WFootball: Dempsey Hunt Gets Hotter
Arsenal & Roma In Chase to Sign £7m Premier League Goal Machine: Serie A Giants Join Race for Fulham Striker Clint Dempsey
by The Newshound April 19th, 2012 Stadio Olimpico outfit the latest side to show an interest in the Craven Cottage attacker. Roma are ready to launch a bid for Fulham top scorer Clint Dempsey, according to reports in Italy. The American, who is out of contract in June 2013, has become Fulham’s most influential player over the last few years and has hit 16 goals this term, making him the Premier League’s highest-scoring midfielder. Craven Cottage boss Martin Jol is desperate for the Texan to stay in west London but, at 29, Dempsey knows that signing a new contract is almost certain to end his chances of playing for one of Europe’s major clubs. Arsenal have been linked with a summer move for him, but now Roma are ready to test Fulham’s resolve with a xlose season bid. Italian TV station Sky Calcio has reported that the Serie A giants would be willing to pay as much as £7m for the midfielder who could walk away from the club for nothing in just 14 months. Arsenal have been strongly linked with the in-form American, who’s adaptability is said to interest Arsene Wenger, and though Fulham will be loathed to lose Clint Dempsey the fact that sides across Europe are sitting up and taking notice will make it very tough to keep the 29 year old much longer. The former New England Revolution man has been a huge success ever since his move to Craven Cottage back in January 2007 but this season, his sixth at the West London club, has seen the forward hit new highs. Having netted 22 goals in all competitions it seems that a higher level of club is now taking an interest and that may prove too tempting for Dempsey to turn down. The chance to play at Champions League level is clearly something a player nearing 30 would be mad to turn down and Arsenal’s need to beef up their attacking options could lead to an offer this summer and if Luis Enrique’s Roma side can clinch a spot in the top three of Serie A then they too will have a decent chance of luring the Fulham man. Wenger has seen Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho fail to offer much in the way of goal-scoring support and Dempsey’s proven Premier League track record may make the United States international the perfect summer addition.
