NFL Playoff Predictions: Projecting Every Matchup, from Wild Card to Super Bowl

Bleachersreport

Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images

Although there's a long way to go in the 2011 season, the playoff picture is certainly starting to take shape: we have a fairly good idea of who is going to be playing after New Year's and who is not.
The seeding (who will be hosting whom, when and where), however, is a completely different matter. Nothing is given. Nevertheless, it's always fun to try to guess.
So without further ado, here is a stab at which teams will qualify, where they'll fall in the playoff positioning, and how each week's games will play out.
And don't forget, that as important as playoff seeding or home field advantage can be, three of the previous six Super Bowl champions (Pittsburgh in 2005, the Giants in 2007 and Green Bay in 2010) won the Lombardi trophy without ever playing a single home game.

Default re: NFL -PHOTOS- Playoff Predictions:

Wild Card: Chicago Bears at New Orleans Saints

Stacy Revere/Getty Images

Right now, the Bears are on a roll and I think they'll ride that momentum into the postseason. Unfortunately, the Lions and Packers are going to end up with a slightly better record, forcing the Bears to just barely sneak in with a win on the last day over their division rival. Sound familiar?
That's what the Packers went through last year. And just like those 2010 Packers, I think the Bears' do-or-die attitude throughout the last two months of the season will serve them very well in the postseason.
A trip down to the Bayou will be a tough task and they'll be considerable underdogs, especially since these two teams met in Week 2 and the Saints crushed Chicago.
But as good as the Saints offense is, a team that is able to conjure up pressure on the passer with just the base-four down linemen will be a threat: that's how St. Louis beat New Orleans in Week 8.
And with Matt Forte's versatility, the Saints and blitz-happy Gregg Williams are vulnerable to screens and draws.
Prediction: Bears 27, Saints 20

Wild Card: New York Jets at Baltimore Ravens

Owning the tie-breaker over Pittsburgh is ultimately how the Ravens will earn the AFC North: both teams are going to finish with matching 11-5 or even 12-4 records. But neither team will earn a bye.
The Ravens opponent in that Wild Card showdown at home will be another team that has a young quarterback with a penchant for winning road playoff games: the Jets.
However, this will be the year that Rex Ryan's bunch is unable to overcome their offensive woes and survive in the postseason away from East Rutherford.
The Jets just have so many problems on offense (Mark Sanchez and the running game woes) right now that they won't be able to put up nearly enough points to match the Ravens, who have finally found the deep threat in Torrey Smith to complement Anquan Boldin.
Prediction: Ravens 20, Jets 9

Wild Card: Detroit Lions at New York Giants

Nick Laham/Getty Images

Losing two in a row has everyone in the national media seeing the Giants producing yet another late-season collapse. One look at their schedule suggests that it's even more likely.
Although I see the skid reaching three games this Sunday with the trip to the Superdome, they still have the benefit of two games with Dallas, their chief rival in terms of winning the NFC East and Eli Manning has enough of an edge over that subpar Dallas secondary to sweep the series.
The division championship will set up a great showdown with the Lions, who will land the fifth-seed over Chicago because the Packers will lay down in Week 17, opting to rest their starters.
And as great of a story as the Lions' return to the postseason will be, the Giants pass rush and the improvement in their secondary (Prince Amukamara) can really frustrate Matthew Stafford, especially since they have a very unreliable running game.
Prediction: Giants 31, Lions 14

Wild Card: Pittsburgh Steelers at Oakland Raiders

The Ravens taking the division title by way of the simplest of tie-breakers (head-to-head) will force Pittsburgh to go the long route if they hope to return to the Super Bowl, the same long route they took in 2005: all road playoff games.
And ironically enough, that journey will begin in similar fashion, with a trip to play Carson Palmer.
This time, they won't knock Palmer out via a questionably legal hit via Kim Von Oelhoffen, but the result will be the same: a decisive Pittsburgh road win.
The Raiders' return to the postseason (never before has a one-game lead in the division on Thanksgiving seemed so huge)is almost as good a story as the Lions'.
But they just don't have the muscle up front on defense to contain the Steelers running game or the speed in the secondary to keep up with Mike Wallace.
Prediction: Steelers 41, Raiders 17

Divisional: Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers

Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images

Last year, the Bears-Packers NFC Championship Game showdown marked the first time the hated rivals met in the playoffs. The next postseason showdown will come less than 365 days later.
The Bears' win in New Orleans a week earlier will provide a tremendous boost in confidence heading into the matchup with Green Bay: the Saints offense is comparable, though not as good as, the Packers'.
So Chicago will have a nice game plan for Aaron Rodgers and Co: By halftime, the game will be extremely tight.
Last year, Chicago's offense wouldn't have enough bullets to compete with Green Bay, but because the Packers secondary hasn't been as sharp and the pass rush isn't as ferocious, the Bears and a rested Jay Cutler will keep up for a while.
But in the end, the Packers, who fall short of the perfect season with back-to-back losses to playoff teams the Lions and Giants, will surge ahead in the second half as Rodgers' incredible 2011 season continues.
Prediction: Packers 45, Bears 31

Default Re: NFL -PHOTOS- Playoff Predictions:

Divisional: Pittsburgh Steelers at Houston Texans

Thomas B. Shea/Getty Images

On the heels of their impressive win in Oakland, the Steelers have to be pleased to see Houston.
For one, the shot at some defensive redemption from that loss in Week 4 is a bonus: allowing 180 yards rushing is just something a Pittsburgh defense doesn't do.
But more importantly, the Texans franchise has literally zero playoff experience and the players on the roster have little more to speak of. In terms of pure playoff experience, the Texans are the lesser of a few evils: the Patriots and Ravens just have so much more postseason readiness.
Meanwhile, on the other sideline, the Texans just seem like a textbook case of a first-seed who cruised to the top of the conference largely on the strength of an easier schedule and a poor division.
Down the stretch, the loss of Matt Schaub won't be nearly as much of an issue vs. teams like Carolina, Jacksonville, Tennessee and Indianapolis. Against Pittsburgh, however, that's a different issue.
The Steelers run defense will be much better equipped to contain Arian Foster and/or Ben Tate, and the Texans' ailing passing game won't be able to catch up.
Prediction: Steelers 27, Texans 14

Much like the Texans, I can't help but look at the 49ers and their great 2011 record as aided by a weak schedule and a weaker division. Yes, they've won games against good teams like the Eagles and Bengals, and they defeated the Giants in Candlestick two weeks ago.
But the playoffs are just such a different animal. And the veteran Giants have tons of postseason experience while the 49ers have almost none. While that's not nearly enough to produce a win, I think it's a start.
Despite the loss two weeks ago, the Giants definitely proved they can move the ball consistently against San Francisco: they had five drives of 70 yards or more.
And on the other side of the ball, when they really needed stops on defense (and weren't put in a terrible spot because of a turnover) they got them, forcing three three-and-outs in the second half.
In another close, tremendously thrilling defensive showdown (a la that epic 1990 NFC Championship Game) the Giants will escape Candlestick with a last-second field goal.
Prediction: Giants 17, 49ers 14

As impressive as the Ravens were in their first-round playoff game, the Jets aren't the Patriots: there's no comparison in terms of offensive output.
But even more of an issue is the fact that the Ravens have a knack for wildly inconsistent play, winning impressively one week (like the two wins over Pittsburgh) only to lay an absolute egg the next.
And that's how things will play out in Foxborough.
The Pats defense is certainly a weak link, but because they play so many offensively-challenged teams down the stretch (Miami, Denver, Washington, Indianapolis, the Fred Jackson-less Bills) they'll gain plenty of confidence and momentum going forward.
Even a decent effort by Bill Belichick's unit will be enough for Tom Brady to light up an aging Ravens defense that appears tired after 12 weeks without a break.
Prediction: Patriots 38, Ravens 17

AFC Championship: Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots

Jared Wickerham/Getty Images

It would be perfectly fitting for the Steelers and Patriots to square off in the AFC title game: After all, the two franchises have been the conference's Super Bowl representative seven of the past 10 years.
While there is certainly a huge difference between the Patriots hosting Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship Game at Foxborough and the Patriots heading to Heinz Field for a regular-season game, in the end, the results will be the same: a Steelers win.
The Steelers' greatest vulnerability right now is defending the deep ball with their limited corners: see Torrey Smith twice being wide open in the end zone during Baltimore's game-winning drive three weeks ago.
Tom Brady may have three awesome pass catchers in Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski, and Aaron Hernandez, but none of them are true home-run threats like Brady had in Randy Moss or Ben Roethlisberger has in Mike Wallace.
And although that Patriots defense will continue to improve from now until mid-January, Roethlisberger's ability to escape pressure, create things out of the pocket, and throw on the run will cripple New England and frustrate Bill Belichick.
One or two improvised throws downfield to Wallace will be enough to return Pittsburgh to a ninth Super Bowl.
Prediction: Steelers 26, Patriots 23 (OT)

NFC Championship: New York Giants at Green Bay Packers

The Packers have to be thrilled to see the Giants arrive at Lambeau: it's been four years since Tom Coughlin's club came to town and knocked the Pack out of the NFC Title Game in Brett Favre's last game. It's a shot at redemption....but then again it's another shot at a tremendous heartbreak.
This year, however, the Packers are just so dominant that it's going to be extremely hard for the Giants defense to slow them down consistently through four quarters. They'll do it in Week 14 in Met Life Stadium, but not on the Frozen Tundra.
As maligned as the Packers defense has been this year (only the Patriots is statistically worse) they still have the playmakers in the secondary and the linebacking corps to force turnovers from Eli Manning, opening the door for Green Bay to take control in a hurry.
50 years removed from the Packers' 37-0 drubbing of the Giants (Vince Lombardi's first championship in Green Bay), Mike McCarthy will earn a second consecutive Super Bowl berth on the strength of a ridiculously efficient offensive output.
Prediction: Packers 34, Giants 10

Super Bowl XLVI: Pittsburgh Steelers vs Green Bay Packers

The only other time in NFL history that there was a Super Bowl rematch--the Bills and Cowboys in 1992 and 1993--there was no redemption for the losing club: Dallas beat Buffalo both times.
This year, however, that mark will come to an end.
Pittsburgh's passing game has the ability to score points from any point on the field, and since the Packers secondary and pass rush isn't nearly as strong as it was a year ago, the Steelers can do a little bit better than the 25 points they put up last February in Texas....especially if they don't gift-wrap two turnovers again.
Still, the bigger challenge and the more compelling story line will be the Steelers defense against a Packers offense that with good reason will finish the 2011 regular and postseason as one of the most potent scoring attacks in NFL history.
Can the Steelers stop Aaron Rodgers from lighting up the stat sheet? Probably not. But because the Steelers will so thoroughly shut down their running game, even one turnover could be the difference in the game: last year, the Steelers forced zero against Green Bay.
In the greatest shoot-out in Super Bowl history (and a game reminiscent of their 2009 regular season battle) the Steelers come back to win in remarkable last-second fashion.
Prediction: Steelers 38, Packers 34
