Report: Woman shot dead at Pistorius house

Pretoria, South Africa (CNN) -- The 29-year-old girlfriend of South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius was found fatally shot in his upscale Pretoria home early Thursday, authorities said.

Police charged a 26-year-old man -- the same age as Pistorius -- with murder in connection with the shooting and said he will appear in a Pretoria magistrate court Thursday afternoon.

But they would not say whether the suspect was Pistorius. "We can confirm he was taken to a police station but can't confirm if he is the suspect," said police spokeswoman Denise Beukes. "You will find out in the afternoon."

Pistorius, nicknamed the "Blade Runner," made history when he became the first Paralympian to compete in the able-bodied Olympics last year.

The victim was model Reeva Steenkamp, according to Capacity Relations, the agency that represents her.

Beukes said the home did not appear to show signs of forced entry and that Pistorius and the victim were the only two people at the time of the shooting.

She also said there had "previous incidents" at the home.

"Allegations of a domestic nature," Beukes said.

Police said Pistorius was cooperating with them.

Several South African media outlets reported that the woman was mistaken for an intruder.

Beukes said she was aware of the reports, but that they did not come from the police force.

A spokeswoman for Pistorius declined to comment. His father, Henke, told the South African Broadcasting Corporation said Pistorius was "sad at the moment." "I don't know nothing. It will be extremely obnoxious and rude to speculate," the father said. "I don't know the facts."

Police were alerted to the shooting by neighbors and that residents "heard things earlier," Buekes said.

A pistol was recovered at the scene, police said.

South Africa has a high crime rate, and it's not unusual for homeowners to keep weapons to protect themselves from intruders.

"This is a very quiet area and this is a secure estate," Buekes said.

Pistorius, a double-amputee, ran with the aid of prosthetic limbs during the London Olympics last year, the first Paralympian to compete in the able-bodied Olympics.

The runner's legs were amputated below the knee when he was a toddler because of a bone defect. He runs on special carbon fiber blades, hence the nickname.

While he failed to win a medal in the Olympics, his presence on the track was lauded as an example of victory over adversity and a lesson in dedication to a goal.

Pistorius was initially refused permission to compete against able-bodied competitors, but he hired a legal team to prove that his artificial limbs didn't give him an unfair advantage.

He smashed a Paralympic record to win the men's 400m T44 in the final athletics event of the 2012 Games.

The athlete was named one of People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive last year.

Blood up the walls and a gun on the floor:
The grisly scene that met police on arrival at Pistorius' villa after he shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp

  • Photographs show the blood soaked bathroom in his villa in Pretoria
  • Gun used to kill Miss Steenkamp lies on a mat next to bloodied cricket bat
  • Blade Runner, 27, claims he used the bat to break down the toilet door
By Daily Mail UK, 31 March 2014

A blood splattered cricket bat, a pistol on the mat and a pool of blood at the bottom of the stairs - this is the horrific scene faced by police when they entered Oscar Pistorius's home.
The photographs show the blood-soaked bathroom in his villa in Pretoria where the runner shot his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on February 14, 2013.

The gun used to kill Miss Steenkamp lies on a small mat while a bloodied cricket bat lies nearby.

Scene of horror: This newly released photograph shows the blood-soaked bathroom where Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the toilet cubicle (top)
with his 9mm pistol (seen lying on a bathmat, right) and the blood-splattered cricket bat (bottom right) he used to break down the toilet door after killing her

The Olympic Blade Runner, 27, claims he used the bat to break down the toilet door after he shot his girlfriend by mistake.
Another image shows a pool of blood at the bottom of the staircase as well as specks on the walls.

Pistorius was expected to take to the stand last week to testify at his murder trial but court was immediately adjourned because one of the judge's two assessors was unwell in hospital.
The double-amputee Paralympic champion is facing 25 years to life in prison if convicted of premeditated murder for killing lover Reeva Steenkamp.

Macabre: Blood is splattered across bathroom floor, most likely caused when Pistorius carried his
girlfriend out of the toilet in a panic after, he claims, shooting her by accident believing she was an intruder

Defence lawyers for the runner, who is the only eyewitness in the case, were due to begin their case last week after four weeks of prosecution-led testimony.
But Judge Thokozile Masipa said that one of her two assessors, legal experts who are helping her with the case, was unwell and that the trial had to be delayed until April 7 as the court would not be properly constituted.
Prosecutors took 15 days to lay out their case against the 27-year-old, arguing he deliberately killed Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year by firing four rounds from a 9 mm pistol through a closed toilet door.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, through the closed door of a toilet
cubicle in his home in the night, later saying he mistook her for an intruder

Several neighbours testified to hearing a woman's terrified screams before a volley of shots, countering Pistorius' assertions that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder hiding in the toilet cubicle in the middle of the night.

The world-famous athlete pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and also not guilty to three other firearm-related counts.
The trial has gripped South Africa and millions of athletics fans around the world who saw Pistorius as a symbol of triumph over physical adversity.

SHOCKING TESTIMONY, VOMITING IN THE DOCK AND THE GRISLY TRAIL OF BLOOD THROUGH PISTORIUS'S HOUSE: A TIMELINE OF THE TRIAL SO FAR

March 3: The trial begins with testimony from neighbour Michell Burger who claims she heard 'blood-curdling screams' before gunshots were fired at the time Oscar Pistorius killed Reeva Steenkamp.
His lawyer Barry Roux says he intends to call a witness to testify that Pistorius screams sounded like a woman in a bid to discredit the claims.

March 4: Pistorius breaks down in court as Mr Roux argues that Miss Steenkamp was so badly brain damaged by the gunshot to her head she couldn't possibly have screamed for help.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...60_624x597.jpg

Physically sick: Oscar Pistorius vomits into a bucket as the pathologist who carried
out the post-mortem on Reeva Steenkamp gave a graphic account of her injuries

March 5: Mr Roux seeks to undermine the testimony of a couple who say they heard a woman's screams and gunfire on the night the athlete shot his girlfriend.
Barry Roux said similarities in the accounts given by husband and wife Michell Burger and Charl Johnson indicated they had aligned their versions at the expense of the truth.

March 6: Pistorius weeps in the dock as a neighbour describes the harrowing moment he tried to resuscitate his girlfriend after she was shot.
Radiologist Johan Stipp dashed to the Paralympian's home after hearing gunshots to find Pistorius kneeling next to Reeva Steenkamp and 'praying to God' that she would survive, the trial heard.

March 8: A former girlfriend who claims Pistorius dumped her for Miss Steenkamp testifies that he once shot at a traffic light because he was furious that a police officer had touched his gun.

March 10: Pistorius vomits in court when a pathologist describes how he shot Miss Steenkamp with so-called cop-killer Black Talon bullets which are designed to 'expand and mushroom' to inflict maximum damage.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...73_624x437.jpg

Aftermath of the killing: This picture of Oscar Pistorius, bare-chested and covered in blood
from the waist down, was taken by police shortly after the Paralympian shot Reeva Steenkamp at his home

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...03_624x400.jpg

Shocking: Blood can be seen down the athlete's left arm and on his shorts apparently from
when he carried his dead girlfriend down the stairs after shooting her in the bathroom

March 11: A friend tells the judge that the Paralympian has a 'big love' of weapons and recalls the time the athlete laughed after allegedly firing his gun out of the sunroof of a car.

March 12: A forensic analyst stages a dramatic courtroom reconstruction of the moment Pistorius broke down the toilet door with a cricket bat after shooting Miss Steenkamp.
Police colonel Johannes Vermeulen argued that Pistorius was on his stumps at the time, contradicting the Paralympian's assertion that he was wearing his prosthetic legs.

March 13: Horrific pictures following the trail of blood through Pistorius's house are shown at the trial - including one of his girlfriend's corpse that made the athlete throw up in the dock.
The image of Miss Steenkamp's blood-covered body was accidentally shown while the prosecution was showing other images including the c**ked 9mm pistol used to kill the model.

March 14: Dramatic pictures are shown to the court of a bare-chested Pistorius with blood all over his shorts and prosthetic legs shortly after killing his model girlfriend.

March 17: A gun licenser testifies that Pistorius was in the process of buying seven guns - three shotguns, two revolvers, semi-automatic assault rifle and another self-loading rifle - at the time he killed his girlfriend.
The order, which came to $5,000 (£3,000), was cancelled a month after the shooting.
Earlier, the court heard the double-amputee had a 'great love and enthusiasm' for guns and once went into full 'combat mode' after hearing a possible intruder at his home.
The noise turned out to be a washing machine.
Pistorius had also passed self-defence tests that stated you shouldn't fire unless you knew what you are shooting at and what lay behind the target, the trial heard.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...41_634x422.jpg

Key evidence: Forensic analyst Colonel Johannes Vermeulen stands in front of the toilet door
through which Oscar Pistorius shot Reeva Steenkamp while holding the cricket bat the athlete then used to break it down

March 19: The trial is told that Pistorius looked at porn and car websites the night before he killed Miss Steenkamp.
He breaks down in the dock as a ballistics expert tells Pretoria's High Court that Miss Steenkamp was struck in the hip by the first bullet, then fell back on to a magazine holder by the toilet.
She was then hit by another two bullets which struck her in the right arm and her skull as she crossed her arms over her head to protect herself.

March 20: It is revealed by the runner's lawyer that he has been forced to sell the luxury villa where he shot Miss Steenkamp to raise money to pay for his legal bills.

March 24: The court hears how the 29-year-old model admitted to being scared of the South African track star in text messages sent less than three weeks before her death.
One of them read: 'I'm scared of you sometimes and how you snap at me'. A later text said: 'I can’t be attacked by outsider for dating u and be attacked by you the person I deserve protection from.'

March 25: A selfie of Miss Steenkamp blowing a kiss which she sent to Pistorius weeks before he killed her is shown to the court.

March 28: Trial is adjourned until April 7 after one of the judge's two assessors is taken ill in hospital.

Oscar Pistorius Granted Bail Despite Judge Finding Him GUILTY of Culpable Homicide
-over the Shooting of his Lover Reeva Steenkamp

  • Paralympian faces up to 15 years in prison - but could also walk free
  • He was sensationally acquitted of two murder charges over shooting
  • But judge said runner was 'negligent' when he shot through toilet door
  • Prosecutors 'disappointed' by murder verdicts - and say they may appeal
  • Law experts question decision not to convict on a lesser murder charge
Daily Mail UK 12 September 2014

Shamed athlete Oscar Pistorius has been released on bail despite being found guilty of the manslaughter of his girlfriend.

Quote:

BLADE RUNNER'S CHARGE SHEET: WHAT REEVA’S KILLER WAS ACCUSED OF

Count 1: MURDER (pre-meditated and the lesser straight murder charges) or CULPABLE HOMICIDE of Reeva Steenkamp on February 14, 2013.

VERDICT: NOT GUILTY of murder but GUILTY of culpable homicide

POSSIBLE SENTENCE: Up to 15 years in prison

Count 2: DISCHARGING A FIREARM IN PUBLIC. Pistorius accused of firing a bullet into the floor of Tasha’s restaurant, Johannesburg, on January 11, 2013.

VERDICT: GUILTY

POSSIBLE SENTENCE: Up to five years in prison

Count 3: DISCHARGING A FIREARM IN PUBLIC. Pistorius accused of firing a gun through the sunroof of a car he was travelling in with his girlfriend, Samantha Taylor, and Darren Fresco, a friend.

VERDICT: NOT GUILTY

Count 4: ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF AMMUNITION. Pistorius had .38 calibre ammunition in his safe, and did not have a licence for a gun that takes this ammunition, or a permit for it.

Pistorius claims he was keeping it for his father, who declined to testify in support of him.

VERDICT: NOT GUILTY

The Paralympian was granted an extension to his bail until his sentencing on October 13 despite claims by the prosecution that he might flee the country.

Earlier, he stood impassively in the dock, his hands folded in front of him, as the judge convicted him of culpable homicide after he shot Reeva Steenkamp dead at his home.
He could now face a prison term of up to 15 years, but equally may walk free from court with a suspended term when he is sentenced at a later date.

Judge Masipa told the hushed courtroom: 'Having regard to the totality of this evidence in this matter, the unanimous decision of this court is the following: on count one, murder... the accused found not guilty and is discharged.
'Instead he is found guilty of culpable homicide.'
Miss Steenkamp's father Barry leaned forward in his seat when the manslaughter verdict was read, while her mother, June, showed no reaction.
Meanwhile, members of Pistorius's family embraced the shamed athlete.

Facing prison: The runner was also found guilty of firing a gun in a crowded restaurant, but acquitted of two other counts - of discharging a firearm through a car sunroof and illegally possessing ammunition

The runner was also found guilty of firing a gun in a crowded restaurant months before the shooting, but acquitted of two other counts - of discharging a firearm through a car sunroof and illegally possessing ammunition.
Yesterday, Pistorius broke down in tears as he was dramatically found not guilty of pre-meditated murder and a lesser murder charge.
Nathi Mncube, for the National Prosecuting Authority, said they were 'disappointed' Pistorius was convicted of only two charges.

He said prosecutors would decide whether to appeal after sentencing.

Speaking outside the court he said: 'We respect the judgment that has been delivered.
'We believed in this instance there was enough evidence to secure a conviction under pre-meditated murder.
'Of course we are disappointed. We are disappointed we did not secure a conviction under pre-meditated murder and also there was acquittal on the other two (gun) charges.
'The matter has not been concluded yet, we are still waiting for a sentence to be imposed.'

He said it was too early to decide whether prosecutors would launch any appeal.
After the verdict, Pistorius sat with his sister Aimee on the wooden bench where he has spent most of his six-month murder trial.
She put an arm around his shoulders and spoke to him.

For the first time in the trial, Pistorius left by going down the stairs that led to the cells in the courthouse because his bail expired after his conviction.
Pistorius's lawyer, Brian Webber, said he had been taken to a 'holding position.'
Defense lawyer Barry Roux told the judge that Pistorius should stay free on bail until sentencing because he had complied with bail conditions imposed on him after he killed Steenkamp.

Chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel, however, said Pistorius had more reason to flee because he had probably hoped for an acquittal during the trial.

'Now he knows for a fact that "I've been convicted of a serious offense and imprisonment is probable,"' Nel said.

The athlete, dubbed Blade Runner due to his prosthetic limbs, has always admitted he shot Miss Steenkamp, though he told police he simply mistook his girlfriend for an intruder.

But in clearing him of murder, judge Masipa had hinted the 27-year-old may be convicted of a lesser charge of culpable homicide after describing his actions as 'negligent' on the night she died.
Culpable homicide - the South African equivalent of manslaughter - carries up to 15 years in prison but has no minimum sentence and could see him given a suspended term.

She told the court in Pretoria, which included members of both the defendant's and the victim's families, that Pistorius acted 'hastily' with 'too much force' when he fired four bullets through his toilet door in the early hours of February 14 2013.

Pistorius was also described by the judge as a 'very poor witness' who 'lost his composure' during cross-examination.

Quote:

MANSLAUGHTER CONVICTION WILL TRIGGER A 'SECOND TRIAL'
Following Oscar Pistorius's conviction, prosecutors and his defense lawyers will have the chance to present witnesses in a separate sentencing hearing before Masipa decides if and how long Pistorius goes to prison.
In what amounts to a second trial, prosecutors could call members of Miss Steenkamp's family, maybe her mother and father, to testify for sentencing.
Defense lawyers might call psychiatrists to argue for a lighter sentence.
Culpable homicide carries a term of five years if a gun is used, but this can be increased or decreased depending on circumstances.
For example, the fact that Pistorius fired multiple times into a small space and didn't fire a warning shot first could count against him.
Yesterday, legal experts said the state could question the decision not to convict on the lesser murder charge that requires a different concept of intention - known as 'dolus eventualis' - which holds you responsible for the foreseeable consequences of your actions.

Judge Masipa said: 'Clearly he did not subjectively foresee this as a possibility that he would kill the person behind the door - let alone the deceased - as he thought she was in the bedroom.'

But Stephen Tuson, a law professor at Johannesburg's University of Witwatersrand, said the state would arguably be able to appeal on dolus eventualis (which is Latin for 'indirect intent').
'How can you shoot four bullets through a door and not foresee their death?', he told Bloomberg News.

Other South African leading legal experts also did not hold back on criticising the judge for leniency.

‘I’m shocked,’ criminal lawyer Martin Hood said. ‘I think she’s going to get quite a lot of criticism from the judiciary and the legal system.
‘This could really open the door to systematic abuse of our legal system by people who shoot their partners and claim self-defence.
'If someone can shoot in an irresponsible manner, and even in a negligent manner and not be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, then it means that we are not able to use the law as a tool to address violent crime in this country.’

The fatal shots: Four holes are seen on the toilet door from bullets fired by Pistorius, three of which hit Miss Steenkamp - in the arm, head and hip

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel – who had mauled Pistorius so viciously as he struggled in the witness box – was last night said to be waiting for Judge Masipa to hand down her final verdicts, before considering an appeal on her interpretation of the law.

Delivering her murder verdicts yesterday, judge Masipa criticised Pistorius's decision to reach for his 9mm pistol and fire it through the toilet cubicle in his home rather than raise the alarm or fire a warning shot.
She said: 'If the accused, for example, had awoken in the middle of the night and in darkness seen a silhouette by his bed and in a panic shot at that figure, only to find it was the deceased, his conduct would have been understandable and perhaps excusable.'

She added: 'The accused had reasonable time to think, reflect and conduct himself.
'I'm not persuaded that a reasonable person with the same disability would have fired the four shots.
'The accused knew there was a person behind the toilet door, he chose to use a firearm.
'I am of the view the accused acted too hastily and used too much force. It is clear his conduct is negligent.'

Glamorous couple: Oscar Pistorius with Reeva Steenkamp at the Feather Awards in Johannesburg, South Africa, in November 2012, three months before he killed her

Her verdicts came after a long wait for a conclusion in the case, the defendant having shot his girlfriend some 18 months earlier.

Interest in the trial was intense, and a ruling that parts of it could be broadcast live on television added to the scrutiny.
It opened on March 3 with a witness describing how she heard 'bloodcurdling screams' on the night of the shooting.
But the case was riddled with delays and adjournments, including a lengthy break in proceedings while Pistorius’ mental state was assessed.

The prosecution, led by Gerrie Nel - nicknamed The Bulldog for his courtroom tenacity - sought to depict the star as having a short fuse and being obsessed with guns.
His defence team, headed by Barry Roux, presented a case that portrayed him as anxious about crime and claimed evidence at the crime scene was mishandled.

Pistorius’s reactions as the case against him was set out ranged from crying during evidence about texts they exchanged to vomiting at a description of her injuries.

Quote:

'BLOOD-CURDLING' SCREAMS, TRAILS OF BLOOD AND VOMITING ON THE STAND: A TIMELINE OF ONE OF THE MOST DRAMATIC TRIALS IN HISTORY

March 3 - Oscar Pistorius pleads not guilty in court to murder and three gun charges.
Later, neighbour Michelle Burger, the first witness called by the prosecution, tells the court she heard 'blood-curdling' screams before the sound of four gunshots on the night the Olympian killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

March 5 - Prosecutor Gerrie Nel says neighbour Charl Johnson received texts and calls after his telephone number was read out in court the previous day.
He described one voicemail message as saying: 'Why are you lying in court? You know Oscar didn't kill Reeva. It's not cool.'

March 10 - Pistorius vomits repeatedly in the dock as he hears graphic details of the injuries sustained by the girlfriend he fatally shot.

March 11 - A witness describes how a 'furious' Pistorius fired a gun out of a car sunroof after being pulled over by police for speeding.

March 12 - Part of the crime scene is reconstructed in court as a forensic analyst demonstrates how Pistorius may have bashed a cricket bat on the door of his toilet to get to the girlfriend he had just fatally shot.

March 13 - Photographs of Pistorius's bloodstained prosthetics, the alleged murder weapon and of the crime scene are shown.

March 17 - The manager of a South African gun training academy says the athlete had 'a great love and enthusiasm' for firearms.

March 19 - A police ballistics expert claims Ms Steenkamp was standing in a toilet cubicle and facing the closed door when she was hit in the right hip by the first of four bullets fired by Pistorius.

March 24 - Text messages between Pistorius and Ms Steenkamp are read to the court.
In them she states she was sometimes scared of him and complained about what she described as his short temper and jealousy in the weeks before he killed her.

March 25 - The following day, defence lawyer Barry Roux notes that the messages were a tiny fraction of roughly 1,700 that police Captain Francois Moller, a mobile phone expert, extracted from the couples' devices.
Later that day, and in a rare comment, Pistorius says he is going through 'a tough time' as the prosecution case closes

March 28 - Judge Masipa delays proceedings until April 7 due to illness.

April 7 - The defence case opens. In a break from tradition, owing to illness, a pathologist is called as its first witness rather than the defendant.
When he takes to the stand later, an emotional Pistorius begins with an apology to Ms Steenkamp's family.
He says: 'There hasn't been a moment since this tragedy happened that I haven't thought about your family.'

April 8 - Pistorius breaks down in tears and howls while describing how he shot girlfriend Ms Steenkamp, forcing the court to adjourn.

April 9 - Giving evidence for a third day, Pistorius tells how his girlfriend 'died while I was holding her', describing how he put his fingers in her mouth to try to help her breathe and put his hand on her hip to try to stop bleeding from one of several gunshot wounds.

April 9 - Mr Nel begins cross-examination, showing a photograph of Ms Steenkamp's bloodied head. He tells the defendant: 'It's time that you look at it.'

April 11 - Pistorius's first week giving evidence ends with a dramatic exchange between Pistorius and Mr Nel about the moments before the shots were fired.

April 14 - There is another adjournment in court as the Olympian breaks down again while giving evidence.

April 15 - Re-examined by his own counsel, Pistorius recalls how he was 'terrified' that the person in the bathroom was an intruder.
'I feared for my life. I was just scared,' he says. 'I was thinking about what could happen to me, to Reeva. I was just extremely fearful.'

April 16 - Judge Masipa announces the trial will adjourn until May 5, following a request for a break from Mr Nel.

May 5 - Upon resumption, Pistorius's neighbour, Johan Stander, describes how he received an urgent call to help following the incident.
He says: 'He (Pistorius) said on the call, 'Johan, please, please, please come to my house. Please. I shot Reeva. I thought she was an intruder. Please come quick'.

May 8 - A social worker who visited Pistorius in the aftermath of the killing describes the murder suspect as 'heartbroken'.
Yvette van Schalkwyk, who says she decided to give evidence at the trial because she was upset by suggestions reported in the media that Pistorius was feigning grief to sway the judge in his favour, adds: 'He cried 80% of the time.
'He talked to me about what they planned for the future, his future with her.'

May 9 - A ballistics expert says his analysis of the scene where the Olympic athlete shot Ms Steenkamp differs from the reconstruction of the shooting by police investigators.

May 12 - Mr Nel says the athlete should be placed under psychiatric observation after an expert called by the defence said Pistorius has an anxiety disorder.

May 14 - The much-delayed trial receives another set back, as the judge orders the athlete to undergo psychiatric tests.
The case is delayed until until June 30 while he is observed as an outpatient at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital.

May 26 - Pistorius arrives at the hospital for the first day of psychiatric tests.

June 30 - After a month-long break, the murder trial resumes when mental health experts state Pistorius was not suffering from a mental illness when he killed girlfriend Ms Steenkamp.

July 2 - Mr Roux reads a psychologist's report which concludes Pistorius is severely traumatised and will become an increasing suicide risk unless he continues to get mental health care.

July 7 - Mr Nel challenges the credibility of a doctor who testifies that the athlete has an anxious nature linked to his disability.

July 8 - The defence team closes its case and the trial is adjourned.

August 7 - After a lengthy adjournment, closing arguments begin.

August 8 - Judge Masipa announces she will deliver her verdict on September 11.

August 9 - Pistorius is cleared of two murder charges, but faced an agonising 24-hour wait to see if was guilty of manslaughter.

Pistorius Jailed For Five Years

Press Association, 21 October 2014

Oscar Pistorius has been jailed for five years for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead on Valentine's Day last year.

The amputee athlete, known as the Blade Runner, stood staring straight ahead as Judge Thokozile Masipa announced his sentence for killing the model.

A member of Pistorius's legal team claimed after the hearing that he is expected to serve a sixth of the sentence - around 10 months - in jail before being held under house arrest.

Pistorius, 27, was also given three years suspended for five years for a firearms offence.

The judge handed down an immediate prison term for the charge of culpable homicide, saying she believed a non-custodial sentence would "send the wrong message to the community".

Judge Masipa has ruled in a trial that has captured public attention in South Africa and beyond

Pistorius killed Ms Steenkamp, 29, in the early hours of February 14 2013 when he shot her through the bathroom door at his home in Pretoria. He insisted he thought he was firing at an intruder.

The courtroom was packed for the culmination of a case that has attracted intense scrutiny around the world. Interest was heightened by a ruling allowing some parts to be screened live on television.
Police officers stood guard in the aisles, while Ms Steenkamp's family watched from the public gallery.

After a summary of the evidence in the case and related legal issues, the judge said:

"Having regard to the circumstances of the matter, I am of the view that a non-custodial sentence would send the wrong message to the community.
"On the other hand, a long sentence would also not be appropriate either as it would lack the element of mercy."
Asking Pistorius to stand, she said: "The following... is what I consider to be a sentence that is fair and just, both to society and to the accused."

Earlier, she described Ms Steenkamp as "vivacious and full of life". The court heard her parents June and Barry in particular were "not coping very well without their daughter".
Judge Masipa said: "The loss of life cannot be reversed. Nothing I say or do today can reverse what happened on February 14 2013 to the deceased and to her family.
"Hopefully, this judgment on sentence shall provide some sort of closure for the family and all concerned so that they can move on with their lives."

Earlier she said: "It would be a sad day for this country if an impression were to be created that there was one law for the poor and disadvantaged, and another for the rich and famous."
She said that during the course of the trial she had a feeling of unease as she listened to "one witness after another" place an "over-emphasis on the accused's vulnerability".
She said that while Pistorius is vulnerable, he has "excellent coping skills", and pointed out that he went on to compete against able-bodied athletes, but she said: "For some reason, that picture remains obscured in the background."
Judge Masipa criticised evidence given during the trial which questioned the ability of prisons in South Africa to cope with Pistorius's disability.
She said the expert's evidence "did not inspire any confidence in this court", and described it as "slapdash" and "disappointing".

The judge said that while the Department of Correctional Services was not perfect, it had made strides and was "moving with the times".
She said: "If the accused in this matter were to be given a custodial sentence, it would not be the first time that the Correctional Services Department was confronted with an inmate with disabilities."
She said she was satisfied that the department was equipped to deal with inmates with special needs and said it was "coping reasonably well".
She said Pistorius would not present the department with an "insurmountable challenge".
Judge Masipa gave the example of a pregnant woman belonging to one of the "most vulnerable groups of people", and said a pregnant woman would be sentenced to jail if such a sentence was warranted.

The judge said South Africa had "long moved on" from an era of "an eye for an eye" justice.
Pistorius had "helped change the general public's perceptions of disabled people", Judge Masipa told the court in Pretoria.
She added: "His impact on others was worldwide ... but it ought to be put into perspective."

The Olympic and Paralympic athlete, who had his lower legs amputated as a baby, fired his 9mm pistol four times through the closed toilet door at his luxury home.
Last month the judge dismissed claims that he intentionally killed Ms Steenkamp, saying Pistorius could not be convicted of either pre-meditated or second-degree murder.
But he was convicted of culpable homicide - the South African equivalent of the UK's manslaughter charge - as well as a gun charge relating to an incident in a restaurant in January last year.

Referring to the night of Ms Steenkamp's death, the judge said today that on his own account Pistorius thought there was an intruder in the toilet cubicle.
"Using a lethal weapon, a loaded firearm, the accused fired not one but four shots into the toilet door," she said.
She said mitigating factors included Pistorius's apparent remorse and his attempt to apologise to his victim's family.

As she left court, the victim's mother, June Steenkamp, was asked by reporters about suggestions that Pistorius would not serve the full five years in prison.
She said: "It doesn't matter, he's going to pay something."
Asked if she thought justice had been served, she said: "Yes."
The model's father, Barry, who suffered a stroke after her death, said: "We are satisfied."

The jailed athlete's uncle, Arnold Pistorius, said outside court: "This has been an incredibly hard, painful process for everyone involved.
"It has been a harrowing 20 months. We are all emotionally drained and exhausted.
"The case, set down for three weeks originally, has been dragged out for seven months. In fact, for 20 months since the bail application."
He hit out at the prosecution case.
"We said from the beginning that the state tried to force a puzzle into a position of pre-meditated murder," he said. "When they realised the fact that it didn't fit, they changed this case to a mosaic when everything can opportunistically fit everywhere.
"One of the most distressing parts for me of this whole trial was how the truth became totally irrelevant for the state's attempt to make pre-meditated murder fit."
He said the family accepted the sentence.
"Oscar will embrace this opportunity to pay back to society."

He added: "As a last word I want to say something as an uncle. I hope Oscar will start his own healing process as he walks down the path of restoration.
"As a family, we are ready to support and guide Oscar as he serves his sentence."

The judge told the court that Pistorius has no income and no property after selling it during the course of the trial.
Press Association Sport understands the six-time Paralympic champion will be ineligible for athletic competition until he has served his sentence.
It means Pistorius, who won his first Paralympic gold medal in Athens in 2004 aged 17, will not be free to compete in International Paralympic Committee events until 2019.
It ensures the 400 metres specialist, who won three Paralympic golds in Beijing in 2008 and another at London 2012, where he also competed in the Olympics, will miss the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016, but may, should he wish to do so, return for Tokyo 2020.

South African prosecutors say they are going to appeal against the conviction and sentence given to athlete Oscar Pistorius for killing his girlfriend.

Last week, Pistorius began serving a five-year prison sentence for the culpable homicide of Reeva Steenkamp, although he could be out in 10 months.

The double-amputee Olympic sprinter was cleared of murder.

Pistorius' family have said that he will not appeal.

Is This Oscar Pistorius Playing Football in Prison Yard with Notorious Czech Gangster?

  • Video appears to show the athlete having a kick-about in prison yard
  • Enjoys penalty shoot-out with notorious Czech 'gangster' Radovan Krejcir
  • Pictures appear to support claims sprinter has dramatically slimmed down
  • He struck up friendship with Krejcir after sharing gym on hospital wing
Daily Mail UK, 12 March 2015

A video has emerged that claims to show Oscar Pistorius playing football in a prison yard with a notorious underworld criminal.

The extraordinary footage appears to show a dramatically slimmer Pistorius enjoying a penalty shoot-out competition with Radovan Krejcir, who was last month charged with murder.

The disgraced sprinter, who was jailed for five years for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has struck up an unlikely friendship with the Czech fugitive since they became neighbours on the hospital wing at Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria.

In the 90 second clip, South Africa's two most notorious prisoners are seen taking turns to play striker and goalkeeper in the facility's concrete yard which they seemingly have to themselves.

The footage, shot from above on a mobile phone reportedly by a convicted robber, was published today by South Africa's Daily Sun newspaper.

The pictures appear to support recent reports that the double-amputee has slimmed down dramatically since his incarceration four months ago amid fears of poisoning by other prisoners.

According to jail sources, the shamed athlete is surviving on tins of baked beans, pilchards and an African vegetable dish called 'chakalaka' bought at the prison tuck shop after spurning his rations.

Wearing trainers, grey shorts and a white, unbranded T-shirt that appears to swamp his lean frame, the 28-year-old's thin arms protrude from its sleeves.
The images are in stark contrast to the muscle-bound track star who made history at the London Olympic games by competing against able-bodied athletes.
During the day, Pistorius is required to dress in the regulation orange jump suit which is issued to all inmates at the jail.

But according to a spokesman for the jail, he is entitled to dress in sports gear for his hour of daily exercise.
As a prisoner on remand, heavily-built Krejcir is entitled to wear his own clothes and is dressed in a striped top and deck shoes for his knockabout game with the famous athlete.

Although in the video Pistorius appears to move easily on his prostheses despite his obvious drop in weight, during his long murder trial, his doctor told the court of the pain the fallen sprinter suffers a result of wearing artificial limbs that fit poorly as a result of weight loss.

The bleak yard where the men are having a kickabout shows two narrow doors, one yellow and one red, apparently used to control the exit and entry of the prison's notoriously violent large population.

For the purposes of their football game, the doors provide make-shift goal posts and Pistorius shows himself to be useful in goal, deflecting the older man's attempt to score by blocking one shot with a prosthetic leg.
At one point, the one-time sporting idol has to delve behind some wheelie bins to retrieve the white ball after knocking away Krejcir's strike with his hand.

In apparent deference to his opponent, the Paralympic gold medalist is seen moving a concrete-weighted pole and plastic bag out of the way in order for Krejcir to have more room to take aim at the goal.

When it is his own turn to take penalties, Pistorius strikes hard, but hits one of the door 'goal posts', before sprinting off to reclaim the ball – clearly relishing the short burst of speed.

Prison chiefs are mindful of the threat to Pistorius's safety at the massive jail, where gangs dominate prison life and sexual and physical violence is the only means to progress up the gangs' chain of command.

He spends much of his day isolated from other prisoners, but Krejcir – despite his links with violent crime – is obviously perceived to pose no danger.

Last month, MailOnline exclusively revealed how Pistorius had been re-classified to a low-risk A category prisoner, entitling him to greater freedoms and privileges behind bars, including 'contact' visits, a radio and the freedom to wear jewelry.

The Daily Sun newspaper, which received the footage from a prisoner inside the jail, quoted an unnamed inmate who complained that Krejcir and Pistorius were getting preferential treatment because they are both white.

The paper reports that Pistorius is given mineral water, fresh fruit and tea for breakfast - treats that are not afforded to other prisoners and prepared only for him.

'We are all in prison and we must be treated the same. The colour of your skin should not be a passport to get on the sweet side of the law,' the prisoner told the paper.

The noise of the prison, which houses 7,000 inmates, can be heard on the video soundtrack, drowning any exchanges between the two men.

Krejcir, currently on trial for kidnapping, attempted murder and drug dealing, appears to enjoy the yard knockabout.

Model Reeva Steenkamp died after Pistorius fired four shots at her through a locked toilet door at his home on Valentine's Day two years ago

The Czech fugitive is facing a long incarceration as a prisoner on remand, with a number of outstanding cases against him.

Detectives said it would take years to wrap up investigations into the Czech's links with the criminal underworld including murder, drug trafficking, robbery and fraud.

Krejcir currently has three court cases running against him, but as an unconvicted prisoner is entitled to greater privileges than his neighbour on the hospital wing.

Krecjir's latest charge involves the murder of a Lebanese national who was shot more than 30 times when he stopped at a traffic light in Johannesburg 18 months ago.

News of the unlikely friendship between the two was revealed when Krejcir wrote a letter to prison authorities complaining that a treadmill and exercise bike – that he trained on alongside Pistorius –had been removed from the corridor outside his cell.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...6075583563.jpg

Krejcir used a false passport to move to South Africa seven years ago and has been linked to the unsolved murders of, among others, a luxury car exporter, the owner of a string of strip joints and a known drug dealer.
In 2013 he survived an attempt on his own life which involved remotely-operated guns which had been hidden - 007-style - behind the number plate of a parked car.

In December, the double-amputee's brother told South Africa's YOU magazine how the athlete had hoped to begin a basketball training programme for inmates, many of whom suffer from ill health due to HIV, Aids and TB.

According to Carl, Pistorius had requested a donation of basketballs from his family in order to set up the project after applying for permission from prison bosses.

In October, Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide over the death of 29 year-old Mrs Steenkamp at his home on St Valentine's Day 2013.
The double-amputee shot the model four times through a locked toilet door after mistaking her for an intruder.

He could be released from jail in August and allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

However, the state has appealed Pistorius' acquittal on a charge of murder. The athlete's own lawyers have challenged the ruling to allow the appeal.

The next hearing in the case is due to take place on Friday.

Prosecutors Appeal for Oscar Pistorius to Face a Murder Charge for Killing his Girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp
- Just Days Before His Release From Prison After Serving Less Than a Year For The Shooting

  • South African state legal team filed objection to culpable homicide verdict
  • Pistorius fired four fatal shots at Miss Steenkamp in February 2013 attack
  • Prosecutors argue he had intention to kill so should face murder charge
  • Paralympic gold medallist to be released Friday after just 10 months inside
Daily Mail UK, 17 August 2015

Prosecutors have appealed for Oscar Pistorius to be charged with murder just days before he is due to be released from prison less than a year after being convicted of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The South African state legal team on Monday filed their objection to the verdict of culpable homicide passed on the Paralympic gold medallist.

The 29-year-old killed Miss Steenkamp on Valentine's Day in February 2013 by firing four shots into the locked door of a toilet cubicle at his home in Pretoria claiming that he believed an intruder was hiding behind it.
Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated as a baby, is due to be released on Friday after serving 10 months of a five-year sentence, in line with South Africa's custodial guidelines for non-dangerous prisoners.

During sentencing, Judge Thokozile Masipa said the state had failed prove Pistorius' intent to kill when he fired.

Prosecutors want the verdict, equivalent to manslaughter, changed to murder because they argue that if Pistorius knew someone was behind the toilet door when he fired, he had the intention to kill, one of the prosecution team said.
'We filed the appeal today,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Luvuyo Mfaku said.

Pistorius' legal team has a month to file its response to the appeal, which the Supreme Court is expected to hear in November, Mfaku added.
In one of the wealthiest suburbs of South Africa's capital Pretoria stands a three-storey mansion where Pistorius will be taken on his release from prison this week.
He is expected to wear an electronic tracking tag when he is released on Friday to serve the rest of his term in 'custodial supervision', a form of house arrest.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/...9820779660.jpg

Arnold Pistorius and wife Lois. Oscar will go to his uncle's mansion in Pretoria when he is released on Friday

He will be mostly confined to the home of his uncle, Arnold, a high-walled manor in the leafy suburb of Waterkloof that features more than a dozen bedrooms, a private gym, outdoor swimming pool and landscaped gardens.

The athlete, nicknamed 'Blade Runner' because of the carbon-fibre prosthetics he used during his stellar career on the track, will likely be allowed to leave the house to work, carry out community service or to attend important family events.

In a country with one of the world's highest rates of violent crime and where many still live in poverty, there is limited sympathy for Pistorius.

'It's more like mansion arrest,' said Christopher, 31, a security guard who works on Arnold's road but lives in a basic two room flat in a rundown suburb of Johannesburg.

Steenkamp's parents did not respond to requests for comment. They said at the time of Pistorius' sentencing that spending 10 months in prison 'for taking a life is simply not enough' and it would send out the wrong message to society.

Experts who deal with former prisoners say the public is often unaware of how tough life can be.

'Many people don't understand the very serious impact prison can have on your life and the challenges afterwards, no matter where you live,' said Jacques Sibomana, spokesman for NICRO, an organisation helping to re-integrate offenders.
'The social stigma Oscar will face could be very psychologically traumatic. The punishment lives with you.'

Many legal experts agree with the appeal the prosecutors have placed.
'Given he fired four shots through a door when he knew someone was inside, I think there is a good chance the appeal will be successful,' William Booth, a lawyer who has followed the trial closely, told Reuters.

If convicted of murder, Pistorius will likely be given a custodial sentence of at least 15 years. The appeal hearing is due to start in November.

Pistorius was once considered one of the ultimate symbols of triumph over adversity, fighting authorities to become the first amputee to compete against able-bodied athletes at the Olympics.

Though he could return to training, Pistorius is unlikely to ever compete at the highest level again given his age and lack of intensive training since Steenkamp's death, experts say.

-Pistorius Release Blocked By Justice Minister

Early exit: Justice minister Michael Masutha yesterday blocked Pistorius' proposed release from Kgosi Mampuru II jail (pictured) because he said the decision was made it was made without legal basis

JOHANNESBURG, 24 Aug (Reuters) -

Oscar Pistorius shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp deliberately, her parents said, ahead of an appeal hearing in which prosecutors are seeking to overturn a South African court ruling that the athlete was not guilty of murder.
It was the first time Steenkamp's parents have spoken out against the court's verdict.

Pistorius, 28, was found guilty last September of culpable homicide, the equivalent of manslaughter, after Judge Thokozile Masipa said state prosecutors had failed to prove the Paralympic gold medallist had shown "intent" to kill.

The state argued throughout the six-month trial that Pistorius had deliberately killed Steenkamp when he fired four rounds through a locked toilet door where she was hiding after a row. Pistorius says he believed an intruder was inside the toilet cubicle.

Prosecutors filed an appeal last week asking for the verdict to be changed to murder. They argue Pistorius must have known when he fired that the person behind the door could be killed, even if he did not know it was Steenkamp. The appeal hearing is due to start in November.

"What actually came out in court is not the truth," Barry Steenkamp told Australia's Channel Seven television in an interview aired on Sunday.
"He got angry, she went off to the toilet, locked herself inside, and then him pulling out the gun and shooting."
June Steenkamp adds: "Why didn't he just let her walk away?"

Pistorius, nicknamed the "Blade Runner" because of the carbon-fibre prosthetics he used during his career on the track, was due to be released from prison last Friday after serving 10 months of his five-year sentence.

Justice Minister Michael Masutha blocked his release because he said the decision was made without legal basis, an intervention the Pistorius family said left them "shocked and disappointed".
The decision has been returned to the parole board for reconsideration, which could take up to four months.

Steenkamp's parents have said previously they were unhappy with the court's sentencing but this is the first time they have publicly questioned the verdict.

If convicted of murder, Pistorius will likely be given a custodial sentence of at least 15 years. (Reporting by Joe Brock; Editing by Janet Lawrence)

Pistorius is currently serving a five-year sentence for shooting dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. He had spent less than a year in jail when he was released and placed under house arrest.

For the remaining four years of his sentence, he can only leave home for specific reasons, such as to attend church or to carry out the community service tasks he has been ordered to do.

These tasks may include sweeping outside museums and cleaning hospitals.
Pistorius is residing at his uncle's mansion in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria.

Although he was acquitted of murder at trial last year - and instead, convicted of culpable homicide for the deadly shooting on Valentine's Day in 2013 - he is facing a second legal challenge.
Prosecutors argued at the Supreme Court on November 3 that he should be found guilty of murder.

At the appeal, Pistorius's lawyer was grilled by a panel of judges over the Olympic athlete's actions on the night he shot Steenkamp, a model and law graduate, through the locked door of his toilet.

Pistorius claimed in court he believed his girlfriend was an intruder. However, prosecutors argued that the judge at the sprinter's murder trial made errors when she acquitted him of murder.

The panel of five Supreme Court judges has the power to upgrade Pistorius's culpable homicide conviction to murder, which would mean the runner faces a 15-year jail sentence.

The Supreme Court, which can also order a retrial or rule that Pistorius' manslaughter conviction was correct, is expected to give its judgment at the end of this month.

Earlier this week, a picture of Pistorius emerged showing him posing for a 'selfie' with his rugby player friend Brett Sharman, apparently during a recent evening reunion at his uncle's home.

Sharman, 28, quickly deleted the picture - which also showed Pistorius looking gaunt and carried the hashtag #WeekendVibes! - from his Twitter account after it provoked criticism on social media.

He later denied the selfie was new - but declined to say when it had been taken.
'It was a stupid thing to do', he told South Africa's You magazine.

Sharman and Pistorius have been friends since they were at high school together.
Pistorius was best man at Sharman’s wedding to dancer Simone Krause in October 2014 - just a month before he was sentenced to five years in prison for Steenkamp's manslaughter.

Photos had previously emerged of the runner looking happy and relaxed at the wedding, which took place after he had been convicted of his girlfriend's killing.

Oscar Pistorius Guilty of Murdering Reeva Steenkamp

Daily Mail UK/BBC 4 December 2015

South Africa's prosecuting authority has today issued an arrest warrant for Oscar Pistorius.
They are pushing for the Olympic runner to appear in court as soon as possible so a date can be set for his sentencing, a day after the country's top appeal court returned a murder verdict.

The 29-year-old must appear at North Gauteng High Court 'as a matter of extreme urgency' and the court will determine any bail amount at that time, said Luvuyo Mfaku, spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

However, the ENCA television news channel said the NPA would not enforce the arrest until next week when the disgraced Paralympian, who is currently out of jail on house arrest, is expected to apply for bail.
The runner's family said its legal team will advise on legal options following the murder conviction against Pistorius, who shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

Speaking to MailOnline, Dr James Grant, South Africa’s leading criminal law academic who advised the prosecution on their appeal against Pistorius’ sentence, predicted that the state would argue for Pistorius to return to jail pending his sentencing in the New Year.

Pistorius spent one year of a five-year sentence in jail for the lesser offence of manslaughter and then was put under house arrest at his uncle's mansion (above) in Pretoria in October

‘The situation is very different now from his earlier bail applications when he was first an accused and then convicted of culpable homicide.

‘He has now been found guilty of murder, a far more serious crime so the considerations are now different.
'As in all cases concerning a conviction of murder, the state is likely to argue that Pistorius has much more of an incentive now to attempt to evade his sentencing hearing and poses a considerably greater flight risk now.

'The increase in severity of the conviction between culpable homicide and murder will accompany an increased risk of flight.'
'Of course, his team may argue that he is too easily identifiable to attempt to evade justice.’

The bail hearing could last more than a day and will be held back at the High Court in Pretoria, where Pistorius was on trial last year.
Judge Thokozile Masipa, who is due to sentence Pistorius, will not necessarily be required to hear his bail application as well.

'The NPA said yesterday they will look at the judgement... they have now obtained a warrant of arrest for Oscar Pistorius in light of the fact that he is now in limbo,' ENCA reported.

'The state will wait until Tuesday next week, where we understand (Pistorius's lawyers) will bring the bail application,' it added.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court of Appeal overturned a lower court's manslaughter conviction.

Pistorius spent one year of a five-year sentence in jail for the lesser offence and then was put under house arrest at his uncle's mansion in Pretoria in October.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp four times through the door of a toilet cubicle at his home early on Valentine's Day 2013.

Prosecutors said he killed her after an argument. Pistorius said he killed her by mistake, thinking there was an intruder in the house.

Justice Lorimer Eric Leach of the Supreme Court of Appeal said that regardless of who Pistorius said he thought was behind the door, he should have known someone could be killed if he fired.

Pistorius, 29, was initially convicted of manslaughter for shooting Steenkamp (pictured together) through a toilet door in his home early on Valentine's Day 2013. This has now been upgraded to murder

Under South African law, a person can be convicted of murder if he or she foresees the possibility of someone dying through their actions and go ahead anyway.

However, the athlete could be out of prison in just three years, a source close to the trial has said.

The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years but 'he can even get ten years and eventually only serve 30 per cent, so three years', said a source at Pretoria's High Court.

The source is said to be close to Judge Thokozile Masipa who found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide and reckless endangerment but not murder.

The Telegraph quoted the source as saying: 'I'm personally relieved, I think justice has now been done. Most people say that he deserved murder. Perhaps it's even a relief for him too - he's not living a lie any more.'

The family of law graduate and model Steenkamp said she could finally rest in peace.

The shamed sprinter was not at the Supreme Court of Appeal to hear the decision but is said to be 'devastated' at the verdict.

It was thought he would remain under house arrest until he was sentenced in the New Year but he now faces the prospect of spending Christmas Day behind bars.

'Blade Runner' Pistorius Gets Six More Years for Girlfriend's Murder

Reeva Steenkamp's family weep in court as Oscar Pistorius is sentenced to six years for murder - but say they will not appeal as 'nothing will bring her back'

  • Pistorius handed six year jail term for murdering Reeva Steenkamp
  • But he is likely to serve three years and could be out of prison by 2019
  • The conviction normally has a minimum standard sentence of 15 years
  • He hugged his family as he was led down following the lengthy hearing

6 July 2016 (Reuters) -

South African Paralympic gold medallist Oscar Pistorius was sent back to jail for six years on Wednesday for murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, less than half the 15 year minimum term sought by prosecutors.

It was unclear whether the state, which has two weeks to appeal, would accept Wednesday's sentence.

Pistorius' defence team said the athlete would be able to apply for parole after serving half to two-thirds of the sentence.

Following is a timeline of Pistorius' life and murder trial:

- Born on November 22, 1986 in Johannesburg.

- Born without fibulas, Pistorius has both legs amputated below the knees before turning one.

- After learning to walk on prosthetic legs, he becomes a keen sportsman in high school, turning to sprinting in 2003.

- Running on carbon fibre prosthetic blades that earn him the nickname "Blade Runner", Pistorius becomes a Paralympic gold medallist over 200m in Athens in 2004. He wins three gold medals at the Paralympics in Beijing in 2008.

- In what was hailed as a significant turning point for disabled athletes, Pistorius successfully wins the right to race against able-bodied runners at the London 2012 Olympics.

- Pistorius reaches the pinnacle of his fame in London 2012 when he becomes the first double amputee to run in the Olympics, reaching the 400m semi-finals, before taking two golds in the Paralympics.

- Pistorius is arrested and charged with murder on Valentine's Day, 2013 after firing four shots through a locked bathroom door at his luxury Pretoria home, killing Steenkamp, a law graduate and model, almost instantly.

- Judge Thokozile Masipa convicts Pistorius of culpable homicide in September 2014 after a sensational seven-month trial. She also convicts him of firing a pistol under the table of a packed restaurant but clears him of illegal possession of ammunition and firing a pistol out of the sun-roof of a car.

- Pistorius starts his five-year jail sentence on Oct 21, 2014.

- Pistorius is released to house arrest on Oct. 19 2015 to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest at his uncle Arnold's home in a wealthy suburb of the capital, Pretoria.

- Supreme Court of Appeal overturns Masipa's ruling in December and finds Pistorius guilty of murder based on the legal principle of 'dolus eventualis', arguing he should have foreseen the possibility of killing someone when he fired the shots.

- At sentencing hearings in June, Pistorius shuffles through court without his prosthetic legs to show the difficulty he faced dealing with the threat of an intruder.

- 5 June 2016 -Masipa sends Pistorius back to jail for six years for murdering Steenkamp, less than half the 15 year minimum term sought by prosecutors.

South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal will hear the state's appeal against Oscar Pistorius' six-year murder sentence, the National Prosecuting Authority has said.

The Paralympic gold medallist was sentenced to jail for six years in 2016 for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day in 2013.

Pistorius was initially found guilty of culpable homicide and given a five-year sentence, but was later found guilty of murder after a state appeal.

His case was transferred back to the original judge and he was sentenced to six years.

The appeal will be heard on 3 November 2017.

Oscar Pistorius Prison Sentence Doubled for Murder of Reeva Steenkamp, South African Appeals Court Rules

Paralympian has Jail Time Increased to 13 Years and Five Months over Valentine's Day Shooting

Independent UK, 30 Nov 2017.

Oscar Pistorius's prison sentence for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp has been more than doubled by a South African appeals court.

The 31-year-old's sentence has been increased to 13 years and five months by South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein.

The court upheld an appeal by prosecutors, who challenged the original six-year sentence for being too lenient over the shooting.

The Paralympic athlete, who won gold in the 100m relay at London 2012, has so far served a year of the original sentence.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013. He was arrested that same day and later convicted of manslaughter, which was later replaced with a murder conviction by the Supreme Court.

A spokesperson for Steenkamp's family said the ruling had "verified there is justice".

Prosecutors had told the court Pistorius' disability had been "overemphasised" by a judge and that the original 2016 sentence was far too lenient on the double-amputee.

“Murder is murder,” chief prosecutor Andrea Johnson told a five-judge panel. She asked them to overturn Pistorius’s initial sentence and give him the prescribed minimum of 15 years.

There is no death penalty in South Africa.

This is the second time prosecutors have gone to the Supreme Court to challenge a decision by Judge Thokozile Masipa, who presided over Pistorius’s trial.

In 2015, the state successfully appealed against Ms Masipa’s judgement that Pistorius was not guilty of murder. The court overturned her verdict of culpable homicide – or manslaughter – and convicted Pistorius of murder.

Pistorius has claimed he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder hiding in his bathroom during the morning of the shooting. Without his prosthetic legs on and standing on his stumps, he shot four times through the cubicle door.

Revealed: Oscar Pistorius' Czech Gangster Prison Buddy Planned Audacious £12m Break Out Involving His Own Mother, a Private Plane, a Gun Hidden in a Jail Treadmill, and a New Life in Argentina

Krejcir, 46, shared a gym with Pistorius at Kgosi Mampuru prison, Pretoria
Plan was to bribe female warden £25,000 and board helicopter to Swaziland
He would then travel to Mozambique by road and Argentina on a private jet
Escape foiled when gun, knife and plans of the jail were found in his room

Daily Mail UK 5 JAN 2019.

Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir's escape was foiled when a handgun, ammunition, prison guard's uniform and detailed plans of the jail were found during a raid on his cell.

Krejcir, 46, who once shared a private gym with Pistorius and was filmed playing football with him in their high security prison in South Africa, is on trial for a string of charges including two of murder.

Prison buddies: Jailed Paralympian Oscar Pistorius and Czech gangster Krejcir struck up an unlikely friendship at Kgosi Mampuru prison, where they were incarcerated as neighbours for six months, until Krejcir was moved to Zonderwater prison in April

Prison recreation: An extraordinary video, taken by an inmate on a mobile phone, showed Pistorius (white T-shirt) and Krejcir playing football in the concrete prison yard.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant Solomon Makgale, confirmed a 9mm handgun was found taped inside Krejcir's prison treadmill.

He could not say whether it was the same one he and Pistorius shared at Kgosi Mampuru prison, Pretoria, where they struck up an unlikely friendship before Krejcir was transferred 'for security reasons' in April.

A screwdriver was needed to dismantle the equipment, he told MailOnline, adding that Krejcir's latest bid for freedom was the fourth attempt to be foiled by the authorities.

Another police spokesman said government officials, prison guards, other inmates and allies from the criminal underworld had been co-opted to help spring the notorious racketeer.

Two female wardens and Krejcir's own mother were among a number of women involved the plot to free him, according to reports.

South African newspaper The Star reported that at least three members of jail staff - who guarded the mobster - were paid £25,000 each to assist his escape, which was thwarted following a tip-off to prison bosses.

It said Krejcir's escape plan involved overpowering the 'bought-off' female guard during a visit to a doctor's appointment

A high-powered Mercedes and a helicopter were on standby to whisk the fugitive over the border into Swaziland to recover at a luxury hotel.

From there, he would travel to Mozambique by road and board a private jet to Argentina to begin a new life as a free man.

Police estimated that all the bribes, the car, helicopter and jet added up to £12m.

The gangster's lawyer, Annelene van den Heever, denied her client had ever planned to escape but the haul taken from the gangster's room contradicts her claim.

A knife, taser gun, pepper spray, screwdriver, blades, ten mobile phones and SIM cards, a memory stick and plans of Zonderwater prison had all been gathered in preparation for the escape.

Along with the 9mm pistol and ammunition, a ledger listing the names of key state witnesses and investigators involved in the cases against Krejcir was also seized.

One of the adversaries Krejcir is charged with attempting to assassinate has already publicly vowed to hunt down and kill him, if one of his escape bids ever proves successful.

The gangster, who has been behind bars in South Africa for two years, has survived multiple attempts on his life, including a '007-style' assassination bid involving pipe guns concealed behind the number plate of a luxury vehicle.

He has yet to be sentenced for the crimes of which he has so far been convicted, relating to attempted murder, drugs trafficking and kidnapping. He still faces three further charges of murder and two of conspiracy to murder.

Krejcir and seven co-accused appeared in the high court in Johannesburg for the start of a murder and conspiracy trial.

The ebullient mobster informed a reporter for The Star that the raid on his cell was part of a wider plot against him.

'It is a plan of the conspiracy, I told you. I will comment further later,' he told the paper, adding that he was 'still surviving' despite his isolation in jail.

According to South Africa's Sunday Independent, Krejcir is now being held in isolation in an underground cell while his collaborators are hunted.

Pistorius and Krejcir first met on the hospital wing of Kgosi Mampuru, where they were incarcerated as neighbours for six months, before Krejcir was moved to Zonderwater prison.

Their friendship was first revealed when Krejcir wrote a letter to prison authorities complaining that a treadmill and exercise bike – that he shared with the double amputee – had been removed from the corridor outside his cell.

An extraordinary video of the pair playing football in the jail's concrete prison yard, taken by an inmate on a mobile phone, revealed an easy familiarity between the men.

Straight from a 007 plot: A VW Polo was fitted with remote-controlled guns under the number plate in a daring bid to kill Czech tycoon Radovan Krejcir in July 2013

Krejcir admitted during a recent court appearance that he missed the shamed sporting legend and joked to reporters 'we must play for Chelsea when we're released'.

Only last month, it emerged that a computer hard drive, linked to an investigation into Krejcir, had been confiscated from Pistorius' own cell following a dawn raid on his cell.

Other inmates at Kgosi Mampuru – which is overcrowded and dominated by gang violence – have complained about the special treatment enjoyed by the men on the hospital wing.

The newspaper, which first published the video of them taking turns to be goalkeeper and striker, quoted a prisoner who claimed they were getting preferential treatment because they are both white.

'We are all in prison and we must be treated the same. The colour of your skin should not be a passport to get on the sweet side of the law,' he told the paper.

Krejcir used a false passport to move to South Africa eight years ago and since then been linked to the unsolved murders of, among others, a luxury car exporter, the owner of a string of strip joints and a known drug dealer.

News of his foiled prison escape comes as Pistorius continues to languish behind bars despite becoming eligible for parole.

He was scheduled to walk out of the sprawling facility in the South African capital but his transfer into house arrest has twice been delayed amid accusations of political interference.

Pistorius was found guilty of manslaughter but cleared of murdering Reeva Steenkamp, then 29, after shooting her four times through a locked lavatory door on Valentine's Day 2013.

He claimed his gun fired off accidentally after he mistook her for a burglar.

Valentine's Day killer Oscar Pistorius is driving a tractor on his prison’s farm to help feed needy schoolkids as he hopes to win over a parole board.

The disgraced Paralympic sprinter, known as the Blade Runner, shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead at his home in Pretoria, South Africa, 10 years ago tomorrow and will soon make a bid to be released.

And as Reeva’s parents prepared to mark the anniversary of the 29-year-old’s death with a ceremony at the beach where they scattered her ashes, the Mirror was given exclusive details of Pistorius’s life in Atteridgeville prison – a low-security site that has been described as “comfy”.

One jail source said: “Pistorius remains muscular and fit.

“He has been seen driving a red tractor in fields around the prison, being trained to plough a straight furrow.

“The produce of the agriculture, including cauliflower, is then sold to help feed poverty-stricken schoolchildren.”

One official who saw Pistorius, 36, recently said he was a model inmate but added: “You can never tell if a prisoner is just putting on an act until he is released.

“Much depends on how much he’s been concealing his true feelings and whether he has worked through them.”

If released next month, Pistorius – who had both legs amputated under the knee as a baby – will have served eight years of a 15-year sentence for model Reeva’s murder.

The official said the system favours the offender, explaining: “The parole board doesn’t have much communication with victims’ families, while staff focus on building a relationship with the prisoner.”

If his bid fails, Pistorius – previously held at the Kgosi Mampuru II jail – will move to another site as Atteridgeville, near Pretoria, is becoming a women-only prison.

Meanwhile, Reeva’s parents, Barry and June, will join other family and close friends today to remember her.

They plan to mix some of her ashes with those of a close family friend who died late last year, then cast them into the sea and sing her favourite songs.

Oscar Pistorius DENIED Parole From Prison Decade After Murdering Girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp

How Oscar Pistorius Went From Olympic and Paralympic Icon to Worlds' Most Famous Murderer

Oscar Pistorius, who has served half of his 13-year sentence for murdering his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, once inspired millions but is now behind bars

Ms Steenkamp's family had opposed his bid and gave verbal and written statements at the hearing on the effect the murder had on them.

Ms Steenkamp’s mother June, who is from Blackburn, Lancashire, said before the hearing that she felt “very stressed” and “very nervous”, according to MailOnline. She said: “ don't believe his story,” and that it was “very hard to be in the same room” as her daughter's murderer.

Pistorius, behind bars for almost seven years, became eligible for parole after serving half of his 13-year prison sentence.

But the Department of Correctional Services said the reason provided was that he had not served a “minimum detention period’’.

The Steenkamp family’s lawyer, Tania Koen, said: “I can confirm that parole has been denied; they will reconvene in a year to reconsider him again and we don’t know the reasons yet [for the denial]...

“It is a huge sense of relief for June.”

Pistorius met Reeva Steenkamp's father last year when participating in a process known as victim-offender dialogue, part of South Africa's restorative justice programme that brings parties affected by a crime together in an attempt to achieve “closure”.

The independent parole board, meeting behind closed doors at the Atteridgeville prison near capital Pretoria looked at, among other issues, whether Pistorius is at risk of committing similar crimes in future, prison spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said.

Oscar Pistorius could soon be freed from jail after prosecutors were discovered to have made major errors in the handling of his parole bids.

The Olympian and double amputee has been in a South African prison since he was found guilty of murdering model girlfriend Reeve Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. Pistorius, now 36, claimed he thought she was intruder and the shooting was a tragic mistake.

He was convicted of manslaughter, and the verdict was later upgraded to murder, with a sentence of 13 years and five months. Pistorius has since made bids for parole, which have been rejected. His case will be heard again on Friday, where the South Africa’s department of corrections said a board will decide whether he is "suitable or not for social integration".

Serious offenders in South Africa must serve at least half their sentence before they are eligible for parole. The Supreme Court of Appeal eventually ruled in 2017 that Pistorius should serve South Africa's minimum sentence of 15 years for murder, but took into account the year and seven months he had already served for culpable homicide when it delivered his new sentence.

However, the court made an error by not counting another period Pistorius had served while his murder sentence was being appealed, meaning he was in fact eligible for parole in March when he was told at his first hearing that he would only be eligible in August 2024. Pistorius' lawyers took his case to the country's apex Constitutional Court, earning him the new hearing on Friday in recognition of the appeal court's error.

'Blade runner' Pistorius - who competed at London 2012 and rose to fame as the only double amputee to run at the Olympics - is not guaranteed to be granted early release. He was born with a congenital condition that led to his legs being amputated below the knee when he was a baby, but he took up track athletics and won multiple Paralympic titles on his running blades.

At his murder trial, he claimed he shot Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, by mistake with his licensed 9mm pistol because he believed she was a dangerous intruder hiding in his bathroom in the middle of the night. Pistorius will turn 37 on Wednesday and has not been seen for nearly a decade, although there have been occasional glimpses of his time in prison.

He sustained an injury in an altercation with another inmate over a prison telephone in 2017. A year earlier, he received treatment for injuries to his wrists, which his family denied were a result of him harming himself and said were instead caused by him falling in his cell.

South Africa’s former Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius, jailed in 2014 for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has been granted parole.

Oscar Pistorius has been granted parole and will be released from prison in January, almost 11 years after he murdered his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The South African former Paralympic star was serving a 13-year jail sentence for shooting girlfriend Ms Steenkamp multiple times through the bathroom door in their Pretoria home on Valentine's Day 2013.

Known as the "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fibre prosthetic legs, Pistorius went from a public hero as a Paralympic champion to a convicted killer in hearings that caught the world's attention a decade ago.

He was ultimately convicted of murder and sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison.

Pistorius, 37, has now been granted parole effectively from January 5, the Department of Correctional Services said on Friday.

Oscar Pistorius has been freed on parole more than a decade after he killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

In November, the former Olympian was granted a second chance at parole at a hearing in Johannesburg after being wrongly ruled ineligible for early release in March. The double amputee is now home after being released from a South African prison.

He was found guilty of the culpable homicide of his model girlfriend on Valentine's Day 2013. Pistorius, now 37, claimed he thought Ms Steenkamp was an intruder hiding in his bathroom when he shot her four times through the door with his licensed 9mm pistol. Prosecutors said he killed his girlfriend intentionally during a late-night argument.

The double-amputee has served eight-and-a-half years in prison and has now left the cell adapted for his needs at the low-security Atteridgeville Correctional Centre in Pretoria.

He will be housed at his uncle Arnold's £2million 12-bed, three-storey mansion in Pretoria’s exclusive Waterkloof suburb. The property and tourism tycoon has armed guards with attack dogs and has installed razor wire fences around the converted Dutch Reformed church.

Pistorius - nicknamed Blade Runner - will live in a five-star cottage on the grounds, which has panic alarms, a gatehouse and armed security. He is reported to have told friends he is looking forward to eating lasagne and watching favourite films Snatch and Full Metal Jacket
