Visconti battles snowy conditions to win his first stage on the Giro as Nibali maintains lead over Evans in race for pink jersey

Daily Mail UK, 19 May 2013

Giovanni Visconti claimed his first-ever stage win on the Giro d'Italia after digging deep to conquer the gruelling conditions that continue to blight this year's race.

The Movistar rider was part of an initial six-man breakaway group that pulled clear of the peloton with 82 kilometres remaining of the 145km stage out of Cesana Torines.
.

PREVIOUS REPORT (Yesterday, 18 May):

Good day for Nibali as leader widens gap at Giro d'Italia in woeful conditions at stage 14

Mauro Santambrogio took the stage victory but overall leader Vincenzo Nibali was the big winner as the poor weather dominated stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia.

Organisers were forced to remove the day's major climb as snow, rain and fog hit, but Santambrogio and Nibali emerged from the mist at the mountain-top finish after launching a late attack from the peloton to reel in the remnants of an early breakaway.
Nibali was content to follow the Vini Fantini-Selle Italia rider across the line, knowing that those closest to him in the GC standings were far behind down the road.

Cadel Evans, who began the day 41 seconds behind Nibali in second place, crossed the line 33 seconds later, while Team Sky's Rigoberto Uran also lost time as he finished 30 seconds back.
With the bonus seconds factored in, that leaves Evans second, one minute and 26 seconds down in the GC, while Uran dropped to two minutes and 46 seconds back in third.
The stage win saw Santambrogio put himself in the discussion too, as he moved from sixth in the GC to fourth, one second behind Uran.

There had been little surprise earlier in the day when organisers confirmed they had been forced to divert the course around the category two climb to Sestriere due to the continuing poor weather, extending the distance from 168 kilometres to 180km.

Good job: Mauro Santambrogio crossed the line at the 180km stage

Katusha's Luca Paolini, Bardiani's Sonny Colbrelli, Lampre's Daniele Petropelli and Omega Pharma-Quick Step's Matteo Trentin led the early breakaway and had forged a lead of almost 10 minutes, knowing they would need plenty of time in hand if they were to hang on during the final climb.

As the race moved inside the final 10km it still looked as if the stage winner would come from that group but the peloton was closing fast and several riders launched attacks to try and make up ground.
With the leaders in sight, Nibali made his move late with barely a kilometre left and Santambrogio went with the Astana man.

The pair came through the fog alone before Carlos Betancur finished third, eight seconds back, and then the long wait for Samuel Sanchez Euskaltel, Uran and Evans.

Robert Gesink and Michele Scarponi, the 2011 Giro winner, had begun the day fourth and fifth respectively in the GC standings, but their challenges suffered on the final climb as they finished well off the pace.

Scarponi held fifth but fell three minutes 53 seconds back while Gesink disappeared from the top 10 all together.

Attention now turns to today's stage 15, scheduled to be a 149km run to the famous Col du Galibier climb, with major changes expected to the route due to the poor weather.

Visconti doubles up to win his second Giro stage in four days as pink jersey holder Nibali preserves his overall lead over Evans

PUBLISHED: Daily Mail UK, 22 May 2013

Giovanni Visconti claimed his second Giro d'Italia stage win inside four days as the Movistar rider again produced a stunning solo ride to blow away his rivals.

The Italian was hugely impressive in winning Sunday's punishing 15th stage in the snow-hit Alps, and was again on searing form this afternoon as he timed his break to perfection on the 214-kilometre 17th stage from Caravaggio to Vicenza.

Visconti attacked 20km from the finish of the Crosara climb as he came home in a time of five hours 15 minutes and 34 seconds, 19 seconds clear of Garmin's Ramunas Navardauskas.

Astana's Vincenzo Nibali maintained the overall lead, the pink jersey holder coming home in the peloton to preserve his 1min 19secs lead over BMC Racing's Cadel Evans.

Movistar came into the day on a high after Benat Intxausti's win yesterday and Visconti's stage 15 triumph prior to Monday's rest day.

With Spanish sprinter Francesco Ventoso also a threat on the largely flat trek, Movistar had plenty of reason to anticipate a third straight stage win - and fourth overall following Alex Dowsett's victory on stage eight's time trial.

Visconti duly obliged, reeling in leaders Miguel Rubiano (Androni) and Danilo Di Luca (Vini Fantini) on the day's main climb before powering clear over the final kilometres.

'It's an incredible feeling,' said Visconti.
'This was definitely a stage which suited both me or Ventoso and we had targeted it in the morning.'

The action continues tomorrow with a 20.6km time trial between Mori and Polsa. The 96th edition of the Giro concludes on Sunday with the 21st stage into Brescia.

Nibali eases to time-trial glory and extends commanding overall Giro d'Italia lead

PUBLISHED: Daily Mail UK, 23 May 2013

Home favourite Vincenzo Nibali strengthened his grip on the Giro d’Italia race lead with a commanding victory in the stage 18 mountain time-trial in the Dolomites.

Nibali (Astana), who was third behind Sir Bradley Wiggins at last summer’s Tour de France, won the 20.6-kilometre race against the clock from Mori to Polsa by 58 seconds from Samuel Sanchez (Euskatel Euskadi) to enhance his hold on the pink jersey.

Nibali is in confident mood despite the unpredictable weather, saying:
"Today I've taken another major step towards winning the Giro. I hope the weather remains good.

Commanding: Nibali extended his overall Giro d'Italia lead to more than four minutes

Pursuit: Second-placed Australian Cadel Evans finished a disappointing 25th on Thursday

In the mix: Team Sky's Rigoberto Uran is third

'Whether or not we can ride the mountains stages as planned, changes little. I'm in good shape anyway. I've demonstrated that again today. So I'm relaxed.'

Nibali has also been encouraged by the crowds that have been turning out for the Giro recently.

'This Giro has been good to Italy, and good for the South of Italy, with (Giovanni) Visconti's stage wins. People are more and more passionate about cycling,' he said.
'Over the last three stages, the crowds have been very big. Even today, despite the rain, there were plenty of people at the roadside. Perhaps this Giro has relaunched Italian cycling. That's what we all wanted. I think we're on the right road.'

Second-placed Cadel Evans (BMC Racing) conceded two minutes 36 seconds after finishing 25th on the stage to fall back to more than four minutes behind with three days of racing remaining.

Rigoberto Uran (Team Sky) remains third, 4mins 12secs adrift, after finishing sixth on the stage, 1:26 behind Nibali.

The race appears to be Nibali’s to lose.
The 28-year-old Italian is seeking a second Grand Tour success following his victory in the 2010 Vuelta a Espana and has been in supreme form in his home race.

In teeming rain, Nibali soared up the ascent to Polsa to win in 44:29, with Sanchez almost a minute adrift. Damiano Caruso (Cannondale) was third, 1:20 behind.

Michele Scarponi (Lampre-Merida) was a second further behind in fourth and remains fourth overall, 5:14 behind Nibali ahead of Friday’s 139km route from Ponte di Legno to Val Martello/Martelltal, the 19th stage and penultimate route in the mountains.

The race finishes on Sunday in Brescia, with a sprint finish expected which would favour Briton Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), the winner of four stages in the race so far and points classification leader.
Cavendish is aiming for a points classification clean sweep after winning the titles at the Vuelta and Tour in recent years.

Snow Brings Giro d'Italia to a Halt -19th Stage is Cancelled
& Di Luca's Suspended for Positive Drugs Test

By Daily Mail UK, 24 May 2013

Friday's 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Ponte di Legno to Val Martello has been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, race organisers have announced.

Two of the major climbs on the stage had already been axed due to snow, and officials were forced to admit defeat in their fight to keep the rest of the stage open.
This year's race has been hit by bad weather, with torrential rain interrupting a number of previous stages, and organisers now have to re-organise the culmination of the race which is due to end on Sunday.

Snow joke: The peloton winds its way through to Ivrea

Italian Vincenzo Nibali extended his overall lead to four minutes and two seconds by winning the Stage 18 mountain time trial yesterday.
Australian Cadel Evans and Team Sky's Rigoberto Uran are fighting it out for second place.
Meanwhile, Vini Fantini-Selle Italia rider Danilo Di Luca has been provisionally suspended by the International Cycling Union (UCI) after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs for the second time in his career.
A surprise doping test carried out at the 37-year-old’s home on April 29 revealed erythropoietin (EPO) in his system.

Tough going: The course on stage 18 of the race was covered in snow

Di Luca was previously handed a two-year ban - later reduced to nine months - after testing positive for CERA during the 2009 edition of the Giro d’Italia.

Delay: There was no racing on Friday

A UCI statement read:

Quote:
“This morning the UCI advised Italian rider Danilo Di Luca that he is provisionally suspended.

'The decision to provisionally suspend this rider was made in response to a report from the WADA accredited laboratory in Koln indicating an Adverse Analytical Finding of EPO in a urine sample collected from him in an out of competition test on April 29, 2013.

'The provisional suspension of Mr. Danilo Di Luca remains in force until a hearing panel convened by the Italian Cycling Federation determines whether he has committed an anti-doping rule violation under Article 21 of the UCI Anti-Doping Rules.
'Mr. Danilo Di Luca has the right to request and attend the analysis of his ‘B’ sample.
'Under the World Anti-Doping Code and the UCI Anti-Doping Rules, the UCI is unable to provide any additional information at this time.'
Di Luca, who was 26th in the general classificiation at the weather-affected Giro before today’s suspension, was also disqualified for three months after winning the 2007 Giro for his association with banned doctor Carlo Santuccione.

The decision to sign the rider to Fantini-Selle on April 26 reportedly sparked much debate in the Italian team and today sporting director Luca Scinto told the Gazzetta dello Sport:

'Di Luca is an idiot, I never wanted him.'

Cav Completes Hat-Trick! Cavendish Claims Giro Red Jersey after Final Stage Win in Italy

By Daily Mail 27 May 2013

Mark Cavendish sprinted to victory in Brescia to take the red jersey in the Giro d'Italia and become only the fifth-ever rider to win the points classification in all three of cycling's Grand Tours.

The Manxman edged out Sacha Modolo and Elia Viviani to take the red jersey back from overall winner Vincenzo Nibali, who claimed it during his race-defining victory in the mountains on the penultimate stage.

Cavendish, who won the points classification in the 2010 Vuelta a Espana and 2011 Tour de France but finished second by a single point here last year, took both of the intermediate sprints on Sunday's final stage into Brescia, and the Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider then positioned himself perfectly for one final burst to the line at the finish.

Champion:

...

Glory: Mark Cavendish won the 21st and last stage of the Giro d'Italia on Sunday

History: Cavendish's became the fifth man to win the points classification in all three Grand Tours

Champion: Italian cyclist Vincenzo Nibali holds his trophy as he celebrates Giro d'Italia victory

Rigoberto Urán
: Team Sky's Rigoberto Uran came second

Nibali, who has been the clear class of the field in this year's race after the early exits of Sir Bradley Wiggins and defending champion Ryder Hesjedal, finished the race four minutes 43 seconds ahead of second-placed Rigoberto Uran of Team Sky.
Nibali's epic stage victory amid blizzard conditions yesterday had effectively sealed his place as this year's winner and he was applauded by the crowds all the way along today's flat 197-kilometre run from Riese Pio X to Brescia - an unfamiliar finishing point for an event which usually ends in Milan.

The Sicilian had put considerable time into both Uran and Cadel Evans on Saturday, with the Australian Evans slipping into third place behind Team Sky's Colombian, and there was no change in the overall standings on Sunday.

'I'm very happy,' Nibali said through an interpreter. 'It was such a great crowd and there was a lot of joy for me. It was very emotional, very moving, beautiful.
'The whole team was very strong, they've done a great job and today really is a beautiful day for me.'

It is the high point of Nibali's career to date.
The 28-year-old, known as 'The Shark', won the 2010 Vuelta a Espana but victory in his home Grand Tour will take priority on his resume. His previous best was a second-place finish in the 2011 edition after Alberto Contador was disqualified for doping.

Emotional: Nibali finished almost five minutes clear of nearest challenger Uran

Uran's second place was a considerable achievement for a rider that came here in a supporting role to Wiggins, but quickly took over leadership of Team Sky as last year's Tour de France winner battled illness and ill-fortune before withdrawing a week into the race.
Evans had been the closest to challenging Nibali for the overall crown, but his hopes ended in the mountains on Saturday as mechanical problems gave the kiss of death to his slim chances of closing the gap.
