings work.

Holding a championship, being a No. 1 contender or holding a Money in the Bank briefcase counts for much of a wrestler's ranking, and they are therefore the most heavily weighted components in these rankings. If a wrestler is tied with another wrestler, holding a title will be a tiebreaker.

Wins and losses account for the bulk of the week-to-week movement—wins and losses are, after championships, the most important component of the rankings. The quality of a wrestler's opponents and whether they are ranked is considered in the week-to-week movement.

"Getting the better" of someone—like beating someone down—as well as "getting got" also counts, though not as much as wins and losses. Being "over" with the fans is considered but not heavily weighted in the ranking decisions. Pay-per-view performances take on added importance.

Only the top 10 wrestlers are ranked. Wrestlers on the Watch List were considered for top-10 status but were ultimately nixed. They are unranked, and their listing is in no particular order.

Generally speaking, these rankings do not break kayfabe, though any major non-storyline information (serious injury, WWE Wellness Policy violations, legitimate hirings, firings, contract information, "sabbaticals," etc.) may be taken into consideration, especially if WWE confirms them publicly. Nothing that could be explicitly considered a spoiler is included unless WWE acknowledges it as well.

Rusev
Rusev had a strong week, picking up a win over Sin Cara on Raw followed by a win over Big E on SmackDown. Now, he'll have to carry that momentum into SummerSlam. Can he keep up the pace?

Jack Swagger
Jack Swagger's week started off rough after attacking and being driven off by Rusev. But then on Main Event, he defeated Alberto Del Rio via submission. Now, he'll face Rusev at SummerSlam after losing via count-out to him at Battleground. Can he get the best of Rusev this Sunday?

The Miz
The Miz really hasn't established himself as a strong Intercontinental champion, having not had many matches and not being able to get the best of Dolph Ziggler. Can he build some momentum with a win or two this week, or will he still be the butt of Ziggler's jokes on Twitter?

Dolph Ziggler
Dolph Ziggler is now officially the No. 1 contender for the Intercontinental Championship. He'll face The Miz this Sunday at SummerSlam for the title. On Raw, he picked up a win over Cesaro but couldn't quite get over the hump and defeat Seth Rollins on SmackDown. Can he become the new IC champion this Sunday?

Heath Slater
Heath Slater gets consideration this week after defeating Seth Rollins on Raw (Rollins was ranked No. 2 at the time). He then followed that up with a team win over Stardust and Goldust on Main Event. Slater and The Gator (as he and Titus O'Neil are known these days) could begin making waves in WWE. O'Neil's loss to Sheamus notwithstanding, the team has had some success and could make a run at the tag titles if they can get on the same page.

10. Brock Lesnar

Previous Rank: 8
Movement: Down 2

The way these rankings are calculated, it's difficult to keep someone in the same spot if they don't appear. Champions have an advantage, but Lesnar is, as of now, not a champion. That could all change this Sunday, though.
Lesnar will get the chance to avenge his loss to Cena two years ago at SummerSlam. Last time, the match was an Extreme Rules match. This time, no weapons will be allowed. And that could prove enough for Lesnar, since he'll have the size, weight, reach and strength advantages over Cena in what's sure to be a brutal heavyweight bout.
Can he become WWE World Heavyweight champion? His advocate, Paul Heyman, sure thinks so.

9. Randy Orton

Previous Rank: 6
Movement: Down 3

Randy Orton will get his chance to take out Roman Reigns this Sunday. Reigns, who cost him a chance at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, will no doubt give Orton a tough fight.

In Orton's only match (vs. Dean Ambrose on SmackDown), he was disqualified, as he and Seth Rollins put the boots to Ambrose. Orton will need to pick up some momentum heading into SummerSlam, because Reigns already looks prepared for war.

8. Chris Jericho

Movement: Into Top 10

Chris Jericho accomplished what he needed to accomplish this past Monday, though he paid a price for it. Over the past week-and-a-half, he's defeated both Luke Harper and Eric Rowan in singles matches, meaning the two of them will be barred from ringside in his match against Bray Wyatt at SummerSlam.
This past Monday, it was Luke Harper who lost to Jericho. It was a DQ loss, though, due to interference from Bray Wyatt. The Wyatts beat Jericho down, and there's no doubting that Jericho didn't enjoy the beating. But the fact that he'll get Bray Wyatt alone has to make him feel pretty good.

7.Dean Ambrose

Movement: Into Top 10

Dean Ambrose had a great week. On Raw, he defeated Alberto Del Rio in a Beat the Clock Challenge at 15:42. Not a great time, but it'll do if your opponent loses their match. That's exactly what happened. Ambrose did everything he could to distract Seth Rollins, and it worked.
Rollins lost to Heath Slater, allowing Ambrose to pick the stipulation for his match with Rollins at SummerSlam. Perhaps a bit disappointingly, he picked a Lumberjack match. And on SmackDown, he picked up a DQ win over Randy Orton after he was beaten down by Orton and Rollins.
We'll finally get to see Rollins vs. Ambrose this Sunday. Can Ambrose come out on top?

6. AJ Lee

WWE Divas champion Lee continued her winning ways by picking up another win this week. She got a submission victory over Summer Rae on Main Event, her first bit of action since being attacked by Paige the week prior.
Paige is clearly trying to get under AJ Lee's skin, but AJ has matched the mind games step for step. Can she defend her title at SummerSlam, or will Paige win her second Divas Championship?

The Usos were idle this week and drop a spot. With no appearances, there's really not much else to report. They don't even have a match announced for SummerSlam.

Like The Usos, Sheamus has no match announced for SummerSlam as of yet. And lately, Sheamus has not even been appearing. But he returned to action this week on Superstars and got back to his winning ways.
He defeated Titus O'Neil after hitting him with a Brogue Kick. Now, we'll have to find out if he will defend the United States Championship at SummerSlam and who his opponent will be if he does.

3. Seth Rollins

It was not a good week for Seth Rollins. In a Beat the Clock Challenge match, he needed to beat 15:42 to earn the right to pick the stipulation in his match with Dean Ambrose. However, not only was he unable to beat the time, but he lost to Heath Slater. He made up for that loss on SmackDown when he defeated Dolph Ziggler, but the loss to Slater still hurt.
It was a bad loss, even with the distractions from Dean Ambrose. Now, he'll face Ambrose in a Lumberjack match. And don't forget, he's still Mr. Money in the Bank. He could walk out of SummerSlam as WWE World Heavyweight champion

2. Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns barely missed out on earning the No. 1 spot this week. He defeated Kane in a Last Man Standing match on Raw, which was brutal. He took serious punishment but survived and got Kane down for the 10-count.
Now he'll have the chance to battle Randy Orton at SummerSlam. If he wins, it could cement his place as a perennial contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. If he loses, though, it could set him back months. This may be the biggest match in Roman Reigns' career.

Cena clings to No. 1 this week by a thread after not appearing at all. While he's expected tonight on Raw, as is Lesnar, there was no Cena on WWE TV this past week. Well, except for the taped promo that you see above.

Cena is in for a brutal fight with Lesnar and is looking like he might actually be the underdog in the match. He's defeated Lesnar before, but weapons were available. This Sunday, it's Just Cena, Lesnar and the ring. And Paul Heyman, too.
It's a fair questions to ask: Can Cena overcome the odds this Sunday against Brock Lesnar?

While he's expected tonight on Raw, as is Lesnar, there was no Cena on WWE TV this past week. Well, except for the taped promo that you see above.
