With the amount of talent that the UFC possesses, there are a number of fighters who can legitimately claim to be in line for a title shot. Accordingly, number one contender fights are made so a clear top contender can arise.
Although we have several guys who are top contenders in each division, as their title shots are already planned, it will be interesting to see who will follow them.
The UFC employs over 300 professiona MMA fighters, but who is the clear choice to test their respective divisions' championships?

Let the debate begin............

Bantamweight: Renan Barao

I can honestly say that I was one of the biggest doubters of Renan Barao coming into UFC 143 on Saturday. I simply believed that he had too much hype behind him, considering his only notable win was over Brad Pickett.
That said, his dominating performance over Scott Jorgensen proved me wrong. Although not officially announced by the UFC, I believe that Renan Barao has earned himself the title as the "Number One Contender" in the bantamweight division.
Barao has very good striking that compliments a top-notch ground game. His choke holds remind one of an anaconda choking the life out of its prey.
His skills rival any of the top in the division—even those of Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.
Time will tell if he is in line for the winner of Cruz-Faber.

Featherweight: Dustin Poirier/Chan-Sung Jung Winner

The featherweight division is in a tough spot. There really is no number one contender, as the last clear top challenger in the division was Chad Mendes.
As seen, Mendes was disposed of quickly and easily.
Jose Aldo is the champ, and there are no clear number one contenders.
Based off this weekend, Dustin Poirier needs to earn a title shot with one more win. That title shot might need to be earned by facing Chan-Sung Jung, another man who has a top claim.
Jung, who knocked out former title challenger Mark Hominick in seven seconds, has impressed many in his last two outings. With a great chin, good striking and an underrated ground game, Jung could easily find himself fighting for a title shot in the near future.
Should Poirier and Jung fight for the number one contender tag, the fight would not only be important, but exciting as well.

Lightweight: Jim Miller/Nate Diaz Winner

In my opinion, there is already a number one contender fight in the making at UFC on FOX 3.
Jim Miller has won eight out of his last nine fights, with his only defeat coming to current top contender Ben Henderson, who will be fighting for the title later this month in Japan. Miller has proven to be a well-rounded fighter who tends to finish off his opponents.
Nate Diaz recently ended a big time winning streak possessed by Donald Cerrone with effective striking and constant pressure. He has shown to be "Nick Diaz 2.0" as of late, since he finally dropped back to lightweight (after he fought a few fights as a welterweight).
In addition to the Cerrone victory, Diaz's previous fight saw him decimate Takanori Gomi, finishing the Japanese legend with an armbar.
Both these men have proven worthy to be next in line, so why not give the winner of Miller-Diaz to the winner of Edgar-Henderson?

Welterweight: Jake Ellenberger

It is obvious that Georges St. Pierre and Carlos Condit will eventually fight to figure out who the undisputed champion is in the welterweight division.
As for a top contender in the division, one would have to think that it is Jake Ellenberger, provided he defeats Diego Sanchez this month at the inaugural UFC on FUEL.
Ellenberger has proven that he is not just a wrestler, as he has shown good stand-up skills in victories over Jake Shields and Sean Pierson.
Should Ellenberger defeat Diego Sanchez, it would be hard to argue against his status as "Number One Contender."
Some may argue in favor of Rory MacDonald, but he is still young in his UFC career and would benefit from another fight or two.

Middleweight: Mark Munoz/Michael Bisping Winner

Chael Sonnen is the man who will fight for the belt next, but not far in line behind him are the man he beat last month and the man he was supposed to fight last month.
Michael Bisping is coming off a loss, but it was close and competitive, meaning he did not wander far down the ladder. Bisping has finally proven to possess the skills needed to challenge a champion.
Mark Munoz on the other hand, is definitely a solid win away from earning a title shot. Had he not been injured, he would have fought Sonnen for the title contention.
This fight has not been made, but should it be, it would definitely decide who is next in line. Both men are skilled fighters who need to test their abilities against the best.

Light Heavyweight: Dan Henderson

Rashad Evans vs. Jon Jones is set for the next light heavyweight title tilt. In the meantime, it appears that Dan Henderson will sit and wait to fight the winner of that.
And he definitely deserves the next title fight.
Henderson has only one fight since returning to the UFC, but it was an entertaining, crucial victory over Mauricio Rua. Not only that, he was the last Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion, which may give him extra credentials to warrant a title fight.
Henderson has the chin, clinch game and knockout power necessary to dethrone a champion. Whether he fights Jones or Evans, it will be interesting to see the result of the fight.

Heavyweight: ?

The heavyweight division is easily the biggest question mark in terms of top contender fights.
Obviously, Alistair Overeem has the golden ticket to challenge Junior dos Santos for the title next. Beyond him are a number of fighters that will need to show they deserve to be the next man in line.

Frank Mir, Fabricio Werdum, Cheick Kongo, and Cain Velasquez are all hanging around the top of the division, with none of them being a clear number one.
In addition to that, many believe the winner of Daniel Cormier vs. Josh Barnett in the finale of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix should challenge the winner of dos Santos vs. Overeem.
Now while I disagree about the Cormier vs. Barnett winner, I really cannot think, when the smoke clears, of who will emerge as the number one contender.
Only time will tell, I suppose.
Feel free to comment on if you agree of disagree with my picks, as well as leave your idea on who should fight for the number one contender role in the heavyweight division.
