Soccer WF-Mourinho-to-Chelsea Rumours

Mourinho-to-Chelsea Rumours Escalate After Madrid's Failed Ancelotti Approach

Bleachersreport 14 May 2013

You cannot help but feel some sympathy for Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez.

Just 48 hours before leading the Blues into the Europa League final against Benfica, further news involving Jose Mourinho will knock Benitez out of the headlines.

It is as if the Real Madrid coach himself is directing the news to frustrate and annoy his longtime adversary.

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed they have rejected an approach from Real Madrid to speak to coach Carlo Ancelotti (L'Equipe via ESPN), leaving nobody in any doubt that Mourinho will be leaving the Bernabeu this summer.

Mourinho hinted at a return to Stamford Bridge in a post-match interview following the Champions League semifinal defeat by Borussia Dortmund, while Benitez also indicated that Mourinho was on his way back to the Blues (The Guardian).

The Sun reported that Mourinho would start work again at Chelsea on July 1, the same day as David Moyes officially joins Manchester United as their new manager to replace Sir Alex Ferguson.

After a public fallout with Real Madrid captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas and defender Pepe, Mourinho's name was jeered by supporters ahead of the 6-2 win over Malaga last week (Daily Mail).

In his post-match interview after the second leg against Dortmund, Mourinho conceded he wanted to be somewhere where he was loved and singled out one club but did not specify their name (Daily Telegraph).

However, it does not take a degree in astrophysics to understand where the Portuguese coach is so adored.

With Real making a move for another former Chelsea boss in the shape of Ancelotti, there is now little doubt that Mourinho is on his way out of the Bernabeu.

PSG have also been linked with a move for Mourinho (The Times of London), but the momentum appears to be with a move to the team he left in 2007 after falling out with club owner Roman Abramovich (The Guardian).

For the past six years, Abramovich has attempted to replace the successful formula Mourinho brought to the club in 2004 with successive Premier League titles, but he has fallen short in his quest.

Ancelotti was one of those who could not satisfy the Chelsea owner's demands despite winning the league and FA Cup double in 2010, and he was sacked a a year later (CNN).

However, the former AC Milan boss has guided PSG to their first French championship for 19 years and to the Champions League quarterfinals, aided by the financial investment of club owners, the Qatari Investment Authority.

There is no doubt that Ancelotti fits the template of success demanded by Real, but there are also few who would argue that Mourinho and Chelsea are the perfect match.
However, in the clamour to welcome Mourinho back, Chelsea supporters should not forget that it is Benitez who has guided the team to another European final and Champions League football next season. For those reasons alone, the Spaniard deserves praise.
