Just Another "Quiet" Day in Formula One... Wacky Races mar Vettel's Home Triumph

A car ablaze before rolling itself down and across the track, a pit-lane cameraman bowled over by a wheel and a wacky race that was still alive on the final lap. Just another quiet day in Formula One, then.

There was nothing quite so dramatic as the five exploding tyres that put the British Grand Prix in danger of being halted seven days before, but safety in the sport was again being debated as the motorhomes were being packed away here on Sunday
For the crowd there was delight at Sebastian Vettel’s feat in becoming only the third German (after Michael and Ralph Schumacher) to win his home race. Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles was belted out.

But for those running the sport there was relief that there will not be a minute’s silence required when the next round of the World Championship is held in Hungary on July 28.

That would be far too close to the last one, to honour Mark Robinson, the 38-year-old marshal killed in Montreal four weeks ago by a crane.

The first drama of yesterday unfolded after Red Bull’s Mark Webber went into the pits for a change of rubber. There was a problem reshodding his right rear wheel, which flew off as he pulled away and bounced through four teams.

It then hit cameraman Paul Allen, who had his back to the heavy projectile and was knocked flat to the ground, banging his head on the Tarmac.

Medical assistance and help from the nearby Mercedes garage attended to him instantly. He remained conscious and was treated at the medical centre before being taken by helicopter to hospital, where he was treated for a broken collarbone, two fractured ribs and bruising.

‘The Briton has been kept there, under observation,’ said the FIA, who fined Red Bull £30,000 for the unsafe release of their car.

Pirelli have hastily redesigned their tyres following the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) threat that they would withdraw from this weekend’s event should there be any recurrence of the failures that blighted Silverstone.
Webber was able to be wheeled back to the pits and entered back into the race after the lap 9 incident.

To make matters worse in terms of safety Jules Bianchi's Marrussia car went up in flames after an engine blow out.
The French rookie had to get out of his car as quickly as possible, and that wasn't the end of the problems with the car.
The car started rolling back down the hill without anyone in it, across the race track, luckily not coming into contact with any of the racers.
A safety car had to come onto the track after the incident.

Sebastian Vettel went onto win the race, followed by Lotus pair Kimi Raikkonen and Roman Grosjean, as Lewis Hamilton slipped from pole to fifth place.

The race will be undoubtedly overshadowed by the dramatic events 'off-the-track', especially after what happened last weekend at Silverstone.
Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa, Jean Eric-Vergne and Sergio Perez all had their left tyres explode during the race on Sunday, as Pirelli admitted they had underrated the affect the new-to-this-season tyres could have.

Those who hadn't had tyres 'blow up' were still complaining of wear, with drivers threatning to boycott the German Grand Prix if the new tyres weren't up to scratch.

More danger followed midway through the race when the engine on Jules Bianchi’s Marussia burst into flames. He quickly escaped from the ****pit. The next time the cameras panned to his abandoned machine it was rolling down the banking, into the path of oncoming cars.

Thankfully, luckily, the driverless car had finished its journey by the time anyone else came into view. Bianchi was not to blame: he had put the car in neutral as per the instructions. The marshals ought to have ensured there was no rolling back.

Both instances need addressing, not least by managing numbers in the pit-lane and, perhaps, by seeing that everyone in there wears protective equipment.

Away from the safety concerns, the race was eventful, even if the imponderables of tyre strategy made it hard to read as a well-formed narrative.

Vettel had to fend off Kimi Raikkonen in the closing stages after Lotus put him on soft tyres in a maximum attack blast in the last 11 laps. He finished a second behind Vettel who said, with a sigh of relief: ‘I’m just glad that it was a 60-lap race, not 61 or 62.’

The bad news for the championship is that Vettel’s lead has now been extended to 34 over nearest challenger Fernando Alonso, who finished fourth in a Ferrari that did not have enough pace for the podium.

Romain Grosjean’s third place for Lotus confirmed the team as Vettel’s chief pursuers on another disappointing day for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes.

Starting from pole for the second successive week, he was surrounded by the Red Bulls at the start and squeezed straight down to third.

He then struggled for speed, showing that at least in mid-20 degree heat, as here under a blue sky in the Eifel forest, Mercedes have not found a way to stop their tyres going off.

Hamilton, who accomplished a great late move on former McLaren team-mate Jenson Button to finish fifth, is 58 points adrift of Vettel.

Still dejected by losing the chance to win the British Grand Prix because of a puncture and separating from girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, Hamilton said: ‘I’m not really thinking about the championship now.

'There’s really no point — especially as he is nearly 60 points ahead. We are going to need a little luck and a bit of elbow grease and we might be able to do it.’

Of his state of mind after appearing moody recently, he said: ‘I need to keep myself occupied and busy because otherwise my mind will wander and that makes the time a lot harder. I’ll get a day or two at the factory before the next race.’

The real victors here, if Vettel will excuse us, were tyre manufacturers Pirelli. They dealt quickly with the problems at Silverstone by bringing a new Kevlar-belted model here. There was not a blow-out all weekend.

Now for the next safety steps in a sport where danger can never entirely be eliminated.......

Red Bull Slapped with Big Fine

of Mark Webber during today’s German Grand Prix.

During Webber’s first stop, he was released before the right-rear tire had been properly attached which instead bounced along the pit lane, eventually striking FOM cameraman Paul Allen who is now under observation at a local hospital.

Webber was kept in the pits until the problem was resolved, losing a lap to the leaders but he managed to make a fight back through the field to eventually finish 7th, scoring six points.
The stewards’ statement reads:

“The team released car 2 [Webber] before all wheels were safely fitted and the right rear wheel came off as the car left the pit stop position. The wheel passed four teams and struck a camera operator causing injury.”

The fine follows the precedent set by the FIA for similar incidents, with Nico Rosberg’s tire also bouncing along the pit lane at the 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix, for which Mercedes were fined $50,000.

Additionally, Force India have been fined €5000 for the unsafe release of Paul di Resta during his first stop.
