United States of America PhOtOs-American Wins 2014 Boston Marathon .

The scene at the Boston Marathon becomes chaotic after two explosions.

Updated Apr 16, 2013 7:01 AM ET

BOSTON (AP)
Two bombs exploded in the crowded streets near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing three people and injuring more than 140 in a bloody scene of shattered glass and severed limbs that raised alarms that terrorists might have struck again in the U.S.

A White House official speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still unfolding said the attack was being treated as an act of terrorism.

Conflicting reports about a "person of interest" also surfaced. A "person of interest" was being questioned at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, according to the Boston Globe. Boston Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis also told the Globe that no suspects have been arrested. Davis said later in a press conference that “there is no suspect at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as has been widely reported.”

WBZ-TV reported late Monday that law enforcement officers were searching an apartment in the Boston suburb of Revere. Massachusetts State Police confirmed that a search warrant related to the investigation into the explosions was served Monday night in Revere but provided no further details.

Some investigators were seen leaving the Revere house early Tuesday carrying brown paper bags, plastic trash bags and a duffel bag.

Police said three people were killed. An 8-year-old boy was among the dead, according to a person who talked to a friend of the family and spoke on condition of anonymity.

“Any event with multiple explosive devices — as this appears to be — is clearly an act of terror, and will be approached as an act of terror,” a White House official said, according to the Boston Globe. “However, we don’t yet know who carried out this attack, and a thorough investigation will have to determine whether it was planned and carried out by a terrorist group, foreign or domestic.”

President Barack Obama vowed that those responsible will "feel the full weight of justice."

As many as two unexploded bombs were also found near the end of the 26.2-mile course as part of what appeared to be a well-coordinated attack, but they were safely disarmed, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because of the continuing investigation.

The fiery twin blasts took place about 10 seconds and about 100 yards apart, knocking spectators and at least one runner off their feet, shattering windows and sending dense plumes of smoke rising over the street and through the fluttering national flags lining the course. Blood stained the pavement, and huge shards were missing from window panes as high as three stories.

"They just started bringing people in with no limbs," said runner Tim Davey of Richmond, Va. He said he and his wife, Lisa, tried to keep their children's eyes shielded from the gruesome scene inside a medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners, but "they saw a lot."

"They just kept filling up with more and more casualties," Lisa Davey said. "Most everybody was conscious. They were very dazed."

As the FBI took charge of the investigation, authorities shed no light on a motive or who may have carried out the bombings, and police said they had no suspects in custody. Officials in Washington said there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

“It was just immediately [evident] there were injuries, right in the middle of the spectator crowds,” boston.com sports producer Steve Silva told the Boston Globe. Silva was there covering the race.

“There was blood everywhere; there were victims being carried out on stretchers. I saw someone lose their leg. People are crying. People are confused,” Silva told the newspaper.

The NBA canceled Tuesday's game between the Boston Celtics and the Indiana Pacers. It will not be rescheduled. The NHL also postponed the Boston Bruins' game against the Ottawa Senators on Monday night. It will be rescheduled.

Police said three people were killed. Hospitals reported at least 144 injured, at least 17 of them critically. The victims' injuries included broken bones, shrapnel wounds and ruptured eardrums.

At Massachusetts General Hospital, Alisdair Conn, chief of emergency services, said: "This is something I've never seen in my 25 years here ... this amount of carnage in the civilian population. This is what we expect from war."

Some 23,000 runners took part in the race, one of the world's oldest and most prestigious marathons.

One of Boston's biggest annual events, the race winds up near Copley Square, not far from the landmark Prudential Center and the Boston Public Library. It is held on Patriots Day, which commemorates the first battles of the American Revolution, at Concord and Lexington in 1775.

Boston Police Commissioner Davis asked people to stay indoors or go back to their hotel rooms and avoid crowds as bomb squads methodically checked parcels and bags left along the race route. He said investigators didn't know whether the bombs were hidden in mailboxes or trash cans.

He said authorities had received "no specific intelligence that anything was going to happen" at the race.

The Federal Aviation Administration barred low-flying aircraft within 3.5 miles of the site.

"We still don't know who did this or why," Obama said at the White House, adding, "Make no mistake: We will get to the bottom of this."
With scant official information to guide them, members of Congress said there was little or no doubt it was an act of terrorism.

"We just don't know whether it's foreign or domestic," said Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security.

A European security official said Tuesday initial evidence indicates that the attacks were not the work of suicide bombers.

"So far, investigators believe it was not the work of suicide bombers, but it is still too early to rule it out completely," said the official, who spoke from the United States on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the U.S. investigation.

The Pakistani Taliban, which has threatened attacks in the United States because of its support for the Pakistani government, on Tuesday denied any role in the marathon bombings.

A few miles away from the finish line and around the same time, a fire broke out at the John F. Kennedy Library. The police commissioner said that it may have been caused by an incendiary device and that it was not clear whether it was related to the bombings. FOX News reported late Monday that the fire was unrelated.

The first explosion occurred on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the finish line.

When the second bomb went off, the spectators' cheers turned to screams. As sirens blared, emergency workers and National Guardsmen who had been assigned to the race for crowd control began climbing over and tearing down temporary fences to get to the blast site.

The bombings occurred about four hours into the race and two hours after the men's winner crossed the line. By that point, more than 17,000 of the runners had finished the race but thousands more were still running.

The attack may have been timed for maximum carnage: The four-hour mark is typically a crowded time near the finish line because of the slow-but-steady recreational runners completing the race and because of all the relatives and friends clustered around to cheer them on.

The senior U.S. intelligence official said the two other explosive devices found nearby were being dismantled. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the findings publicly.
Runners in the medical tent for treatment of dehydration or other race-related ills were pushed out to make room for victims of the bombing.

A woman who was a few feet from the second bomb, Brighid Wall, 35, of Duxbury, said that when it exploded, runners and spectators froze, unsure of what to do. Her husband threw their children to the ground, lay on top of them and another man lay on top of them and said, "Don't get up, don't get up."

After a minute or so without another explosion, Wall said, she and her family headed to a Starbucks and out the back door through an alley. Around them, the windows of the bars and restaurants were blown out.

She said she saw six to eight people bleeding profusely, including one man who was kneeling, dazed, with blood trickling down his head. Another person was on the ground covered in blood and not moving.

"My ears are zinging. Their ears are zinging," Wall said. "It was so forceful. It knocked us to the ground."

Competitors and race volunteers were crying as they fled the chaos. Authorities went onto the course to carry away the injured, while race stragglers were rerouted away from the smoking site.

Roupen Bastajian, a state trooper from Smithfield, R.I., had just finished the race when he heard the blasts.

"I started running toward the blast. And there were people all over the floor," he said. "We started grabbing tourniquets and started tying legs. A lot of people amputated. ... At least 25 to 30 people have at least one leg missing, or an ankle missing, or two legs missing."

The race honored the victims of the Newtown, Conn., shooting with a special mile marker in Monday's race.

Boston Athletic Association president Joanne Flaminio previously said there was "special significance" to the fact that the race is 26.2 miles long and 26 people died at Sandy Hook Elementary school.

Update re: PhOtOs-American Wins 2014 Boston Marathon .

Did 'Boston Bomber' Say Too Much? Feds claim Tsarnaev has Undermined
his Plan to Plead NOT GUILTY as Prosecutors seek the Death Penalty

By Daily Mail UK, 1 March 2014

An FBI agent overheard Boston marathon suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev make a 'statement to his detriment' when his sister visited him in prison, federal prosecutors said Friday.
Prosecutors did not reveal what Tsarnaev said, but they objected to what they called an attempt by Tsarnaev's lawyers to suppress the statement.
Tsarnaev made the remark when an investigator working for his lawyers accompanied Tsarnaev's sister to a prison visit, a meeting that was monitored by an FBI agent, prosecutors said.

Loose tongue? Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (above) made a 'statement to his detriment' during a visit in prison with one of his sisters.
Dzhokhar and brother Tamerlan (bottom) who was killed in a shoot-out with police are accused of the horrific 2013 Boston Marathon bombing

Horror: Tsarnaev, 20, has pleaded not guilty in a terror attack at last year's marathon.
Two pressure cooker bombs were placed near the marathon finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 260

The defense investigator started to explain to Tsarnaev's sister the rationale behind special restrictions placed on Tsarnaev in prison, prosecutors said.
They say Tsarnaev, 'despite the presence of an FBI agent and an employee of the Federal Public Defender, was unable to temper his remarks and made a statement to his detriment which was overheard by the agent

The government described the conversation in a memo outlining their opposition to a request from Tsarnaev's lawyers to lift the prison restrictions, known as 'special administrative measures.'

Tsarnaev, 20, has pleaded not guilty in a terror attack at last year's marathon. Two pressure cooker bombs were placed near the marathon finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 260.

Confidantes: The terrorist suspect made his incriminating remark when talking to one of his sisters, either Bella or Ailina Tsarnaeva (bottom)

Punishment: Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty against Tsarnaev
for crimes that include using a weapon of mass destruction

Prosecutors argued that the FBI agent's presence was permitted by the special administrative measures, which prohibit providing information to people outside the prison.

Tsarnaev's lawyers have argued that the measures limit Tsarnaev's interactions with people helping his defense team.
Judge George O'Toole Jr. agreed to ease some of the restrictions earlier, but Tsarnaev's lawyers last week filed a new request to lift them.

They complained that the restrictions 'continue to interfere with preparation of the defense in important ways,' including 'obstacles related to FBI monitoring of family visits.'

Defense: Tsarnaev's lawyers want to develop as admissible evidence about 'family dysfunction, mental illness
and the impact of family chaos'. His parents are Anzor Tsarnaev (left) and his ex-wife Zubeidat Tsarnaeva

Tsarnaev's lawyers say the presence of the FBI agent during prison visits by Tsarnaev's two sisters 'has thwarted the defense ability to develop important mitigation information.'
They argue that courts have recognized the kind of information the defense wants to develop as admissible mitigation evidence, including evidence on 'family dysfunction, mental illness and the impact of family chaos on the defendant as he grew up.'
Prosecutors have argued that the restrictions are necessary in Tsarnaev's case because of his 'commitment to jihad' and his 'widespread notoriety.'
'There was no expectation of privacy on the part of Tsarnaev, his visitors or the investigator,' they argue. It is unknown which of the two sisters the statement was said to.

It was disclosed in the filings that Tsarnaev’s attorneys made a December request that their client be able to meet with each of his sisters.

Childhood: A shot of the Tsarnaev children while growing up

In the months since he has received two social visits. Such visits are restricted to one immediate family member.

Prosecutors have alleged that Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, built the bombs and placed them near the finish line of the April 15 marathon. Tamerlan Tsarnaev died following a shootout with police several days after the bombing.

Miriam Conrad, one of Tsarnaev's lawyers, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. A spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz declined to comment.

Thumbs Up re: PhOtOs-American Wins 2014 Boston Marathon .

Couple Who were Seriously Injured in Boston Marathon Bombing get Married in a Fairytale Wedding...
Just Days Before the First Anniversary of the Terror Attack which Nearly Killed Them Both

  • Pete DiMartino, 28, and Rebekah Gregory, 26, both suffered serious leg injuries as they watched the marathon with Rebekah's son Noah last year
  • But the tragedy brought them closer - and they got engaged in October
  • After winning a 'dream wedding' package from marriage website TheKnot, the couple were married in North Carolina on Friday
  • About 150 family and friends gathered for the ceremony at a 19th-century estate, with almost every detail decided upon by readers of the site
  • Rebekah walked down the aisle on crutches as she still recovering from her injuries
By Daily Mail UK, 5 April 2014

Nearly one year after they were both seriously injured in the Boston Marathon attack, Rebekah Gregory and Pete DiMartino were married on Friday, following many tough months of recovery.
The couple said 'I do' on a 19th-century estate in North Carolina, with the bride slowly walking down the aisle using a special crutch for her left leg, which may soon be amputated due to the severity of her wounds.
She was guided by her father, Tim, and son Noah, six, down a bed of pink-and yellow-hued rose petals to her awaiting groom

Sniffles were heard throughout the short ceremony, though the crowd laughed when the officiant asked Rebekah if she would take DiMartino as her husband: "Absolutely!" she replied.

but after becoming engaged after the incident, they are now officially husband and wife

The couple were at Boston’s iconic road race as spectators, waiting to see DiMartino’s mother cross the finish line, when two bombs blasted through the crowd on April 15.
Though they’d only known each other about a year, the attack made them realize how short life can be, Rebekah says, and DiMartino, 29, proposed in October.
'We really appreciate each other so much more. I’ve fallen deeper in love with Pete every single day,' Rebekah (now Mrs. DiMartino), 26, told NBC News.

The couple’s big day was in many ways organized by everyday Americans voting via wedding planning website, TheKnot.com, who awarded them the dream wedding free of charge.
The catch was that readers of the site selected Rebekah’s dress (Sophia Moncelli), the location (Biltmore Estate) and their rings.

On the morning of the Boston Marathon, Rebekah Gregory, her son Noah,
and boyfriend Peter Dimartino were waiting for Dimartino's mom to cross the finish line when the blasts happened

While DiMartino is from Rochester, New York, and Gregory is from Richmond, Texas, North Carolina was chosen as the location because it was the couple's favorite vacation spot.
The wedding photos were taken by Allan Zepeda.

During the Boston bombing, Rebekah's son was with the couple.

When the blast detonated - killing three people and wounding 275 others - Rebekah's body acted as a shield to her son.
Noah suffered injuries to his lungs and scrapes and bruises, but DiMartino and Gregory both required multiple surgeries and both continue to undergo rehabilitation.

Joy: Rebekah said she screamed 'yes!' before Pete could even ask her to marry him last October

Strong: The couple, who both suffered serious leg injuries in the April blast, are pictured
together before throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before a Red Sox game at Fenway Park in May

On the mend: Rebekah was only able to stand on her own two feet just before Christmas following the April attack

Rebekah underwent a staggering 14 surgeries following the blast and told The Knot that her leg still might need to be amputated.

As well as a ruptured eardrum, DiMartino lost 90 per cent of his right Achilles' tendon and suffered broken bones in his ankles and it has taken him months of physical therapy to learn to walk again.

But the couple has leaned on each other for support during their recoveries. One day in October, Rebekah told Pete she needed him. He jumped in his car, with a custom-made ring in his pocket.

'I was having a rough day and I called Pete and told him, "I just need you here right now",' she told The Knot. 'I was in complete shock when I saw Pete. He got down on one knee and before he could even ask, I said, "yes!"'

Happy: They had been dating for a year before their engagement and said the tragedy brought them closer

Hurt: The couple was standing at the marathon finishing line when the bombs detonated last April

She added: 'Being able to show people that you can take something so horrible and turn it into something so beautiful has been such a blessing to us.'

Just before Christmas, a device that had been drilled into Rebekah's bone was removed and replaced with a cast - allowing her to stand again for the first time since the tragedy.

‘To put two feet on the ground again was the most amazing feeling,’

‘And just right before Christmas, too. It’s like, what an amazing present this year.’

But Gregory still has a long way to go, and she has described the moment she put her foot down in the boot as extremely painful.

‘It was awful. It was the worst pain all over again,’ she said. ‘Putting it on the ground doesn’t feel right and it feels like it’s just crushing what bones I have left.’

Her doctors estimated that it would be another six months to a year before she is walking more freely.
She said she is so motivated by the achievement.

Blast: An image shows the first of two bombs that detonated at the Boston marathon finishing line last year

‘It just hit me: I’ve come such a long way and even though I have such a long way to go, I’m so blessed for this journey and to be able to help people and inspire people along the way,’ she said.

The couple met on a work trip.

'Going through an experience like the marathon makes you realize how short life really is and how we don't really know how much time we have left,' Gregory said.

'And I know that with my time there is nobody else I would want to spend it with. It made me realize how much I cared about him and how much he was the only person for me.' she said.

United States of America Re: PhOtOs-American Wins 2014 Boston Marathon .

Boston Marathon 2014: American Man Wins for First Time Since 1983

  • Washington Post, April 21 at 12:20 pm

On Monday, a little more than a year after the Boston Marathon bombing, the runners are returning to Beacon Street, Chestnut Hill Avenue and, finally, Boylston Street.

Their ranks have swollen to nearly 36,000, more than the 27,000 who normally participate, to accommodate many of the 5,600 runners who were halted by the bombing.

And for the first time in more than three decades, an American won the Marathon: Meb Keflezighi finished in 2:08:37, which is the second-fastest time ever posted by an American man at the Marathon. The last American man to win the Boston Marathon was Greg A. Meyer in 1983.

Rita Jeptoo of Kenya set a course record with a time of 2:28:57, winning the women’s field for the third time (she also won in 2006 and 2013).

Earlier on Monday, Ernst Van Dyk of South Africa won the men’s wheelchair race, finishing in 1:20:36 claim his 10th title. Tatyana McFadden of the United States won her second consecutive women’s wheelchair race, putting up a record pace en route to a final time of 1:35:06.

The blasts last year killed three people and injured more than 260, leading to a massive investigation and a manhunt that eventually shut down the city. This year, the 118th marathon is being run with tighter security, as 3,500 uniformed police officers are monitoring the area.

Already, during the week of tributes and commemorations leading up to Marathon Monday, a man brought a bag with a rice cooker to the race’s finish line on the anniversary of the bombing, just hours after a tribute attended by first responders and survivors.

Boston Police tripled the number of officers this year. It's evident in Cleveland Circle

Although some had wondered whether the fear of another attack would keep people away, the city is bustling. A million people are expected to line the route, double the number from last year. Many gathered in the days before the race, laying flowers at the storefront where the bombs went off and leaving tributes to those who were killed.

Crowds assembled at the finish line well before 7 a.m., reports Wesley Lowery in Boston.
Buses and trains were packed as throngs headed to Marathon parties as well as bars, restaurants and the finish line.

“I grew up here, but I hadn’t been back for years,” said Michael Herlihy, 59, who stood just past the 26-mile marker on Bolyston. “This year, I had to come.”
