Boxing Boxing:Guerrero's Arrested-Gun Possession at Airport

Robert Guerrero Reportedly Arrested at JFK Airport for Gun Possession

Bleachersreport, 28 March 2013

Boxer Robert Guerrero was arrested Thursday morning for gun possession at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, reports Joe Kemp of the New York Daily News.

Guerrero is facing four felony charges as a result of his arrest Thursday morning, according to Queens County District Attorney Richard A. Brown.

According to BoxingScene.com, Brown told reporters that bringing an unloaded weapon into the county is a Class E felony. The boxer brought a .40 caliber handgun and three 15-round magazines into New York, and told authorities at the airport where he was arrested that he had them. He now faces one count of criminal possession of a firearm and three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a combination of felony charges that could see him facing up to four years in prison.

In other words, the boxer could certainly find himself in hot water, as he could face a criminal trial and jail time as a result of his mistake.

Guerrero is scheduled to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4 in a welterweight title bout. He was en route to Las Vegas, the location of the fight, when he was found in possession of a firearm at the airport and placed under arrested, according to the report.

Sources told the Daily News that Port Authority police are holding the boxer at the airport and charges are pending. No further information about the situation or how the gun was discovered were provided in the report.

David P. Greisman of BoxingScene.com adds that Guerrero was in New York to promote his upcoming encounter with Mayweather before the incident occurred.

Guerrero holds a 31-1-1 career record with 18 knockouts and is a six-time champion. He's coming off an impressive unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto in November and is preparing for the biggest fight of his career against the undefeated Mayweather.

The 30-year-old American, nicknamed "The Ghost," has been on a roll in recent years, but is still waiting for his major breakthrough. A victory, or even a highly competitive bout, against Mayweather would provide it.

That's the least of his concerns right now, though.

Once charges are officially filed, it will become more clear what exactly Guerrero is facing and what, if any, implications it could have with the marquee fight just over a month away.

In the wake of Robert Guerrero's arrest, Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Guerrero, has released a statement via BoxingNews24.com explaining the details of incident at JFK Airport:

Six-Time and Four Division World
Champion Robert Guerrero
was checking in his luggage at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, bound for Las Vegas, and, as he was doing so, made sure to advise the authorities that they needed to be aware that he had a firearm, which was unloaded and in a locked safe box with his luggage to be checked. Guerrero was carrying no ammunition and was within his legal right to possess such firearm in the state in which he resides. He was then arrested. At an arraignment held before the New York State Supreme Court for Queens County, the court, after hearing the pertinent facts of the case, released Guerrero on his own recognizance. The next hearing in this matter is scheduled for after Robert’s May 4 fight against Eight-Time and Five-Division World Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
