WIMBLEDON 2014:

...

Andy Murray Defeats Kevin Anderson in Straight Sets =
6-4, 6-3, 7-6

-with Novak Djokovic vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Still to Come

  • Brilliant Bouchard Marches on..Eugenie Bouchard beats Alize Cornet 7-6, 7-5
  • Andy Murray beats Kevin Anderson in straight sets
  • Novak Djokovic is in action against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Centre Court
  • Stanislas Wawrinka through to the fourth round after straight sets win against Denis Istomin
  • Sabine Lisicki through to the quarter-finals after win over Ana Ivanovic

Quote:
Murray: 'When you play in front of a crowd like that, it gives you a big lift'

Murray tells BBC: 'It was a good win because Kevin was playing very well at the end.
'All of the matches are tough but I've got to do what I've got to do and concentrate on my side of the court.

'I'm trying to stay concentrated while I'm out on the court. When you play in front of a crowd like that it gives you a big lift.
'It's good to get off in straight sets, rest up and get ready for the quarters.'

He's done it! 6-4, 6-3, 7-6

Murray wins! He looks absolutely delighted with that and pumps the air continually. It was a match of two halves, separated by the rain delay.
Murray started well and was a set up in no time before Anderson upped his game after the break.
It's a big step for Murray, who will be pleased to have kept this match to three sets.

Stuart Fraser: Despite the stiff challenge from Kevin Anderson in the third set, yet another impressive performance from Andy Murray as he reaches the quarter-finals. 12 sets played, 12 sets won.
The Scot has only conceded 32 games so far at these Championships, which beats the 38 he conceded on his way to the last eight in 2010.
Ideal too for Murray that he has wrapped it up in quick-time when his potential opponents, Grigor Dimitrov and Leonardo Mayer, are resuming their match on No 1 Court following the rain delay. Dimitrov leads by a set and 6-5.

Novak Djokovic Through to Wimbledon 2014 Final
-after Defeating Grigor Dimitrov in Four Sets on Centre Court

  • Novak Djokovic wins in four sets to qualify for Wimbledon final
  • Dimitrov forced the No 1 seed into two tie-breaks, but failed to win
  • Djokovic will play seven-time champion Roger Federer in the final

Daily Mail UK, 5 July 2014

It was Grigor Dimitrov’s girlfriend, Maria Sharapova, who once joked that her movement on clay resembled ‘a cow on ice’.
It would be unfair to pin that label on the supremely athletic Bulgarian, but in the course of Friday’s exhilarating Wimbledon semi-final he may have set an unofficial record for slipping over on the coarsened Centre Court grass.

That may prove the most enduring memory of an afternoon of spills and thrills that resulted in Novak Djokovic winning 6-4 3-6 7-6 7-6 to set up a meeting with either Roger Federer or Canadian Milos Raonic.

Relief: Novak Djokovic celebrates after defeating Grigor Dimitrov at Wimbledon on Thursday

Spent: Dimitrov sinks to his knees after losing against Djokovic on Centre Court

Respect: The duo embrace after fighting it out over four thrilling sets in SW19

Just as Sharapova eventually found her footing on the clay to the extent that she has won two French Open titles, you suspect that Dimitrov will similarly master the turf and be back one day as a Wimbledon champion.

He has proved this week in performances against Andy Murray, and now the 27-year-old Serb, that this is well within his compass, provided he can discover the consistent mental application that will be required.

As much as his young millionaire’s backside constantly bumping onto the hallowed lawn was a reason for defeat it was his occasional lapses at inopportune times that proved his undoing against such a magnificent competitor.

With Sharapova looking down from his competitor’s box it could so easily have gone into a decider, had Dimitrov mustered a little more composure on the quartet of set points he created in the fourth.

Ouch: The Bulgarian grimaces as he does the splits after slipping on the dry grass

Another man down: Djokovic spends some time on his back after another gruelling point ends

As it is Djokovic will contest the thirteenth Grand Slam final of his career and try to arrest a run, beginning here a year ago, which has seen him lose the last three. As if he needs any more incentive, one more win would take him back to the world number one spot.

He was quick to give credit to his opponent, saying: 'I played against a future star, he is already a top player with quality shots and a great touch.,' he said. 'Like in my last match (against Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals) I allowed my opponent back in.

‘It’s a big challenge now for me as I have lost my last few Grand Slam finals when I could have won them all.'

He will be battle hardened this time after a tough campaign here and just about avoided his fate of last year, when Juan Martin Del Potro dragged him into a marathon five setter and softened him up for Andy Murray.

Nobody will relish the challenge more this time than the man from Kosovan mountains, so driven by national pride. The established stars have been somewhat under siege at this year’s Wimbledon, but nobody was going to mount more of a stand against them than Djokovic.

In previous years he has not enjoyed the dusty expanses that develop around the back of the court late in the championships but, ever the great problem solver, his movement has looked more comfortable this time.

The Bulgarian is fine athlete and his falls highlighted that Wimbledon needs to try and come up with a solution to the condition of the baseline as it appears to have deteriorated more in the last two years and someone might get injured. Perhaps the option of clay court footwear is called for in the latter rounds.

Sportsmail's Wimbledon day 11 verdict with Fraser and Dickson

Gripped: Maria Sharapova, Dimitrov's girlfriend watches on anxiously from the players' box

Dimitrov is of a similar elastic body type to Djokovic and made some incredible ‘gets’ while slipping all over the place. Yet it was serving from a static position that often proved a problem with eight double faults.

There was one at 2-4 in the first tiebreak and 6-6 in the second, and three consecutive ones in the third game of the fourth set. Against Murray there was also the occasional poor game but Djokovic was able to exact a higher price.

In warm but breezy conditions the first set raced by in 27 minutes and brief encounter beckoned when the Serb broke for 3-2 in the end. But Dimitrov then produced four inspired games, featuring his glorious volleying skills, to level the match.

Winner: Djokovic hits a forehand as he progressed through to the Wimbledon final

Stretch: Dimitrov reaches for a high ball during his tussle with the No 1 seed from Serbia

Look of despair: The world No 2 sees a ball disappear past his flailing racquet after a shot from Dimitrov

At his best: Djokovic shows off his magnificent defensive skills as he moves into his third SW19 final

Spectator's view: Djokovic and Dimitrov slug it out on Centre Court

His sliced backhand was causing particular problems but Djokovic responded by coming forward more, doubtless urged by coach Boris Becker.

He saved a break point at 3-4 and in the ensuing tiebreak benefitted from the double fault and an ill-chosen drop shot, symptomatic of the Bulgarian’s sometimes skittish shot selection.

When the three double faults led to him going 2-2 down in the fourth it looked over, only for Dimitrov to respond with a fighting instinct that must have had his girlfriend purring with pride.

Tough: Djokovic made hard work of match against Andy Murray's quarter-final conqueror

Djokovic was so pumped to save a first set point at 4-5 that he led out a blood curdling yell, and then in the tiebreak had cause to be grateful for his opponent’s charity when he let slip a lead of 6-3.

There was the lack of a killer punch when he needed it and Djokovic was not afraid to move further up the court away from the troublesome areas around the back.

He clinched it 9-7 and afterwards expressed the hope that the crowd had enjoyed it, which they surely did.

Next: The No 1 seed will play Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final on Sunday

As well as being the top story on the sports agenda in Canada, sports teams and stars as well as influential figures have paid tribute to the 20-year-old's historic run on the grass courts of SW19.

NHL ice hockey teams such as the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames have tweeted their tributes to the No 13 seed, as has Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

6-3 6-0
Kvitova Claims Second SW19 Title in Straight Sets as Bouchard's First Grand Slam Final Lasts just 55 Minutes on Centre Court

  • Kvitova beats Bouchard in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0
  • Match took just 55 minutes on Centre Court on Saturday
  • Bouchard was broken six times in a row, denying her a first Grand Slam title
  • Kvitova last won Wimbledon in 2011, three years before
  • Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic on Sunday

Daily Mail UK, 5 July 2014

Petra Kvitova has secured her second Wimbledon title after beating Canadian youngster Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 on Centre Court. The Czech, who previously won at SW19 in 2011, saw off the 13th seed in under an hour on Saturday.

Petra Kvitova produced a stunning display of hard-hitting tennis to defeat Eugenie Bouchard and win her second Wimbledon title.
The Czech fired 28 winners in a crushing 6-3 6-0 victory that took just 55 minutes.
It was a chastening experience for Bouchard in her first grand slam final, the 20-year-old Canadian simply unable to do anything to counter the brilliance of her opponent.

Victorious: Petra Kvitova is the 2014 women's Wimbledon champion after beating Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0

Brave: Bouchard manages a smile as she poses with her runner-up trophy

Princess Eugenie, whom Bouchard was named after, watched from the Royal Box but the queen of Centre Court in 2014 was undoubtedly Kvitova.

It looked like the roof would stay closed because of the threat of showers but, shortly before the match, the decision was made to open it and the two players took to Centre Court under cloudy skies.
Sixth seed Kvitova was back in a grand slam final for the first time since winning Wimbledon three years ago, finally ready to live up to the expectation that was placed on her shoulders.

The 24-year-old left-hander had flown a little under the radar during the fortnight, although her third-round clash with Venus Williams was one of the best matches of the tournament.

Most of the attention had understandably been on Bouchard. The Canadian's swift rise has really caught the imagination - from junior champion two years ago to Wimbledon finalist and top-10 player.
But it was clear from the start she had her work cut out as Kvitova's powerful forehand began to do its work.

The Czech was all over the Bouchard serve in the third game to take the first break and then withstood pressure to hold her serve.

Focused: Kvitova was desperate to land her second Wimbledon title

The game-clinching point was among the best of the tournament so far, Kvitova showing remarkable defensive powers before scrambling a backhand winner onto the line. The crowd were clearly behind Bouchard but they cheered long and loud for that one.

The frustration with Kvitova over the past three years has been that she was clearly capable of so much more than she achieved, but on Centre Court she had again found her zone.

Bouchard fended off three break points to hold for 3-2 but the pressure was relentless and another forehand winner gave Kvitova the double break two games later.
Bouchard kept her hopes alive in the set by immediately retrieving one break but Kvitova pounced on the 13th seed's serve again, taking her third set point with another terrific return.

Pressure: 20-year-old Bouchard was playing in her first ever Grand Slam final

Kvitova had gone into the 2011 final as a big underdog against Maria Sharapova but played a nerveless match, and she was doing the same as the favourite.

Bouchard stuck to her style of standing right on the baseline, but instead of applying pressure, it was giving her no time to counter Kvitova's huge hitting.
The match was threatening to get away from Bouchard quickly as Kvitova raced into a 2-0 lead in the second set, this time her backhand finding the baseline.

Bouchard looked set to stop the rot in the fourth game but Kvitova was relentless, a stunning forehand pass making it deuce and two more huge forehands giving her a 4-0 lead.
Two games later she brought up a first match point and clinched it, appropriately, with a backhand winner.

Support: Princess Eugenie was cheering on her namesake on Saturday

NOVAK DJOKOVIC IS THE MEN's WIMBLEDON CHAMPION 2014
:
6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4

Djokovic 6-4 Federer

Djokovic 5-4* Federer
Federer misses a huge chance to go 30-15 up, but miscues his smash down into the net. Cue a sigh of relief from Djokovic.
The seven-time champ, not for the first time today, serving to stay in the championship again.

Djokovic *4-4 Federer
These two are producing some outstanding tennis. Federer is down 15-40 but somehow recovers, Djokovic couldn't have played a better game without breaking. No tie-break this set remember... how much longer can these two keep this level up?

Djokovic 4-3* Federer
Great fighting spirit from Novak this time. He's concedes a break point but fight back brilliantly, roaring to the crowd in the first place. We're watching something special here.

Djokovic *3-3 Federer
167 total points each - you can't beat a competitive Wimbledon final! This is rivalling 2008's thriller. Federer lost out that occasion, but what today?

Djokovic 3-2* Federer
Federer seems to have all the shots at the moment, defending well as Djokovic looks to crank up the pressure. These two still have something left in the tank.

Djokovic *2-2 Federer
After that short break Federer gets right back down to business, serving to love. Entirely different body languages of the two players at the moment.

That medical time-out gives me a bit of time to reflect. In my view, this would be Federer's greatest title win by far should he clinch this match. Given the opponent, the length of match, and perhaps most importantly his age and form none of the seven others could compare.

Djokovic 2-1* Federer
Djokovic moving somewhat gingerly, and he calls for the trainer after that game. His serve brings him through, but it's a concern for the Serb.

Djokovic *1-1 Federer
Anything you can do, I can do better. It's been like that all day, and now Federer holds out to love, hitting his 28th ace of the match in the process.

FIFTH SET: Djokovic 1-0* Federer
Novak took a comfort break between those sets, maybe a good thing so he can recover mentally. Solid start to the fifth.

FEDERER WINS THE FOURTH SET 7-5

And he's done it! We're heading for a decider folks... who saw that coming?
I must say, I've never seen Federer serve as well as this. Another ace helps him along to a comfortable hold. Superb comeback from the seven-time champion.

Djokovic 5-6* Federer
Federer is on a roll! The crowd chant: "Roger, Roger" and he is channeling that support into a fine third set comeback. Four games in a row.
Now can he hold out... it's tough to predict.

Djokovic *5-5 Federer
The crowd want this fifth set... and so does Federer! An ace is crucial on championship point for Djokovic, and Federer sends down another for good measure at deuce.

Djokovic 5-4* Federer
Never rule out the seven-time champion! Federer forces his second break of the game and the match and produces some of his best tennis of the day.
Djokovic sent sprawling on that final point as Federer sweeps home a winner.

Djokovic *5-3 Federer
Federer holds his nerve. Now it's Novak's turn...

Djokovic 5-2* Federer
This has been a superb final, whatever the result - and the crowd are acknowledging that. Two of the longest rallies of the match in that last game, with the Serb holding on. He's on the brink...

Djokovic *4-2 Federer
Just when you think Federer is back in the match, sloppy errors cost him. We only had one break throughout the match, but now we've had three in a row.

Djokovic 3-2* Federer
Unbelievable from Federer! This final has got life in it yet! The crowd go wild as Federer huts a superb forehand into the far corner.
The mark of a champion.

Djokovic *3-1 Federer
This could well be the decisive moment in the set. Federer fights back from 0-40 but a loose forehand when an advantage down hands Djokovic the game. The 32-year-old looking slightly tired now.

Djokovic 2-1* Federer
But Novak isn't letting up. Incidentally, just two errors from Djokovic in the WHOLE of the third set.

FOURTH SET: Djokovic *1-1 Federer

Good start from Federer again. Djokovic takes another slight slip as he races for the ball, he gets up and looks OK though. He does like to throw his body around...

DJOKOVIC TAKES THE THIRD SET 7-6 (7-4)

Brilliant once again from Djokovic - this is the best tennis he's played all tournament. On top from start to finish in that tie-break, not giving Federer any chance to free his arms. Uphill challenge from Federer as he looks to make history today.

TIE-BREAK: Djokovic *4-2 Federer

At the change of ends, Djokovic takes the advantage. An ill-advised charge to the net from Federer goes against him. Can the Serb serve this one out?

Djokovic 6-6 Federer*
That's how Djokovic deals with the pressure! Comfortably holding, he's looking pumped up out there. So is Federer, so it should be another tight tie-break.

Djokovic *5-6 Federer
How good is this from Federer! Djokovic wastes two break points and the seven-time winner then sends down two aces at deuce (20 for the match now) to put the pressure back on Novak.

Djokovic 5-5* Federer
Superb from Djokovic. Some of his winners today have been sublime, and he hits three more in that game. Still just one break in this match so far.

Djokovic *4-5 Federer
40-0 again, this is easy! Djokovic now serving to stay in the set after Federer lands his 16th and 17th aces of the match.

Djokovic 4-4* Federer
But Novak retaliates with a 40-0! Still on serve here, and the statistics show how tight it is. Djokovic has 98 total points compared to Federer's 96.

Djokovic *3-4 Federer
40-15 again for Federer. His serve has barely been troubled in this third set.

Djokovic 3-3* Federer
Federer shaking his head throughout that game as a questionable over-rule from the umpire denies him a 30-0 lead. Novak again brings his a-game serves.

Djokovic *2-3 Federer
These games are rattling off in record time!
12 aces for Federer today now, seven for Djokovic.

DJOKOVIC WINS THE SECOND SET 6-4

Djokovic level! Federer forces his first break point of the match but the 2012 champion isn't having any of it. We're tied at one set apiece now, so this third set will be crucial.
Total points won: Djokovic 78 Federer 73

FEDERER WINS THE FIRST SET: 7-6 (9-7)

Remarkable from Federer. He may be nearly 33, but he looks to be in his prime out there. Saving a match point before firing down an ace, he then takes advantage of a loose second serve from Djokovic to force the error.
So little between them in that set.

Top shots (of all kinds) at Wimbledon today:

That's some row! David and Victoria Beckham, next to Samuel L Jackson

Plenty of famous faces at Wimbledon today

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and a galaxy of well-known faces from across sport and entertainment, including David Beckham and Samuel L Jackson, were heading to Wimbledon on Sunday for the men's final.
William and Kate headed the Royal Box list, which also featured the Duke of Kent, president of the All England Club.
Sporting stars included former England football captain Beckham, who was due to be accompanied by wife Victoria, cycling Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy and former Wimbledon champions Ashley Cooper, Roy Emerson, Neale Fraser, Jan Kodes, Rod Laver, Manuel Santana and Stan Smith.
From showbusiness, Hollywood actors Jackson, Bradley Cooper and Chris Hemsworth were also invited to take seats in the exclusive 74-seat box.

BATTLE OF THE COACHES:

MIKE DICKSON: Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg faced off 35 times in their career, with three of those being on this very same occasion. Now the rivalry rekindles itself by proxy, with their respective coaching charges Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer going for the ultimate prize.

It is a sweet coincidence that this will also be the 35th meeting between this afternoon’s finalists, although their career record against each other (18-16 to the Swiss) is much closer than the 25-10 superiority of the German over the Swede.
